I'm trying to install an iso on to my windows 10 laptop. I want to completely remove windows but the disk setup is labelling / as Windows 10. Would it be best to wipe it outside of the installer first? I'm not sure if it is doing what I need it to already and just labelling it as windows 10 or if windows 10 is still going to be there (I have set it to format).

I cannot think of such a file, that which when renamed, would change the default behaviour for screenfetch.
Either way, I suggest that you kill yourself for being such a pretentious, obnoxious, try-hard. No one cares which distribution you are using, except for people giving you support. If you wants Arch's support, install Arch.

Guys, I'm trying to get a pager to word wrap at whole words, rather than partway trough words. I've tried this in less, most, and w3m and I can't see to see a way to do it.

Is there any alternative that I can used that still uses the $PAGER variable?

Basically I want it to output with formatting similar to a man page.

Any way I can do such a thing? I've even tried making nano (with the option -r 70) my pager, but that just quits instantly.

Good job, son.

Just made this one out of boredom:
    #!/usr/bin/env bash
title="$(mpc current)"

length="${#title}"

percent="$(mpc | sed '/playing\|paused/!d; s/.*(\(.*\)%)/\1/')"

offset="$((length * percent / 100))"

printf '%s\e[35m%s\n' "${title:0:offset}" "${title:offset}"

It prints the title colorized, based on elapsed time (currently just ansi escapes for testing).

Hi,

I’m trying to set up a systemd service to restart cbatticon (https://github.com/valr/cbatticon) after resume from suspend to disk/ram. Apparently I fail to equip the service with the information necessary to make the cbatticon icon appear in my system tray (I’m running Debian stable with fluxbox). I’ve set DISPLAY and XAUTHORITY in the unit file to no avail. Has anyone an idea what I’m missing? I’m quite sure that the script (see below) is executed from beginning to end. However, it has no effect when it’s run by systemd. If I execute it manually in a terminal it works as expected.

Here’s the unit file:
[Unit]
Description=Run /home/USER/bin/cbatticon-restart after resume
After=suspend.target
After=hibernate.target

[Service]
Type=simple
User=USER
Environment="DISPLAY=:0"
Environment="XAUTHORITY=/home/USER/.Xauthority"
ExecStart=/home/USER/bin/cbatticon-restart

[Install]
WantedBy=suspend.target
WantedBy=hibernate.target

And here’s the respective bash script:
#! /bin/bash

if [[ -n `pidof cbatticon` ]]
then
PId=$(pidof cbatticon) &&
kill "${PId}"
fi

cbatticon -u 5 -l 20 -r 10 -c "systemctl suspend" &

exit

Thanks a bunch!

I usually just abuse xargs for doing things in parallel. Example:

$ seq 10

2
3
4
5
6
7
8
9
10
$ seq 10 | xargs -P 5 -n 1
5
4
2
3
1
7
8
6
9
10

-P defines the number of processes to start, 0 means as much processes as possible.

I was just getting this error last night while installing another distro that doesn't automatically format the drives.

The problem was that GRUB needed a 2MB partition with the "bios_grub" flag enabled. (Usually this is the first partition on the disk but I'm not sure if it's required).
Also I set the "boot" flag, but I'm not sure if that's required (the boot flag should be set on whichever partition holds the /boot directory, so possibly your root partition unless you have /boot somewhere else)

Devuan sounds interesting.

How quick are they with keeping up with security patches of Debian stable?

If it's a fork of debian, couldn't you just use the non-free repos of debian? I doubt that firmware packages have any kind of dependency that could ruin your installation

also, what init does devuan use? I'm browsing the site, but it's full of HURR DURR init freedom but doesn't actually state what is uses? openrc?

>>
>>57500980

I'm using cbatticon too and don't need a systemd service to make it work after suspending.
My guess is that you confused some of the After and WantedBy options. What does the log file say? I'm also guessing that it's trying to start before X is up. Try creating an X.target and start that with Fluxbox and then make cbatticon's service file start after that.
>>
>>57502872
sysvinit is also supported on vanilla debian at least for now, as long as you're willing to roll with systemd-udev. it works pretty well and it's much less likely to die or disappear next week
>>
>>57502870
Sure thing buddy.

