If you are a retard, I know it takes time for you special people to catch on things just go ahead and watch more than just half an episode before wasting time making yourself look this bad shitposting about something you don't know.
Apply this bit of knowledge to your everyday life, not only some random tv series. People will probably won't walk away from you or stop talking when you are near and maybe you can start making friends again.
Good look friendo.

I see.
I get the feel that one needs to know some sort of degree in programming to fully utilize Linux.
Lots of stuff gets done in terminals and not knowing that to look for, or what to do to begin with is a big drawback.
>>
why does this

sort FILE | uniq -c | sort -n

properly give you a list of strings in a file sorted by their uniqueness, but

uniq -c FILE

only checks if things are unique compared to the next line? the string can be at the beginning and then end of the list or occur any number of times and still have it say 1, and it'll only say 2 if the string is repeated consecutively
>>
>>57078582
There's actually a shell variable called "PATH" which is a list of directories that the shell uses to look for executables. /usr/bin and /bin are two directories in that list.

Check it out with
echo $PATH

Programming - nah. If you want to do something like downloading, you type "apropos download", then you get a list of programs related to downloading stuff. To learn to use them, you read their manpages "man program" (if the program is a GNU program, use "info program" since info pages are usually more informative).
>>
>>57078665
isn't $PATH my home directory?
Or is $PATH the place where a certain file is located?
>>
>>57078690
Your home directory is $HOME. To get a list of all variables type:
env
>>
>>57078669
probably xubuntu
>>
>>57078690
PATH includes a bunch of directories, seperated by ":". If a executable file is in one of these directories, you can type the name to run it.
>>
>>57078727
>you can type the name to run it.
*without typing the whole path
>>
>>57078706
Oh I see.
$PATH shows you where binaries reside.
Where as $HOME just shows you the home folder.
>>
>>57078743
Yep. You can always check what a variable includes by typing
echo "$PATH"
echo "$HOME"
echo "$USER"
etc
>>
>>57078690
I explained what PATH is: It's a shell variable. It's just a string of characters, abstracted as a list of directories, delimited by colons (:).

When you type any command like 'ls' or 'echo', it finds those commands by searching through the directories in PATH.

The $ is just how variables are expanded in bash, so $PATH will expand to the value of PATH.

Your home directory is typically a variable called HOME and always alternatively can always be shortened to ~ instead of $HOME.

Since you're clearly pretty new to the shell/terminal, I highly recommend the free, downloadable book linked in the OP called "The Linux Command Line". It's oriented for absolute beginners, and if you read through the whole thing, you'll end up like a total wizard compared to most people in these /fglt/ threads. And then you can be the helpful person :)
>>
>>57078653
>what to do to begin with is a big drawback.

There's no real good guide out there for the foundations of what you need to use GNU/Linux, simply because of how complicated everything can be and how many functions everything has.

For example, whenever I have to use grep, chances are I'm either using the flags "-i -e -o -Z -P" or some combination of those. But if you're trying to filter through text and you decide to go through "man grep", you're going to have absolutely no idea what flags to use unless you start experimenting or looking everything up on stack overflow.

So basically, in every GNU/Linux guide, there's always a disconnect between what's available for use and what the user most likely needs or wants, and there's generally tons of jargon you wouldn't understand if you're just a regular person. (what perl is, what regex means, what pattern is and why it isn't just called regex, anything -Z does in grep, etc.)

Dual-booting Korora with Win 8 or 8.1, Windows being just for Blizzard and maybe EA games. Linux for all else.

128 GB SSD, 3 TB HDD. About 500 GB of the HDD will be allocated for Windows. Other than that:

SSD:
100 MB for /boot
Rest for /

HDD:
16 GB for swap (I have 16 GB of RAM)
30 GB for /var
20 GB for /tmp
Rest for /home

Does this look good? Also, any other advice concerning dual-booting? I know to install and fully update Windows first, so it doesn't nuke GRUB.

Linux/GNU? maybe, since Linux is basically the engine, but leaving out GNU completly ... I mean his book is about a huge load of GNU programs where a big part of them RMS has contributed to and which go under GNU. That said, GNU also isn't only some programs, it's also the Clib and other things that made the OS everything started before Linux was even a idea. When you add another engine, it doesn't make it automatically a different OS.
>>

>Are video playback and other graphics-related things working smoothly, and just GNOME is slow?
Videos are working just fine. Even high-res x265 videos.. only the GNOME animations are so goddamn sloppy.

Hi there!

You seem to have made a bit of a mistake in your post. Luckily, the users of 4chan are always willing to help you clear this problem right up! You appear to have used a tripcode when posting, but your identity has nothing at all to do with the conversation! Whoops! You should always remember to stop using your tripcode when the thread it was used for is gone, unless another one is started! Posting with a tripcode when it isn't necessary is poor form. You should always try to post anonymously, unless your identity is absolutely vital to the post that you're making!

