Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

Okay so, still new to Ubuntu still got issues, it seems opening a new google chrome tab is enough to crash this OS, no idea why... (Fx 6300 (Fuck me i fell for the amd meme) 8gb of ram etc etc)) and i doubt its hardware related, my options were - Try gentoo but now im thinking that was a meme since this looks too difficult for a total noob who doesnt want to spend forever configuring shit and just wants to jump into an OS that isnt windows - Reinstall Ubuntu and see if that fixes any problems (Using the same USB though... idk if its worth it) - Or just going back to Botnet7.. Can anyone help.. please

I installed Elementary OS 4.0

How come when I click on a file it only requires 1 click to open the file, not a double click like everything else?

Also whats a good music player since the one here gets embedded into the sound settings and causes a lot of problems.

The only differences between distros are philosophy, releace cycle, package management. Everything else is riceable.

I don't know anything about NixOS' package manager, but I seriously doubt that it has any effect on your personal configuration files. How would a package manager influence how you edit your configuration files or how software is using those files? That would mean they're needlessly abstracting a huge amount of needless things.

Literally everything does not work on my fresh arch installation. I used mint and i did not care about lots of stuff. I wanted to change to something that would force me to learn more about linux but to actually install and get everything to work after arch installation i need knowledge that i do not have. I got problems with sound, video, web browser is not working well. Where am i supposed to know what stuff i am missing?

Anything that you can learn on Arch can be learned on every other distribution (except for how to work their package manager). You fell for the oldest misconception.

>>
>>56534454

>With arch i spent some time to read, learn about package manager
You can also read and learn about Mint's package manager. Mint is based on Ubuntu which is in turn based on Debian and they use dpkg/apt/apt-* as their package manager.

> window manager
You can "learn" about your window manager on Mint too or any other distribution. Configuring various options doesn't mean you're learning about it. Looking at its source code and modifying it would count as learning. Again, that's not distribution specific.

>I liked the idea of small system
A "small" system can be achieved on all of the core distributions.
>>
>>56532816
>debian sid with dwm because if debians free software guidelines and suckless approach to software
Same, but I'm considering switching to awesome, as dwm is a little too minimal and lacking in features (I know it can be extended with patches, but still). I think learning dwm first is probably a good idea, because it's so simple and intuitive.

You can almost certainly get back to the Linux terminal by pressing Ctl+Alt+F[1-6]. Once you do that type
sudo pkill -15 Xorg
sudo pkill -15 google-chrome-browser #(or whatever it is called, run apt install htop, then start htop and press F4 to filter, then type chrome and it should tell you the name)

Then you should be able to restart xorg with
startx

This should get you back to a working GUI system but will not fix chrome. To fix chrome you need to check logs and I have no clue where to start there.

Try chromium and see if it gives you the same errors. It could be that you still need video drivers or something.

Post your hardware specs and see if chrome shits the bed again.

The rule of thumb is as follows: the overall volume of work for any distro is more or less the same. The real choice is whether you work configuring it while installing of fixing it while it breaks out of the blue.
>>
>>56535643
Just FYI you probably don't need 50/50 split for drive space. Since you will probably do more media stuff on Windows as you transition to get comfortable with Linux you probably only need 20 gigs max for the Linux partition

Anyone have an idea what Arch ARM release to use for a Chromebook C201? Should be under ARMv7/Rockchip so a veyron release, but that specific model isn't there. About 1 in 10 of my reboots result in my network interface (both wired & wireless) being gone. If I do ifconfig, it only shows "lo" loopback. I've been "fixing" it by rebooting again.

Why does this happen?

How do I fix it?

After it happens, is there some command that I can use to bring wired ethernet back online?

You don't need a GUI bruh.

Just copypaste this and replace INPUT, START, LENGTH, RESOLUTION, BITRATE and OUTPUT with appropriate values. I don't do cropping so you'll have to look that up but it's like 2 options more.

If you learn to use the shell properly you don't even need to run it for each file by hand.

Also ffmpeg is much more versatile than just webm creation; it handles transcoding etc of all different video and audio formats. So when you rip a CD, this is what you'll use to turn wav into mp3 / ogg / flac.