The directory you should be interested in is
/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0

The two files of interests are brightness and max_brightness

Brighntess levels can be integers from 0 to whataver "cat max_brightness" prints, in my case it's 7 but It can be different for your machine.

To change the level of brightness you need to write your desired level (as an integer) to the file called brightness.

To dim the brightness just use
echo "0" > brightness

Replace "0" with desired level

Of course everything has to be done with superuser priviledges.

The shell runs redirections and the shell has no root privilegues. sudo echo will only run echo as root and stop here. If you want to write as superuser, there are thw ways:
a) start a shell with superuser privs

Why does the internet bully Lennard so much?

>I don't usually talk about this too much, and hence I figure that people are really not aware of this, but yes, the Open Source community is full of assholes, and I probably more than most others am one of their most favourite targets. I get hate mail for hacking on Open Source. People have started multiple "petitions" on petition web sites, asking me to stop working (google for it). Recently, people started collecting Bitcoins to hire a hitman for me (this really happened!). Just the other day, some idiot posted a "song" on youtube, a creepy work, filled with expletives about me and suggestions of violence. People post websites about boycotting my projects, containing pretty personal attacks. On IRC, people /msg me sometimes, with nasty messages, and references to artwork in 4chan style. And there's more. A lot more.

Premise: i'm extremely new to linux.

So today i decided to install qbittorrent and at first i was pretty excited. Everything worked out of the box, max speed, etc.

However here's the problem: everytime i close qbittorrent, it loses all data about downloads.

If the download had finished it's okay, because the file is safe inside /home/anon/Downloads but if the file was uncomplete, you can see the problem.

This also makes a lot harder to keep seeding once the download is complete.

I'm not even sure what the problem is, how do i fix it?

Hey friendlies, can someone please teach me about terminal ANSI colors please?

I use xfce-terminal and love it. I have picked a really nice color scheme from presets and haven't had any issues.

But recently I installed a program that looks like dogshit. Pic related. If you take a look at my terminal preferences, you can notice that this program uses bottom row of colors and doesn't use the top row. Unfortunately the program doesn't come with a config file and you can't modify colors. But there's source code!

I've narrowed down the issue to this:

static const unsigned long BASIC_COLOR_COUNT = 8;
static const unsigned long HI_COLOR_COUNT = 6 * 3 * 3;

....

int attrs_for_ident(const char *str, size_t len) const {
unsigned long index = crc32(1, (const Bytef*)str, len);
int retval;

if (COLORS >= 256) {
unsigned long offset = index % HI_COLOR_COUNT;
retval = COLOR_PAIR(VC_ANSI_END + offset);
}
else {
retval = BASIC_HL_PAIRS[index % BASIC_COLOR_COUNT];
}

return retval;
};

static inline int ansi_color_pair_index(int fg, int bg)
{
return VC_ANSI_START + ((fg * 8) + bg);
};

static inline int ansi_color_pair(int fg, int bg)
{
return COLOR_PAIR(ansi_color_pair_index(fg, bg));
};

I can't figure out this code. How do I change it so it uses first row of colors?
Thanks!

>>
>>57504157
The programs seems to check if the terminal supports 256 colors, if so, it's using it. The 256 colors palette has different colors than the colors you set up in your terminal.

A quick hack:

    int attrs_for_ident(const char *str, size_t len) const {
unsigned long index = crc32(1, (const Bytef*)str, len);
int retval;

// if (COLORS >= 256) {
// unsigned long offset = index % HI_COLOR_COUNT;
// retval = COLOR_PAIR(VC_ANSI_END + offset);
// }
// else {
retval = BASIC_HL_PAIRS[index % BASIC_COLOR_COUNT];
// }

return retval;
};

Or just set your terminal ENV variable to some terminal which doesn't support 256 colors.