Now, there's no need to thank me - I'm just doing my bit to help you get used to the anonymous image-board culture!

You'll want more like 512MB for /boot on that ssd

For the HDD: why bother making a bunch of partitions?
Also, if you have 16GB of RAM just do like 1 or 2 GB for swap.

Furthermore, you need to put the swap on the same drive as the OS.

Further furthermore, I recommend dual booting by using your BIOS to switch boot drives because Winblows will sometimes bork your bootloader especially when updating (hard experience here)

Normal people wouldn't know or care about what the fuck he was talking about, most people that knew what GITS was wouldn't either, because it was shit.

well ok at least I had some progress...
had to boot from usb system, chroot and do the efibootmgr at least to get things back together....
the boot worked fine and at first I tried with a single partition in the new drive, a single linux
afterwards I've added the ntfs partition at the end of the disk and now computer is just beserk again...

also I like to use a swapfile somewhere on the root partition, as its easier to move out/resize if needed instead of messing with the part themselves
also2 with 16GB you barely need swap, only for hibernation, but with a SSD boot is already fast enough, besides that suspend to RAM is good enough

Make sure you select the whole script (use the scrollbar), put it in a text file, save it, chmod +x path/to/file, then run the file with sh path/to/file. Their servers are fucking terrible though and never seem to be able to download them all at once.

well, clearing is basically reseting defaults, plus it also reseted before with bios update

so you want to;
- put / on the ssd

you could also use btrfs, making "/home", "/tmp" etc as subvolumes, mounting them into the approprate locations

Bro, i tend to agree. Most anime i find cringy. The only other anime i've watched besides GITS is death note, and that's only because i got it from my brother as a gift. Death note was pretty cringe.
There are also parts about GITS which i don't like, for instance the high-pitched voices of the tachikomas drive me nuts. GITS is a great anime for someone who doesn't normally watch it.

Nobody actually runs Linux as their primary OS. They mess around with it for a while as a hobby, blog about how great it is and what expert computer users they are, and then they eventually uninstall it and go back to Windows because their login manager is segfaulting, their function keys don't work, and they can't plug in a USB external hard drive without causing a kernel panic.

So I just installed a really minimal debian testing system, then dist-upgraded to unstable...

Anyway, something is fucky. Says lots of shit is installed, but it isn't. Like 'man' is not found, but apt-get install won't install it because it thinks it's already installed. Same with GCC and a bunch of other shit.

I don't know if it was already fucked in testing because I immediately edited sources.list and did the dist-upgrade immediately after install.

The animation in SAC/2nd GiG isn't as detailed as the 1995 movie, sure, but it's a TV series with a smaller budget that has to distribute cash between 24 30 minute episodes (the equivalent of 5 2-hour movies). TV anime typically gets animation far worse than what's seen in SAC, even 10+ years later, and you have to dig through golden era OVAs to get the kind of multi-level shading you see often in SAC – most shows are super flat with barely any shading at all.

Where it goes is completely irrelevant to you. alright how about a more straightforward question.

Specifies an alternate configuration file path. By default, i3status looks for configuration files in the following order:
~/.i3status.conf
~/.config/i3status/config (or $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/i3status/config if set)
/etc/i3status.conf
/etc/xdg/i3status/config (or $XDG_CONFIG_DIRS/i3status/config if set)

None of these files exist.

Where the hell is i3status getting its config from.

A hacker is someone who enjoys playful cleverness—not necessarily with computers. The programmers in the old MIT free software community of the 60s and 70s referred to themselves as hackers. Around 1980, journalists who discovered the hacker community mistakenly took the term to mean “security breaker.”

Please don't spread this mistake. People who break security are “crackers.”

Yo ma mans. I just installing arch and I want to get into this arch world. Are there any books or guides to help me do it? I regularly read the wiki when I need to, but it's not enough. Thank you
>>
>>57083552
thank you very much anon

I can't install the proprietary drivers for my card because I get this error "detected x server version is not supported" anyone know of a fix?

I'm on ubuntu 16.10 with an AMD 6770

>>57083906
>install arch

>use your computer as intended

I don't know what you're looking for. There's nothing special about archlinux. Just use it like another OS.
>>
>>57084054
AMD's proprietary driver support is probably lagging. If that's the case, there's nothing to do.
Either use 16.10 with the free driver until AMD releases an updated blob.
Or reinstall 16.04.
>>
>>57083906
The wiki is more than enough, seriously. And if you need anything beyond the wiki it's usually linked in the wiki.

Also what >>57084057 said.

Damn, looks like I'll have to wait. In the meantime is there any way to get the damn fan noise down?

My gpu is so loud and not even warm.

