My mom bought me a new laptop for christmas.

How the fuck is this allowed?

It's quad core, but that doesn't mean shit.

I'll leave an open question for you to think about (because I'm thinking about these issues in the last weeks):

free linux distributions have given a low entry point to run "virtual" machine/servers, and run software on them
the world doesn't have infinite resources
more servers running need more electrical power
more electrical power generates more CO2 emission

This is an actual problem I see, I don't know what the solution is, but the problem is there. "Infinite" free distribution of software looks like an ecological problem. I think we should start thinking about this issue now.

How does an Intersection Graph relate to a regular Graph and its Adjacency Matrix?

some green fags have indeed bitched about the electricity consumption of datacenters, but they're a small (low single digit) percentage of our overall energy usage.

and actually if anything virtual machines have drastically cut energy usage. Before virtualization was a thing you'd have dozens of servers in every machine room that spent most of their time being almost idle. Load all those low-intensity services into VMs and you can put them onto much more efficiently-utilized machines. Almost all of the energy spent on computing is actually going to a useful purpose, in other words, instead of being wasted keeping machines up and ticking over waiting for some work to do.

Say you wanna run Android x86 on one of these things, >pic related, and you wanna hook it up to a large touch sensitive display so that the whole thing works like a huge beefed up tablet without needing a keyboard, would that be possible?

I know how to get Android up and running on it but i'm not sure if and how its going to work with a non-phone / non-tablet touch display, like would it register touch inputs properly after just plugging it in or would it need special drivers / hours of config?

Yes, I have that page open. I need at least a basic walkthrough of HOW to plot it.
Doesn't have to be my particular question, but I need to understand WHAT I do with those sets to generate points.

I'm a sperg, and I can't figure out what the relationship between these sets and the matrix I'll be making is.
The textbook I'm using is shit, and my teacher is high on this fucking McGraw Hill bullshit.
I ALWAYS fuck up with McGraw Hill books...

Simply put, I need THIS information:
>Those sets are not points. How do I convert them into points?
I can see that some of them are the same, but I don't know what to do with them, because they only have 1 coordinate on their own.
>Once I have the points, what is the relationship that I can use to generate an Adjacency Matrix?
I know how to make the matrix AND how to read it, but I have no idea what the relationship is from this question

Wait, I just read it over a couple times. Can someone check if my interpretation is correct?

>The intersection graph of a collection of sets A1, A2, . . . , An is the graph that has a vertex for each of these sets and has an edge connecting the vertices representing two sets if these sets have a nonempty intersection.
Do this mean:
1) Each set is its own point, and it is only 1 per set?
2) When an edge connects 2 sets, that means they have common elements?
2a) An edge means ANY number of common elements and no weight?

This is really the best I got... can someone please confirm if this is right?

It's a function that takes a function and two lists as parameters and recursively builds a new list with the passed function applied to the heads of each list until one or both of the passed lists is empty.
>>
>>57720459
Did you see the image on the Wikipedia page?

Example: On the image, the green set is intersecting the blue set, the yellow set, and the red set, but not the gray set.

So in the intersection graph, you would draw the green node (i.e. the node corresponding to the green set) as being connected to the blue, yellow and red nodes, but not to the gray node.

And yes, each set is a point/node on the graph. If a node is connected to another node, it means the equivalent sets are intersecting (that is, the sets have one or more elements in common). That's it.

If you only use it at home, with power supply plugged in at all times, change the power settings from balanced (preserves battery) to high performance.

> winkey + type power options, hit enter
> click "Change plan settings"
> click "Change advanced power settings"
> in the dropdown menu, choose "High performance" rather than "Balanced" (which is usually active by default

My dad had a slow af cheap laptop and this actually fixed the shitty performance. It's still a shitty laptop obviously but it went from completely unusable to stable perfomance without significant lag as long as you don't overburden the system. But web browsing, office, movies etc run fine now.

Try it.

Ok.
Alright, that makes more sense. I can start the graph now.

I'm still unsure of one thing: Are those blobs a PART of the graph, or are they just there for visual aid? (Would the graph still be done without the blobs?)

Visual aid, the blobs represent the sets. You don't need them for the graph.

>Why do you insist on speccy?
Because it lists all the SMART data and most people have it if they're on Windows. It's easy to find the potential problems that way.

And yeah, it seems fine based on that. You can check more into it, though, if the dip holds for a while.

