Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

X60s reporting in

I own a Thinkpad T520 laptop running windows 7.

There is some setting which keeps auto-adjusting my brightness levels to the colors on the screen. I thought this was a problem with Intel Control Center so I checked it, but strangely enough auto brightness wasnt an option in the program. So I uninstalled Intel Control Center, but the brightness keeps changing.

Does anyone have any idea why this keeps happening? I imagine that it is probably the result of some bloatware program on this PC.

Thinking about getting an mSATA SSD for my x220t. Do you think it'll be a big deal that it's running SATAII instead of SATAIII? I'll mostly be using it for reading shit, drawing, and PowerPoint presentations on Windows 7. I can't imagine it'll matter much since I'm not doing anything data-heavy on it.

It's not noticeable in daily usage unless you transfer big files regularly.

Buy a X220 or X230.

Or just put a SATA SSD in the place of the HDD.

Does anybody use this year's Precisions ? My 3510 has picked up a really irritating issue that i can't figure out. When i shut the laptop down, whether it be by pressing the power button, or clicking shutdown in windows, the laptop will not turn off 80% of the time. The windows session closes and the screen powers off, but at the point of sudden hdd activity where any laptop should normally power off, this one just hangs indefinitely with the hdd activity and power LED's solid on, the backlight on the keyboard even still works and fades out and stuff. The only thing i can do is hold the power button when it does this, but that adds like 10 secs to boot time when i turn it back on. I have hibernation disabled, its running on an SSD so that shouldn't be an issue anyway, it has the latest BIOS version and the battery charges and dischares just fine. There are few and far between people on google who report a similar issue with precisions and windows 10, but nobody seems to have a proper answer. Any Ideas ?

Do not waste money on an Ideapad. They are junk.....it will bring you nothing but heartache. If you are looking to buy a Lenovo, you should be thinking about buying a nice used x200 or x201(if you are looking for something small, light and portable with good durability).

If you are looking for a slightly bigger display, you want to be going for a T400 or T420.

Those are the Business Class Thinkpads. It depends on what you want to use the Thinkpad for. My Thinkpad is a X60s(which is ancient and I only paid ÂŁ60 for it). It is a very high quality machine.

Although it is obsolete compared to new Laptops in terms of speed, I am bothered......the build quality of it is amazing. I am not sure how old the battery is in mine but I get 3 hours use from it running my display at the highest brightness setting, the wifi and bluetooth enabled and I generally listen to music with it when I am either browsing/posting here on /g/ and on /vr/ or I am working on either programming or writing using my text editor.

It also doesn't run hot either......

I have an Advent Roma Laptop that was given to me......

That Laptop was made in 2010......it runs hot enough to cook your dinner on and if it is running on using the battery.....it holds it charge for about 45 minutes to an hour at most.
>>
>>57223247

They are total garbage.....my sister is looking to buy one of them........bare in mind she is a dumbshit student......

I told her they are shit......she thinks it is worth ÂŁ280 with a i3, 8 gig of Ram and a 1TB h/drive. Oh.....and no Nvidia Graphics.....just Intel garbage. That is with a student discount.....

An i3 new in 2016???? An i3 is not much better than a Core 2 Duo.

Hey engi fags.

Any of you have a newer ThinkPad with integrated graphics (xx50,xx60, x1 carbon even)? How does it fair with cad software?

I don't really want to buy a workstation (i already have a pretty solid desktop), but I do admit that my x220 leaves a lot to be desired in that regard. I wouldn't mind something with a little more power.
>>
>>57224426
>newer Thinkpads
Older thinkpads are more than enough for CAD work. HD3000 or HD4000 do a fine work.

Want more performance? Add more RAM, or an SSD to quickly open all those CAD objects.

Why isn't your X220 not good?

Well I'm still tweaking things a bit, I don't use it very often. But I already have pretty poor performance with Windows 7 just in general. (I usually use Linux on it as just a general study programming PC) but I think it is more the CPU being weak. A lot of things in solidworks are kinda sluggish feeling. (IE whenever you click a part, it takes time to highlight the whole thing) I'm also kinda wanting a computer with a little better battery life (x250) so I was just curious if I would see any more sleek performances when it comes to my smaller projects or not.

I apologize for asking to be spoonfed but I'm wondering what your guys take on what kind of ram I should get for a x220 I just came into. I have no real idea on what's a good option other than the fact that the first one can use both 1.35 v 1.5 volts so I could possible save some battery life with it, other than that I have no clue.

I've got three options here and I'm not sure what to pick.