It really isn't. Just add
contrib non-free
to your /etc/apt/sources.list after main and you'll have all the proprietary drivers available. Install xorg-xserver-video-all if you aren't sure what your graphics are.
And if you mean the installer, then it really isn't a pain because it'll tell you which packages to get, and/or you can use the (unofficial) non-free installer:
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/

Also I have no idea because I use VLC even though it has more dependencies and is shittier on bad hardware and whatever else people say against it.

I fell for the arch meme.
Archfags have been claiming that arch has been a lot more stable in the past few years and that X no longer breaks.
3 months ago, I install arch to test dthe claims. A stable distro with AUR access would be fantastic.
Today, I restarted my PC and whar do you knpw, X is broken!
The issue seems to be that arch killed the upowrr-pm-utils package in favor of upower + pm-utils, though neither package provide glib-upower(?) which X seems to rely on.
I'll never fall for the arch meme again, but can I fix this somehow in the meantime?

Trying to start X fails because "object file libglib-upowerX.Y: file not found" or such. Pretty explicit.
>>
>>56538893
How long should it take for x to break?
Ive been using antergos for a few weeks and it seems pretty much stable, aside from issues that are KDE's fault, not arch's.

Yknow, on the subject of linux in general, having to choose between 'hideously outdated software but stable' and 'cutting edge but less stable' seems...I mean...
Why not have a outdated, very stable set of basic system components, maybe even going up to DE stuff, but all other software is kept up to date?
I suppose it would introduce compatability problems between distros, which would be bad, but, that doesnt seem like an issue that couldn't be resolved.

If the installer doesn't have the drivers you need, it's supposed to give you the exact package name(s), which you can then search for and easily find on Debian's package site. Once you find the package page(s), you can download the .deb file(s), put it (or them) on a USB drive, plug that in with the installation disk/usb, and then installer will detect and use it (or them).

I suppose if the installer is just stuck or broken without giving you any useful information, then you must have very unique hardware, because Debian is pretty versatile/compatible with most hardware in my experience.
>>
>>56539202
The usb stick method didn't work for me either, it was not detected and I was unable to install the driver.
> then you must have very unique hardware
No, not particularly. I have a Dell laptop which is about 6 years old. This is what I mean though, you haven't experienced this problem so you think debian is easy and wonderful whereas my experience with it, after following directions on the wiki and other places on the internet, multiple times, is that it was more hassle than it was worth. Gentoo was easier in this respect.
>>
>>56539134
My first time it took quite some time, around a year or a bit less before the first break, but then updatea would break X systematically for months on end. This time it took only 3 months.

In my experience, gentoo is the only good distro. You get bleeding edge packages and atable ones, and due to installing from source, you can mix and match without having to pull in half the distro into unstable. Its flaw isn't compile time (which is very low on 99.9% of packages, with -bin packages available for 99.9% of the rest), but rather options creep (packages.* files describe rules that become so complex that you reach a point where you can't update or install anything without tons of conflicts), but you can try just deleting those files to fix it - while I was looking at arch as a solution to that, it's obviously not an option.>>56539134
>>
>>56539287
I guess if you have the time and patience to install Gentoo, that's cool, but I prefer a simple installer that can quickly give me a minimal base to install packages on. (which is why I have my eyes set on OpenSUSE Tumbleweed...)

But I think what this boils down to is that there's obviously not 'one distro to rule them all,' as every piece of hardware can be potentially unique and work better on some distros more than others. Plus people just have different preferences and needs. That said, hopefully things trend toward distros being compatible with all hardware in the future.
>>
>>56539496
>I prefer a simple installer that can quickly give me a minimal base to install packages on.
It wasn't that for me though, after all the time dicking around trying to get things to work I could have installed a gentoo base.
>hopefully things trend toward distros being compatible with all hardware in the future.
amen to that.

Is there any sort of ISO for debian or ubuntu that just installs cinnamon?

okay, so I'm working on GPU passthrough and I'm hitting a wall.

I damn well know the AMD FX 8350 supports IOMMU, and so should the UD3 I have it in. I'm getting the following.