It's not making any high-pitched whines or clicking sounds, is it?
>>
>>57720811
Eh, okay. This is a pretty new drive (only got it a week ago) and I've been putting stuff on it, so I guess it'll look a little different regardless of if the computer fell on its side.
>>
>>57720830
Not yet, it's making all the same sounds it did before when I download stuff to it, run games on it, etc.
>>
>>57720855
It's probably fine then. If it starts making clicking noises, though, then you'll have to monitor it, because that can mean the write/read head is coming in contact with the platter (which means it'll eventually dig through it)

On the other hand, how far did it fall? I just reread what you said, and it looks like it just tipped over. That probably wouldn't be an issue, especially if the drives are located towards the bottom of the tower (since less torque when the top of the tower hits the desk)

Can I put a Samsung 850 EVO into my Thinkpad T530 and keep my HDD?

I'm not familiar with the model.
From what I looked up quickly, it doesn't seem to be able to fit 2, so I'm gonna say no (unless you don't mind one being connected externally)

What OS do you run, though? If it's a *NIX OS, you can probably just keep the OS on an SD card, since your system seems to have an SD card reader. Just go grab a 64/128/256 GB SD Card.

Then keep only data on the HDD

Ok, here is a question. It is more of a problem i have at work and I'm still trying to figure out a way to solve this shit.

So i guess I'll just post the TL:DR version.

I need to functional mouses working in the same machine while each one of them have it's own functional cursor.

I tried using TeamPlayer4 Free trial but only one mouse cursors is active at all times while the other one can only move itself, i also tried another software but that one straight up didn't work.

Now here is why i need 2 mouses working:

At work i have to fill a bunch of request forms, during the day i get around 20 to 40 forms to fill and it takes quite a while to do so. Since every form is filled in the exactly same way with the exactly same sentences i thought i could speed things up. I Tried using Selenium IDE on firefox to automate the filling of the forms but the systems has way too much shit on it for the software to fin the right places to fill in the forms. I tried to convert it into Python and java scripts and did some changes into the scripts but they still don't work.

So i just downloaded TinyTask, which just records my mouse movements and mouse/keyboard actions and repeats them over and over. It works like a charm but i can't use my mouse while the bot is on and I have other work do to.

Other solutions to this problem are welcome as well.

Unable to, but I'm 99% sure that's the problem as Device Manager didn't see one.

Actually, I'll just use the Windows one you pointed out. But still, NTFS right?
>>
>>57721541
Shouldn't be an issue, so long as the ODD is connected to the Mobo using the same interface.

If it's already connected with a SATA 2/3, then it will probably be seamless.
Only concern might be fitting the cable in ur laptop, and make sure the caddy has the same interface ur looking for.
I don't see why the caddy would otherwise be a problem, unless the SSD and Mobo are SATA 3, and you get a SATA 2 caddy

>>57721578
NTFS supports a lot of features that FAT systems don't, and EXT is not usable with Windows.
So, unless your partition absolutely does not need Access Control or Encryption (or I think, compression either), and it also does not need to exceed 32GB (FAT32 maxes at 32GB. exFAT can go higher, but that tool doesn't show that option), then go NTFS

youtube-dl

It's a command line tool. Versatile, works on loads of sites.
Install it from github.

If you're not used to command line tools, don't be intimidated. It's easy.
There are loads of options and a huge list of instructions, but you can safely ignore them.
All you really need to do is open a terminal/cmd window and type

youtube-dl

then a space, then paste in the url of the video you want to download.

Youtube-dl will do the rest.

Personally, I'm creating my own custom directory structure (pic related), but I doubt my other users will be as open minded. One in particular has a Desktop folder that won't even fit on the boot drive. So I need a way of having Windows not store the Desktop folder on my boot drive.

I am not 100% sure
but I think it goes like this

from your pc audio analog signal goes to the amp
there it gets amplified to be more stronger so that speakers are loud enough
then this signal gets in to your sub where lower part gets cut off from it, how much is controlled by the knob on the back called crossover

the lower frequency part is used to tell subwoofer how to move the speaker

while the rest is send to the speakers to do the rest, I assume unaffected not amplified

A Domain Name Server just converts and IP address into a domain name and vice-versa.

It will still be sent as the IP address of the site you are visiting. And, by this structure of an IP Packet, the source and dest addresses are in the outer IP header of the VPN packet.
So, unless you use proxies, they can still probably get info on whatever evil sites you're visiting that you don't want people to know about. And, even so, you might want more than 1 proxy. You could consider Tor.

Of course, I'm making the pure assumption that you're using this exclusively for privacy concerns and paranoia, and NOT because you're up to no good in the neighbourhood.

>So the sub does the processing and not the amp
processing?

small T amp like yours just increases the amplitude of the signal, making the signal stronger

>The sub just excludes a certain range from the speakers and that's why even a regular old 2.0 amp works?

