Country flags at least make SOME sense on /pol/ and /int/ because they tend to lend credibility to someone's point of view, because they actually live in or near the country they're talking about. A significant percentage of this board uses Linux for ricing and to feel good about themselves, not because they actually know shit about its inner workings, because they're employed as a sysadmin or something. Fuck, even people who DO work with Linux for a living tend to at least dual boot Windows or OS X for compatibility, because they need to use OTHER things, too.

Useragents are a lot less consistent, a lot easier to spoof, and a lot more prone to incite pointless flamewars.

but lately, threads in the catalog just feels like I'm in a toy shop. Can't think of a better way to put it. Maybe a split from consumer electronics might actually be for the best.

My $0.02:

• Outright banning something there is no other board for would be dumb, if people want to discuss a subject that's "not worthy" of /g/ and belongs to no other board, make a board for it instead.
• 90% of /g/ consists of recurring threads or generals that literally get remade with the same OP post and image, which is dumb for a myriad of reasons. Either make a sub-board for generals like /vg/, or have an entire meta-board dedicated to posting generals of all subjects with its own engine, which would be messier.
• Tech support/question threads should be allowed with a designated place for them, since trying to get rid of something people actively want is dumb, no matter how many strongly worded "just google it" stickies you make.
• The debate between "consumer" and "real" technology is dumb, but the idea itself isn't. Don't split it based on operating systems, but the nature of the discussion. "guise help me pick a linux distro" is just as consumer as somebody not knowing to install drivers, and a question on aspects of the win32 API or PowerShell scripts would be as hardcore as any *nix circlejerk /g/ is ever so biased towards.
• /a/ belongs on /a/, /v/ belongs on /v/, same with /jp/, /t/, /wp/ and several other subjects. "Board culture" is bullshit, and most of it is blatant trolling. "Ironic shitposting" and its many variants deserve to be banned since they do nothing other than infuriate most people for the sake of a single mediocre "joke". There is a difference between using an occasional reaction image from an anime as opposed to being a cunt who uses it as an avatar.
• A board dedicated to programming would be underused and largely pointless, a single general on the general or the advanced board would be most likely sufficient. Same with hobbyist Arduino shit and the like.

• Probably an unreasonable request since 4chan is not currently equipped for it, but deleting entire threads with over a hundred replies because they're "off topic" is dumb, move them to a suitable board instead.
• Nobody browses 4chan at work and expects a "worksafe" environment. Blue boards are stupid when enforced absolutely, have a spoiler-like tag for NSFW images instead. Deleting anything even moderately risque on sight tends to make people want to look at it even more.
• The "trolling is not allowed outside /b/", rule (if it even exists at this point) should be enforced. Recurring threads designed to incite nothing but the same fucking debate between operating systems or brands objectively add nothing of value. "[Brand name] KEKS ON SUICIDE WATCH", "You have x seconds to come up with an excuse for not using [controversial thing]", etc. It's not informative, it's not entertaining, it's not even proper "trolling". It's low effort garbage in every respect.
• The sticky, and the wiki by extension, is outdated as hell and is in no way objective. Up to date infographics for things people actually request (Android app recommendations, which Linux distro should I use for X, what smartphone should I buy in the current year for each budget and my various needs, what are some community-approved books and resources for doing/learning thing X, etc.) should be maintained by people who actually know their shit. Something like Logical Increments for device recommendations that are at least moderately trustworthy probably exists, link those instead. Ideally with an image as a reply to the sticky.
• /g/ is already a slow moving board, but most of it could be concatenated into a single sticky and a dozen or so generals. It sounds kind of bad, but most of the shit here doesn't actually NEED to be posted, especially not more than once. The only reason the board gets as much traction as it does is because of the blatant trolling/shitpost threads, not legit discussions.

You could try scaring away people. If the first 5 threads you seen on the board are all insanely technical and are about subjects most people don't even know or care about (6502 assembly, discussions on NAND chips, audio synthesis, comparisons of things like database management and accounting software, etc.) Other than that, have a reasonable policy of allowed threads that's actively enforced, and move anything deemed "consumer" to the consumer board instead, which would breed elitism and debates on what's "hardcore" enough to be considered "real" technology, but hey. Implementing something like R9K and making a general for every commonly reposted subject would also help.

I'm just not sure if just banning "Consumerism" isn't too generic to enforce. /g/ is the way it is because the majority of people who post here are not educated in STEM in any way, and just want to talk about phones and PC parts. I don't think they'd be content with a containment board, and I don't think there's enough people to make these intimidating, highly technical threads.
