Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Reposting my comment from the last thread before we got moved here :)

Is anything in the current ThinkPad lineup worth buying? I'm looking specifically at the T460, T560, or X260.

Would be used primarily for working from home (Excel, Adobe, online databases etc.) and possibly some light gaming (Skyrim, TF2, WoW etc.)
>>
>>57717495
None of those laptops have a decent GPU.
>>
>>57717524
Ah, so it would be better relegated to work purposes only then I suppose?
>>
>>57717540
Well, you can game on them, but only the older titles ... Torchlight 2 etc.

i have a t430s coming in soon

Is it ever worth getting a 1366x768 top instead of holding out for a 1600x900, like let's say its a refurbished t420 for 100 quid or so, low specs but p. good condition but 1366x768 would it be worth?
>>
>>57717960
1366x768 is unusable
Pay extra to get 1600x900
>>
>>57717960
Add the price of the 1600x900 screen and the HD+ cable to the 1366x768 t420 price and then compare it with a 1600x900 t420.

Reposting from previous thread.
For about 2500$ which one should I chose?

In my local store for about that price I can find:

1) W541 i7-4810MQ / 8GB ram DDR3 1600 / 256SSD / 7Pro64 / Intel HD Graphics 4600

2) P50 i7-6820HQ /8GB ram DDR4 2133 / 256SSD / 7Pro64 / NVIDIA Quadro M2000M

3) X1 Carbon 4 i7-6600U / 16GB / 512SSD / 7Pro64 / Intel HD Graphics 520

4) T460s i7-6600U / 12GB DDR4 2133 / 256SSD / 7Pro64 / Intel HD Graphics 520

5) T560 i7-6600U / 16GB DDR3 1600 / 512SSD / Win10P / Intel HD Graphics 520

Last time I had to buy a notebook was 6 years ago... My knowledge is limited.
All 5 listed above are similar in price, W541 being the most expensive while having only 8GB ram, are other parameters so much better?

Trick is - goverment is paying so I can overpay for even slight quality increase. Anything I don't spend is wasted.

I'll be using it for programming, mostly embedded (yea I know) C and C++, but hey I won't refuse some good vidya, however, durabilty > all for me.

Please help guys.

I know, but a windows live usb wasn't able to fix the bootloader for whatever reason. It detected the win10 installation but wasn't able to fix it.

I also fucked up by trying linux at the worst possible time; I was doing an internship in a different city and there were no other windows pcs I could use to make a live usb and I had to submit my report in a weeks time. All that shit stacked up and I decided to reinstall windows. Thankfully, most of my media was saved on the HDD, so at least I didn't lose that.

Spray wd40 in a bowl and add a few tablespoons of WARM WATER to the wd40 to dillute and not damage the computer.

Remove heatsink

Take the wd40 spray fan

Some of the other anons have made good points about dGPUs not being shit anymore. I was only advising against it because my inspiron died after a GPU fault and it was my first laptop. Now I'm on my 3rd which is a t430 and 2nd was a t420, so I don't have much experience with dGPUs. Bang for buck, P50 seems the best, no doubt. If you keep an eye on the temperatures during heavy loads, you should be fine.

I'm just changing my work mode from a company employee to a company contractor.
By starting my own business I can apply for startup dotation (around 5000$). The "only" requirement is 40 pages long business plan and explanation of all expenditures.
I can include all this stuff as necessary while running a software development company, it's just a matter of interpretation.

Anyway while we decided that P50 is the way to go guys, I see I can make simple configuration changes to it.
I can't go with Xeon as that would totally exceed my limit.
But for the same price I can swap i7-6820 with i7-6700 in favor of 512SSD (instead of 256) and 64GB rams (instead of 8).

Do you think its a better option?

Because you have two M.2 ssd slots, you can add more memory later. Or use that 2.5" slot to add a HDD for more cheap storage

it still has nothing to do with gaymur experience

Ok but for that small diference I can go
6820 | 8Gb ram | 256 SSD

6700 | 64Gb ram | 512 ssd (or 256SSD + 1TB HDD)

If difference of cpus is negligible then it looks like second option is more viable isn't it?