It is, i dont need the nvidia graphics otherwise for anything else but it works nicely under windows

forgot to mention that my model is indeed the T420s one not T420, if it makes any difference, but i found this

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Lenovo_ThinkPad_T420s

says this:

>It seems that the digital video ports (DVI or DisplayPort) only connected to the NVIDIA-card (Only if you have one, of course, see ThinkWiki - Switchable Graphics and Docks). So you can't use a monitor via DisplayPort/DVI with the integrated graphics card (Intel). You can solve this problem by switching completly to the NVIDIA card in the BIOS settings, but this uses more battery power. A better solution is to activate the NVIDIA-Card only when you connected to an external monitor.

I guess i have to see at some point that can i get it to work under Debian somehow then

Hey guys I am saving up to get either a X220(or 230) or a T420. My question is guys which verson do you think works better for the FHD screen mod? Ive seen online where people do the mod, but which one is easier?

Never thought I'd post here, but getting a refurb business laptop might actually fit my situation
Any advice?

So my 8540w is probably dead without repair (5-6yo, thermal problems, motherboard problems, probably water damage).
Thing is I got 16GB RAM and a 256GB SSD for it like a year ago.

Looking for:
- Something smaller and lighter than 8540w (preferably 13.3"/14" and <2kg)
- >2013
- Similar CPU, don't care much about GPU
- Same build quality (no plastic under the palms)
- I can swap my SSD (preferably also HDD) and RAM in there

I was thinking an 8460p (the i7 version) which are around €250 refurbished, any thinkpad ideas?

price premium isn't worth the ~10% bump in cpu desu
just look at the recently sold listings:
$150 for a x201s with spots on screen and missing key.
$250+ for a functioning unit. f that noise.

you can swap lids between x200/x201/x200s/x201s; google x200s lid swap

and btw, not sure what higher max ram you're referring to:

x200/x200s support 8gb unofficially (requires dual rank 2x4gb dimms*)
x201/x201s support 8gb officially

* look at the number of chips on the 4gb dimm: if 8 chips on each side, it's dual rank/2rx8/low-density
if 4 chips on each side, it's single rank/1rx8/high-density

I'm in the market for a new laptop. I'm looking at the T460 or the T460p. I want something that will last me at least 3-4 years.

Is a Thinkpad the way to go or should I look into another brand? There's so many options and they all 'sound good'.

I'm not even sure of the differences between the T460 and the T460p. Which one has a more robust build? I hate it when laptops feel cheap and plastic.
>>

16GB is overkill for a T420 imho. Unless you do really heavy video and photo editing, I would go 8GB
>>
>>57230131
even a T430 would still last you at least 3 years, Thinkpads in general will last forever, the newer shit less so than the classics but still good.
Also look into Elitebooks.
>>
Does anyone have problem with charging? My x220 won't change and beeps periodically when connected to ac unless I reboot.

>Also look into Elitebooks.
The laptop I currently have is an Elitebook, and I've had it since 2009. Debian + XFCE and it runs OK, but I think it is time for an upgrade.

If I'm buying a new laptop now, I'd rather not get something already a couple of years old.

The T460p configured the way I want is $1,049.99 on the Lenovo website (i5, nvidia graphics, 8G of RAM, 1080p IPS screen, 72Wh battery). Seeing how I paid $1400 for my current Elitebook in 2009 I think that's a good deal.
>>

Do you have the AFFS/Flexview screen on it?
If so then it's worth it in my opinion to install a T61 mobo on it for 64 bit even faster CPU, bigger RAM cap (8 GB) and SATA 2 speeds (with Middleton's BIOS).

You should ask yourself what you are looking for in a computer that your Elitebook does not currently offer. Because honestly, I don't find that the Thinkpads of 2016 do anything appreciably better than their 2008-2009 counterparts. In fact they are sometimes worse.

8 gb should suffice unless you are going to do very intensive shit.

Can't be 1GB, it was advertised as 4GB. I'll just return it if that's the case. Gonna find out soon from Windows.

Thanks for the tips, I'll try Crucial for the first time I guess. Any point of going 16GB? I think it supports up to 8. Just asking, don't even need it.

I'm just comparing the serial numbers, pls no bully.

>Any point of going 16GB?
memes and yes it supports 16, I'm posting from a t420 with 16gb and 3 drives right now.
>>
>>57237998
It supports up to 16, but you dont really need that unless you are going to be using shit like cad.
Just get 8 for general purpose (even 4 would suffice, but better safe than sorry besides, shits CHEAP)

My T530 came with an empty Expresscard slot. What kind of fun stuff can I put there? And is there a place to buy placeholder cards for the slot? It's empty now and I'm worried it'll serve as an ingress port for dust and debris.
>>
>>57238106
usb3.0 ports
external gpu setup
wlan
expresscard ssds are a thing too but rare
>>
>>57238119
Neat. A few more usb ports certainly won't hurt. Thanks for the suggestions!
>>
>>57237998

Go for the 16gb. I do Lightroom and Photoshop and even with layers stacked and multiple image editing programs my W7E install uses at max 10gb.

