IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I have: 2520M, 4 GB ram, 1600x900 screen, 256 GB SSD, 320 GB HDD in ultrabay, 9 cell 96%, docking station.

8 GB RAM, right? However, I'm pretty content with the current 4 GB.

Do you guys connect a keyboard to your thinkpad sometimes?

The position of the FN key is right where the control key would be on a normal keyboard and it trips me up. Also I prefer the feeling my mx cherry clears to thinkpad keys.

while I agree with 4 gigs being the minimum
I regularly use 8 or more gigs of ram all the time on my laptop
and it's really nice to have 16 gigs when you want to run VMs
>>
>>57655755
I agree. But I am sure most don't run VMs. In case of running VM's would 16gb be considered bare minimum?
>>
>>57655779
depends on the VM
if it's a command line linux distro then 256MB to the VM is good enough 90% of the time.
but if you want to run windows in a VM you'd need at least 2 gigs of ram to the VM to get it working halfway decently. Then like 4 to make it run nicely.
but still even without running VMs I get near or above the 8 gigs used mark all the time.

Too used to the FN/Ctrl locations. But since I like to use the laptops I flip, I get used to it the third time using a laptop.

page up/down I might mess up more often if im not using the same keyboard for a week.

how can you even see that?

>>57656414
T410's can be sold for under $130 arguably in that spec... Maybe they need money.
>>
>>57656403
I use JP Microsoft IME, I just happen to alt-shift. And they don't do anything in US. getting used to a smaller space and backspace is weird but I prefer it for kana.
>>
>>57656320
what do the keys between the alt keys do (besides the spacebar)?
>>
>>57656546
One changes from katakana to hiragana to half width katakana but also scrolls and replaces kanji after you press space on underlined text. The other goes down the list which I find redundant but still useful. The other switches from Kanas, the tilde key switches to normal text and caps lock extends the list for kanji when it that mode.

Thinking of buying a W500 or T500 as my first thinkpad because muh 16:10. The only drawbacks I can see from them is having an old CPU and no USB 3.0. How good would would one of those be for web dev, lots of java script, NES - PS1 emulators and Quake 3/UT99?

>Quake 3/UT99?

/v/ here

Quake 3 and UT99 will run on almost anything. You'll get triple digit framerates on a GMA 950, let alone the 4500MHD you're guaranteed to have with a C2D, and some W/T500 models ship with HD3650s or Firepros. You'll be fine with either system.

Only downside if you're likely going to have to do some .ini editing to get vanilla Q3 to run in 16:10 resolutions (Quake Live is for fags), and playing an arena shooter with a trackpad is retarded so you're gonna need to lug a mouse around with you.

As for PS1 emulation, you'll be alright with certain emulators but going nuts with upscaling and opengl texture filtering won't work well on the shitty intel IGPs, worst case scenario is your PS1 games actually look like PS1 games so you're golden. Get a controller though, don't be the guy trying to play Crash Bandicoot with a keyboard. Any other emulator up to the 32 bit era will run perfectly on either model though.

As for having an "old CPU", unless you're doing work that is particularly CPU intensive you probably won't know the difference. A solid C2D is 99% as effective as the highest clocked i7 when it comes to standard computer usage (browsing the web, programming/text editing, watching video, etc). Just make sure you have a decent sized SSD and 8+GB of RAM and you'll have a pretty nice little mememachine. I have a T400 with a P8400 at 2.26GHz with 8GB of RAM and an SSD and it performs just as well as my desktop with a 4.3GHz 6600k and 32GB of RAM for general computing tasks.
>>

>>
Redpill me on BIOS whitelists. Does it only affect WiFi cards or does it also prevent you from using "non-approved" RAM, storage devices, etc?
>>
>>57659848

Probably because unlike you we actually know how to maintain our PCs?

I'm sorry that your malware ridden T500 has given you such a low opinion of the Core 2 Duo but the reality of the situation is modern computing doesn't really require a ton of processing power if you do it right.

>>
>>57659848
-20 and -30 have awesome value at the moment and it's hard to get into -40 since they require trackpad mod.

I'd upgrade to X260, T460s or X1C in a heartbeat if someone else would pay for it but I cannot justify the cost if I have to pay for it myself.

>>57659975
Whiltelist only affects PCI-e devices such as WiFi cards. mSATA, RAM and normal SATA are unaffected.

>>57661156
Sounds like all it needed was changing the thermal paste and some cleanup. If you liked the size of X220 you could look into X230 which is pretty much the same except it should heat up less, it has better GPU and uses the new keyboard layout.

Far as I know the major things work. Multi pad touch, sleeping and maybe any kind of video out will not right now, or at least not very well Function keys like volume may need to be configured by hand. I had to in i3 on my older model. Touch pad can be way too sensitive out the box and you may need to faff around with configs. As price is not as issue for you I would get the best screen. The base screen is complete garbage.