You can totally play with that amount of GFLOPS, but you have to settle with older titles

But of course I do understand your concerns
Dauym I didn't that M2000 can get up to 1812.5 of GFLOPS. That is quite near or a bit lower to GTX 1050 Ti (1981GFLOPS)
t.Intel 4400 totally fine with S.T.AL.K.E.R: Lost alpha

I think the cpu is already top notch so you don't have to worry about it

so a while back I got my hands on an X60 thinkpad for free. It has a centrino core duo generation CPU, win7, rotatable screen, a stylus with the right click button, a fingerprint reader, a docking base, external pci card slot, all those goodies and such. I played around with it for a while before the fan went bad and it wouldnt boot. So I ordered a new fan and swapped it out. Unfourtunatly, the person lied when they said the fan fit both X60 AND X61 models. Anyway, I plan on getting the correct fan, but I really am starting to like the idea of having all these do-dads in my laptop, but I already have a really nice inspiron and a top of the line thinkpad is not in my budget. What I want to know is if there has been anything they have made that might be avaliable for cheap, but still able to run reasonably well after recompiling the OS and stuff. It would have to have a stylus capable screen, not just for fingers. I despise touch-screens. I dont like greasing up my machines. A stylus is great though, especially if it has the little right click button like pic related.

Also, do built-in finger print readers generally have any support on linux mint or other distros?

TLDR: Is there a modern version of the thinkpad X60 available? I dont want top of the line, just better than core duo era speed. any recommendations?

Yeah I'm checking the benchmarks now. I will not realise the difference between CPU's but for sure I will enjoy more storage. Plus max ram already and I can change to xeon somewhere in the future.

Does anyone knows wny? Libreboot FAQ and coreboot wiki has no answers to this. Why did they make a libreboot for X200 and skipped the previous generation with obviously older and easily crackable version of ME?

ThinkPad Laptop X220

Intel Core i5 2520M (2.50 GHz)
4 GB Memory
320 GB HDD
Intel HD Graphics 3000
Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit

Microsoft authorized refurbished

$219.99 (Original Price: $399.99)

Is this a good deal? The guide says that a used X220 should be bought at about $220. This one is that price, but it's usually $400. That's what I'm curious about. If they're usually $220 at most, what makes this one $400? That's a pretty good deal in that case, but I call bullshit on it.

Check out the ThinkPad Forums, here's some old machines.
You're likely to pay pretty penny for these to be in great or confirmed working shape. You can get 3xx series and some 7xx series seem to be had for under $60.

I think the Cs models have the terrible slow DTSN displays.

If you can, the 755 has a nice chompy keyboard to type with. I didn't care for the innovative 701C keyboard but there are alot of others who are fans.

The plan is to get my 600X and 770X up and running to be my 'retro' machines.
S30 needs Win2K because it crashes whenever I use Bohdi linux on the internets.

There is no 4:3 panel Tablet anymore, unless you buy a toughbook or get some sort of iPad keyboard case.

Noob question here
I got a 4gb stick of ram to add on to the 4gb already in my x220
Of course I'm an idiot and didn't notice that the existing ram was two sets of 2gb, taking up both slots
So when I put my new 4gb stick in one slot, and leave in one of the old sticks, the computer seems to run strange/sluggish
But just the one 4gb and I think it's fine.
I'm ordering another 4gb stick but anyone know why this happened?

First ThinkPad is gonna be delivered sometime next week, supplied-by-company T430 with 1600x900 reso, SSD, 8GB RAM, that got bought up in a big lot and checked out. Was wondering if going the aliexpress or gearbest/dx/... Route was reliable for stuff like a new 9-cell battery to replace the 6-cell one it comes with, possibly for a T420 keyboard replacement for it if I mind the new keyboard, et cetera.

So, trust /csg/ sources for /tpg/ parts, or shop local?

Anything I should check immediately when the T430 gets here?

Only if your grandma is Shirley Curry. Otherwise it's a bit much.
>>
>>57725359

How long've you had the parts? Is the battery genuine, fake but trying to look genuine, or plain unbranded/different brand? The battery is the main thing to me, but eGPU might be an option down the line, I still have my last desktop GPU.

