Can someone explain to me why what.cd has such retarded policies relating to seedboxes and proxies and VPNs? I wouldn't mind signing up. I would have no problem passing their little interview. I've been pirating music for well-over a decade and I know my way around LAME and ffmpeg. At the same time, I've been doing this for long enough that I am rightfully paranoid about revealing information about myself. I wouldn't dream about connecting to their IRC server on my home IP address, let alone actually doing transfers on it.

The logic behind their choice is clearly related to keeping the site from being infiltrated and shut down, and that's something that I can appreciate and sympathize with. But let's be real for a second, if the feds wanted to get onto what, would they really have any kind of problem? Getting a Comcast residential IP address would be the *only* thing in their way, and it's hilarious to think that would be even remotely a problem for them. After that, they'd immediately have the IP address of anyone leeching from them.

Which gets to my broader point: the only way to be safe while torrenting is to thoroughly mask your IP address. Shouldn't what.cd embrace this, instead? Deny access to everyone *except* those connecting from Denmark. *Require* seedboxes, proxies, and VPNs.

i really fail to understand this fucking private tracker-seedbox economy/philosophy that somehow became the norm within the torrent piracy world. i mean the whole point of piracy is to get things effortlessly and for free, but and now with those seedbox wars/competitions, especially in what.cd where it's pretty much impossible to maintain a normal ratio without one, it's becoming hopeless for people with average inexpensive connection to survive in that environment. i mean i can't be the only one thinking that spending money on piracy is just fucking absurd, am i not? why the hell are those trackers not coming with some sensible bonus systems to support non-seedboxers and instead force this idiotic competition??

it definitely wasn't like that for oink (may it rest in peace), i had my measly 1.5 mbit upload, seeding maybe ~150 torrents 24/7, but had no problem staying on power user until oink ceased to exist. with what.cd, i'm stuck on 0.59 ratio for the last 6 months or so with the same seeding behavior. the what.cd people are definitely getting something wrong here.

as someone who has a shit connection, i thought this for a bit as well. then i compared the retention on wcd to other popular trackers which have a bonus point system and wcd blew them out of the water.
it's annoying, but there are ways around it. jumping on new popular releases, freeleech shit, filling requests, uploading your own rips, etc.
if you have a shit connection, you have to make some kind of compromise. do you really care that much about obscure/high quality rips/fast releases? if you don't, it's not nearly worth it and you might as well stick to soulseek/rutracker.
otherwise, better get on those requests and rip some cds.

Keep believing that. What.cd is only a "private" tracker insofar-as the Feds don't think it's large enough to go after. There's nothing actually keeping it exclusive. Anyone who can spend 30 minutes brushing up on encoders on Wikipedia can get in, and that includes 3-letter-agencies.

Most consumer ISPs give you a new IP address every time you restart your modem. They're not preventing ban evasion through this.

Likewise, anyone with a raspberry pi and the ability to use `ssh -D` can easily share an account on the same IP address. If they think they're stopping anyone, they're depending on those people not being resourceful. Again, security through obscurity.
