Picrelated on the right is how the TTY for any live ISO looks like.

>>
>>57054536
last i checked, the proprietary nvidia driver doesn't support KMS nor does it provide direct framebuffer access, so you can only get full resolution in X
>>
>>57054609
It doesn't, that's why you used to use uvesafb, it's a separate driver that works with Nvidia.
I've used it on Debian with proprietary drivers.
Well used to work, but apparently EFI fucks it up.
If you boot without EFI and use a driver <361.28 it should still work.

Also you could use nouveau for the framebuffer and deactive it before X. See deactiving KMS and unloading nouveua
https://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/KernelModeSetting/
I haven't tried this, but apparently it works also just fine.

vesafb works also, similarly to uvesafb, but both do require hw support for modes, usually the supported resolutions are pretty weird.
hwinfo should spew out supported modes, you can just plonk those to grub.cfg

The main issue is poor documentation on tty fb drivers and normal video drivers.

Seriously gnome devs if you are going to remove something replace it with something of equal or greater value. I really want to like you but you make it so god damn difficult.

None of the other solutions worked for me in Gnome 3.14 on Gnome Ubuntu 14.10. What finally worked was creating .desktop files by hand.

First, make the folder ~/.config/autostart/ if it doesnt exist.

Then create a ~/.config/autostart/my-app-to-startup.desktop file for each program you want to start on login.

For example, here's what my ~/.config/autostart/pidgin.desktop file looks like:

[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Exec=pidgin
Hidden=false
X-GNOME-Autostart-enabled=true
Name=pidgin
Comment=instant messenging client

Vim is actually god-tier, emacs is not as much.
You don't need to use them directly to reap benefits. You can try using some plugin that provides vi bindings for your favorite editor (unless it's Atom, in which case you should probably just kill yourself).
It'll basically be 70% of Vim in the environment you're comfortable with.

Also, don't try to make Vim replace an IDE like ones from JetBrains. It won't happen (unless you try very very hard, and it still won't be as good).

You do realize that you only change the apparent name in Windows, right? Your user account still uses the same directory as before, named after the initial username.
In UNIX and similar systems. names have meaning. It's what identifies you to the system (which is the whole fucking point of having a name). Changing it changes your identity, so it would make sense to require some knowledge and, more importantly, administrative rights. Remember that user accounts are usually managed by a system administrator in these systems; there's no reason to change names in that system.

Almost. It's also giving some useless fields.

in about:config you can turn "browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML" to true and it will backup bookmarks on close.

I'm new to partitioning, this may seem obvious for you but I'm noob as fuck.
If, when installing a linux distro, I make two partitions (root and home), the linux system is installed in root and I'll put my documents and files in home.
If anything happens (one day my OS crashes or something), can I reinstall the OS without worrying about losing my files at the home partition? Are these two partitions independent?
The only thing I'll have to do (when reinstalling the OS, or installing another one) is mount the home partition:
$ mkdir -p /mnt/home (make the directory in the root partition)
$ mount /dev/(home_partition) /mnt/home (mount the partition)
And I will have my new system but with all my files from the previous OS. Am I right?

>Are these two partitions independent?
yes
>The only thing I'll have to do (when reinstalling the OS, or installing another one) is mount the home partition:
>And I will have my new system but with all my files from the previous OS. Am I right?
yes. And no.

for short, when you install a linux distro you need a primary partition /
If you want you can create a partition for some specific directories, like your /home, /boot, /usr...

Let's say you got the partitions :
>sda1 : /boot
>sda2 : /
>sda 3 : /home

And you want to install a new distro in sda4 and use /sda3 as your home directory, during the install process you'll just have to tell him to use sda 3 as /home and make sure you don't erase or format it.

What you said would work, I do that for my windows partition. I modified my /etc/fstab to automount my windows partition.

And about reinstalling the OS because of a problem, some distributions (like ubuntu), permits you to reinstall it without erasing your data, even if you got everything in the same partition. He will touch the system but not the home directories, and it works fine (the few times I tried it).

