IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Hello I work for lenovo.
The retro thinkpad has been finalized.
It'll feature a stunning 16:9 display, our thinnest Island Style keyboard yet for max portability, and for that retro flavor we have added lambs at the top as an alternative to backlit keys! Additionally we'll ad a colored thinkpad logo! However, we will only sell 1000, so be ready!

With that, I would like the highest resolution I can get, be able to run Firefox, Microsoft office (is this even possible on Linux btw?), foobar, and ace player. That's literally all I need. SSD is a bonus too and portability is also a bonus

T430s is what I was considering because it's slim and can probably do all that for a relatively decent price

want to buy a t61p because of the 16:10 screen and 8gb ram support. Do all of them come with the dreaded nVidia GPU? How is the battery life on them for general web browsing and general school workI've seen answers such as 4-6 hours. Are /csg/ batteries a good idea to get in case the batteries are dead?
>>
>>57626608
>Do all of them come with the dreaded nVidia GPU?
All T61p models do, yes. They aren't all suicidal, but the safe units are quite rare.

>How is the battery life on them for general web browsing and general school workI've seen answers such as 4-6 hours
Not even close. My non-p Nvidia T61 barely gets 3 hours out of a good genuine 9cell. My Intel T601F can pull 5 hours tops. The T61p's more powerful GPU will utterly devour battery life.

Overall you should just get a T400 or T/W500 instead. They're still 16:10, 8GB DDR3 is much cheaper than 8GB DDR2, and they're far more reliable machines than T61s.

iirc the x220 ips screens are prone to developing white spots + have incredibly bad ghosting
the x230 ips screens are a newer revision with those issues fixed; basically a drop-in repacement

probably not worth $130 more, but you should try to get the newer revision/part when possible

idr all the nitty gritty deets off the top of my head. you'll need to research yourself fampai

hey /g/ - my current macbook crapped out on me and i'm the market for a "new" laptop
i'm gonna go with a refurbished thinkpad, i just don't know what particular model/series to look for - ideally i want something that balances portability, durability and battery life, that i can find secondhand at a decent price
i need at least 3+ hrs battery life and the ability to run ableton or traktor live - i know ben ufo uses a thinkpad + traktor for djing so i know its possible
is it recommended to buy refurbished over new?

Kill it with fire. Go for T or W.
>>
>>57629583
X220. You can even install OS X on it. Battery life is good - about 1 hour per battery cell (under Linux, but windows/os x should be ok too), go for 9-cell battery if you need a lot of autonomous time.
>>
A bit offtopic here, but which is better for a X, two SSDs or HDD+SSD?
>>
My T420 doesn't recognise my external DVD drive as a boot option, but it has no problem booting from flash sticks. Any way to fix this?
>>
>>57630715
That's literally on topic

I've used both

mSATA + SSD:
Pros:
Much faster read/write speed not just for your OS but for all your files
Useful if you do heavy editing or if you need to be able to read/write files faster on SSD or do a lot of editing or copy stuff with usb 3.0 or whatever
a little lighter, probably also negligibly longer battery life

Cons:
Way more expensive per GB

mSATA + HDD:
Pros: much cheaper per GB, can have terabytes cheaply

Cons:
slower read write speeds
slower copy paste from USB
Drive will turn itself off to save battery so it can be annoying to have to wait a couple seconds each time to reopen stuff on that drive if you've not been using it. This is especially annoying in windows search as it'll freeze for like 3 seconds as it boots up the HDD to search it too, if you've not had it being read for a while, but it is still rather minor

If you shitpost, watch taiwanese handpuppet videos, and do light gaming, HDD is the better option I'd say

Unless you do a lot of actual work that requires heavy editing or constantly copying over raw/large files, you don't really need a second SSD

If you're a richfag though just get a humongous mSATA and a humongous SSD and you can't go wrong
>>
>>57629268
I'd pick the t420 only because of the higher res, triple drive and non soldered CPU.

I am sure you get these questions every day, but here it goes:

Should I rather get a T420 or T430 and replace the keyboard? It will run linux - compiling, programming, ssh to servers, driving 3D printers and other machines, presentations, rtl-sdr client and more. I am looking to upgrade it with an ssd.