You learn to live with it ;_;
My hd6670 card has a noise at low rpm's

How to make a simple loop in bash?
I have MKV files and ASS files with the same file name and I want to remux each mkv and it's subtitle file to one file with ffmpeg.
ffmpeg -i file.mkv -i sub.ass -map 0 -map 1 -c copy output.mkv
>>
>>57078431
/g/ is for the discussion of technology and related topics.
>>
>>57084836
A loop is easy:

for i in *mkv; do
stuff
done

That said, for your specific task, using the program "find" with it's -exec flag is smarter.

Try (untested):
find . -type f -name '*.mkv' -exec ffmpeg -i {}.mkv -i {}.ass -map 0 -map 1 -c copy {}_output.mkv';'
>>
>>57084893
There should be a space between mkv and ';', srry!
>>
how do i auto mount ntfs partitions the same way loonix mounts the linux parition? i can't access my samba share folders on ntfs partitions because of permission bs. i can share the folders on the loonix partition though
>>
>>57084925
edit fstab
or the easymode alternative, install ntfs-config
>>
>>57084893
And if I want it to be in one line ?
for i in *.mkv; do ffmpeg -i {} -i {}.ass" -map 0 -map 1 -c copy {}-sub.mkv"; done

Why find is better?

One line would be:

for i in *.mkv; do ffmpeg -i "${i}" -i "${i%%mkv}.ass" -map 0 -map 1 -c copy "${i%%mkv}-sub.mkv"; done

This should hopefully deal with the extention crap. Report back.
>>
>>57085003
for i in *.mkv; do ffmpeg -i "${i}" -i "${i%%mkv}ass" -map 0 -map 1 -c copy "${i%%mkv}-sub.mkv"; done

The dot broke it.

i've been running Antergos with KDE for a couple of weeks and am happy with it so far.

some upgrade last week however seems to have broken my login screen (display manager?). I can't select the password field, and only managed to login by arbitrarily pushing keys and my mouse until the password cell suddenly worked.
from what i gathered, the default DM is LightDM. is there some way to reset / fix it easily?
>>
>>57083434
Well, it *can*, just not very easily or safely. You can list the dependencies with 'apt depends packagename' and remove each package one at a time. I hope some wizard has made a bash function or package that makes this easier.
>>
>>57085003
>>57085028
This worked for me
for i in *.mkv; do ffmpeg -i "$i" -i "${i%.mkv}.ass" -map 0 -map 1 -c copy "${i%.mkv}-sub.mkv"; done

What's the difference ?
>>
>>57085028
just do this, faggot:

for i in *mkv; do ffmpeg -i "${i}" -i "${i%%.mkv}.ass" -map 0 -map 1 -c copy "${i%%.mkv}-sub.mkv"; done

What's better?
An alias or a function and why?
For these commands
youtube-dl -x --embed-thumbnial -audio-format mp3 '<URL>'

youtube-dl --exec 'ffmpeg -i {} -c:v libvpx -an -b:v <BitRate> {}-converted.webm; rm {}' '<URL>'
>>
>>57085219
Functions are always better. You should use aliases only for trivial things like:
alias screenfetch='screenfetch -t'
>>
>>57085235
I tried reading this but couldn't make head or tails
http://www.tldp.org/LDP/abs/html/functions.html

>>
>>57085289
What is the difference between using ' ' and using " "?
And is $ is a flag for variable in bash?
>>
Excuse my lack of knowledge on the subject,

But will I have any kind of trouble trying to install and use different desktop environments (except for gnome) on an Ubuntu installation? Will it be too messy?
>>
>>57085159
How much do you love it? I was going to teybit out because i like kde but have been running into some bug issues, wondering if Lub' is any smoother / less buggy.
>>
>>57085758
"" is used to pass strings with spaces as a single argument, like "file name" is one argument rather than two ("file" and "name")
'' works similarly, but also prevents the shell from parsing the contents, is passed literally/as-is
example;
$ echo "$SHELL"
/bin/zsh
$ echo '$SHELL'
$SHELL

for $, yes, variables are prepended by $. another common use is at the beginning of a command as seen in examples, which denotes that the command should be run as a normal user, and # for the superuser
example;
$ echo run this as a normal user
# echo run this as superuser
>>
>>57085758
>>57085957
ps. the arguments "$1", "$2" etc that you see contain the arguments passed to the function (or script)
there's also "$@" which is every argument, and "$0" which is the name of the script/function
>>
>>57085957
>>57086026
Then isn't it better to use ' ' than " "?
In case there was some flag/argument in the URL?
Or I misunderstood something?
Also Do I just paste this at the end of .bashrc?
>>
>>57086073
i'm not the same person, yea, $2 should be in single quotes
for some reason he didn't quote $1 at all, though that's fine in this case

and yea, you can place the function in your .bashrc to make it available everywhere
>>
>>57086161
>>57086073
wait, no, $2 should be double quotes
single quotes would pass a literal "$2", not the variable contents
the shell will parse "$2" and resolve the contents of the variable, but won't parse the contents itself again as shell code

it's only when you're putting in an actual URL that you want to use single quotes, like;
youtube-dl 'http://youtube.com/whatever'
