IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

First for still no tablet

Is $360 ($360 + $70 actually) ok for a relatively new-looking X230 with mediocre specs (i5, hdd, 4 GB ram)?

Also, any word on Fujitsu Lifebooks?
>>
I recently had to replace my laptop for uni (old HP brick was about to melt) and went for a used X220 for €170 on Amazon.

I have never been happier to have been meme'd in my life. This shit is seriously one of the best purchases I've ever made.

>>57245510
That 's quite expensive. You should be able to find some for $100 less without too much hassle. Also an X220 is inferior in the integrated GPU, but the keyboard is leagues better and it costs less.
>>
>>57245547
Sorry, I meant X230T, not just X230

I'm checking local offers mostly and not ebay because I live outside US and refund won't be an option

>>
>>57245547
Glad you like it, Yuropanon.

My T410 is one of three purchases in my life which I have not regretted to some degree, the other two being my Toyota Camry and a Seiko Alpinist. Generally I am at least somewhat unsatisfied with the things I buy (including my university degree), so if I get something I'm completely happy with, it must be damn good.

I hope the Retro Thinkpad that I buy to replace my T410 also falls into the "no regrets" category. But somehow I feel Lenovo will fuck something up, if they produce it at all.

the keyboard on the 2x30 is still one of the best keyboards. Not as good as previous ones though. The big thing is that the hd4000 graphics on the x230 is worth it. There's definitely a difference.

The X220 keys are very slightly closer together than the T420's, but it doesn't make any difference to compatibility.

T430 if you want light gaymen with the better iGPU, T420 if you don't.

Specs difference is only a newer CPU and better GPU.

>>57253851
>whats wrong with the t430 keyboard?
ftfy and pic related, top is T430 and bottom is T420, the T430 layout is dicks.

>is it fixable?
Yes if you buy a new t420 keyboard to mod a t430 and then flash the firmware.
>>
Why not but anything other than those series? I've had a x220 for the last 18 months, it always overheated for no reason, the display was meh, and today I couldn't turn it on because the fan was not working (got the infamous message)

Why is something like Thinkpad 13 bad?
>>

Please just don't let it not turn out to be some circlejerk about the "classic" aesthetics; yes I love the full one piece keyboard and yes I love its sturdy look compared to the gay slim looking ultrabooks but come on
>>
How much more weight does a 9-volt pack onto a thinkpad?

I'm thinking about getting an x220 for portability but if the 9 volt is heavy or too weirdly shaped I might just stick with a 6 volt
>>
>>57254438
It's a fair bit heavier, but the shape of it makes for a really comfy grip compared to the 6-cell. Well worth it for the increased battery life.
>>
>>57254438
I'm the poster above you. It's A LOT heavier than a 6 cell, but like the guy below you said, it makes up by the fact that you can grab it easily (it sounds stupid but after a while you realize it's pretty nice)
>>

Does anyone think that /g/ is mostly comprised of manlets due to the sheer amount of people using the X220?
>>
Is the T60p a bad choice? I don't care for a great gpu, I just want something to replace my dell inspiron 1525
>>
is the x230 a decent upgrade over a x220? Is it worth going specifically after one?
>>
>>57254977

Do you need to be a manlet to use a smaller laptop? Personally I've never heard any complaints of the keyboard being too small for anyone, regardless of height. However, my sample size might be fairly low compared to others.
>>
>>57255145
X230 is not worth the upgrade if you currently have an X220, if you had X201 maybe if you had money to blow

if it's your first thinkpad and you're not short on cash, go for x230!

High friction, and you feel like your hand is catching against keys. Key footprint is also inevitably smaller, and you can feel the tips of your fingers touching the frame between the keys as you type. Literally hipster garbage that is "in" right now thanks to fucking MacBooks.

I also think beveled keyboards just look better but I admit that's my opinion.

Mr friendo said there were 2 4gb dimms on this laptop so i was very surprised to find one stick of 4gb and an m pcie port staring me in the face.
I think this is a change for the better in the series, 4gb minimum should be on board, and access to a potential msata ssd input should be easy to make. Cmos battery os also easier to access than x200/x201/220 etc

Price seems good but its not the i7 version, and just after buying this i saw an offer on trademe for an i7 t430 for 330 nzd but im happy with this.
Another thing that interests me about the t430 is how they've lumped in the usb3's and mini DP with the 2.5" hdd space, the cover for this is definitely a lot sturdier than any of the x series' port covers and the cover for the t400. Additionally having them not lump another card reader on the underside of the usbs means that if one of them.breaks its significantly easier to replace/remove that usb.

