IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

is it better than t430 ?
if I have x220 i5, will there be any upgrade (more than the bigger screen ?)

also, can I use my x220 ssd and ram on t420 ?

I really need bigger screen for the work I am doing, but I wonder if its going ot be AT LEAST this good if I switch to t420
>>
I need a cheap as fuck (<£70) laptop to fuck around on and as a just in case to tide me over for a few days when this computer inevitably bites the dust int he near future

t61 or t400? (they are both 65-69 bux)
>>
>>57286286
>also, can I use my x220 ssd and ram on t420 ?
yes there are both ddr3 (ram) and sata (hard drive)
IMO I like the t430 better because it's keyboard feels better to type on, and it is FAR faster (gpu wise) than the t420.
>>57286338
beat up x201, or maybe get one without ram then throw in your own.
Don't bother with anything older than a core i.

T60 Checking in.

Found it at a Goodwill and it was only ~$20 and I put in an SSD I had laying around. Arguably the best laptop I have ever used in terms of quality and speed. I installed Funtoo on it and absolutely love it.

>pic related, my screenfetch
>>
>>57286395
How's the screen since it's an old CCFL backlit is it showing real signs of backlight dulling?

Also does it have issues with SQUEALING when you have the backlight either up too high or too low?
>>
>>57286379
thanks
so im on ebay now, should I get t420 i7 or t430 i5 3320m at 2.6 ghz ?

my concern is, my x220 gets up to 80 C watching HD videos (720p) it never lags or anything, but it does suffer from trivial stuff like that, it gets the work done, however I need more screen space.

so final dilemma:
>T420 i7
or
>T430 i5

>>
>>57286424
80c is perfectly fine
since the t420's i7 will only be a dual core you are far better off getting a t430 with an i5.
>>
>>57286286
T430 is better in the GPU area but keep in mind the T420 still plays 10bit 1080p chinese cartoons flawlessly.
The T430 layout is shit imo but it's fixable by replacing it with a T420 keyboard and flashing firmware.

>>57286424
I'd go for the t420.
>>
>>57286417
Haven't had any issues with either, the backlight is pretty bright and haven't had any issues with squealing. Only real downfall is the speakers on my HTC One M8 are louder and sound kinda better than this. Which isn't the end of the world. The screen resolution I was pleasantly surprised by. Although 1024x768 isn't ideal it is still completely functional and in some ways better than 16:9 (i.e for reading or word processing)
>>
>>57286455
Thanks for replying bud I've been debating on buying one as a shitpost machine and it seems like it might be a good idea since those are my only real worries
>>
>>57286487

Has anyone ever played Final Fantasy XI. The first MMO by square enix?

I want to play that on a thinkpad. I hear it runs on netbooks. But I definitely want a laptop with a great keyboard, since that game was all about using the keyboard.

What would you recommend for me? say 1k budget? or cheaper.
>>
>>57287997
W520
>>
>>57287997
Does it need a numpad? The W700 and W701 are the only respectable non-ancient Thinkpads to have one. Price/performance suffers, but it should still be well within your budget, and these workstation models should be more than sufficiently specced to handle an old MMO. You could probably even get yourself a W700ds within $1000 and become an instant /tpg/ deity.
>>
>>57287997
For 1k you can get a refurbished >>57288012 with maxed out specs and a 3 year warranty.
>>
>>57288089
why the fuck would you spend 1 grand on a 5 year old laptop?
you could get a maxed out really good condition w530 for less than that.
and that would perform FAR better.
>>
>>57288072
yes numpad is critical for the game. thank you for reminding me

>>57288012
>>57288089
ah interesting

>>57288101
yeah I'm not sure about the price my man, i just want to play alone somewhere

