>Almost forgot to mention that with hackintoshing the updates are a bitch and break your system worse than updates on Arch do.

The reason for this is, in order to hackintosh you have to install a bunch of kernel extensions, now using conventional methods these are installed in one of the Library folders. In any case, they're overwritten when you update to a new version.
However, if you're not retarded, you'll be using clover EFI bootloader, which lets you store the kexts that you need on it and it then injects them.
To be honest updating from Mavericks to Sierra, using this method, the only issue I had was having to boot up with graphics disabled until I installed the latest update. Literally just werked.
But then again, I think my system is fairly compatible anyway, if you're using ATI graphics, or have a shit motherboard, you're going to need a bunch more kernel extensions to make it work - which may or may not break with new updates.

I realized that the only thing I use the panel for is icon launchers and displaying the clock, so i tried getting rid of it and haven't missed it at all. kind of silly having tty-clock open all the time, but when you subdivide up the desktop like that you often end up with a little space that wont fit anything interactive.
>>
>>57015918
Not a Mac OS user, but some guy explain it once. Command is used for system stuff and control for per-application stuff. One cool thing that this adds over other major operating systems, is that you could highlight some text in top and copy it with your normal copy shortcut, command-v. On GNU or Windows you would normally copy with ctrl-c, which would stop the process. There are workarounds due to this, like making you also hit alt or shift. I am not complaining about this since it's all I've ever known, but it's interesting that Mac OS solves on of these problems that a lot of people don't even think about.

I know the feeling exactly. I shrink the width of firefox on my right monitor to make room for terminals + a pixel or two of space between the two things. At 1920x1080 I can fit 3 terminals at default size with tiny space between them, but only like half of a fourth one, so I have conky displaying in that corner, but then to the left of my conky is an awkward space I can't really fill. I could probably fit a terminal shrunken down displaying the clock the way you have there, but I already have my panel showing that.

I can't part with a panel because aside from currently open windows, I really get a lot of use from tray icons. Things like mumble, dropbox, and steam can have no visible window but allow some functionality via right clicking their icon in the corner.

Different guy here. What are the best resources for hackintosh stuff? Is it doable on laptops at all? Specifically wondering if I could do it to an X220T. I tried to do it to my T420 back in the day, but couldn't get anything to work. Resolution was 640x480, wifi and ethernet both broken, I think I read I'd never get the nvidia gpu to work, but somehow the bluetooth worked out of the box. I gave up on it after a day or two and just put GNU/Linux on it. I've been meaning to look into all this stuff again, though.

The X220T just has intel integrated graphics, so it's not like that part should be any worse. I guess aside from the obvious stuff working, I'd wonder if the digitizer/stylus/rotation stuff could be setup properly.
>>
Linux doesn't run a mach kernel. It runs A mach kernel.

Darwin has an advanced mach kernel.

OS X runs crippled Darwin as a foundation and OS X is a user.

People gotta back their "walled garden" arguments.

In my experience using Windows, Mac OS and Linux. Mac OS is simply the most pleasant one to work with while Windows is the best for everything else. Maybe if Linux distros didn't break so often they wouldn't be so fucking shit for anything that's non-sysadmin stuff.

>>
>>57016488
Those are some hot opinions you've got there. I mean, I guess I agree about the walled garden argument being dumb and never explained properly, but saying Windows is good for anything is just stupid. You even topped it off by claiming GNU/Linux distros 'break'.
>>
>Maybe if Linux distros didn't break so often they wouldn't be so fucking shit for anything that's non-sysadmin stuff.

I mostly agree with what you're said, except this hasn't been my experience with linux distro and bsd's. Might consider that your programming needs simplification.
>>
>>57016382
Someone has probably tried it before you on that model and posted about it somewhere on the internet.

I probably wouldn't recommend it on laptops though, I mean my p67/2500k system seemed to work pretty great out of the box, but just a quick search suggests people can't get the wifi or audio working on the x220.

If you have a spare HDD you can put in your desktop, are running fairly recent nvidia graphics 6XX+, and are running a core i processor, you're pretty much guaranteed success eventually, it's not a bad way to spend an afternoon.

Maybe check out a guide:
www.tonymacx86.com/threads/unibeast-install-os-x-el-capitan-on-any-supported-intel-based-pc.172672/
You can skip all that shit that you need an OS X machine for by using a relatively untouched distribution, I used this one:
pirateproxy.vip/torrent/9086005/OS_X_Mavericks_10.9_bootable_USB_for_Intel_PCs_(13A603)

It's just a raw filesystem to write to a usb or something, 2 partitions - one is the clover efi bootloader, the other one is just the OS X install image. The bootloader lets you run OS X by injecting kernel extensions to support unsupported hardware, but the only required kernel extension is FakeSMC.kext.
It's not as much effort as it sounds really, after reading about the process you get the gist of how it works somewhat quickly.

Yeah, I'm sure I could. It just doesn't sound fun. I'd rather use GNU/Linux on my desktop since it's actually an important machine. My laptops are more like toys.

apple is spread so far into so many areas, os x is on the back burner and they don't give a shit about it. it might have been relevant in early 2000s but even most applefags today are going to spend the money on ios devices before a macbook. and mac pro is dead. eventually ios and macos will converge somehow, and then you cucks will be jailbreaking your macbook pro.