I am not following on that sentance

subs have crossover which separates low frequencies from the signal so that speakers do not try to do them in vain when the big guy is there for them. All would be functional even if it did not do that, but its nice that it does it.

That's just the current backup drive, I haven't moved anything across yet. The fonts will be installed there of course.

SSD is a bitch ass 120GB that's over half full just on Windows and smaller programs, so I don't want to put many folders in there. I might be able to store some editing resources, but not the raw video clips (or only very temporarily).

Hey guys,

I've posted in a few speccy threads and haven't got an answer.

I built my desktop back in 2012 and haven't touched it since. Only just now is it starting to become noticeably weaker with newer games.

I'm really only interested with 1080p at this point in my life and along with a much better case (Enthoo Pro) and screen, I'm going to buy a GeForce GTX 1060 6GB - Boost clock 1873 MHz

Is this a good buy for my needs and should I upgrade anything else? I based these decisions mostly off of Logical Increments.

Here is the screen I'm looking at: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00UFCVKI4/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Thanks for any input guys.

Holy shit, are you me?

I'm using that exact monitor right now and plan on upgrading my system as well (bought a prebuilt CyberPower back in 2013, haven't touched since). I'm thinking about getting the EVGA SC 1060 6GB and the Enthoo Pro but with the acrylic side screen (found randomly while searching on PCPartPicker and I like the look better).

Btw, it's a decent monitor from what I can tell. Been using it the past 3 years and it's served me well. Might get a few smudges on the screen but that's about it.

The integrated HD Graphics (Broadwell) offers 12 Execution Units (EUs) clocked at 100 - 850 MHz. Similar to the CPU core, the GPU architecture (Intel Gen 8) has been thoroughly revised for improved performance-per-clock. We expect the HD Graphics (Broadwell) to beat the HD Graphics (Haswell) (10 EUs) as well as the HD Graphics 4200 (20 EUs), both part of the Haswell generation. Nevertheless, most games as of 2015 should be playable only in very low settings.

Broadwell is the first Intel chip to fully support DirectX 11.2 as well as OpenCL 1.3/2.0 and OpenGL 4.3. Video will output natively via DisplayPort 1.2 or HDMI 1.4a. However, the new HDMI 2.0 standard is not officially supported.

On the topic of WEB-DLs, I've recently been reading that it's more often better to download the 720p because the 1080p is "bit-starved", that is, the bit rate ratio is much lower than 2.25 times of that the 720p.

My question is, if I'm going to be watching it on a 1080p display, even if the ratio isn't correct, wouldn't the extra bit-rate no matter how little be beneficial? Wouldn't up-scaling the 720p to a 1080p display artificially cause it to be bit-starved anyway?

Why do some people put their task bar or panel across the top of the screen?

When you do that the buttons to control your windows also get clustered near the top of your screen, notably the tabs of your browser. That looks crappy and you have to slow down to click on the right thing.

And why do a lot of people use two panels in MATE or Xfce? There's plenty of space for all your elements in one panel. Using an extra panel just eats up your screen space. If you run out of room for window buttons move to another workspace.

NTFS.

When you are installing linux it will reformat the partition to whatever it finds best so dont worry about that.

On the other hand windows will complain if you use something other than NTFS.

FAT32 is fine for windows x32 bits but you shouldn't be using it this days.

FAT32 has a file size limitation of 4GB and doesn't like large files in general. Also it fragments faster than NTFS and doesn't have any advanced features like compression.

But as a storage drive it should be fine.

TL;DR: Debian testing/sid crashes on boot with KMS.

I switched my gpu to an RX480. As it happens, the driver (amdgpu) needs KMS enabled to work.

When loading with KMS the system crashes during boot (blank screen, caps key and power button non-responsive, no ssh).

I can still boot by adding [nomodeset] on the kernel params, but then it will only load the vesa driver. During boot, I get the message
[drm:amdgpu_init[amdgpu]] *ERROR* VGACON disables amdgpu kernel modesetting

when trying to switch modes, which seems to be 2-3 times during boot (different attempts?).

I tried forcing the amdgpu blobs into initramfs:
amdgpu >> /etc/initramfs-tools/modules; update-initramfs -k all -u

which causes the fans to spin up, but still crashes on boot.

modprobe amdgpu returns the same VGACON error.

I also tried with different previous kernels (4.6.0 and 4.7.0) with the same results.

Basically, I think the problem is related to KMS and not so much with the driver itself.

I'm using the latest testing kernel (4.8.0-1-amd), no DE, just boot to tty and xinit.