I have heard the T420 has a DDR3 interface compared to T430's mSATA, but 430 has USB3 and better internals. I amn ot sure wheter replacing the T430 keyboard for the one from 420- is going to work or not.

Any suggestions?

>>
>>57633294
Do you want a 12 incher or a 14 incher?
The X220 may have a better screen and slightly better battery life.
The T420 has ultrabay (so you can run mSATA+2 SATA) and might have NVIDIA graphics.
>>
>>57633341
>might have NVIDIA graphics

elaborate? how good are these NVIDIA graphics? (i'd use it to play quake and such.) How do I know if the TP has the NVIDIA graphics?
>>
>>57633363
Not very good. It's a CAD optimized GPU, the NVS 4200M. You can check the benchmarks if you want.

If you're not playing anything too modern, the regular Intel HD 3000 will be more than enough to run it to begin with.
>>
>>57633398
just zandronum and xonotic, which arent really intensive on resources.

maybe some early 2000s stuff like fable, halo and such.

All T61s support 8GB RAM. I built a few by buying dead T61ps for WXGA display then slapped the display on an Intel graphics base. I buy without batteries then buy batteries from someone with good Ebay feedback.

I bought a refurbished T410 that was supposed to come with an i5 520M and a god awful 1366 x 768 + 250GB HDD

Should I go play the lottery? The laptop I actually got was a T420s with an i5 2520M, and a 1600x900 display with a 500GB HDD, only issue is a few bright spots on the display.

I plan on buying a Thinkpad 13, and according to only one among all the reviews I have seen the contrast and colours are pretty lame. Is it good enough for movies ? Should I go for a refurbished t420 instead, which is still a bit more expensive here in france ? The display is the only detail bugging me, otherwise the machine seems fine for the use I intend to make of it.

If the display on the Thinkpad 13 is bugging you, you especially don't want a T420 of any kind.
Either get a 12" model with an IPS display, or a 15.6" model with a 1080p display.

I have an old T400 for use as a backup machine. Win7 Pro is installed and working fine.

Really? I've been watching the prices for a few weeks and read the wiki, and that's about normal. It has an ssd
>>
>>57642240
Here's my take on it. My main problem with a T440 is how it's limited to 12GB of RAM. That's not so bad unless you consider a T420 or T430 both support 16GB and a W520 can handle 32. The next issue is there are a ton of T440's on eBay right now under 300 and an SSD is around 50 dollars. Even a 240 GB 850 Evo is less than 100.

Both the x220 and x230 have IPS and the same cooler/wattage, but yeah you can change the keyboard layout without changing the keyboard.

I have gen1 carbon and I actually really like the keyboard, the keys have a solid travel. only problem is it's a bitch to clean, and the touchpad is quite shit so I tend to use the nipple instead

I got a x220 a few months ago.
(i5, 2.6Ghz 4GB was arround 200€ grade A, with a 6-cell and 320 @ 7200 rpm HDD, I already installed an mSata)
And I'm thinking on getting a dock mainly for not having to plug/unplug the external monitor.

Any advice? I'm not planing to carry the dock so I think I may pass on the ultrabay.
I'm looking through ebay, but I'm open to other suggestions (Eurofag)

Just don't come here crying about it afterwards.

I bought an X220 online and they sent me the tablet version instead. Should I return it or just roll with it. I technically got a really good deal but I really would have preferred the notebook version.
>>
>>57643122

Did anyone bite on that? I don't think you'll find too many laptops with that spec to dollar ratio even if it's a lower end Thinkpad.

E series basically means it doesn't have the higher end chassis and stuff, not as durable, etc. Essentially a Lenovo with a Thinkpad keyboard and branding.

If it wasn't 15" I'd be all over that shit.
>>
>>57645707
Look on the bright side. At least you don't have to play WoW.
>>
>>57650055
Your call. If you can Ebay the tablet for sufficient profit then buy a notebook I'd do that.

If you can't be without the computer, buy the notebook first.
>>
Anyone have an X1 Tablet? They're like $550 refurbished with an M5 and 8GB of RAM, wondering if it's worth it over an M3 Surface Pro 4 4GB deal on Black Friday for $600.

How do I find out a laptops resolution if it is not listed?

