Please avoid using the term “photoshop” as a verb, meaning any kind of photo manipulation or image editing in general. Photoshop is just the name of one particular image editing program, which should be avoided since it is proprietary. There are plenty of free programs for editing images, such as the GIMP.

What do you guys think about Fuschia?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Fuchsia
https://fuchsia.googlesource.com/

- Microkernel
- Free of unix, linux, gnu
- MIT/BSD licensed
- source code is managed with Jiri (written in Go), not git
- Apps coded in dart
- Has interfaces for Go, Python, Rust, ...
- Rendering is done through vulkan or opengl
- file system written in Go
- source based package manager written in Go

what google plans to do with this is still unknown. it is say that current OSs are not suited for virtual reality which could be the reason for this.
>>
>>57542430
Experimental project at best. Google have a bunch of these.
>>
>>57542533
This one seems to be far more than experimental. lot of stuffs already been done (a microkernel, a build system, a package manager, a hardware accelerated renderer, some drivers, some apps, a local file system, a distributed file system, a terminal emulator, a shell, ...)

android is problematic to google (java, mobile centric, single user centric)
linux is bad for vr (high latency)

a new os from scratch actually does make sense.

As every sane embedded system.

The Linux part will be another walled garden as barely can find anyone embedded Linux developer not to mention this microkernel with literally zero background. It would was sane in 2006, but that ship is gone and breaking backward compatibility will destroy what Google build up in the past with the Android mess.

generic isnt designed for one specific device, but a wider range. may be slower, less optimised & lack specific features, but may work on lots of hardware.

Well, Debian has lots of instructions and recommendations on their website about how to install nonfree programs and drivers, that doesn't help also.

Trying to setup vga passthrough with qemu + kvm. I use the q35 machine model, drivers installed, etc. With vga arbitration enabled or disabled and emulated graphics further enabled, windows can boot in safe mode but not in normal mode (stops at the "starting windows" screen before completing the animation). With emulated graphics disabled, no video output happens.
With the pc machine model, I can get output until the boot screen with emulated graphics disabled, but then it halts. In the case of the pc model, I can't even boot in safe mode.
None of the guides seem to help. kvm=off is used. No error is reported by qemu. Guest GPU is nvidia gtx 1070, host gpu is integrated intel chip based on i965.

dmesg does show that vfio doesn't seem to map the gpu into the vm, but the gpu is properly detected in the guest and installing the driver worked fine so I don't get it.

I run linux on a laptop at home but Windows at work with Linux in a VM. I guess my normal shitposting isn't really enoughtto pick up any fundamental skills.

FIXED!
Turns out that every single guide out there is completely wrong!
x-vga=on is primary vga passthrough for vfio, it is NOT vga arbitration and it is NOT generic passthrough. Disabling it allows passthrough to work without a hitch so far since I was passing my vfio-pci'd gpu, not a primary gpu.

Only because they removed options and made it look like a fisher price toy doesn't mean the buntu installer is actually easier. You can always use the nonfree netinstall if you are new.

Call me crazy but I think systemd should have a package manager as well. It'll unify Linux packaging system.

I know rpm is the current standard but Debian/Debian based distros are being left out.

I would like to dual-boot the core/minimal/debloated/whatever version of Ubuntu 16.10 with Windows 10.

At first I burned the Yakkety MinimalCD, intending to
sudo apt install --no-install-recommends ubuntu-desktop

I now have the full Ubuntu 16.10 ISO on a bootable USB drive; is there a way I can do the minimal install with it? Using the default installer on that 'LiveCD' does not give me any such option.

Thanks in advance.

>>
>>57553006
i said code, not source code. you could provide a code object file to link with the kernel without giving the source code but gplv2 forbids that. the binary blob in the kernel are pure data, often declared as a simple byte array like

char *blob = {0xAD, 0x1C, 0x88, ...};

it's not code linked to the kernel to be executed by its environment.

Install Debian, it comes with deblobbed kernel by default and if you need a blob (for example for your wifi), you enable it explicitly. Otherwise: GNU Linux-libre.

if you want to learn about linux compile it, read the documentation, read about modules, read about how it started and changed over time and about the current code guidelines. If you want to learn about openVPN install it, read the manual and use it, if you want to learn about SSH install openSSH, read the manual and documentation and use it. You see the pattern. a few other good reads are the suckless project and GNU + the FSF and FSFE, maybe a bit about licenses.
for specific fun projects try some sort of secure home automation system, which is pretty advanced or setting up your own home server.

Please help /g/. It's my first time programming in java on arch and it compiles perfectly:
$ javac Program.java
But when I try to execute it:
$ java Program
This error shows up:
Error: Could not find or load main class Program
I've opened the terminal in the same folder. I've installed the jdk for java 8, as the wiki says.

>harder to install
not really, the process is very similar with some exceptions. you should be fine if you just follow the handbook.
>maintain
not really. then again i don't know what you meant by maintain but it's as stable as you make it yourself.
>but I'm not sure of the benefit of building everything from source is worth it.
I would say it is. Just try it for yourself
>They're similar because they're both minimal start with noting distros
so ubuntu netinstall is similar to gentoo? cool.

Use C like a real man.
>>
>>57554454
sure, there's little difference between distros except for the preinstalled packages and the package manager, so yeah I'd they're similar

But anyway, maybe I will try it then

I'm learning it at the uni. Please help.
In my uni we use debian and this works perfectly. I don't get how the compiler works perfectly (it shows errors when there's something wrong) but then it can't find the Class.

>>57554482
use genkernel to compile your kernel if you haven't done it before yourself. that's where you're most likely to fuck it up.
>>57554475
this. java isn't even a fucking real language
>>57554495
>>57554517
stop learing it and start learning something real like C
>>
>>57554431
Correct, you can use a net install or CD/DVDs.

There is no easy to obtain single complete installation image.

You either need good enough internet to do the net install or have 8 blank CDs laying around.

On top of that, most wifi drivers are not supported because Debian does not package any proprietary software, further complicating the install.

because we're precisely that, people.
unlike your dirty ass which doesn't feel any shame in calling java a programming language

Installed ubuntu 16.04 it worked for a while. Updated video drivers. It crashed. Fix that. Installed Ubuntu update. Now it boots directly to minimal grub bash and anytime I use the exit command it just goes back to the grub command line a couple times then goes to the no media detected insert disc screen

I'm trying to install Debian, and I'm getting these errors

"Failed to determine the codename for the release
An installation step failed. You can try to run the failing sytem again from the menu, or skip it and choose something else. The failing step is: Install the base system"

What do i do?
>>
>>57554934
what exactly did your try to do?
>>
>>57554985
I downloaded the net install, and was just going through the normal install process
>>
>>57555010
i doubt that was the stable one and that you followed the installation guide. this sounds a lot like user error. please provide what you choose.

How can I change my default window manager on Debian? I've already tried the update-alternatives way andit didn't work. Any ideas?
>>
Hi /flt/, I've been using Mint for the last 12 months and I like it, but I'm ready to move on to a proper OS now. If I were reinstalling on Windows, I would back up my file system so that I can restore from it in case I fuck up/want to go back to what I had. What's the equivalent process on Linux? I could just manually copy my file system onto my hard drive (which I might do anyway since it's not that big), but is there a more sensible way of backing up Linux OS snapshots to restore from later?
