IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I just bought Thinkpad T30 for 10€ .
Problem here is that It didn't include battery or charger. By the looks of it, it has one stick of 256mb ram and 160gb hdd and the computer itself is missing a lot of screws.

And if I wanted to get this up and running, just the way I like it, it would cost me EUR 93,17 in amazon.
This includes the charge and battery but the 2gb ram is quite expensive (46€) .

Should I pull the trigger on this one or should I postpone and look for alternatives.

What do you guys think? What should I do with this?

One interesting thing to note about T430:
it's designed in such shitty way, that it has a fan inflow in 2,5" cage, which means replacing standard 2,5" drive with much smaller msata to sata board increases airflow, which cools both SSD and CPU/GPU.
Notice like 5C dg drop in temperatures after replacing.

hey /tpg/

I am looking for a relatively new 12.5-13" business laptop

what it should have:

does such thing exist?

Careful of Amazon uk, lots of fake or badly described thinkpads being sold right now. Some guy was selling T60s but was sending XR1. The Mint project looks cool.

the thing i'm experiencing, as an example. i go download some software to work with a board, a project i'm working on. there's a blog post that shows how to compile, install and use the software, but the author based the guide on his ubuntu system, so he assumed you have access to ubuntu repos, commands, libraries, etc.
yeah, i eventually got it done and everything working (i believe) on my fedora system but it would have just been easier to use ubuntu and just be done with it.
i'm thinking of trying ubuntu cinnamon desktop or something. i don't think unity is awful and i don't have to worry about HiDPI support so thats a good fall back plan.

What are some of the differences between a T420 and T430? A friend is really pushing the 430 on me hard because Newegg is having a sale.
>>
>>57694560
Its use will be quite limited even if you restore/upgrade it completely. The performance (both CPU power and RAM amount) can be matched or even surpassed by netbooks from the 2009/2010 period, which also support SATA - you can install a modern HDD or even SSD in a netbook, while you're limited to old PATA HDDs with the T30.
>>
>>57694837
How about cleaning/fixing the cooling system instead? Lol.

>>57694815
You need to do the above asap, all the components are being cooked right now (for instance the HDD is at almost 50 degrees which is way too much). You are drastically reducing the unit's lifespan if you're trying to use it like this. Download the HMM for your model and do the required maintenance.
>>
>>57700475
Fair point

What are your temps with x220 then?
>>
>>57700385
i have a T430s. i really like it. One downside is that the keyboard isn't quite as good as the T420s. But it's faster and I could put on a T420 if I want.
Another downside is the T430s fan is always at audible speeds. It's something to do with the type of CPU in it and the cooling configuration.

These are all old machines though. I also have an X1C3 laptop which is my main computer. It's a lot faster, a lot lighter, a much better display and overall a much better experience. It's expensive and the keyboard is terrible though.
>>
>>57700385
I should add that I wouldn't be using it very often. Only for a week or two, every couple of months when travelling as I have a full desktop.
>>
>>57700427

You can put in every chink battery without need to flash custom bios

I don't really know much about thinkpads desu. I had a T410 and it no longer powers on (the stock battery was dying before that), even using a new battery and cord wont make any lights turn on or anything. So I'm thinking a T420 or T430 on sale will be cheaper than diagnostics/fix since it's probably the port or something internal.

I need a laptop for college and personal use (gaming, consuming media, etc)

I'm thinking about getting a t420. I've read a lot of good stuff about it but i have some questions.

How's the battery life? I haven't found clear info about it yet.

Do I need to get new parts for it or is it great as it is already?

How's the WiFi on it?

What's better than this "legendary" machine for under 300 dollars?
>>

The grilles are just stickers. You can order new ones for cheap.
>>

>How's the battery life?
My 9-cell battery does about ~5-6h with normal usage, ~9 idling.

>Do I need to get new parts for it or is it great as it is already?
It's great as it is, unless you got the version with 1366x768 then you'd have to upgrade the screen to 1600x900.

>How's the WiFi on it?
Good i guess, never had any issues with the WiFi dropping or the like.

I don't think that's true. I think it's just cooler because small HDDs get fucking hot while SSD's don't.
>>

>>

The 9-cell one sticks out at the back.

If you see a T420 looking like a rectangle it has the 6-cell, if it has a giant tumor on the back then it has the 9-cell.

I'm considering buying a T430, but there are a couple things I would like some confirmation on.

What's it like to play vidya on a T430? We're talking about stuff like EU4 and Minecraft.
I've got a Dell Precision M6500 with Quadro, and I'd like to know what kind of downgrade I'm looking at with Intel HD.

Also, I've heard people talking about ThinkPads having poor audio quality. If I'm trying to listen to my vast collection of swamp-power electronics with my $2,000 Sennheisers, what can I expect in terms of quality?

ongelmana tässä nykyisessä semi-rugged koneessa on se, että akun kesto on se 5-3h, joten joudun kantamaan laturia mukana jos kerta käytän koulujutuissa.

I'm looking at getting an x220 and eventually upgrading it (16gb RAM + 850 Pro 512GB).

I really want the model with the i5 2540 and the nicer IPS display.

I found one on ebay that has all of that and comes with a good battery and an AC adapter. It looks like it's in really good condition.

The only thing is that it's 270 dollars.

I have seen some others for 100 dollars less that still have the 2540 and seem to be in decent condition, but I'm still waiting on replies about the panel type.

Assuming they all come with windows 7 (and I'm probably just going to install linux anyway)

is 270 way too expensive for what I would be getting?