SSD is already in, already have chink optical bay to 2.5" HDD adapter with a 750 GB drive in it.
>>
>>57725574
Since April or around that, battery since August.

It's fake trying to look genuine, lacks the Lenovo logo and none of the serial numbers match with what Power Manager displays but delivers just like a genuine one from what I've seen (~6h with normal usage, ~9h idling) so i guess they just slapped brand new cells and flashed a generic firmware in a generic 55++ battery case and called it a day.

It was $50 and no one but the chinks do free worldwide shipping so it was my only option.

Aight lad thanks for the help, last question though. What msata should I get and should I just get a 60gb one?

I think i'll install arch on it then make a small windows partition incase I need it for werk
>>
>>57728533
first of all, you don't even really need to replace any parts in most thinkpads that are out there; most of them are alright

most of the time, people replace/add SSDs or new HDDs, RAM, screens (last one mostly just to replace the TN panel or 1366x768), and in some very rare cases, the CPU

if you don't know how to do those upgrades, either find a guide somewhere online or go to some local store and they'll do it for you
if you're just not sure about where they go and such, just look at the manual for your model (in your case, T420) although it's pretty intuitive, there are even marking on the bottom
>>
>>57728569
>What msata should I get and should I just get a 60gb one?
Whatever you can afford and has the best price/performance benchmarks, everything is the same shit don't fall for the memes or the samshills.

I'd say avoid <120gb ssds because they're piss slow and get a 240gb one, that should be future-proof enough and good for multibooting various OSes + applications on them since you're going to use the other drives as slow HDD storage.
>>
>>57728624

I'd suggest 240gb but as i said earlier each requirement is subjective so if you think you'll be fine with 120gb get a 120gb one instead plus a 240gb ssd it's only a couple of bucks more most of the time, also max supported is 1tb so go wild.

>im considering buying a T420 for general use (not gaymen) in the future. what do i need to know?
it's gud labtob
You could also play modern games with an eGPU setup and optionally upgrading the CPU.

>but i understand that there are upgrades for these laptops that you can do. what would these be?
For the T420 you can upgrade:
>CPU from stock dual core i3/i5/i7 to a quad core i7
>RAM to 2x8gb sticks for 16gb total
>Screen to 1600x900 if you're using a 1366x768 screen
>Battery from a 6-cell one to a 9-cell one
>Triple drives if you want (msata ssd + 2.5" hdd/ssd + another 2.5" hdd/ssd in the optical drive slot)
>Capable of making an easy eGPU setup with the ExpressCard port if you want gaymen
>Docking Station if you want to use it as a desktop/laptop hybrid

>im not terribly hardware proficient; the extent of my knowledge concerning component installation and replacement is the mobo, gpu, and psu on my desktop on an as-needed basis
You have a hardware maintenance manual with detailed steps about replacing every part inside, it won't be hard.

Sorry for asking a stupid question, but I'm at a bit of a loss after exhausting my search engine
My T420 has a Nordic layout, but as I'm learning to use vi and programming, I'm realizing how absolutely garbage it is for that purpose.

I wanna have an alternate layout and I can figure out how to change it just fine, but using KDE's keyboard model menu, I can only find older Thinkpad model.
I'm not sure where to proceed from here. Just count how many keys the keyboard has (yes I seriously couldn't find it anywhere I looked up, despite finding FRU numbers (45n2080 ; 45n2150 ; 45n2220 if you're curious) and pick a generic layout of that number?

I'm also not sure what'd be best practice for a programming layout. I often write in Danish, so easy access to æ o å is necessary, as well as the umlaut for when I write German, but I'm not sure if that's best achieved by just having two layouts and switching to Danish when I need it, or if there's a Nordic programming layout that would work

I have switched from 1366x768 to 1600x900 and i would not go back even if you were to cut my dick off. As someone who does a lot of CAD work and 3D printing stuff (on linux only, which is an adventure rigged with crap), so the ability to see a lot more things is great.