Thanks bro! I just tried that. It actually looks a lot better but it still uses bottom row of terminal palette. That other anon above gave me a clue about bold stuff.

this->vc_role_colors[VCR_SKEWED_TIME] = ansi_color_pair(COLOR_YELLOW, COLOR_BLACK) | A_UNDERLINE;

this->vc_role_colors[VCR_WARN_STATUS] =
ansi_color_pair(COLOR_YELLOW, COLOR_WHITE) | A_BOLD;
this->vc_role_colors[VCR_ALERT_STATUS] =
ansi_color_pair(COLOR_RED, COLOR_WHITE);
this->vc_role_colors[VCR_ACTIVE_STATUS] =
ansi_color_pair(COLOR_GREEN, COLOR_WHITE);
this->vc_role_colors[VCR_ACTIVE_STATUS2] =
ansi_color_pair(COLOR_GREEN, COLOR_WHITE) | A_BOLD;
this->vc_role_colors[VCR_BOLD_STATUS] =
ansi_color_pair(COLOR_BLACK, COLOR_WHITE) | A_BOLD;
this->vc_role_colors[VCR_VIEW_STATUS] =
ansi_color_pair(COLOR_WHITE, COLOR_BLUE);

Any suggestions? Maybe removing " | A_BOLD"?

protip: playonlinux is basically a crapend for wine, so look at WINEHQ's website. There you can get lots of infos like does the game run? what works? what do I have to do to make it work? etc.

That said. Proprietary programs belong into a Windows VM.

Gentoo is a meme, used by 4channers who have never installed it. It means "lurk moar" in /g/'s language, implying that installing Gentoo turns you into a GNU/Linux wizard, which it doesn't, since it's actually easy to install, it just takes ages to compile and here's the trolle.

There's literally no point in installing Gentoo, since nearly all common package managers can build custom packages for their related system.
>>
>>57506306
the point of gentoo is being source based, which means: no random binaries, just your source
>>
>>57506327
The missing point is: Nobody will ever actually read the source before compiling it, so why not just use the binary and save time.
>>
>>57506327
The point of Gentoo is USE flags, which makes it possible to update your packages with the set flags. On other distros you need to update and recompile every time if you have a custom package.
>>
>>57506359
Why should anyone compile literally all packages of his distro just because of said convenience? Let's say you install Gentoo and you have a custom urxvt and a custom ncmpcpp. It's not like that packages get updates everyday, so why not just rebuild that one or two custom packages you actually customize? Why loosing years for compiling stuff you don't even care about? For example Firefox will take, depending on cores, between 12 and 3 hours of compiling for every update. Literally why?

I have a low opinion on Gentoo GNU/Linux.
>>
>>57506408
For the home users things like gentoo are more of a hobby. But in a commercial environment the 5% or more performance boosts you can get end up being substantial in terms of money/time saved.

Besides if you have all your settings in place and leave it to update/compile when you aren't using it, then what is the problem?
>>
>>57506408
I use Gentoo because I'm a speed freak - I can't stand the thought that some of my packages might not be running as fast as they could be.
>>
>>57506408
Despite being considered a "bleeding edge" distro with rolling releases, Gentoo is actually one of the most stable distros you'll ever find because everything is compiled against the versions of libraries you actually have installed, instead of against versions of libraries you're supposed to have like in binary based distros.

This is strange.

>Running Debian on my laptop
>At system startup, it shows an error message that I've looked into basically just saying that the Bluetooth chip on the laptop is returning bad information

>Running Fedora on this same laptop
>Shows the same message during startup

>Running Kubuntu on this same laptop
>NO SUCH ERROR MESSAGE AT ALL!

Also...
>the touchpad functioned perfectly on both Debian and Fedora with no tweaks
>the touchpad didn't work at all on a fresh installation of Kubuntu and I had to run a command that I retrieved off of the internet to get it working

How can Linux distributions vary in this way? Shouldn't it all be the same? I've always imagined that the only difference in distributions are the packages that they come bundled with (their choice of desktop environment and package manager, mainly)

Since it's hardware it could be the Kernel. The Linux kernel can be compiled with or without support for various things. Each distro might do it differently.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

why do you have to do this to me every time?

I'm using Antergos with Xfce and I'm experiencing a weird problem. Sometimes certain programs become unusable because they take on the appearance of whatever is on the screen. Pic related. The part circled in black is a chromium window. It's back to normal after a reboot but this has happened multiple times. The programs that I mainly use that seem to be affected are chromium and mpv. I'm using a laptop with intel hd 3000 graphics. Any ideas what the problem is?

mint isn't 'bullied' because it's easy. it's just TOTAL shit when it comes to security and the developer is pretty shit himself.
use ubuntu(without *nity) instead if you want something easy and not that shitty