You can always upgrade it later. If you're looking at a 15" model, you can go from pic related to >>57664627, given time, money, and a pinch of luck. 14" models can only upgrade the screen to 1400x1050 TN, so they're less worthwhile in my opinion.

>>
>>57665284
I don't know, the t440s from benchmarks and reviews looks fine, the ULV is powerful enough and the chassis is solid, reviews are good. All I need is to reach the performance of a, let's say, 2014/2015 macbook. Keep in mind that all I want is a fluid fullHD preview in Premiere. I know the keyboard got worse with time but I'm not a programmer and I need a fine keyboard, not a toptier keyboard. Can I put a FHD IPS on the t420?
Also something tells me that conditions for a used laptop from 2015 are better than 2012

I have a shitty LS150 now or whatever is called, 15.6" and base C2D, I like that the cooling system is perfect and the thing is well engineered but it is a bit too thick (like 2 floors tall) and the shitty TN really piss me. Basically the upgrade I'm searching for is an overall lighter laptop, a better screen and a usable CPU, battery life is welcome

Chiclet keys are cancer.

The only reason they exist is because the jews at Apple figured they could shave down the size of a keyboard to make macbooks thinner and now everyone is doing them even though they are objectively garbage.

There is no reason to not use standard laptop style keys on a keyboard like that that does not have a thinness requirement reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Some very sound advice here as always. Comfiest thread.
I have a question which may not be 100% related to Thinkpads...

So I have a T420 with 4 GB RAM. I never go over 80% memory usage even with heavy browsing. If I were to upgrade to 8 GB or even 16 GB down the line, would things feel faster or if I don't even use 80+% of the 4 GB I have now, it wouldn't matter?
>>

Could someone link a good seller on amazon or ebay or something? I don't want the battery dying in less than a year. I'm a bit tight on money this time of the year so I'm trying to figure out how much I'll be spending on the battery since it affects the other purchases.

Working on refurbishing a t60 I got for $44. So far there are a few problems with it. The battery cells seem to have died, the CPU is only 32bit, and the keyboard has layers upon layers of dried cum under the keys. Not to mention the broken spacebar. In the end it'll probably have run me $70 for the whole project. I plan to replace the shitty core2duo t2400 with a core2duo t7200, going to bump the ram up to 4GB if possible, and maybe I'll upgrade the hard drive. I already have a keyboard and battery coming in the mail sometime this week.

I am putting together an X220 for my mom for Christmas that I won in an eBay auction, but in the pictures it has that worn down circle on the trackpad. She probably won't give a fuck about it but if I could I'd like to get rid of it. Now, I know on the T420, the texture that can be worn down is just a sticker that can be replaced. Does this also apply to the X220? I'm not sure about this as the X220's trackpad curves downward into the palmrest curve because it doesn't have dedicated buttons unlike the X201.

I ordered a $5 replacement sticker for the T series just in case this can be peeled and if it will fit on an X220. If it won't, I can just keep it for my T420.

What do you think, anons? I'm not going to pay $20 for a whole new trackpad just because some greasy fuck wore it down. Any advice on what can be done about it, if possible?

Depends on the thinkpad model but not much really since most of them come with Intel iGPUs.

>Can it run War Thunder?
My T420 does but you'll need an eGPU setup, see my old as fug pic.

>>57685740
The T420s is easily moddable to get a 1080p display but compared to the T420 the battery is worse and the CPU is soldered so you can't remove or upgrade it.

Why do so many laptops today look fragile? It's like I could stare at it wrong and it would break.

It's a 32-bit memory map chipset (meaning that the whole physical address space is limited to 2^32 bytes). In addition, the chipset is designed so that the whole uppermost gigabyte is reserved for hardware function mapping etc. The first generation Core 2 Duo models such as the X60 and T60(p) are limited to this chipset. A newer chipset allowing for whole 4GiB of usable RAM (and unoficially, with a modded BIOS, even 8GiB) is found in the second generation Core 2 Duo models such as the X61 and T61(p) - however, the tradeoff is that on these (and newer) Thinkpad boards the Intel Management Engine along with AMT is present.

>tl;dr: live with 3GiB of usable RAM and 1st gen C2D, or be cucked by AMT botnet - choose your poison

Hell someone make a T420 with a modern energy efficient processor and give it the thick T420 9-cell battery, it'll last forever.
>>
>>57660233
Checked for truth. Besides, users of Core i vPro boards such as these found in Thinkpads are inherently cucked hard by ME/AMT which only on certain models can be removed (either by installing coreboot/libreboot, or by physical tomfoolery such as http://hardenedlinux.org/firmware/2016/11/17/neutralize_ME_firmware_on_sandybridge_and_ivybridge.html).