>>57288072
sounds cool :0 hows the battery life on these things? It is an old mmo, but they have addons and shit, I play fairly hardcore, i imagine it puts stress on the cpu if i do more things with it. However yes, still an old MMO, the only thing I read is that good GPU is not required because of it's old engine.
>>
>>57288101
I was thinking about EU prices, you definitely won't get a maxed out W530 with great warranty for less than 1k€ where I live.
The W520 goes maxed out for >200€ less at my vendor, which drops the price to less than 1k€.
>>
>>57288167
>hows the battery life on these things?
I don't own one so I can't testify to it personally, but it's probably not great. They're 17" behemoths with quadcore CPUs and high-end dedicated GPUs, and they're old. I wouldn't expect much more than a couple hours even out of a good 9cell.
>>
>>57288187
>warranty
Found the problem
stop looking at refurbished computers. it's a god awful waste of money, and if the laptop has already lasted 4 or 5 years then it's not going to die any time soon

2. Battery:
How do I open my battery housing without breaking it? I want to upgrade my cells.
also, does anyone know where I can get an empty 9 cell battery housing?

3. CPU:
I have a removable CPU.. Can I use the newer generation chips in it?

4. Extra slots:
My main OS is installed on a m.2 SSD, so I now have 2 extra bays I don’t really use:
1. Internal Harddrive bay
2.CD drive
What can I do with those? I don’t really need any more disk space.

Yeah, it runs Doom on high details/with the screen large great. No lag. The sound works without fuckkery too, which is nice. Native res is only 640x480 so it doesn't look too shit even though it's not CRT.

Duke3D runs like a slideshow when multiple enemies are on screen. It's playable on low details with the screen small, but still not a smooth framerate. I'd say that's about its limit.

I need to get more RAM and see if that helps (I'm running 16MB currently, which is Duke3D's minimum).

my idea was to tear out one of the the WWAN antennas (which I'not using and never will anyway; I'd leave both inbuilt WLAN antennas intact so I can disconnect all that can porn and revert to using them), plug its cable to either of the wifi card's connectors, desolder the metal shit off its other end, solder some other shit to it and shove that shit into a can. am I anywhere close?

anyone know a good place to get replacement batteries for a T61? I bought one off ebay, that REPORTS its a 4600mah in the windows power results(Can faked batteries spoof those tests too?), but it only manages to give me ~70 minutes.
>>
>>57297716
it's probably not spoofing anything
there's a difference between cell quality and capacity
>>
>>57297735
huh... Well, any recommendations for a place to buy a replacement? I paid $30 for that one, but was refunded after raising hell on ebay.

Was hoping to get the battery AND the T9300 for around $50 total(anything more than that, and its not really worth the upgrade, right? A cheap used i5 thinkpad would run $150 and beat the shit out of a maxed T61)
>>
>>57297716
Monitor the usage with BatteryMon while using it and look if there's any random sharp decline in "time remaining on battery".

>Can faked batteries spoof those tests too
If it's a smart battery yes, you can check and restore the original firmware with the lenovo battery firmware utility.

>>
>>57297770
They're unofficial batteries. You know, the kind you see on ebay for $30...

The reporting time is actually pretty consistent. From 100%, when i first unplug, it says theres only ~1:20 minutes left. Obviously thats not what a 100% official lenovo battery gave when it was new[supposedly it was ~6 hours].

I'm really not sure what to do with this, cause the numbers *seem* to all make sense except the estimated time left on battery power. It *should* be a lot more than 1:20 when at 100%. I mean its literally only had 3 or 4 cycles put through to 'calibrate' it.(charged overnight, full discharged to 2%, fully charged again, discharged again.... Each time only giving ~80 minutes)

SUP /tpg/ a roommate of mine is going to a technology kind of meet up soon. I've been told in the past people sell thinkpads cheap there. I only have like a 100USD to put towards a thinkpad at the time. I already have a R61 and I would like to upgrade. What models (other the the mempad 420 and a x220 which probably be out of my price) should I have him look for? I read from the buyers guide either an X200(201), T400(401,500,or 501), or a X61. So? You do realize 10W is actually iGPU and the other 35W is the wost case scenario with 100% usage of every single internal component, including all pcie lines?
Actually after disabling turbo OR disabling hyperthreading it can work just fine with overclocked nvidia gpu. The only problem is throttling when gayming in the docking station... but this also applies to dual-core models.