Is this correct thread if I have to buy a brand new thinkpad?
The story is, on monday I'm applying for business startup dotation. Big part of business plan is listing of all hardware required to start a business. I want to spend around 2500 (usd equivalency) for laptop only.

I need help because I never even looked at stuff as expensive as this. I believe at this point it's more about avoiding one bad choice among 5 good ones rather than the opposite.

Around this price check I see options like W541, T550, T560... what do tpg?

Bad thing is - I have to state exactly the amount of money I need for it before I receive the money and then, if I do, I can't change the model for slightly cheaper or more expensive one.
>>

Yep, makes it convenient because it's plug and play.
You could use the mpci-e slot too but it's messy as fuck since you'd have to open the laptop every time you want to plug the eGPU.

>I've just finished installing one of those mSATA drives on the inside by taking out the keyboard and was worried that the only available slot to use an eGPU was taken up by that mSATA drive I just placed
Nah as you can see in my reply earlier i also use an msata ssd + 2.5 ssd with the eGPU on.

There IS bottleneck but isn't severe, see pic related for a difference between expresscard gen1 and 2.

>>57703378
The feel of typing is great. Feels clickier and less mushy than my T420 does. The keys are unironically not bad. They curve in just like regular-ass keys, which sets them apart from chiclets.

The thing people don't like is the layout, especially the Home/End/Insert/Delete zone and PgUp/PgDown/PrtSc being moved to the bottom of the keyboard

That being said, the X240 and up have lower travel distance for the keys than the other non-X models, so those keyboards do suck
>>
>>57703683
Just make sure you're not ordering from lapscreen.com, because you don't get the exact panel but rather a 'compatible' one (meaning you're likely to get one just as bad as the stock T420 screen)

Ebay is the best place to look
>>
>>57704703
I recently purchased one with the same specs for 160 USD: 1600x900, 8GB, i5-2540M, 320GB HDD, the only "bad" part is the battery (lasting only 3 to 4 hours) otherwise, it's in near-perfect condition. There's no need to spend over 200$ for a decent t420.

kind of weak reasoning, honestly. You can generally get pretty good info from the Arch wiki or the IRC channel for your distro. >>
What's the TLDR of T430 vs T420 ?
Besides being "one generation ahead", obviously.
I'm seeing same dock, same screen resolution, same dimensions, same RAM sticks.
>>
>>57712714
The HD3000 can do dual screens so it can run two external monitors as long as your Thinkpad is docked with the lid closed.
>>
>>57712748
see >>57701141
>>
>>57712714
I'm talking keeping it closed in the dock and only using the external screens. Not 2 screen on top of laptop for total of 3 screens.
>>
>>57712701
should also mention that you can upgrade it like a desktop (sorta), you can put 3 drives in it (msata and 2 ssd, 2hdd, 1 of each w/e), upgrade the cpu if its not t420s etc
>>
>>57712750
I ment the DP will only run with NVIDIA thats why I never USE MY T420
>>
RN i have a T410, and i love the keyboard.

how different are the keyboards on the 20 and 30?

20 is the same, 30 has a shit layout but different (not better or worse, it's subjective) feel.
>>

Thing is, I live in Finland. And Thinkpads are pretty tough to find. Which again is telling me to go for it.

Some other available Thinkpads I found are:
X230 with i5-3320M, 4 GB DDR3 & 128 GB SSD for 270€.
T430 with i5-3330M, 4 GB DDR3 & 128 GB SSD for 300€
X220 with i5-2540M, 4 GB DDR3 & 128 GB SSD for 250€

I've heard alot of good things about T420, so I was drawn to the T420s the most, but maybe one of these is better for the price. X220 is a bit small for my taste, so maybe not that one though. What do you think?

i am just having the same dilemma and i have chosen the 430 so far. It can only hold 7mm drives, which is a bummer, since i do have a spare disk at home which is 9.5 (420 can take those), but i am going to get an msata ssd anyways. 430 also has a better cpu (less power consumption and a bit faster) along with much improved gpu. the keyboard is worse than the 420 has, but i am planning to replace the 430 keyboard and flash the bios. you also get native usb 3.0. make sure you get the one with 1600x900 display, regardless of getting t430 or 20.

any thoughts on that?

Well, there's also the issue that to avoid the botnet you need to downgrade your hardware or break the workflow you're used to.
>>

Somehow RMS is fine with the former, still using an X60 (according to his website, or maybe he upgraded to a librebooted x200 in the meantime).

>>57713538
Well didn't remember that line.

Still, for most people downgrading to core 2 duos and installing linux isn't a viable solution so they just deal with the botnet.

What? Why? Samsung SSD's are known to be the best. I've got a 2.5inch 850EVO for about a year and its working fine.
>>
>>57715888
Evo are TLC drives. These wear three times faster than MLC ones (samsung pros)
>>
>>57715898
But even then they have a 5year warranty and about 75TB write volume. That's plenty. I intend to use it exclusively as a linux drive. Most of my media will be on an HDD.
>>

still, supporting samsung by buying their TLC drives is a genocide

Intel 525/530
SanDisk X110 (this one is confirmed to be maximum confy on T430: >>57713961)

>>
>>57716013
All of those are way too expensive. I don't wanna spend so much on a drive that I'll use exclusively for linux. Add to that I live in a 3rd world shithole and have to pay an additional 20-30 bucks for shipment.

I guess I'll visit a local computer store and look for used SSD's.