Hi all, /a/non here with a memepad question.
I own a T530 that I bought used off ebay 2 years ago. It was in pretty good condition.
I upgraded the ram and put in an SSD where the HDD used to be, and put in the HDD in the DVD drive.
In the last month, it keeps shutting down. Not like automatic update, but as if I took out the batteries and plugged out the charger. I suspect the HDD or the SSD is overheating, although the outside of the laptop doesn't seem nearly as hot to cause this at all.
Anyone have any suggestions or encountered similar issues? I've tried blowing out dust after disassembly but it hasn't helped much, there wasn't much gunk anyways.

This. Interestingly enough, chiclet keyboards existed for a period of time on home computers in the 1980s. Consumers, not being a bunch of retarded morons at that time, recognized them for the garbage shit they were and the design soon died (only to be conjured back up by Applel necromancy a quarter century later).

You can fit 4GiB of RAM, though only 3GiB will be usable (see >>57687253). The top CPU you can fit should be the T7600 2.33GHz (you should doublecheck that with a reputable source though before you order the CPU, I have one in my T60p).

So let me get this straight, you're looking for a newerish thinkpad, probably no older than x230/t430 (which was the first gen. to have the more modern island style keys), and you want it to have a good processor.

To me, pretty much everything in the i series from the start is 'good enough', but are you looking for more than two cores? If so, you'll be headed towards the sort of P series of Thinkpads, and I don't know anything about them other than the ones they're selling right now are pretty expensive and not in the price range.

Are you looking for a dedicated GPU or is an iGPU okay?
>>
>>57689347
iGPU is probably ok. Not going to be running graphics-intensive tasks, obviously not going to be playing video games or anything. If it can play 1080p video, it's A-OK.
>>
>>57689134
>M A D M A N

Absolutely - he asked for the ultimate memepad. You don't get crazy upgrade potential like this (along with relatively good component quality) anymore with the chinkpads of more recent years.
>>
>>57689362
Playing 1080p video should be no issue, I've got an x220 and it runs all that shit just fine, and the x230 has a much better iGPU so basically you should be good in that regard.

So far, the only thing I see in the under 500$ price range is the W530, which is the beefier 15 inch cousin of the T530, has the newer style keys while still having a dedicated volume keys.

If you want four cores, you'll need one that says has a "Q" in the processor name. Like i7 3740QM, otherwise you're getting a dual core.

Dual core would almost definitely have better battery life though. I also just want to warn you that I'm talking completely out of my ass here. I just did some googling and I'm *relatively* sure this is all correct information. Make sure to do some of your own research before spending that much cash.
>>
>>57689459
Also, many (maybe all) of the W530's have a dedicated workstation GPU. No idea how good they are given the age and the purpose, but it's probably better than at least intel's 3rd gen iGPUs
>>
>>57688949
>1920 x 1200
>not 1600 x 1200
Its a shame the W500's motherboard too much of a pain to fit into a 4:3 T60's frame...
Probably too much of a bother to even try to CAD it and print a frame.

>>57688819
T430 you can upgrade to an Aliumware m14x display if you have the 900p Screen/LCD Cable

>>57687827
Just dandy, got off work and went to the bar, I gotta edit a video today but I feel like procrastinating.

>>57687266
I wish Apple would just make a 'thick' Mac Pro again... I do want a 17" MBP one day, or a PowerMac. lol

>>57685849
T430 might have a bit more sluggish processing power, but it will be more robust.

>>57683915
Are you gonna do the CF Card adapter for memory? Otherwise, you sadly got a pretty slow machine... I haven't had a X4x model yet, a few T4xp, X31 and A31p, so I know that pain.

>>57683812
I mean Windows 10 Home is gay, its not Pro, so no bitlocker.

T30 would be regarded as the next durable thinkpad after the 600 series...
R5x didn't have the chassis flex problems of the T4x because of a thicker plastic bottom frame

>>57682906
I paid $160 for a T430s w/ a broken screen
$100 and $120 for a few T430s, these were buy it nows that were JUST listed.
I needed a battery for em tho, those batteries only lasted 30 min i think or was missing them.

>>57679892
Impossible to replace the cells.
Something about current can't be shorted out with the dead battery, soldering a battery is pretty dangerous too unless you know what you are doing... You need a spot welder I think, I just remember it being too expensive for the device and the difficulty/success rate wasn't worth plopping $200 on a welding thing for a $30 or $70 battery.

Please anons i've had this issue for months and can't find anything on the internet about it.

When I replaced my touchpad, I took my keyboard out of my T440S, which required sliding it up to make some screws visible.

When I replaced it, the keyboard went in fine but the 'sliding' mechanism from early is all taut and the frame of the keyboard juts out of the laptop.

Please help? I can't take it off and put it back on as the tension of the sliding piece prevents unscrewing the screws