Let me guess, after that you want help with what to ask the seller, then what to do first thing when you get it and why not ask if chink batteries are any good right away while you're at it?

Hey, I need a laptop for minimum amount of cash. I have a T400 nearby. Is that decent?

I want to make it usable and fast, so I'm thinking of some minimalist Linux distro and USB stick boot. Any guide for this, which distro etc? Does this support custom bios?
>>
Why are most linux DE's so miserable to use with a trackpad? Which one should I use for primarily web browsing and development(in school still so very small pieces of software)?
>>
Is there anything I can put in the CD holder on my T420 besides a Hard Drive Caddy?
>>
>>57650767
Fedora, Antegros, Arch, Solus, Ubuntu, Xubuntu, and Debian I have tried and work fine with trackpad.

Now, stop using a trackpad, and switch to trackpoint like a real man
>>
>>57650749
Yes, the CPU is upgradeable and it supports SATA2 so you can use an SSD on it to go fast.

You could flash libreboot on it if you want to go full freetard too.

>>57650779
Optical drive, HDD caddy or an empty HDD caddy used as storage to keep flash drives, adapters or weed in it.
>>
>>57650779
If you had a t420s you could put battery's in.
Oh well
>>
>>57650767
Plasma 5
>>
>>57650962
No money for ssd, any idea how fast is it to boot from USB?

And yeah I wanna go full freetard cuz full disk encryption etc
>>
>>57651187
Well depends of the USB speeds and the Linux distribution i guess.
>>
You lied to me, /tpg/. My T420 can't handle mpv's interpolation with opengl-hq.

>>57637241
>>57644357

It connects to another USB port on the laptop to give you more current, that's all. Presumably the plain expresscard standard can't deliver the 1A total needed for both USB ports at max current draw.
>>
>>57651511
But it does, and works flawlessly with 1080p cartoons.

At least mine does.

Is swapping the T430 keyboard for the one from 420 a good idea? I know it is possible, but apparently some keys do not work even after flashing the firmware. Is it worth it?

got my bamboo stylus feel in the mail today to try out with my x200. when it touches the screen, the touch is register, the mouse moved to the top left corner of the screen, and a dialog box pops up but it's halfway off my screen and i can't see what it says.

any help would be appreciated.

>>
>>57652244
The only thing I'm missing to max my T420 is the FHD IPS mod, if RMSMajestic releases a working one i'm buying it asap.

There's something satisfying about running an old as fug laptop upgraded by yourself and holding onto it until it breaks or gets deprecated, furthermore it can also play modern games with an eGPU setup.

A T61 can run 24fps 1080p fine so i don't see Sandy Bridge going obsolete yet for a good couple of years.
>>
>>57652321
I 100% agree but I doubt that dude is like us

Where do you guys get your batteries from? I have a T430 and the battery dies within about 30 minutes nowadays. A bit faster if I'm doing slightly more intensive things. I just don't want to order a battery and then have it turn out to be shit. I've been looking on Amazon and Ebay and see that they go for roughly 30-ish to 70 bucks.

Could someone also tell me the main differences between the T430 and T430s? I looked online and did the comparisons and after also just searching my system model from dxdiag (2351AB9) I'm convinced I have the T430, which is what I thought I had.

The idea of putting an i7 (currently an i5) sounds pretty good.
>>
>>57652428
t430s is just slimmer and uses a far diferent battery
if the battery is in the back of the laptop then you have a normal t430
most chink batteries will be ok for a year or two. But get lenovo if you want to use it for 3 or more

Found a LOCKED T510 for 79€ on the local equivalent of craigslist.
Any ways to remove the password? With a Raspberry Pi or something like that I mean, just like it can be used to flash Libreboot or Coreboot

>>57652683
You can't use chink batteries on *30 series and beyond
>>
>>57653267
you can once you reflash the EC
it takes like 3 tries to get it to work, but now I can use my 55++ battery in my t430

i'm looking at two x60s and I messaged the selling asking if they had been tested but he said only to bios. What are my chances that they both work fine?
>>
>>57653486
semi-legit. They're using the wrong pins, which happen to still work on a bunch of machines. Definitely doesn't work on T61/X61 or older.
