hey /mkg/, so I've gotten into mech keyboards this year and now my dad wants one for Christmas. He used to give me shit for spending so much on MKBs but I guess I won him over. here's what he wants:

>Budget
$120ish or under
>Location
US West Coast
>Preferred switch type
"The easiest to press"; I interpret this as MX Reds
>Layout
"I never use the numpad"; TKL or 60ish with arrowkeys
>Backlight
He wants RGB
>Previous/current keyboards
He's never even tried one but there's no goddamn way he'd put in the effort to try one first. We're several state away, but I have a Pok3r RGB w Browns and I just bought the XMIT Hall Effect TKL Bamboo.

they are keycaps though. The materials and the process required to make key caps are equivalent to making lego blocks, they shouldn't cost more than then actual keyboard itself.
But as long as consumers pay the listed price, there aren't reasons to sell them cheaper I guess.
>>
Whats the general consensus on Logitech g910 and their romer-g switches? I know its gaymur shit, but the keyboard is almost half price (80£) on amazon.
>>
>>57704881
legos are made in massive quantities and don't require the same kind of tools as making keycaps does.

A lego brick of a given shape requires a single injection mold, with no processing after it has been cast. In terms of keycaps, a blank keycap would be equivalent to this.
>>

Can you type faster, more accurately or produce better quality code/text with the key caps?
If the answer is no, you do not need to buy keycaps.

Linus Torvalds maintains the Linux kernel with a standard Corsair mechanical keyboard. He doesn't use a custom lubed up O-ringed HHKB with Miami Keys, dildo shaped artisan escape key, braided cable and RGB LEDS

>>57705800
They do. The tactile feedback is done by the rubberdome.
>>
>>57705855
So whats it like, a little bump like an mx brown?
>>
>>57705800
Realforce feels linear to me. No idea why opinions like >>57705855 are parroted as much as they are.

It's very smooth till it makes that thonk from bottoming out. It's rubber so bottoming out is like on rubber membrane keyboards. The closest switch I could compare it too are Cherry reds.
>>
>>57705987
But red is linear, these have some feedback dont they

or is it just unnoticeable?
maybe if I got thicker keycaps?
>>
>>57705895
Its hard to explain. But in a normal membrane keyboard when the rubber dome collapses you feel a sudden change in force just before you bottom out. In topres on the other hand you do feel a change in force, but its completely smooth all the way down. The mushiness of rubber domes is gone, but if you have a lighter switch you may not feel the shift and instead compare it more to a cherry red.
>>
>>57705987

>opinions

It's not an """opinion""" that the rubber buckles when it's pressed down
>>
>>57706019
>But red is linear
Yes that's why I said it's the closest feeling to Topre.

Honestly the best advice I can give you is ignore anyone saying Topre switches feel like rubber domes in anyway other than how they bottom out.
>>
>>57705987
Are you using 35g topre clones? I know that 55g Topre is hard to come by, but their is most definitely some tactile feedback.
>>
>>57706082
shit
I got a good deal on a Topre but its 45g

If I put PBT keycaps would it help with the tactility?
>>
Should I get v60 or pok3r with no back lighting?
>>
>>57706110
I don't think so. You see the actuation point cannot be felt because of the nature of rubberdomes. There is also almost no resistance once the dome collapses making it really hard to not bottom out
>>
>>57705090
I type faster and more comfortably with flat profile keys than standard profile, does that count?
>>
>>57706086
Realforce 45g
>>57706110
The ABS vs PBT is preference. As long as they're high quality both are good.
>>
>>57706164
>You see the actuation point cannot be felt because of the nature of rubberdomes.
You can because rubber domes need to be bottomed out.

Topre not using rubber domes do not.
>>
>>57706159
pok3r has limited programmability, PBT keycaps, and a metal case, albeit its spray painted so it can ship off. v60 is not programmable, has ABS keycaps, and is made from plastic

threadly reminder the best keyboard ever made uses rubber dome technology.
>>
>>57706214
hold on let me rephrase that. In topres you can feel the tactile feedback at the top when the dome colapses. However the actual actuation of the switch happens due to a 5g spring at the bottom. Since this spring is capacitive you can have varying distances of when the actuation point happens. This means that if you set it low enough you can't feel the actuation point since the dome has already collapsed.
>>
>>57706219
the v60 costs like $40 less senpai
>>
>>57706303
I don't feel this tactile feedback people are talking about. If it's there it's very small to the point of not being able to tell.

If you like Razer greens then why not get the switch that they are based off. You do know that razer greens are just re branded Kailh blue, which are just Chinese knock offs of Cherry Blues.

If you want a Rosewill rk9000v2 keyboard with cherry MX blues is still on sale for 60 bucks at amazon

Funny thing is that when the model F first came out it cost $1000 in today's money. The new model Fs use better materials then the originals, and cost less then half as much at around $350-400.