Should I sell my gaming pic I built the February before last and buy a thinkpad? I find myself playing less games and the time I do spend on them feels like a distraction and waste of time. My only worry is the loss of money and missing having it. Plus I don't feel like there is any real justification to selling the machine when it's a perfectly alright computer with a lot of life left in it. I'd just like to downsize.

T420s has a soldered cpu, the T420 cpu is replaceable.

And yeah they come with dual cores up to the i7 2640m but an aftermarket quad core cpu can be installed.

Of course it generates more heat but it's still tolerable and an upgrade if you only have iGPU, if you have the Nvidia dGPU it would be a housefire since it shares the heatsink with the CPU from what i understand.

Screws missing, cracks on the right hand side of the case between the hdd cover and the top of the side, its a weak bit of plastic. Also the lid has a strip of plastic that is known to crack and break off, if youre able to wiggle this and make a divide between the strip and the rest of the lid its a bad sign, worse still if it comes off.
Get to recognise what the stickers on a genuine 4 and 6 cell lenovo battery look like compared to their chink oem counterparts. The chink oems are really shit and worth less than half the originals.
Apart from that boot up open dxdiag check the hdd ram and cpu are what the seller said they were.

I kind of need a terminal station since I'll be abroad for a couple of months.
Essentially just means something portable with a decent keyboard, acceptable battery life and around 13" so it's neither too large nor do you get eye strain from looking at tiny symbols too long.
Power doesn't need to be that spectacular since I'm just going to run everything that needs actual processing power on the cluster.

Would you recommend the X220 for that? Found one for $220 that is supposedly in almost new condition (and I have the option to send it back if that turns out to be false).

I've found that lower clocked i7 quadcores tend to get pretty good battery life.

If you want a Free as in Freedom machine, then yes, there's no libreboot without propietary blobs for the ATi models
The drivers are kind of awful on Windows for those old ATi's, and they aren't officially supported past Vista, but you can get Windows Update drivers for Win7 x64 and x32
There's modded drivers that will work up to Win10 (the WU 7 drivers or the Vista drivers with some hacks will work too), the performance is kind of shitty but it should be better than the shitfest a GMA950 is
In *nix I don't really know the quality of the open source radeon drivers on this old chips, but I expect it to be quite better than Windows
Though you will have less problems with a T60 without discrete GPU, the GMA950 is still supported on Windows 10 ootb, and is supported by any *nix
Those Inspiron's where shit but a maxed out T60p won't be really better, the C2D's are showing their age with the meme websites nowadays, get at least a T400 or something better

low battery warning perhaps?
>>
>>57277576
Thats the low battery warning. My X61t did that to me last week.

Whats the difference between 55++ and 70++ 9 cell batteries for t420?

So i've just picked up my x220.

A few questions:

1. Is there anywhere cheaper than lenovo themselves to buy the genuine battery in australia (amazon+shipping is like 200 ausbucks for the 9 cell).
2. My indicator lights don't work on the inside and outside (sleep, wifi etc). Is this a common issue/ an easy fix?
3. The power button - is it supposed to feel like nothing when you press it? It almost feels like it's been pushed in too far.
>>
>>57278277
Nothing. 70 batteries are just for the DRM on the T/W*30 models. They work just fine on a T420.
>>
>>57278596
1: look for official service points.
2: time to replace the inverter
3: it should feel like a rubber dome button.

That's a W520. :/

Does anybody use an ExpressCard in their laptop? I've got a 54mm slot and they're cheap but I was wondering if they do anything other than USB ports that might be useful.
>>

what temps anon? I'm running x220 at 47~50 does it run cooler?

this

TN is a piece of shit on pretty much all lenovos, the difference with the IPS panel is huge.

I use my external GPU every day.

x220 brand new 9 h
t420 brand new 12+ h

real life time tho is
x220 - 4-6 h
t420 - 4 - 5 h
>>
How does t420 work with 8.1?
>>
>x220 i5 @ 2.6 ghz

Is 42 - 55 C normal running temp ?
Using ubuntu 16, running ~20 or so tabs in chromium, mostly chans, one youtube and wikipedia etc. terminal VIM and file browser.
While not using the chromium and just do offline stuff the temp goes to 35-38.

Is this normal or should I reapply the thermal paste soon ?