I had a 4gb kit in it originally and it would go to scratch disks after a while. With the 16gb kit I can run W7E and all my shit almost exclusively off the RAM. It's not a noticeable difference until you have a bunch programs open, with the 16gb kit the machine won't bog down.

It might be a meme but with memory prices as cheap as they are (I remember when a 1gb kit was 350 dollars)

Just picked up an x220 off of ebay and I'm really liking it. It's a nice upgrade from my x200 which was starting to show its age. Any reccomendations as to what I should put in the express card slot? I was thinking of usb3 but I'm not entirely sure what all my options are.
>>
>>57238463
From personal experience its better to get a proper thinkpad pen, or at least a proper thinkpad pen nib, than a chink knockoff. The real ones slide smoother on the screen and don't scratch it so easily.
>>
>>57238758
an sd will be piss slow compared to any other drive it's able to hold and a real os would thrash the hell out of it. maybe keep an emergency install of puppy linux on it

help, t450 or x220?

I there are two at a reasonably cheap price in my area and I don't know what to buy.

If this helps, I plan to upgrade the screen in the future and I want it for programming and CAD design on the go.

help me decide fast.

Is the whole chassis that fragile, or is it just the corners?

Any suggested fixes(besides applying putty)?
>>
>>57239643
It's just that corner, I think. I've heard putting something in the Expresscard slot provides some increased stability, but can't attest to it personally.
>>
>>57239697
Oh ok, I am asking because some one is offering me that x220 for $140 and it's pretty much blemish-less only that corner ruins it, but I guess if it's only that corner I should go for it.

Not the regular X201, but the slim variant. It's got a 1440x900 screen, a low-voltage i7 that won't burn down the house, the keyboard is the older *60/*61/--00 style with full travel keys on the top row and better-feeling volume buttons, and you can remove the trackpad for the real patrician's Thinkpad experience. It's not as powerful or efficient as the X220, but the processor is sufficient for the simple things you'd be doing on a 12" laptop and the battery life isn't that much worse, I get seven hours on my 9cell compared to nine on the X220. The screen is also admittedly rather low-quality, not unlike the T420's, but having a usable resolution takes priority to me.

>>
>>57240391
X230's processor is about as fast as the X260's. Keep that one in mind. (they switched to ULV after the __30 gen, which were much slower and throttle themselves down a lot more)

Bought a 9 cell genuine lenovo battery but my x220 that I purchased was defective so I sat on the battery. Got a new one and the battery I kept holds no charge, it's been well over several months since I've had it in storage so I cant contact the seller. What do I do to fix it or am I fucked?

I think it had an i5 ultrabook ivy bridge cpu
luckily the thing had an ssd
I sold it to a random customer for $250

If the battery is in good health and the FHD display doesnt have a blue hue to it or vertical lines, probably is a decent deal for where you are at.

I personally bought one for $250 in the US, but had that shit display and K1000m. Sold it for $500 cash after 3 weeks.

2 many 2 list
The enthusiasts believe the 600E/X was the greatest built thinkpad of all time. It definately was pretty moddable too, much more sturdier than the T20 that followed.
I wish I was older to witness the heyday of the TP 600, the 600X was the second iteration of frankenpadding and modding with certain Pentium III CPUs and trying to max out ram past official maximums (Just like the X61 & T50, the 701c had an upgraded motherboard from a shop in Germany that modded an AMD K6 in place of its i386).

The best budget machine is probably the T420 because of mSATA support n such.

I fucked up too, I didn't get some ink in for a printer and I seemed to not get an 900p LCD to replace my T420s.

I probably going to escalate it via ebay because idk, fucking UPS ready post and giving it to USPS

I didn't really check it because I didn't know about these retarded batteries were prone to situations like the one I found myself in.

I just left it in a drawer and waited for a good x220 deal. When I was finally in a position to use it I realize the product I got was fucked.

Thete goes $100 bucks. Fuck me.

I just got a pretty clean x201 tablet for free, did I do good? It didn't have a hard drive but I added one in and have it up and running. Still missing the red nub since that was missing. I even got the dock for it. I had to find a charger for it tho.

-tp logo inside and outside
-ibm logo inside and outside
-tp logo inside ibm logo outside
-ibm logo inside tp logo outside
why is the labeling on thinkpads so inconsistent? did this just happen because of the times at which they were produced? i've seen variance in the logos on models where nothing changed
>>
>>57242571
It's all just a gradual shift over time for Lenovo to remove the IBM branding, but to ease into it.
>>
>>57218165
Anyone here use their TP with a dock? I was looking at used docks and some mention a key/no key. What is that supposed to be?

Also, is it ok if I don't get one with a power adapter. I'm guessing I'll just use the one I use with my laptop.

Stuck deciding between the x220/x220t and the x230/x230t. All their prices seem very close, not sure which to choose. Is the touchscreen worth it?