Thank you so much for responding!
When I said:
>And I will have my new system but with all my files from the previous OS...?
By 'all my files', I meant all my files in the home partition: my images, music, etc.. folders. Not the installed programs (which If I'm not mistaken, are installed in the root partition)
Would I lose all that?

I could use some help, my Google skills are kind of not helping.

Got a new thinkpad, just installed Debian testing. Did a dist-upgrade. Everything works, but booting takes forever because of "A start job is running for Network Manager" - pic related. It doesn't matter if I'm just on Wifi, LAN, or both. My machine receives its IP via DHCP, like my PC, my Pi and my phone. My DHCP isn't slow, so I don't think that's the issue here.
As soon as the timer ticks down it fails and tells me to check 'systemctl status NetworkManager.service'. I've done that, and apparently the service has been loaded and is running. Seems to be working as intended.

Anyone know what the issue might be? What I can do to troubleshoot? I mean, I can connect via LAN or WLAN, both work. I don't know why the NetworkManager fails.

Network Manager sometimes is a pain in the ass. You can delay the loading of services or also remove entirely their startup, I guess you're using it to connect. Try reinstalling it, and make sure there are no other services trying to connect such as an automatic netctl profile

first make it executable

then put the script in /home/<username>/bin (or anywhere you want really)

and then add the folder that contains the script to your PATH by adding this line
export PATH=$PATH:/home/<username>/bin

to your .profile or .bash_profile or whatever else you use

You can add any folder to PATH but if you have more than one script it's more practical to have everything in one folder.

What shell do you use? If it's bash you can add that export line to .bash_profile which is run when you login or .bashrc which is run every time you start an interactive shell, both of those files should be in your home folder.

>As of now i made a projects folders, but can i add it without it excluding the bin folder?
>It seems to me that it's a variable, can IT be defined doubly?

this
export PATH=$PATH:/home/<username>/bin

means PATH is equal to the current PATH plus /home/<username>/bin so nothing that was there before is changed

if for example you did something like this
export PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/local/games:/usr/games:/home/<username>/bin

then PATH would be reset to those exact folders and anything that was there before not included now would stop being in your PATH

You won't install or use either of those. At best you'll install it, dual booting of course, then spend 20 minutes typing "ls" into the terminal once every fortnight and then remove it. You just feel cool by asking such a "techy" question.

If you were a normal person, you'd spend 2 minutes looking into the differences between those two arbitrary distributions and make a decision for yourself, based on merit and requirements.

Bullshit. RHEL crap isn't better than any other distribution, it's just the support bonus you pay for. Fedora is just RHEL's testbed, no other purpose that it even exists. User repos are empty, community is small. Nobody is using Fedora, exept tippers who fall for the serious distro meme, same with RHEL; people who buy RHEL usually also buy Helvetica fonts (logic: if it costs money it must be higher quality).

Red Hat is a meme.

Hey, guys. I've just spent about two hours trying to get an installer to start from an usb drive.

I'm trying to replace the bunsenlabs installation, that broke after I cleared CMOS. I've burned both bunsenlabs and debian distros onto a usb drive using the following methods: rufus, win32diskimager, and dd at the live CD. I've also tried different usb slots, but not different usb drives (I'm down to one, since my second last died earlier today).

The issue is the installers just show black screen after flashing the line about probing edd (if I remove "quiet" parameter). I've tried edd=off, nomodeset, acpi=off, noapic, nolapic in different combinations with nothing changing except if I mash the keys for a few seconds, the numpad led now comes back on after going out. It used to just go out before.

Did I fuck my hardware up or am I fucked in the brain region? I've never ran into such problems before.

After Stretch freezes there will be a few months (until's its ready for release) where it will act like Debian Stable so if during that period you want the latest software you will have to use Sid and then when they start working on the next release you can safely change to that because it will basically be a copy of Sid. every single DE/WM that I've used has this feature

including the apparently "featureless" gnome

Do you mean strata levels?
aka
mpv player window over your browser, while the browser takes focus but mpv still on top?

Im pretty sure almost everyone de/wm has this.

I do use fluxbox, and it does suppor this

What do you recommend then?
I'm looking at this panel bar I want to try called tint2 that works with openbox and fluxbox

Is there a comparison/rundown of those two WMs?

