For you Seiko experts, opinion on the 6R24 movement?

What's a fair price a watch that uses it?
>>
>>57104700
The prices start from around 1.2K USD as far as i recall.

Though, besides being a 28.8K BPH version of the 6R15 with cluttered indicators, why would you want it?
>>
>>57104700
>why would you want it

One of the pieces i was looking at has it.

But if it's basically an average movement then I don't feel like paying over $1.2k for it.

It's a modification of an already excellent movement, which on it's isn't the most uncommon nor is it vastly common movement.

Also, consider the following:

People pay as much for watches powered by the 2824 (&derivatives), while it's available in watches in the 300~400 range.

Is Chrono24 a trustworthy place to buy from? How do you even go about it when there is no buy option in the product screen, only "Contact seller"?

The first seller I contacted was Italian and seems he simply ignored me entirely, absolutely no answer after 48h. Now I'm about to contact a Spanish seller for the same model of watch (Bambino V2), but the ad only has 1 picture and it's a stock one, not one he took himself. This is starting to look fishy.

Where else could I buy a decently priced Bambino that ships to South America with tracking & insurance for a sane price? Fucking Amazon asks for twice the watch's own price as a "tax deposit", absolutely unfeasible.
>>

I wouldn't exactly recommend the cocktail time. I does look great on paper, but the domed mineral crystal and sapphire exhibition caseback is a weird combo. Plus, it's strictly a dress watch.

You could get a Citizen Grand Classic like >>57104260

Excellent watch for the price with finishing that's close or on part to SDGM series. Miyota 90XX cal so it's also considered a highbeat. Also, the rotor looks really neat, Especially with the Phoenix emblem.

Oh, and you can never have enough Seiko's. I've had like 10 or 12 pass through my ownership.

The Seiko is quite thick and wears like a deck watch, more casual than it appears in pictures. The Nomos is a thin dress watch. The Nomos is more refined in every aspect, from the hands to the markings, to the movement decoration, to the way the case is built (much more "seamless" feel). However the Seiko has its own charm with the beautiful enamel dial. I'd say the Nomos but both are worth every penny I paid for. Might sell the Seiko in a few months, but still enjoying it for now.

I'm quite happy with the blue perlon strap i chose for my Time Easy Reader...aesthetically at least. It's much too longer for my small wrists. I'll need to cut it down. This will hold me for a while longer while i decide on a mid-range automatic.

The SKX is more of an international model. Though it might also come with a English/frogmuncher dial, the Spanish one is more common.

If you want a Kanji datewheel you'd have to go for JDM models like the SARZ005 or the SARY057.

Presage SARY055 here. Wouldn't hesitate to buy another from the presage line. The finishing is beyond all reasonable expectations, and regulated to an accuracy of -0.5 s/d. This model is around $280 USD, the light sunburst is very nice on the dial. Don't know about the NATO I put on it, I was experimenting, but I don't think it looks bad. Opinions on the NATO anyone?
>>
>>57115691
It's essentially a poor man's SARB. Put it on a perlon or leather if you don't like the bracelet, it looks bad on a nato.

Haven't posted here in a while, are my memes still on point?
>>
>>57115787
I wouldn't say that, I consider both have their equal advantages, with only a $80 price difference. The SARB has the 6R movement, over the 4R in the SARY, but then again, they're similar base movements, just the 6R has an upgraded barrel and mainspring extending it's power reserve 20 hours. And the SARY has superior finishing on the case, a finely done brushed/polished combo, and they really went all out with the finishing. I've had the SARB, but wouldn't consider it better by any means. But the SARB clasp is much better. I specifically liked the blue dauphine hands and the chapter ring, the light sunburst was also part of the deal breaker for me. But I was kind of iffy with the grey NATO, I think it comes down to preference then at this point.
>>
>>57115848
Oh right, now that I see that, I think I took the picture around 2am, I generally use the Kanji because it has a sense of authenticity, but yeah I think it was just in the middle of changing days, as it goes from Kanji to English around 1-2am, and around 230am it flicks back to Kanji

It is an Accurist Celestial, a rebrand of the Citizen Astrodea. Same movement also found in the Campanola Cosmosign. Quartz movement with dial that rotates in sidereal time. Comes in versions for 50 and 35 degrees N latitude - had to search forever to find a 35, as they're out of production.

The bottom left is a Seiko from 1990 with a 5S21 movement. 4Hz Quartz movement that uses a vial of liquid to damp the stepper motor, resulting in a completely smooth sweep second hand. Only made 1989-1991.

