Is gaming not a thing on linux simple because most devs don't cater to it? I mean, as far as drivers, proprietary stuff like DX and hardware support goes, if games were made to run on linux would they generally run just as well as they do on windows?

How is AMDGPU/AMDGPU Pro on Linux? I've been running a 970 or more than a year, but I was eyeing for a better card + 120Hz 1440p monitor. Doing a sidegrade to a RX 480 is very silly, but I'm curious on how it fares to see what I could expect from Vega or Navi. For instance, can you plays your gaymes with no problems? How about emulation? Nvidia has the superior drivers, there's no doubt, but I'd still like to know some external sources outside phoronix for AMD.

New to Linux, settled (for now) on Mint KDE. What would make me want to switch to a distro like, say, Arch or Gentoo or their derivatives (Antergos, Manjaro, Funtoo, etc.)? Regarding Arch and Gentoo, what makes them worth the hassle? And as a side note, what's systemd and why do you people go crazy about it every now and again?

You get to do things manually which helps you learn

dmesg shows

Corrupted low memory at ffff88000000e000 (e000 phys) = 00084202

and I'm trying to use memmap to mark the effected memory as reserved but I'm not entirely sure how.

From my last boot I got

Corrupted low memory at ffff88000000e000 (e000 phys) = 00084202

Are those within the first 64K? I did Memtest86+ and it returned no errors.

What are ffff880000001000, 1000 phys and 00067fb1 and how do they relate to one another? Judging from examples I've seen the eight digit number is the one I need to use, right?

I feel like I'm in over my head.

How can I run i3 as wm in KDE?
>>

wat
>>
>>57495813
i made it :)

there was this awesome tutorial for awesome wm :)
http :// awesome.naquadah.org/wiki/KDE_and_awesome

which wasn't working for i3wm, but changing the Type from "Xsession" to "Application" it worked:
so :
to have i3wm working with kde4
you should already have this folder in your system :
/usr/share/kde4/apps/ksmserver/windowmanagers/
(if not maybe this solution doesn't work for you )
create a file named
/usr/share/kde4/apps/ksmserver/windowmanagers/i3.desktop

with content :

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=i3
Comment=Highly configurable framework window manager
Type=Application
Exec=i3
TryExec=i3

and :
Now, you should be able to choose "i3" as window manager in System Settings-Default Applications->Window Manager

I've seen a lot of shilling for Arch and Gentoo on this board. What's the major difference? From what I can gather, Gentoo is harder to install and compiles everything from source, while Arch has better repos. I was already considering switching to one of them, so what makes Arch better than Gentoo? And what about derivative distros, like Manjaro and Antergos?

That's what people believe, but actually
a) packages are at least twice as large as on other distros because there's no package splitting
b) you can customize literally every distro; it's not some arch only average
c) everything you learn is how to partition a drive and create a filesystem, that's not really "a lot"

don't believe the memes

I try to add my user to the sudo group with
>~$ sudo adduser anon sudo

Same result. What do? I just want to install something.

When you install Debian, you either set a root password or sudo. You obviously made the wrong choice, now look into visudo and add yourself.

For a few annoying reasons grub is installed on a SD card which then points to the SSD for my ubuntu installation.

Every time there is an update for grub it fucks my installation. What's the easiest way to repair grub and just point it to my SSD again?

That wount work since you have no sudo account.
Use visudo.

Next time set a user password during install, not a root password, and sudo will be set up automatically.

What is a better choice of distro that run from RAM?
Slax or puppy?
Will use it mostly to create VN with Ren'py.
So python and JRE are requirment.

Why is latex so popular?
It has a ridiculous install size
Doesn't sensibly seperate stderr from stdout
Have to use latexmk instead of make because of inane compilation like running the same program twice
Terrible documentation

Why on earth does anyone put themselves through this? troff is so much better, hell even groff is better and it comes installed already

why does geany fail at the compilation and execution of my pascal document ? any solution ?

>>57496212

Install it on your SSD. Then generate a new config file.
>>
>>57496581
Can't. My ssd is attached to a sata port intended for a cd drive therefore it won't boot from it.
>>
>>57496694

Why don't you just change the boot settings/priorities in your BIOS/UEFI?

It's not possible to boot from that SATA port.

I'll have to give up Apricity/Arch, it's not for me.
It's less noob friendly and Pacman is sitting for more than 30 minutes installing Vivaldi.

Serves you right for trying to install a proprietary browser.