I need durable tanky laptop to watch movies and make websites in my free time in train or at uni (cant take the lenovo I have now cuz its fragile as fuck, already have 2 dents and bent radiator ribs).
I can buy x201 with i5-m540 and 4gb ram now, or wait month or so and get x220/t420/t520 with i5 2520M 4gb.
Will this x201 be enough for chrome/firefox with 5 tabs + sublime/brackets and 720p video? Would I be able to run visual studio or android studio on it too?
At later on I plan to throw SSD in it too and don't mind buying and carrying additional bateries, though ~2h on battery would be nice

Pic kinda rel, my dad used to have this model and it was almost undestructible
>>
>>57734315
Wanted to type indestructible or undestroyable and I managed to merge them, fuck me
>>

get a toughbook
look for Panasonic CF-30 or CF-31

You can choose it by taking a bit older generation cpu

These machines are tanky as fuck
>>

By durable I've meant tough enough to not get cracked when I place my backpack on the floor (my y510 got damaged this way), not to survive getting parked on by a truck, lol

I think i found a good deal:
Lenovo T420

i5 @ 2.3GHz
4GB of RAM
500GB Hard Drive

for $140

t420s for $145 i just want it for the 1600x1900 resolution
Should I?

I have already L420 (got it for $75) and t440p (cost me $290). They are very cheap in my country (mexico) because nobody knows about memepads
>>
>>57736053
lel i mean 1600x900
>>
>>57736053
>1600x1900
that looks rad

By the way the t420s has worse battery than the t420 because it's smaller and the cpu is soldered instead of removable like the t420.

If you don't give a fuck about those things go for it.

which is the recommended expersscard usb 3.0 adapter for t410 ?

they're like $5 so it's not a big deal

thanks, anything else i should consider for the expresscard slot ? I think the usb 3.0 one is the most practical one, altho i haven't really needed it so far, just want to max the t410, was thinking about changing it, decided otherwise.

What are recommended upgrades for a x201?

Does it make sense to install the Intel Management Engine firmware update? From its version history (pic related) it seems like it's mostly more features added to the AMT backdoor, for instance
>Added VeriSign RSA_SHA256 and Cybertrust Root Certificate hashes
Do these hashes enable more entities to make use of the backdoor?

Had anyone encountered problems after an upgrade of the regular BIOS of the x201? One person mentioned that after the upgrade the system started displaying an error on each boot requiring a key press to continue booting.

>>
>>57737630

>>
>>57737676
T420 is just modern with up to date specs
T410 is ironlake while t420 is sandy bridge

Both of them pack the classic superior modularity and keyboard design

Remember that these machines are not for gaming, unless you get an eGPU

t.Ironlake cpu and can barely play danganronpa 2 at 1366x768
>>
>>57737761
not interested in it for gaming, already have machines for that. i want this strictly for programming with no distractions
>>
>>57737819
Then you should pick any T420,T410,X220,X201,W520 with no chiklet keyboard

You'll love the tactile feel of the keyboard fox example in T420 so you should keep your eyes on those, but if it comes to programming, Does the size matter?
>>
so my x220 is way better than my other laptop except the trackpad. it barely moves the cursor. and solutions in windows 7? like a separate trackpad setting??
>>
>>57737877
yes the keyboard is the main reason im deciding between those two. Size doesn't matter as much but i like the 14" its a good size
>>
>>57737893
The trackpad in that is a bit unfortunate. Have you looked the synaptics soft settings?

>>57737912
I think you should go with the T420 or T410 because they have more modularity than X-laptops however, X-laptops are extremely compact and easy to handle, even though they can get a bit more hotter due to the size of its cooler
>>
>>57737893
increase the sensitivity or join the trackpoint master race

It wasn't that much shit before the last "muh flat design" remake.

What I don't understand is why they can't offer driver packs for a given model featuring all drivers and software in one package (ZIP or ISO). Downloading manually each and every thing is a fucking chore, not to mention if you want to check every hash of every download.

Is the serial number globally unique? If so, providing it at their website is a no-no because it links the serial with your internet connection.