Can't post without a picture; here's a close-up on the Hamilton's guts.

From top to bottom, from left to right
Mido chronoghraph, a ck watch gift from my dad although it is not that good i really dig the looks, Festina and a hanowa Swiss, my beaters for work, a cheap citizen someone gifted me, a bomberg pretty heavy watch, Hamilton khaki eto, an eternamatic kontiki 20 that watch is more than 50 years old, a haste slendermatic that is a mexican watch brand that at the start used buren Swiss movements, also very old nearly 60 years those were from my grandfather and finally my favourite, an Alpina alpiner automatic

What do yo think?

Got the SARB017 back from servicing (was running almost two minutes slow per day, now up around -1s). Surprisingly, the Seiko AD in Toronto honored the Japanese warranty, which was good since it meant that I did not have to fall back on Massdrop. That was nice of them. Unfortunately they are also completely fucking disorganized, so not only did they have the watch sitting on a shelf for two weeks before calling me, but they also had no record of what work was performed or what parts were replaced.

Look guys, I'll be honest.
I hate watches. Literally every watch posted in this thread just looks ugly imo. It comes to a level where it can be a turnoff for me if a girl is wearing watch, even if she is absolutely gorgeous. I don't know why, but that's just how it is for me.
Anyways, I came to realize that a watch could be very useful for me, and I want to buy one that is similar in appearence to pic related. Also, I'd rather it be either a mechanical watch or a kinetic/solar powered watch, not a battery powered one.
Any recommendations?

What are you looking for in a watch, what design aspects appeal to you, and how much are you looking to spend.

How much you spend doesn't only get you a more accurate movement, but a far superior finish and higher quality components and materials.

From your earlier post, we can't really discern what it is you want from your watch. You want one because you feel it will be useful to you, but you also want a minimalist design, which severely limits the usefulness of a watch.
>>
>>57120780

Its always depressing to go into the smartphone general since you can get so much high tech packed into a small package for only 400$ while it has a bette resolution screen than your neigbours tv. Then I think of Seiko, Orient, Citizen and the brand name stamped on the sides of "fake rollies" that shall not be named, and think, watches can actually have some good value pieces too even though their oldfashioned as fuck.

The smartphone general is depressing because it is the same old poorly built shit being shilled over and over and over again. It reminds you that the Android environment is substantially less diversified than it was even two years ago, it reminds you how fucked Apple is, and it reminds you that the future of phones is shit. I'm just going to try and keep my S4 running as long as possible and focus on watches instead.

Hi there!

You seem to have made a bit of a mistake in your post. Luckily, the users of 4chan are always willing to help you clear this problem right up! You appear to have used a tripcode when posting, but your identity has nothing at all to do with the conversation! Whoops! You should always remember to stop using your tripcode when the thread it was used for is gone, unless another one is started! Posting with a tripcode when it isn't necessary is poor form. You should always try to post anonymously, unless your identity is absolutely vital to the post that you're making!

Now, there's no need to thank me - I'm just doing my bit to help you get used to the anonymous image-board culture!

Hey folks,
So as I spend more time here, and more time educating myself about watches, I have decided I really want to shift my collection to some high value pieces. By "high value" pieces, I mean giving little regard to Brand names, and more priority to actual features of the watch (i.e. good reputable movement, accuracy, sapphire glass).

Please share some expertise on which brands/models are recommended.
Ideally, I would love some "low priced" (lets say anything under 1500 USD) watches that share movements with higher end watches. I know certain luxury brands buy third party movements (i.e. ETA movements) and modify them, then put them in their luxury watches and charge an arm and a leg for them. Style wise, I'm completely open. Dress, Diver, Field etc. Lets make these recommendations as if cost was not an object... the main object is "VALUE". Recommend as many as come to mind. I'm the kind of guy who like to switch up watches daily, so I plan to buy a handful of them. I just want to stop wearing shitters.

Example, from my limited research, Stienharts appear to provide good value (movements, sapphire). But I don't know if their watches are built well or will last. Looking forward to hearing recommendations.

(NO quartz, I have a few Accutrons. Now I am specifically looking to purchase Automatics or mechanicals).

