Is the 6600k and RX480 the build of the year?

In terms of value for money and longevity I'd say it offers more than the 1060 but next year we'll be getting a new amd cpu and probably cheapish ti versions of the nvidia cards
>>
>>57526666
I guess so Satan.

Also open source drivers. I might snag a 480 gb for my 6600k system.

so I have some crappy rams and I'm building my dad a pc for browsing and watching movies and I wonder if it's better having 1 DDR2 800 of 2 GB installed or adding a ddr2 667 which will make the other work slower

I want wicked sick FPS and I can't ditch muh IPS panels. Can I do two 1080p monitors, one IPS 60hz and one TN 144hz on one card and switch between them when games call for it? Never dual monitor'd before. Am I missing any obvious drawbacks or pitfalls? Am I stupid?

hey fags, answer, that's better 3GB RAM of RAM at 667 or 2 GB of RAM at 800?

Can someone recommend me quality fans and a full tower case?

I'm looking for good airflow and low noise fans. Not 100% on the case but I need it to be quite and fit lots of hard drives.

I have been out of the loop since early 2012 when built my current desktop. I currently have a Fractal Design Define R4, 2 dead Noctua Fans and 2 dying and sqeaky Cooler Master Excalibur fans that all need replacing.

I don't mind paying a small premium for better components.

Upgrading my PC. My processor is pretty old, it's a Intel i5-2500 (Socket-LGA1155, Quad Core, 3.3Ghz, 6MB, 95W).

I am not at all trying to be funny with this, can someone explain to a newfag why this is allowed? I know they are at different clock speeds and all, but why is a cpu from two years ago the same price as a 6th gen i5?
>>
>>57527430
It's allowed because intel has no real competition.
There's a rule with intel and it is that they never lower prices on old products.
>>
>>57527430
old one is faster
>>
>>57527430
They aren't being made anymore probably. CPUs are stagnant because Intel hasn't had competition, so even the used market is expensive because no one needs to upgrade

Hi friendos

Ive currently got a shitty build: i3 , GTX650, 8Gb of ram. My friend says I dont need to bother upping the i3 and should just get a better card and double the RAM. Ive got like £300-£400 to spend (Uk), thoughts?
>>
Hey gents,

My current setup is an i5 2500k, 8 gigs of ram (ddr3 i'm guessing) w/ a Radeon HD7850. The gpu died, is it worth keeping the rest of the setup or should i build a new one from scratch instead of replacing the gpu? I haven't exactly been following the trends on the desktop tech for like 3-4 years now and don't know if just replacing the gpu would cause bottlenecks etc.
>>

Which i3?

I guess a new GPU will net you better fps gain for the money.

A new system would mean new CPU, ram and mobo.

Look into the RX 470.

Graphics card burned out a month ago, and I've been saving up to buy a new card on Black Friday.

I can't decide if I want to buy a 1070 or 1080. I've heard pretty bad things about the evga models as well, so I'll be picking up a MSI one for the first time.

The games I run aren't particularly intense, I play Dota, WoW, and Overwatch, and occasionally play the odd AAA game, but I want to upgrade to a 1440p 144hz monitor sometime next year, so I'm looking to future proof my computer.

Honestly the 1080 seems like a no brainer, but it's out of my budget. I don't want to spend more than $550 USD, and I doubt the Black Friday discounts are going to be that good.

What do you guys think I should go with?
>>
I'm currently using a 6600k in a b150 motherboard and 2400 mhz ram that is being clocked down to 2133 because of the chipset. I am considering purchasing a z170 motherboard for about $100 to allow overclocking of the CPU and the ram to clock up.
I know it's going to varry by the game but I'm thinking I'll see anywhere from a 5-10% increase in FPS. I'll also gain to ability to use a nvme drive as I'd like to buy a sm951 on ebay.

Do you guys believe this is worth it? It seems some games benefit none from overclocking the 6600k, some anywhere from 2-4%, and games like overwatch and wow up to 10%.
>>
Guys, got a new monitor and GPR but with the black friday sales coming up, I'm thinking about burning some cash.

Would it be worth my while to go from a 3570K @4.2 GHz and 1833 DDR3 to a current-ish i5 and DDR4 ram?

Mostly for gayman and stuff. Got a 1070 and a 2K monitor.
>>
>>57527881
How often are you unable to hit 60 fps in the games that you play? Try to find cpu scaling benchmarks for your games and extrapolate to your proposed upgrade.
>>
>>57527754
for those games a 1070 will blow them away I'm sure

>>
>>57527638
8GB RAM is fine, CPU is probably fine. Just get an RX470, 480 or GTX 1060. Could probably upgrade your CPU to an i5 with your mobo's socket if you wanted to with that budget

>>57527650
Just get a new graphics card

>>57527754
Don't buy a high end graphics card until you buy a high end monitor. A 1060 will run all the games you listed at 1440p high FPS anyway

>>57527793
No I don't think it's worth it. Just live with what you have. If you aren't getting the performance you want the culprit is your graphics card

The Fury is a bad choice for 1080p. It's not worthwhile until you hit 4K

If you're getting a Z170 mobo, and cooler, and OC'd RAM, you should probably get the i5 6600K as well

>>57528217
The K CPUs are only for overclocking. In that case you need a Z170 mobo and you want 3000MHz DDR4.