Finally got my egpu (gtx 750ti 2gb) working

Going from 30 fps on low to 60 fps on high is glorious
>>
>>57282113
Go straight to windows 10

Windows 8.1 is not good
>>
My x220 came with a 90w adapter. Is it safe to use for charging the battery? Isn't the adapter 65w normally?
>>
>>57282416
>Finally
What was the issue and how did you solve it?

From my experience setting up an eGPU was pretty easy, only plug cables and install the driver.
>>
>>57282600
Legit thinkpad batteries have regulated protections boards on them, which means they only charge with set amout of power, decided by the battery itself.
If you got some offbrand chink battery without any protection, then it might be a problem.
>>
>>57282842
How can I check that?
>>
>>57282842
just because the adapter can give more power does not mean it does that if the device does not need it...
>>
>>57282113
like shit, install gentoo instead

I hardly ever get responses, not sure what I'm doing wrong but I'm looking for some purchase advice what can I get that is:

- Post 2010
- Can take my SSD and extra RAM
- Around €300 refurbished
- Build quality of an elitebook
- Preferably around 13" (14" is okay)

I was thinking getting an 8570p but most that I can find have shitty 1449x768 resolution, they're like €300 in my country (the i5 model)
>>
>>57283251
Meant to say 8470p which is the 14" variant
>>
>>57282669
First off, the graphics card didnt even show up at first, so I had to uninstall the driver and download an older version. After doing that the graphics card finally showed up on device manager

Since I had more than 4gb of ram I then got the error 12 code. I first put just 2gb and it worked but 2gb for games is utter shit so I looked for another solution.

I had to get diy gpu setup 1.30 and then started trying all sorts of compactions to no avail, so I contacted nando, the guy who made it and I asked him questions for 2 days until he finally nailed a solution

Works great, setup was a bitch though

How can I put itback to the place it belongs? Model is t420
>>
>>57253496
How do you like it? Might get one just to have the 3.0 compatibility.
Also, are there any ultrabay blu-ray drives? I was looking around, but couldn't find anything.
I guess they would be expensive, but fucking neat.

Yeah I know, but it served me for 4 years until I built my gaymen PC. Just recently got a T420 for school, and holy shit is it comfy.

>>
>>57283737
>triple drive

Huuuuh?
>>
>>57283917
... yes
they're like 30% slower than the latest processors.
the only thing they aren't good at is battery life, heat, and integrated graphics.
>>57283685
not him, but I hate those things
They use a lot of power for seemingly no reason
Some of them cause a shit load of system interrupts and makes my system laggy
and you can't boot off them (pretty much the main need for usb 3)
>>
>>57277687
I only buy refurbished.
>>
>>57281951

Only if you watch videos all the time/ a stream.
I can easily get 6-8 hours of constant browsing out of it.
>>
>>57283251
You probably don't get any replies because the majority of people here only care for Thinkpads.
That being said, you can easily get an X220 for that price, refurbished, but it only comes with 1366x768 resolution.

Weird. This never happened to me and i run 16gb, as i said earlier everything was plug and play with the exp gdc adapter.

Well at least you got it working, neat.

>>57283917
As a reference an i7 2720qm is only ~37% slower than the latest 6770hq so an i5 is more than viable.

no idea how good boy points converts to USD, but $170 USD is really good for an x220 with an ssd (normally you can only get one with a hard drive for that much)
Just make sure you get a new battery because that 6 cell will probably be painful
>>
>>57284722
$170 = £139.45 not to bad. It,s the cheapest I could find. Ty for the battery tip.

1tb SSD ~$60
1tb SSD $250+

that display is only good in a dark room.

What's better:
>SSD in bay and HDD in main HDD slot
or
>HDD in bay and SSD in the main slot?
I have this cheap ass caddy from my prev. laptop, and had issues there (HDD ran only in SATA I in the caddy)
>>
>>57285407
I have SSD in both, but I say it being on the main slot is better since they might have reduced costs by making the drive slot slower (sata 2 instead of 3)
>>
>>57283495
I had this problem, get a very thin screwdriver and try to put the spring back with it, it isn't that hard to do.
>>
>>57285440
Speccy identified the bay slot as SATA III
>>
>>57285407
ssd in the hard drive bay since that's full 6gbit
hdd in the trash

>>
>>57285407
SSD in msata slot and HDD in slot1 and slot2, or slot1 if you have a x220.

You won't notice difference in daily usage between SATA2 and SATA3.
>>
>>57285463
Then any of them should be fine

Or if you were asking for better lifespan because you move your laptop alot I'd go with one nearest to center