I feel as though I've had a good experience with sapphire in the past. I've bashed the face of the watch onto a iron patio chair and shockingly it didn't leave a mark on the watch, unlike the chair.
I remember being told at a jewelers shop when I was looking at a MOTM speedy that the Hesalite can only be buffed out once. The fact that it can only be cleaned up once kind of negates the benefit in my mind? But maybe I don't have the full picture.
Won't acrylic damage more easily?
Also again, I don't mind the glare of the sapphire... I kind of like it actually.

>>57125059

There's nothing wrong with Steinhart. They're great watches for the price. The only reason people (like 3 autists) shitpost them so hard is because another autist spams his Steinhart every thread.

That being said, for $1,500 you can do much better than Steinhart. You could get a beautiful slightly used high-end watch for that.

Ahh, I see (r.e stienharts)

And the $1500 is an approx roof per watch. I would spend more on a single watch if the added benefit is disproportionately high.

What would any anon deem the price of diminishing returns for watches?

For example folding knives:
When you hit the $250, you can pretty much get all of the top materials on the market from reputable brands.
>>
>>57125909
The more you spend, the more you can get into novel materials and complications. Like silicon mechanical components, diamond instead of sapphire jewels, etc.
>>
>>57125933
I don't know your knowledge base in watches, but I've been seeing your name in here for a few months. What are some high value watches (sapphire crystal, and reliable & accurate automatic or mechanical movement)?
>>
>>57125984
Depends what you want. Vintage, or at least pre-owned can get you some pretty good value.

For new stuff:

Seiko 8R48 chronographs are pretty advanced and you can get them for under 2k. They have three vertical clutches, one for each chronograph hand.

Otherwise Tissot and Mido both make certified chronometer watches for around 1k.

Komandirskies are found on eBay, you buy them directly from Russia. Model number should be 811306

Though i don't get something here.

The Komandirskie is a 30~35$ watch while the SNK809 usually goes 50$. So just skip a couple of instant noodle meals, won't be that harmful.

Also, SNK comes with a more or less decent strap from the start while for the Komandirskie you will have to spend shekels for a new strap.

>here's really nothing wrong with the default leather strap

You seem to have not worn proper leathers strap yet haven't you?

Guess it's understandable, counting that most battery monkey's usually only have either cheap pleather/faux leather or rubber straps for sale. The Komadirskie strap, though made out of real leather, is known to be pretty awful and in reality it is.

>>57127817
Wonderful.

My only other advice is to order a different strap for it. Either a nylon nato or a decent leather strap.
>>
>>57127890
I just have a question about winding watches, because I only have ever used automatic. Once I set the watch correctly and wind it, do I have to reset it every time I wind it? Or can I wind it while it's still powered from it's last wind without it interrupting the watch?
>>
>>57127890
And what does a "proper" strap do different? This isn't about tin can bracelets, no, it's perfectly pliable and secure just as any.
>>
>>57127908
You can wind it at any time, whether it's fully dead or still ticking.

I'd recommend winding it a couple of times per day too keep it running fine.

>>57127918
It's very roughly made strap to start with, but that somewhat add to the character of the Komandirskie.

A proper leather strap feels good on your wrist, doesn't feel like it out of place when on you wrist and adds to the overall appeal of the watch.
>>
>>57127908
Automatic watches, as the name suggests, wind them selves automatically by way of a weighted rotor which, with the help of our friend gravity, tries it's very best to always stay pointed downwards, meaning that as your wrist moves, that rotor will try it's best to stay that way, winding the watch as it does.

Vostoks do have a handwind function, but it's not really needed. So long as you wear the watch, it will keep running, and will not need to be reset, save for maybe once a month, when you're taking a shit, and notice that your watch is a little out.
>>
>>57127600
Meranom
>>
>>57127966
Komandirskies aren't automatic friendo
>>
>>57127952
It has "rough" edges, but so do lots of leather items. The stitching is straight and secure. It's just leather, not some roach on my arm, so it doesn't feel out of place. In fact, I don't feel it at all. This notion that it warrants immediate replacement is ill placed. Maybe it will wear out eventually, but so will most small leather items being eaten away by sweat and stress. Did you know that the Vostok-derived watches being supplied to Russian military forces use this same strap (but with a deployant clasp)?
>>
>>57128000
Then ignore everything I just said until automatics are mentioned.
>>
>>57128024
Even so, the Ratniks have a overhead nylon cuff band as well.

And i've seen that the people who bought the Civilian versions of the Ratnik have also swapped away leather strap. The (non-cosmetic) differences between the two is that it doesn't have nylon cuff strap and doesn't come with the AM shield installed. (But you can add it)