I've been researching this for a few weeks on and off, and I'm yet to find a solution.

I'll be up for a while if you have any suggestions.

the term you're looking for is "is the result deterministic?"
i'm not 100% sure, but i believe x265/x264 are deterministic by default, given exactly the same settings and running with the same set of CPU features
for normal usage (aka, not debugging or something), you don't need to be concerned about whether the output is deterministic or not

Also I just did a tester, ripping an old Bill bailey dvd, 90 minutes long, only 720 resolution. At highest quality settings with 2 pass .265 it was going to take 2 days, I think my laptop would melt. it's a 5 year old i7 I thought it would handle that but apparently handbrake doesn't support multicore processing which is odd.
>>
>>57730280
the slower x265 presets are excrutiatingly slow, even on current cpus
x264 has been around much longer, and is much more optimized
but x265 at faster presets (such as the default "medium", which is not that slow on modern cpus) often gives better compression than x264 at slower presets which may not even be faster to encode

if you're not sure what to pick, just pick the slowest one you can put up with, if 2 days for a dvd encode is unacceptable, use a faster preset (or switch back to x264)

Whenever I download a game from Steam it briefly freezes itself or my entire pc every few seconds
This happens ONLY with Steam downloads
Any download from anywhere else works fine
Running already-downloaded online games in Steam works fine

Standard google solutions don't work. I've run flushconfig, cleared the download cache, run as admin, unticked "read-only" on the Steam directory, force-unparked CPU cores, completely uninstalled and reinstalled to a different directory, disabled cloud saves and auto-updates, throttling download speed, etc.

I'm getting 100% CPU spikes during the freeze, I can't tell if that's the only direct cause of the freezing or if there are disk/network issues simultaneously
HDD shows no problems at all with SeaTools, and again, I can download literally anything else without trouble

Any idea as to what would be causing this and how to fix it?

Of course: at the moment, I cannot give a definite measurement of my desk's wall-to-chair size/length/width/whatever you would classify it as, so I'm asking for information that would be useful to me WHEN I take the measurement. The eye to monitor distance. As the desk measurement is not a known variable, I have to look for other variables to fill.

if /dev/sda4 is already mounted, yes
if the target directory is not empty AND nothing is mounted there (check with mount), rm -r it and recreate it

My monitor is a 1080p monitor, but since many games don't have very good antialiasing and i have a 980ti i put them at 2k and they look nice and smooth, problem is
every time i run a game at 2k it turns my monitor in 2k as well, i use windows 7 and i tried the disable display scaling on high dpi settings but it doesn't work, any ideas?

The phone I want isn't rooted yet.

How long does it typically take for a phone to get rooted? A month? A year?

What should I look for in a tv? Looking around online tells me that LG is the best, but all of their products seems to have a couple bad reviews, and they seem to be the most critical.

4k hdr ips low latency
Look for those 4 things mainly.

This seems to have everything you listed, I'm guessing it's a good one to shoot for?

Loks good, dont feel likw you have to gwt lg for whatever reason, Sony samsung and Panasonic are all good too.

Remember sound playa an important part in your tv too, so dont settle for the on board audio under any circumstances

I was using linux mint in a VM for a few months just for pirating stuff without slowing my internet down by using a VPN inside of it. Switched over to using it as my main OS recently. I used mullvad as a VPN service/client in the VM and it was working fine for months, but now that I've switched to using it as my main OS when I try and use it I get disconnected every minute or two. It reconnects immediately.

Any ideas?

Sony is more expensive for the same specs it seems, and I can't seem to find anything for panasonic. I have a sony hi-fi stereo that i'm sure will be better than whatever built in speakers any tv comes with, so that shouldn't be an issue. Thanks for the help!

Should I get Evga 1070 for $400, does Evga really over heat?

Nw, keep this in mind though

MEMC (motion estimation-motion compensation): Both Sony and Samsung 240Hz sets use MEMC to basically double the 120Hz process described above. However, instead of getting one extra frame for each "true" frame, you actually get three extra frames. (See reviews of the Sony KDL-52XBR7, the Sony KDL-XBR9 series and the Samsung LNB750 series).
Scanning backlight (240 effect): LG, Toshiba, and Vizio use what's called "scanning backlight" technology. Such TVs use MEMC once to get to 120Hz, but instead of doubling the interpolation, a backlight flashes on and off very quickly to achieve what Toshiba calls a "240Hz effect." LG, for its part, fails to make that distinction and uses the 240Hz term without qualification to describe its scanning-backlight models

I know vaccuming the computer itself isn't a good idea because of static, but what about vacuuming AROUND the computer? How careful should I be there?