If you get the i5 6500, get a B150 mobo and just make sure that it supports DDR3

But if I just run the vidya on one screen at a time? Like if I have both screens turned on all the time, but if I'm playing Counter Strike I only have it open on the 144hz panel, and if I'm playing something like The Witcher I only have it open on the IPS panel? >>
Not sure if this is the place to ask.
I need a new monitor, looking to spend about $200.
This means I can either get 1920x1080 with 120 or 144hz, or 2560x1440@60hz (no ultrawide memes).

What would the best value monitors be for each?
>>
>>57527754
1070 will run all of those at 1440p 144hz, and it'll run AAA games at 1440p 60-144hz
>>
Hey guys, doing two identical builds for my wife and I and I have a couple questions. They'll be used primarily for games and basic tasks.

Regarding RAM, how important is speed? I notice that one of the cheaper motherboards I saw has a category for "memory standard," which it lists as DDR4 2133. Does this mean that this board won't support DDR4 3000?

Secondly, I'm looking at an i5 6500 and a GTX 1060 (6GB). Will this setup effectively run most current games at 1080/60 with settings turned up?

I appreciate the advice. Feel a bit jetlaggged as I haven't done a build since 2010. Thanks.
>>
>>57528124
The PG278q (the TN version of that same monitor) is $500 refurbished.
And I'm sure "refurbished" is just the gaymer children who bought it for a day then had their mom return it so it's basically new

Any monitor without some kind of adaptive sync is a bad buy. There's HDR in the pipeline too

>>57529196

>>57529221

>>
>>57529344
Adaptive syncs are useless if you're getting the full max framerate anyways. And HDR will be an ultra expensive meme before it becomes commonplace. I saw an HDR tv and I wasn't impressed, maybe when better HDR mastering becomes big but for now it's just an unimpressive gimmick. One that is advertised as the future of displays but really is not a significant difference at all once you have a top-tier panel

>>
>>57530058
There's no such thing as a "high-end motherboard", they're all just a chipset tacked onto some chinkshit PCB.
He needs a Z170 chipset. That's not "high end" or "low end" that's just the chipset needed to overclock skylake
>>
>>57530090
But there is when you will overclock as far as im aware.

Just like GA-Z170XP-SLI would fall in the low end and GA-Z170X-UD5 would fall on the high end.

>>57530106
Gigabyte entirely falls in the low end
Features do not equal quality

I'm such a fucking noob sorry guys.
>>
>>57530106
If you get a Z170 motherboard, it will be ready for overclocking. Not that skylake lets you fuck with voltages much anyways. Z170 only exists to overclock skylake CPUs. Maybe the non-z170 "low-end" as you would call it can't support high voltage but then again those are made to not overclock
>>
>>57530106
The ultra durable line is fairly solid as far as mobos go, but don't just try to classify motherboards as good and bad. Just pick a recognizable brand with a warranty, because like anon said, motherboards are often the first component to fail. there's no point in paying extra hundreds of dollars for "motherboard quality" when you really don't gain anything except it working as advertised.
Get the chipset you need, then the features you need, then pick brands
I just hate seeing $400 motherboards in people's build lists when the $100 mobo does the EXACT same things, just without extra paint

Real talk is going for a good 2K build right now worthwhile when for less than half the price I could go for a really good 1080p build? Is performance going up and cost going down fast enough to just sit on a 1080p machine for a couple of years and upgrading when 2K/144hz/G-Sync is cheap enough to get into with a budget build?
>>
>>57530436
1440p ("2K" is dumb and relies on the assumption that 1080p is a "1k" unit of pixels) isn't very expensive as it is.
1440p at 144hz? That might be worth waiting for, as there's only 2 or 3 brands that sell those and they're taking full advantage of their position to have crazy high prices
G-sync will likely always be expensive

Dude, look it up.
there are specs.

For a technology forum, there's a surprising amount of people that don't look things up.

Click on the newegg link to your case, then go to specifications in newegg.

DDR3 or DDR4 ram? Does the fact that DDR4 has way higher CAS latency make a difference?
>>
>>57531159
DDR4. It's clocked much higher so it is still faster.
>>
>>57531171
What if I can get the same clock speed for DDR3 as I can for DDR4?
>>
>>57531192
If you're buying now you want DDR4 and of course a platform that can use it.

DDR4 latency is no problem considering the speeds it runs at. RAM latency refers to the number of cycles it takes to retrieve the memory value [or something], so if it's cycling way faster there is no increased time latency

Trying to build this on a semi budget.
Mostly for gaming.

Total war games, want to play deathwing on almost max. GTA V on almost max if possible. Mount and blade/fallout with a shit load of mods maxxed out would be good.

The reason the i5 6600 is there and not a 6500 is because a friend is going to buy the cpu as a birthday/christmas present and said he would spend up to £200. So why not spend the full amount since its not my money.