If they both have that feature then that narrows my choices down considerably

>>57062600
Yes, exactly
>>
>>57062619
openbox has it, fluxbox has it as per above

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_X_window_managers
>>
>>57062619
fluxbox is "already built" compared to openbox.
Openbox you literally do everything your self, fluxbox already has things setup, like a panel, menu, launcher etc

You can use tint2 with fluxbox, just need to remove one line of text in the config file.

And why do you care about the write speed, bud?

Unless you're really stupid and put a swap partition on the drive, the write speed means almost nothing.

Even the shittiest of USB drives is faster to read than a HDD anyway.

I'll try claws.

I used Thunderbird for years on Windows (portable, works great) and on Linux but my Linux T-bird install just shat the bed (won't save sent mail, doesn't download new mail, multiple accounts) so I want to configure a new client and try it out before nuking and reinstalling T-bird whose support IIRC is fading away.

It's built in to most Linux distros. Just install "NETHACK" and run it against the other box for instant root.

How can I turn on wifi in debian for my laptop? Some guides tell me I need to download something, but I can't do that because I don't have wifi
>>
>>57065222
give sudo apt-get update a shot and if it doesn't work you're probably going to have to get a wire and have a connection that way. did you get the non-free repositories? if not, that's probably why it's not working. you'll have to edit a text file somewhere to configure it to download non-free repos
>>
>>57064710
Use a VM, not a bare metal install, while you learn. You'll naturally try multiple distros and VMs are the best way to do that.
>>

>How can I turn on wifi in debian for my laptop?

Linux without non-Free software and drivers is pretty worthless. Debian is for experts to use building other distros or for servers. You can run it on a desktop by basically turning it into Ubuntu, or just ignore the haters and use a variety of Ubuntu to get Debian that works. Not the fault of Linux that proprietary hardware requires proprietary drivers, but that is what it is. If anyone babbles about botnets ignore them. They are teentard trolls and what you do on your machine neither contributes to nor detracts from Linux. You are a user, just a number at most that is all.

Googling with your laptops info is often useful.

You can also cheat by booting a live Linux that has drivers for your hardware, then using it to download the drivers for your Debian install. Reboot into Debian, install drivers, enjoy. Using one distro to assist another comes in handy.

I'm thinking of putting gentoo or arch on an old laptop of mine to start getting into linux. I have no prior experience with linux whatsoever, but I have a copy of the Linux Bile that I never touched so I figured I'll spend my spare time trying to get into linux with it.

Is this an ok way to introduce myself to linux or should I try a different approach? Thanks.
>>
>>57065616
Google "Linux + make and model of laptop" before starting so you'll know of any common issues.

A spare machine is fine to learn on and convenient because you have your main box to surf for info.
>>
>>57065616
That's what I did, however that approach might not be for everyone

I personally suggest using a Linux on a live CD
(Gentoo's HybridISO is actually pretty good) and get a feel for the interfaces and basic commands,
then continue and install
>>
>>57065692
If using a live CD, try to boot to RAM. Knoppix is designed for that and offers the option.

A live USB is easy to create on Windows using Rufus.

You should probably learn the basics of computer networking, anon.
For your scenario, you should look into port forwarding on your router, or dynamic dns for a more convenient solution.

compile a separate kernel, and move the image into a different place on "/boot", edit lilo or grub to use it as a new entry. Than try it out, if it fucks up (which i doubt) than go to the original "slackware" entry and keep trying. New kernels are all pretty much compatible.

>Mind blown

Holy fucking shit, this is amazing. I don't know if Korora is including Gnome apps that don't normally ship with distros, but they're clearly made for the DE, and it shows.

Every Gnome app is fucking perfect. No more than what you ask for. Notes, maps, image viewer, all pristine. And the theme they use in Korora is slick as hell, it all meshes very nicely. Especially in dark theme.

Why do people hate Gnome 3? Is it systemd? Size? It's plenty fast and I'm not sure if I should complain that Korora is using 600 MiB of RAM on a 16 GB machine. That's slim as fuck these days.
