Still good for FOSS, filesharing and personal communication to your friends that you know and aren't tech illiterate
>>
I use it daily to talk to people who are into the same podcast I'm into. I'm connected to #thedickshow on freenode literally 24/7.

Every now and then I check out some other IRC channels but they're basically old private clubs at this point and have toxic communities.
>>
>>57380122
What bouncer do you use. Does it bounce dcc?
>>
It's all about Discord now, really
>>
>>57380122

freenode is laggy as fuck here
also how can I get a vhost on freenode
rizon is easy af

No seriously, what are some good active channels? I ask this at least once a week and nobody answers me. Is IRC dead or is it muh secret club syndrome?
>>
>>57380711
IRC is alive and well. /g/ has a few channels on both Freenode and Rizon, look aound the various generals for more information.
>>
>>57380711
You can't just join random channels, find a channel that's active within a specific community. I'm on plenty of channels with former study buddies and also for some various hackerspaces I'm part of.

social IRC is pretty much dead
>>
I'm pretty tech illiterate but I hang around these parts.

So I wanted to join some channel related to this but then I realized I wouldn't have many friends. 10 years ago I visited channels related to consoles, emulation and the only linux related channel on the network I was had many elitists that only accepted me because I didn't ask too many questions.

Man, being taught how to install debian back then was a nice thing. Spending 3 or 4 days getting everything working was such a waste of time, yet I want that back.

Nowadays I can't really find anything. I see all these fucking networks and no friendly discussion.
>>
People use IRC? or is it just teens trying to be unique? back in the days we used to hijack peoples IRC to run a botnet

IRC channels are just huge circlejerks. you have to be part of the muh sekrit klub, otherwise everyone will just ignore you.

I don't get why everyone is saying it's sekrit klub stuff. Some channel OPs try to make it that way, but in general it's not.
Join some channels, wait ten minutes, say a polite hello with capitalisation and punctuation, and you'll be fine.
Have a name without the word penis with it, have a fun vhost, etc.

But it is true, the worst part about IRC is channel OPs.

Everyone at irc.tripsit.me #drugs are friendly and almost always talking. Especially during the time when american people are not sleeping.

IRC channels are a reasonable alternative to stackoverflow, people have more RTFM-oriented attitude, it's really appreciated to show up with your homework done. I think it's because answering the question won't give anyone measurable reputation like upvotes. Also, many users are oldboys who learned only from manuals and can't stand people who think someone else is gonna do their work for them.
>>
>>57381567
To be completely fair it's not always full north korea circlejerk mode as some people make it look like, it's usually just as circlejerky as any group of people who congregate regularly: either you know everybody there, all the in jokes and is almost always there contributing to the chatter or you are just a passing acquaintance nobody cares much about.
>>
>>57380943
Because if you dont know shit then its a waste of time to discuss anything with you.
>>
>>57380711
Ubuntu and Linux on freeride are pretty lively if you want to help other people with shit. Also all pretty nice.

>Disagree with channel OP
>Kicked for trolling

Channel OPs are the worst sometimes. I've seen IRC OPs on EFNet that are like that too. They seem to think they're right on every single topic because they can kick you.
>>
>>57380711
Get on rizon and open look at the top 10 channels. Jump around between them until you click with a group of people.
It's also important to note that while most chans were made and named after a specific hobby/topic, they are pretty much just general chat rooms for the users.
One of the ricing chans I sit in a little bit has a few people who don't know anything about Android ricing, but they still are active members.
>>
>>57381913
I think if IRC was redesigned to be more like usenet, in that people use ignore/kill lists instead of OPs banning people, IRC would be so much better.
>>
>>57380059
Use it for sekrit club account because otherwise can't download my mango

IRC is a good backend for chat applications. Twitch uses IRC which makes their chat API well established and well documented, so there are a lot of web applications you can create for them as well as bots.

The best way to become a quick (m/b)illionaire in tech is to make a chat application. ICQ was sold to AOL in the 90s for around $500m. Microsoft bought Skype for $9b, and Facebook bought whatsapp for $20b (and they had less than 50 employees at the time, meaning that each employee was valuated at around $400m).

Want to be successful? Find a niche market and make a wrapper around an IRC server, like Twitch (videogames) or slack (programming, but no longer uses IRC backend) or something. Then spend a ton of money on marketing, which will make tech giants like facebook or google or MS nervous that you're going to disrupt their market (like snapchat did). Then, simply weigh your offers and sell to the highest bidder. Then retire comfortably and trumppost on twitter like Notch does

>>
>>57380059
Extremely comfy, can use it through your terminal (this is actually more comfy than hexchat et al.), zero bloat, it's still where the cool people hang, basically no nazi ops if you hang in non-cancerous channels, one of the best ways to speak to a developer of a given project, nice channels to pirate your asian manchild cartoons and ebooks, opers don't give a fuck what you're doing unless you're spambotting or sharing CP, and it keeps itself normie free because there is basically no normie-friendly interface for it.

>>57380288
You go to some chan, I think #freenode, and ask for one.