[ 1.514195] AMD-Vi: Found IOMMU at 0000:00:00.2 cap 0x40
[ 20.609434] AMD IOMMUv2 driver by Joerg Roedel <[email protected]>
[ 20.609438] AMD IOMMUv2 functionality not available on this system

I've been reading that I need to blacklist some sort of module, because it loads AMD-V before AMD-Vi or something. It lists the virtualization as "AMD-V" when I check up on the CPU info, so I think something's botched.

Third party repos keep closing one after the other, OBS is mediocre at best, there are much fewer packages than for other distros, and recently, their custom patches have done nothing but jeopardize stability.

Thoughts about CentOS as a personal use OS.
>>
>>56539944
Core Arch is fine, albeit very thin. Issues come with AUR, it's an essential repo for basic usage and it's user controlled..
>>
>>56540020
It's a fair criticism, but you can just stick to manually using github yourself if it's that big of a deal.

It's no different than giving yourself a clusterfuck of PPA's imo, because not apt nor pacman will save you from dependency hell at that point.
>>

pacman -S xo <tab>

Lots of things. Unnethack doesn't install with files in the right place, nethack segfaults if name=player (among many other conditions), nethack4 doesn't even build at all, KDE keeps crashing, grub entries broke after an update once, mate currently can't be installed because pre-gtk3 packages thereof are gone but not all the core packages seem to be available for gtk3 yet according to pacman and yaourt like, and X keeps breaking.
>>
>>56540005
The installer was closing on me partway through each time I tried
I just figured out what options to s elect and went through them quickly. I think it was because of scratches on the disk or something.

At that point Gentoo is a much better choice.
Debian's strength comes from the repos and packaging rules. Reproducible builds are possible because of that "re-packaging" or unifying effort.
>>
>>56540118
You were merely very lucky with arch, but I can confirm that debian stable is only stable in the sense it never changes (being that it's conatantly broken)

You sure about that? When was the last time you tried?
>nethack segfaults
I have a hard time believing that's an arch problem then
>nethack4 doesn't build
looks to be fixed in the most recent beta out. (I can't test I'm on Windows right now)
>grub entries broke
then fix them? I can't fathom it being hard. I keep a USB around just in case because Windows 10 has broken my boots more than once.
>mate-gtk3 broken packages
bullshit. I had reinstalled GTK2 MATE right before to check something. The only thing I Know of missing right now is mate-menu, and it just pushed me to update to mate-gtk3. (It's a lot better anyways.)
>KDE keeps crashing
fancy that
>X keeps breaking
"werks on my machine." What do you mean by breaks? That's a pretty broad statement.

So I'll be straight up with you - you have three options. 1) realize that apt-get is fine, use aptitude, and git gud 2) realize that the AUR a shit anyways, but most of those issues seem either outdated or user-error or 3) install gentoo.

I personally think you've been WAY too hard on arch, and considering that what you want is pretty much arch on debian, you're in a pinch unless you install gentoo.

>>56540118
Fuck if I know. I've been using arch for a while now and it's the only distro that "just werks" for me without bullshit. I don't have to play the "oh well I guess I need to fuck with apt-pinning!" game with it, or any stupid bullshit.

Granted I was using KDE through most of my time on debian so I'm sure that accounts for some of it, but fuck me main. I think it's just because the community of arch are the biggest pretentious dicks in the linux community.

Anyone ever bought stickers from https://www.unixstickers.com ?

I was thinking of buying a transparent border one of the Debian logo
>>
Can anyone here help me?

I just put together a new rig, put windows 7 on it in a small partition, and then installed manjaro on the remainder. I followed the newbie instructions, it put the boot loader on the MBR.

Now, I power on the machine, and get black output. My monitor detects output but it's solid black. I can't even access the BIOS. What could have possibly happened? I can't live boot either.

It's a GTX 1060 on a z170 motherboard, and my hdmi is plugged into the 1060. There is no output on the motherboard HDMI.

children's ego's don't get inflated by bumper stickers. if anything, being the type of parent that throws away "the parent of an AMAZING kid!" bumper stickers the school gives out in fear of their child becoming egotistical general a sociopath. sociopaths feel no guilt, and they're more likely to be that way because their parents were cold and so they have resentment to the world for not nurturing them