Not him but try stressing the cpu with something like cpu-z while monitoring the wattage, it'll max even if the igpu is disabled and some pcie lanes unused.

Why the hell would you upgrade the cpu and then gimping it by limiting its capabilities?

>>
>>57301012
My T430 doesn't have that. It's powered by Intel.
I really want to run Windwos and Ubuntu in seperate partitions and I don't think it's exactly about performance what lets you run Linux just fine. I heard from someone that upon installing Linux on a partition deleted important Windows components so he had to use Linux for a long time. I don't really think running Optimus solves anything.
>>
>>57301106
Generally, Optimus laptops require some special work to make them work within Linux. This is not the issue with Intel, they just work.
You should have no problem with dual booting wangblows and loonix. I have Windows 10 and Debian Testing in my T430 with UEFI boot and everything works perfectly.
Thinkpads are different than the rest of Lenovo laptops.

>>
>>57303803
It doesn't work with T440 and onwards due to the removal of the dedicated volume controls. There's no mod that can fix this, it's an electrical incompatibility.

might be possible to use the meme keyboard with some hardware mods, like hooking up the keyboard to a teensy and wire that shit up to a usb port internally, but i don't have autism(yet).

>screen won't even be ccfl backlit for maximum comfort

Reminder lenovo have some of the worst backlighting of all laptops since they went LED.

Shit RAPES my eyes it gets uncomfortable as fuck. If you are sensitive to this sit you are screwed with Lenovo.

Lenovo suck at screens in general though look at all the issues they had in recent years with their lower line of ideapads and shit having fucked up screens with gradient banding making them useless for most media unless you want to deal with shit looking 8 bit and their response after a pretty big backlash from consumers?

"just tilt your screen that will fix this hardware tier issue you will still see at any angle lol"

Hello guys, I just got a Thinkpad T400. Though I am now having a major problem, which is that the wireless is shit. Just to connect I have to face the laptop a certain way and even that doesn't work sometimes. Is there anything I can do about it other than buy an external wifi card? And, if I must buy one, does anyone here know of one with a good range that will fit with the laptop's verticle USB's?
>>
>>57304095

>buys a 8 years old laptop
>complains about bad wifi

get real, what do you expect ?
>>
>>57304111
I have some laptops from 2006 and 7 that have fine wifi

Depends on the range and where he is though I guess I'm talking "I'm fine on a 2006 laptop about 50 feet from and through some walls and upstairs with no drops or real issues"

Maybe his router is shit too, maybe the card is fucking up in his thinkpad
>>
>>57304111
Dude, I have an old PSP and it can connect fine to my WiFi perfectly from my room, even used to stream 720p video. This Thinkpad wifi is shit. I had my laptop on the floor right next to my router and got 200 kb/s on pacman.
>>
>>57304060
>ccfl
Hah, this is one place I'm happy they're upgrading. I'll take oled any day of the week.
>>
>>57304172

OLED forever yeah of course as long as they circumvent the burn in using pixel shifting or something

I'm talking about their LED backlighting. It's god awful.

Can someone please help answer my question about the wireless? If I can't find a solution, I'll probably drop another few hundred on a newer one AGAIN. Honestly I'm starting to really feel like used thinkpad is just a meme.