The point of DDr4 is that it can reach unbelievable clock speeds at the same voltage, if you're not getting high speed DDR4 you might as well be getting DDR3, they're really not much different, especially when latency goes up with speeds so the difference is even smaller (higher speeds still wins though)

Can someone weigh in on my new build?

My current system's motherboard is dying and it has an old as fuck 2500k. It still works well, but the options for replacing the motherboard are limited and I need a small PC since space is at a premium for me right now.

So I figured I should just build a new PC.

The H90, PSU, and GPU are all coming from my current PC, the PSU is 4 years old, the cooler 2 years old.

Is there anything else in my computer that should be changed besides those three things, which I plan to change in the future, just not now since I am broke?

Or am I downplaying the boost entirely?

The boost is noticeable, but not really worth $300 unless money is no object to you.

Bootleg SLI 1060s cost about half as much as a 1080 and have the same performance (hence why they don't have SLI bridges or drivers that actually support SLI, because the whole thing is a sham), but that's how it goes.

Capitalism.

I asked this question last thread but i fell asleep befire getting a reply:

I honestly don't have any idea what goes into building a computer so how hard would it be to simply buy the same parts as someone else and assemble them?

I've heard that building a computer is as simple as plugging in the right parts but I don't have the money to figure out what the right parts are.

As far as budget goes I can spend between 3-5k (that also includes monitors of which i plan to get 3).

The setup I'm aiming for will have a huge 200mm fan at the front, 240mm rad at the top with the two 120mm fans on it, and then one 140mm fan at the back.

I'm thinking maybe the 240mm rad is overkill for an i5-6600k and maybe I should just opt for the 140mm rad + fan combo. Seems like I might just be wasting space by not having a 240mm rad though

want to build a new system next year on the new LGA 2066 R4 socket with a skylake-x CPU.

However as I understand it, that chipset will not utilise PCI express 4.

Since the spec for pcie4 is finalised next year, is it a big missed opportunity for intel? The next high-end chipset won't come for many years.

So if I want a top of the line PC with tonnes of bandwidth for graphics cards and NVMe SSDs, what do?

I already have bought some parts. RAM is left blank because I will pick up the cheapest 2x8GB kit I can get. CPU and mobo will be from Microcenter. I'm doing the gamen (1080p 60fps) and some light CAD work. I want it to last for 5 years or so. I might upgrade the GPU in between.

http://pcpartpicker.com/list/djMzkT

Biggest concern is the CPU. Do I go for the 6700k, or get the 6600k. DX12 has been seeing good benefits with hyperthreading, is it worth it to sink a couple extra bux into the CPU for longer lasting performance? Do you guys see there being greater benefits to having 8 threads in the next 5 years?

So here's my dilemma

Here pictured is my lovely desktop, a 2006 HP Pavilion m7750n. I can't seem to let go of it.

>4GB of DDR2 RAM (latency/frequency unknown)
>1GB AMD Radeon 5770 HD
>2.66GHz AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+

I love it to death, but the cpu bottleneck makes CSGO nearly unplayable. I'm a broke college student, and I want to upgrade the best that I can with the most power per buck possible. Keeping my old case and graphics card.

Used parts-wise
1. The size of the case will allow for a micro atx board. (chipset needs to be compatible with selected cpu)
2. I'd like to go with an i5 or i7 from no longer back that Sandy Bridge ~2011

I will purchase new memory, storage, and power supply. Any help that I can get searching the internet would be great!

It will definitely be better to have more threads in the future. If you were just going for a 2 year build the benefits may be minimal, but I fully expect games and other programs to take advantage of more cores within 5 years. You can already see it sort of happening with DX12. I'd say the 6700K is worth it for your needs.

Different cards with the same GPU inside may have:
-Different heatsink/fans, which leads to
-Different ability to dissipate heat, which leads to
-Different average operating temps, and
-Different noise levels

Check reviews, see which card gives the best temps and lowest noise. If roughly the same temps/noise, get the card with the better warranty. If that is ALSO the same, get whichever card has a nicer colour. Or flip a coin.

>>
>>57533877
If you buy the 6600K then RAM speeds won't change as you overclock. You adjust the multiplier, which is set at x39. Base clock (BCLK) is set at 100MHz, and this is the thing you change when overclocking non-K CPUs.
BCLK OC at 4.4GHz:
x39 multiplier x 112.82MHz base = 4.4GHz
Regular K overclock at 4.4GHz:
x44 multiplier x 100MHz base = 4.4GHz

Note that the base clock increased by 12% in the first example, so your RAM speed would also increase by 12% - RAM frequency is also tied to the base clock of the CPU, which is why doing a BCLK overclock increases your RAM speed.

Current yes, future no. You'll probably need to replace the GPU in 2-3 yeats if you want high/ultra/ whatever setting, if you're fine with medium or only play non-demanding titles, you're absolutely good to go.

If he really wants to spend his shekkels like the good goy he is, tell him to get the Gigabyte Z170X-UD5. That's a great non gaymur trash mobo.
