Not really related to keyboards, but I've been working on designing a new case for my rig.
Currently making a phone-charging-stand/figurine-stand/cable-organizer/pen-holder type of thing for the standing desk.

3D printer should be here tomorrow. I should order some stuff from alie and see about milling keyboard PCBs. Shit's going to get fun from here on.

Hence, I haven't bothered taking any new pictures, there's not much to show yet, except for some CAD files.

Its convenient because I can carry everything with me on one device. The onscreen keyboard sucks for long typing secession so that is why a small and compact mechanical keyboard is perfect.

>Do you have special designer keyboard bags too?
Do you think everyone with a mechanical keyboard is a hipster? I just carry it around in a laptop bag that my dad gave me.

>>

You can use the laptop's keyboard? Crazy idea I know.
>>
>>57688034
So whats the difference from using a tablet and a small keyboard. You can walk into my office and see dozens of people with ipads and small wireless keyboard. The only difference is that mine is quieter and happens to be mechanical. My supervisor uses an android tablet and a bluetooth keyboard, and she is almost twice my age at 58. Technology progress anon, and bitching about the good old days just makes you look like a fag.

Is this G13 worth a damn? It looks super comfy and I could play and masturbate at the same time, if I can macro key shortcuts or to software functions it'd be god tier, when I used MIDI buttonpads for macros I loved it
$68, or is there better options? Can I mouse with it? Or are these things just a meme?
>>
>>57688217

>>
>>57688249
>Only recently did you hipsters find a "need" for these small keyboards.
Small keyboards have existed since the 80s anon. These 60% keyboards are nothing new. The old ii c keyboards were also 60% and those came out in 1984

now >>57688242 that thing looks retarded

anyone know what brand/type of keyboard this is?

>>
>>57688309
You are kind of right. They were designed to be small enough that you could take it from your job to your home and continue working. Not like a laptop since you had to be constantly plugged in to work, and the monitor couldn't be carried around. They were super expensive and not many people bought them, but they were still a success that they eventually turned them into laptops.
>>
>>57688382

My dad was a systems analyst back in the 80s, so growing up I was exposed to all this weird computer technology. There was definitely a fad for small computers and keyboards before laptops were really a thing, like those mobile, but not really computers. So saying that this is something new is completely wrong. 60% keyboards have been around since before I was, and maybe even before you were born.

In the 80s you could use that thing at your local diner to work while eating your breakfast, and my dad's friend used to do that. So how is that different from today where people use tablets and small keyboards at their local cafe.

You see what I'm saying is that nothing has really changed in the past 30 years, its just that the technology has progressed and things look different, but they still serve the same exact function.

Why don't you guys use mechanical mice to compliment your mechanical keyboards
>>
>>57690308
>Optical mice are generally mechanical
no optical mice aren't mechanical. That being said why would anon still use mechanical mouse. I'll just quote wikipedia

Unlike mechanical mice, whose tracking mechanisms can become clogged with lint, optical mice have no moving parts (besides buttons and scroll wheels); therefore, they do not require maintenance other than removing debris that might collect under the light emitter. However, they generally cannot track on glossy and transparent surfaces, including some mouse-pads, causing the cursor to drift unpredictably during operation. Mice with less image-processing power also have problems tracking fast movement, whereas some high-quality mice can track faster than 2 m/s.

Some models of laser mouse can track on glossy and transparent surfaces, and have a much higher sensitivity.

As of 2006 mechanical mice had lower average power requirements than their optical counterparts; the power used by mice is relatively small, and only an important consideration when the power is derived from batteries, with their limited capacity.

Optical models outperform mechanical mice on uneven, slick, soft, sticky, or loose surfaces, and generally in mobile situations lacking mouse pads. Because optical mice render movement based on an image which the LED (or infrared diode) illuminates, use with multicolored mouse pads may result in unreliable performance; however, laser mice do not suffer these problems and will track on such surfaces.

That is wrong. Back then keyboard had no standard layouts so coming up with different colors helped you identify where everything was in relationship to each other. That is why all the old vintage keyboards had funky colors for their keycaps. This trend continues today because companies have set up a reputation for using certain colors on their keycaps, it has become more of a brand image. Just look at Dolch Pac for Christs sake. The upper 2 keys of the thumb cluster on the ergodox are hard to reach if it is in a flat position. But if you have it in a position where it is angled a bit i find no problems with it. Just don't rest your fingers on the homerow all the time or set rarely used keys there.

What are you talking about? I never said that full sized keyboards are hipster. No seriously where did you get that from? Besides I want good quality keycaps. My rubber dome keyboard from 1991 has PBT keycaps and they look brand new, but it became mushy to type on. I got another rubber dome, but the ABS keycaps developed this nasty shine and texture to them after a year. I can't keep buying new keycaps every year, my PBT ones outlasted the rubber domes. So I just went and bought a mechanical keyboard and some PBT keycaps with the hope of it lasting me a long time, but the PBT keycaps began to fade away and develop a nasty shine to them after a couple of years.

I just want some good keycaps. I wish I could use the ones of my old rubberdome, but its the 90s and nothing had a standard back then.
>>
>>57699689
The problem here is that if you want to get vintage cherry doubleshots you HAVE to buy them through a group buy. I don't like it and would love to buy some nice keycaps, but what can you do about it

Those "hipster companies" you mentioned mainly make fullsize. Minus HHKB.

ABS caps are just preference. PBT wear out too. Why most the old IBMs on ebay look like shit.
>>
>>57699918

I'm not angry I just find it funny that you guys come up with such weird justifications. Like this one guy starting ranting on how Japanese technology is superior to cherry shit. He could have worded it better and said how the capacitive spring in topres allows you to change the actuation distance, which is pretty cool, but he sounded like an autistic weeb. Or there was that other guy that got supper defensive when someone suggested to get a topre clone from Korean (I think it was agk or something). I don't get how someone could get so riled up over the existence of clone switches.

no need to get angry. Obviously not every topre user is like that. You didn't use that argument which automatically makes you better.

You're doubting glorious Nippon technology?
>>
>>57700729
the problem is that Japan has been slaking recently. I mean they had a huge lead over the rest of the world, and now everyone has caught up and began to surpass them. Take a look at Korean tech companies, or how about the fact that the Japaneses car makers somehow let Americans catch up to them. I think it was their arrogance that led to that, and it wasn't until their falling stock prices and debt problems did they realize that they need to step up their game.

If you want one, then get the one with PBT/POM key caps. You lose out on a backlight, but the key cap construction is so much better. As for the case, its just a standard plastic case that you'd find on any modern keyboard. Nothing to talk about, but its not flimsy if that is what you are wondering.
