Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

Funtoo! It's easier to install than gentoo and provides all the benefits with less of the hassle.

It's similar to install but the stage3 are more up to date out of the box, so you don't have to recompile your whole system to use the newer packages. It also comes with a debian kernel out of the box, that is already compiled. You can change that later (or even right away) but it's great to get started with. Once you use portage you'll never want to go back to lesser package managers.

Anyone use opensuse tumbleweed? Having a rolling release system with automated testing seems like a comfy medium between typical bleeding edge and relative stability.

Considering I could just rollback with filesystem snapshots in BTRFS, is tumbleweed a meme or is it really a good place to be? Coming from Debian Unstable mostly, I don't like Arch and I don't have time for Gentoo anymore.

Is it possible to install gentoo with Linux Mint Live CD? It says you can on this forum thread (https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-935992-start-0.html). I'm considering it because my laptop does not have an ethernet port and the gentoo livecd does not seem to have the right wireless driver. I know mint works on it (driver and all) because I currently have mint installed on it.

Windows 8 has this thing where if on a touch screen you select a text field the current window resize to half the screen and a keyboard appears on the screen. it disappear once you deselect the text filed.

Some anon told me a while ago how to use find to batch-convert a bunch of files with ffmpeg. I tried it, it worked, I was happy.
Now I need to do the same again but I can't figure out anymore how to do it; I didn't take a screenshot, the man page helped a bit but I still can't get it to work and I couldn't find a solution online so far, either.

Can anyone help? I tried:
~$ cd /tmp
/tmp$ find . -maxdepth 0 -name track -type f -exec ffmpeg -i '{}' -vn -sn -c:a libvorbis -c:a libvorbis -b:a 320K -vbr on "./{}.ogg" \;

but nothing happens when I run it. No stdout, no errors, nothing.

you do realize icecat is just outdated firefox with a different logo and a couple preloaded extensions (outdated ones at that). it's better to use a hardened firefox-esr with custom extensions. icecat was created from a rebranding issue that has been resolved, it's not even available on most popular distros anymore. placebo at best.

I got this old pentium computer and I'm attempting to install Arch on it.
Apparently it doesn't support booting from a usb device and I don't have a cdrom drive, so I need to do a network boot.
I thought I needed a netboot image (ipxe.pxe or ipxe.lkrn), but on the wiki page for PXE they don't mention those images, but apparently I just need need the regular ISO.

both wrong. you can match all of icecats default setting by editing firefox's about:config. there is nothing special built into the code, it's all settings that can be changed on any version of firefox. even icecat doesn't cover everything out of the box and needs further hardening if you really want to be secure. pocket is also disabled on firefox-esr, as well as many other privacy evading features. it acually has more secure defaults than icecat if you really look at it. esr is not the same as normal firefox, do your research. icecat is outdated and lacks support. when i say it's not available on most distros, i mean package manager, because it's been replaced with firefox-esr. it's still available on void, but it's losing support. don't kid yourself, icecat is about as secure as chrome.

The man page for bash says it reads ~/.bash_profile first

> When bash is invoked as an interactive login shell, or as a non-interactive shell with the --login option, it first reads and executes commands from the file /etc/profile, if that file exists. After reading that file, it looks for ~/.bash_profile, ~/.bash_login, and ~/.profile, in that order, and reads and executes commands from the first one that exists and is readable. The --noprofile option may be used when the shell is started to inhibit this behavior.

why? I thought .profile was read first.

-rw-rw-r-- 1 kkb kkb 4 Sep 10 02:16 234.txt
-rw-rw-r-- 1 kkb kkb 8 Sep 10 02:16 abc

... and I can replace it with something else:
kkb@xubuntu:/tmp/test$ ll
total 20
drwxrwxr-x 2 kkb kkb 4096 Sep 10 02:19 ./
drwxrwxrwt 5 root root 4096 Sep 10 02:17 ../

kkb@xubuntu:/tmp/test$ for file in *abc*; do mv "${file}" "${file/abc/def}"; done
kkb@xubuntu:/tmp/test$ ll

drwxrwxr-x 2 kkb kkb 4096 Sep 10 02:20 ./
drwxrwxrwt 5 root root 4096 Sep 10 02:17 ../

-rw-rw-r-- 1 kkb kkb 4 Sep 10 02:16 def234.txt
-rw-rw-r-- 1 kkb kkb 8 Sep 10 02:16 defabc

Questions:

Basically abcabc should have an empty filename in the first example and turn into defdef in the second one.

My bash is using more or something for completions so if the list if longer than the screen then I have to press enter to see more of the list, it shows this at the bottom --More--. How can I change this so tab or even arrows scroll the completions?

I'm also looking for a way to do this with bash instead of zsh. With zsh I had this:
zstyle ':completion:*:*:kill:*:processes' list-colors '=(#b) #([0-9]#)*=0=01;31'

So, down to business. I have Debian stretch installed with KDE5. What are some cool things to install? Bells and whistles is fine but I'm looking for things to improve usability over everything else. Bonus points for weird stuff that adds features I didn't know I needed. I already have basics like cmus, pinta, firecucks, etc installed.