I've only found desktop wireless cards can compete. not win, just compete.
>>
any /tpg/ verified refurb vendors?
Looking for a t420 or x220 and don't want to end up with shit.
>>
>>57304453
Well I've used two other laptops in this room and both of them work (Lenovo B560 and some shitty Gateway) for streaming 720p video. But this laptop, if I can even get it to connect, will take 30 seconds to load about 2 or 3 seconds of a 144p video.
I'll probably liquidate the Thinkpad and just buy a better laptop, most likely an XPS or something. I'm done with these shitty things. Honestly before I was thinking about getting a newer one to see if it fixes this problem but I really do think that it doesn't matter what thinkpad I get, they'll all be shit.
>>
>>57304482
In the US any decent looking eBay vendor should be fine.

this one >>57304095? could be an issue with the antenna, check if it is connected properly and that the cable hasn't snapped in two near the hinge area
>>
>>57304576
It could not be the wireless card. I have doubts that it is the wireless card. I think it is the antennas. That's the reason I am going to buy a new laptop. But for arguments' sake let's just assume that the card is the problem. It's not like I can get a better one because I've already done research on this subject and everyone says that all of the wireless cards you can get on this laptop have similar performance. I could not get any better ones because of the BIOS lock that only lets you use certain chips.
Now, let me tell you why I think it's the antennas: I am about fifty feet away, trying to connect through 1 wall. I should be perfectly able to do that. As I said before, I have a 2004 PSP that can do it. Even when I get right next to the access point, I only get about 200-400 kb/s down, whereas the desktop in my room gets 2 mb/s down. Something is wrong here if I can't get good speeds right in front of the router. This really seems like a problem with the antennas and not with the card. So yeah, I do think I need to buy a new laptop.
>>
>>57304604

I'm posting on a T601F with the stock T61 wireless card with the router as far away as possible and have never had any problems. Your card is fucked, replace it for $15 instead of dropping $1500 on a whole new machine.
>>
>>57304711
lol I'm genuinely curious, I haven't had any issue with this laptop

if I wanted (You)s, I would have said some next level inflammatory shit like Thinkpads are shit go buy Dell or something
>>
>>57304745
Are you SURE it's the card? Like I said, I am going to double check those wireless antenna cords, make sure they aren't severed, make sure they're properly screwed in, etc. If they look fine, should I just assume that they are and get a new pci wireless card, or should I replace both for good measure?

You can rip the wireless card and suka mikrofon out of the X60 really easily, maybe the T60 as well.

As for OpenBSD be wary that its power consumption is worse than Linux, and Linux's power consumption in turn worse than Windows. It eats through battery like a bad bastard. sndio, pdksh, softraid crypto GOAT though.

Ok, /g/, I have what is probably a simple problem. I recently upgraded to an SSD and performed a clean install of Windows 10 on my x220t. Upon getting set up, I have discovered that my pen works fine with the screen but inputs from my fingers are no longer being read.

I have verified that all of the drivers that I have are enabled and up to date; I've tried some of Lenovo's detect and update services and nothing has been detected; and I've tried some of those shitty 3rd party driver detectors and didn't find anything. From Google, it seems as though I'm missing these drivers:
>Virtual Touch Interface
>Virtual Touch Driver
But I'm not sure if they're needed. I do have the message shown in the status of my hidden touch screen drivers.

Has anybody dealt with this before? pic related

Lads redpill me on ram in notebooks pls!

I have a meme ThinkPad L540 which came with 6gb ram (2 slots 2gb + 4gb). Is this okay? Usually ram kits are always equal I thought?

If I want to upgrade this should I replace the current 2gb with equal 4gb to overall 8gb or could I add a 8gb instead of the 2gb for overall 12gb?
I'm confused pls send help

its not optimal but it works
generally, two of the same 4GB will work better.
Telling from your question I doubt that you are doing tasks that require more than 8GB anyway.

This just came in the door 50 minutes ago. I'm still a bit shocked about how inexpensive this machine was...

Thoughts? It's the first high end machine I've ever had. Previous was a meme-tier Lenovo Z50-70, with an SSD equipped.

This is a Lenovo W541, please so far.

FUCK I fixed the WiFi problem I was talking about earlier in the thread. I feel stupid now. If anyone else has the problems I did, try disabling IPv6 in the DHCPCD config file (/etc/dhcpcd.conf) And this fixed the issue. Now I can connect from everywhere in my house and get 1mB/s down.