The surrounding plastic is not as solid as the old model Ms, however they kept the metal backplate, and kept the key thickness and buckling springs exactly the same as the old model M's. Typing experience is exactly the same. This one was made a month ago (sorry the date sticker is not in the picture).

One other thing I disagree about that review, is when he compares the sound pitch of the 1985 model M. He is comparing a brand new one vs one that is used. The buckling springs will not be in the same condition and so pitch will probably differ.

You can sort of feel the dome cave in near the top of the stroke and then you just drop straight down to the bottom. The bottom-out is pretty harsh even with the rubber because there's zero resistance after the dome caves, and is why the thock is so audible.

>>57705987

I was initially interested in Topres, admittedly in no small part because of how hard they're memed and thinking that price=quality, but I actually hated them after trying a Realforce board in a store. The collapsing dome and bottom-out is everything I despise about shitty dome boards and I guess I thought Topres were somehow different but they're not.

They're definitely way smoother and nicer than a typical rubberdome, but they're not for me.

Shouldn't be expensive for tiny PCBs, especially since it'd be ordered in bulk. It doesn't need to be 2mm thick, or have 3oz copper. in the geekhack thread someone suggested flex PCBs, which would be $30 per keyboard (assuming a 1000 pcb order).

What make the HHKB such an iconic board?
I'm in the market for a topre board and I am not totally decided between a TKL realforce and a HHKB.
The interest I had on the HHKB was the location of the ctrl key but I guess I'd feel cripple in the long run
>have to choose between backspace and delete
>no function keys
>no arrow keys

Just writing this post I feel the buyer's remorse should I choose a HHKB but I'm weak against /g/ memes.

Why so few people shill realforces?
>>
>>57714709
im looking at it too, but you dont lose functions keyts or the other keys you mentioned, you just have to hit function to use them.

im sure you'd get used to it quickly, and theyre all keys used less than the others, for me at least. just placing my hand roughly in the position to hit fn on the hhkb as well as its arrow keys it seems easier than moving my hand to the arrow keys on my current fullsize kb. ymmv

>>57714779
I press function keys pretty often (like f5 to run matlab scripts) so I fear taking the habit of using a fn key for that would be a pain in the neck.
Even more painful is the lack of arrow keys. I took the habit of writing open and close parenthesis/quote/bracket at first and then go in the middle of them with an arrow key and then write the content.(maybe I should try to get them to close automatically as I write the first symbol but I have no such thing in my vimrc yet) Same for the shell / matlab console history : I have the habit to use the up arrow key for that.

I don't have the option for clears or gateron, only mx red or brown.

I currently own a keyboard with red. They're fine, I hate typing on them when I have to write something up but for general use it's fine.

How do browns feel to type on? I have a key tester but it's impossible to know the feel of typing from just pressing a single key. I know a lot of people in "gaming" communities shit on browns but I didn't know if there was a reason or if it was just hipster meme bullshit

And I'm really on the fence about buying blues. They might be too loud. I know I could buy o-rings, but that's an extra cost. Is it that cost worth it for the blues?

Also, I really get fucked with the US layout because if I change to my own layout I have no way of typing the "greater" and "less than" symbols (meme arrows). I still have not found a good solution to this other than just using US and loosing all my language's symbols (which is a no go).

Can I reprogram a single switch to register a different value? If I could, I would turn the left switch into a single key and the remaining key could be used for those two values (exactly as happens on my default layout)

You see the problem here is that the sound of bottoming out is louder then the actuating mechanism of the switch. O-rings do indeed make a difference

People around you (and myself after a while when I used them) hate the click, not the thud.

Yes bottoming out makes a noise but it's the same for any cherry switch, given you hit them with the same strength

Although one could argue that the point of blue is not bottoming out since the click makes you notice when you can stop

They're not that bad, desu. I have a lolita spyder and yeah, you can feel it's cheaper, but right now it's better than all the rubberdomes I've used before. And it actually looks good.

If you don't have the money for this hobby just try to earn more. I wouldn't spend hundreds of dollars on keyboards and keycaps, but hey, to each its own.
>>
>>57720275
you don't have to be so hostile. Yes rich people exist, but you can get cheap mechanical keyboards.
Magiforce, Royal Kludge, Kuiha, and Tomoko all make nice mechanical keyboards for 60 bucks and under. Of course if you want features like program ability, Bluetooth then costs extra.

Just use the template and we will find the best options available

I kinda agree, but as long as people help newcomers choose their keyboards, I don't judge them. There's nothing worse than a closed off, elitist circle jerk.

If you just want a keyboard, you and I are on the same boat. Figure out what your preffered switch is and buy a cheap mechanical. There are no miracles. Go eat something, jerk off, watch some anime.. relax man.

I'm thinking about CM Storm Quickfire XT with blue switches. Is it good idea? This keyboard is cheapest thing with blue switches i can find in my region - and since i want it exclusively for writing, i guess blue switches are the best ones (or am i wrong?). I kinda hate keycap font, but maybe i'll replace it with something different later, if possible.