HARD MODE: Please name the newest macbook that runs mavericks and has good GNU/Linux and alternative boot manager support. I need it for the battery life (7-8 hours on a charge but I can live with 6) as well as for Xcode. Mavericks because it's the least gay but usable OSX version out right now.

Thanks FGLT.

If you had a reason to install it over anything else, then yes. Absolutely. I was tired of some of the shit ubuntu gave me, and I was just not jiving with ubuntu. I decided to install it because "why not, I'll at least learn a few things even it's unstable as hell." That was back earlier in the year. Here I am now, not a single thing has broken on me. It's easy to use after you install everything you want, because pacman is just user friendly as fuck. I don't have to dick around with a thousand ppas, because everything is at my fingertips with AUR. I can keep all my packages up to date, and if I'm worried about something breaking, I can just freeze it and read changelogs. (I never do though) I never have to raise a fucking finger to do anything. No more "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" causing something to be borked on reboot.

I don't understand the time sink meme now that I've been using it. The only timesink for me was because 1)broadcom is a piece of shit , but more importantly 2) I didn't bother organizing my sources.list so downloads took forever.

It might not be for you, but it's worth a shot. Just don't get involved "in the community" because they are all shitters.

1)Connect to a wired connection and install (or if you have a wireless dongle, try it.)

Broadcom is kind of shit with Linux, and debian nor arch don't include it by default, so if you can't figure it out, while everyone else is memeing, I do believe you would be just fine with an ubuntu flavor.

I'm attempting to install Arch via network boot using dnsmasq (I'm following this guide: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PXE).
I manage to boot, I get the install screen, but when I select 'Boot Arch Linux (i686) (HTTP)' I get an error (pic related).
I tried to ping google.com and then this google IP address, 5.22.190.40, as you can see in the picture.
My dnsmasq.conf is exactly the same as in the guide, with the exception of dhcp-range which I have adjusted to include my client IP address.

I'm running Debian 8.5 on my server computer.

Can anyone please help me with this?

Is this the future we want?

Seems like a problem in the /etc/resolv.conf?
>>
>>56524065
The DNS server addresses in resolv.conf are fine and I think that dnsmasq should look in that file for DNS servers by default.
I thought that maybe Debian has a firewall blocking port 80, but I that doesn't explain why I can't ping google.
>>
I just noticed, here >>56523902 in the picture it says

89.216.1.40

*buntus are made by a company that activly destorys the linux community by selling ubuntu as just ubuntu, porting it to windows 10, shilling proprietary software and with the amazon lense they were the first who brought spyware into linux

bash a GNU package, it's not really a new thing that bash works in windows
>>
>>56525000
Well you can actually run full Ubuntu with all linux programs in Windows 10, not bash only. An anon 2 threads ago posted a screenshot.

So what 10 commands?

Newbs are too embarassed to post scots of their poorly riced Ubuntu. Debian autists are few in number, but constantly remind us of their presence. At one point there were 2-3 of them who simply jerked their shit 24/7 for weeks on end. No idea what that was about.

But yeah, there are non-ubuntu and non-arch users here, but Ubuntu and Arch are far and away the most used. Misc. other distros are probably fighting for the last 10% of the pie, if that.

jesus fuck you are dense.
i'm not that guy. i was just saying pacman -Syu to be a smart ass. it's 10 characters, implying it's the only 10 commands you need to install arch. of course you need more, but i was trying to be funny. which i failed at, and you're too dumb to pick up on it. just forget i said anything.

Linux newfa/g/ here. Confirming this. I never post screens because i'm using Ubuntu/Unity defaults. I tried Arch and ricing but I am too lazy to keep a rolling desktop stable.

Take it easy anon. Don't tweak your distro too much and move on with your usual tasks

I have become extremely comfy with Ubuntu/Unity default settings. Even changing the background makes me uncomfortable now. I need that warm pink glow of acceptance.

Most people use the browser, instead of setting up shortcuts

That's not much of a bar to set. Most people don't use linux. Most people don't browse /g/ on a Friday night.

I didn't hide anything anon, I installed an addon. That's it.

Yeah for getting rid of all menu bars - which most non-autistic browsers ship with by default

Why? It's quicker and easier to use than using the mouse.

I own exactly seven shirts that I wash weekly and wear them in the same order every week. I also wear one pair of khakis to work all year round until they tear because I hate deciding which pants to wear to work.

Pretty bad desu. I want off this autism.

The only thing keeping me away from Linux is the fact that it's so damn difficult to install LaTex.
I tired it a few months ago and there were so many fucking steps and errors I just gave up and came back to windows.

Any one care to give an advice? Keep in mind I am a physicist pleb. The only thing I know how to do is sudo-apt get install.

Thank you!

why is debian considered a more advanced distro? what makes it so much harder than ubuntu. also how easy are nvidia drivers to install in debian. apparently on manjaro its one command to get them going?
