I upgraded to W10 recently (PC that is only used to play gaymes and little else, don't meme about it), and it fucked up my boot, and I have no clue why. I can only get it to boot if I hold F8 to prompt the boot menu and manually select the disk where Windows is installed, otherwise it leads me to a screen that says my installation is corrupt, mentioning winload.exe.

I tried googling around, which led me to trying to repair it by using bootrec.exe in Recovery, but when I do so, the commands tell me that I don't have any partition with Windows installed, therefore doing nothing.

Additional info that might be relevant, while in Windows, it always shows one of my 2 disks as an external disk, but only one or the other, never both. (SSD with Windows on it, HDD without).

Anyone ever experienced anything like this? Shit's really fucking weird.

I believe I'm still missing a few.

If i uninstall windows 7 and install windows 10, will it come with the updates and drivers or will I have to install some of that shit too.

Some examples of the updates I'm talking about is that emoji update thing where I could see the emoji text rather than a box.

I use my laptop alot, but I also use it in a office type environment daily too. To the point where I probably use the equivalent of two full battery charges per day. In terms of increasing longevity am I better off leaving it plugged in to the charger whenever possible, or letting the battery run down and only plugging it in when it needs charge? I'm guessing if I let it run down I should only let it get to around 20% before charging right?

defrag, ccleaner to mop up any random files. use ccleaner to go through and uninstall any and all programs you don't need or use any more. run ccleaner again to clear up aything maybe left behind. then use the tool to clear up the registry.

Check you windows startup options and disable anything from starting on boot that you don't need. check you HDD to make sure it's not near capacity too. delete shit if it is.

After a multi purpose laptop. Would be nice if I can run win 7 on it too.

It should have an ssd or i should be able to put ny own ssd in it I already have.

I'd like to do some gaming. Not too hard core or high end but should be at least playable.

Multi purpose for work / travel. (Don't need a large screen can use monitor at home) so lightweight would be handy.

Will run Photoshop and Adobe suite on it too.

Some casual gaming of the newer stuff (Intel HD won't cut it).

Suggestions?

So I've heard about CPU transistors reaching a size limit and the amount they can fit on a chip, and it makes me wonder: what's stopping them from just making the chips bigger?

>Why can't I write a 10 hour 500mb audio file to a 700mb audio disk?
because you don't understand how CDs work
the red book/audio cd/CDDA standard defines exactly what the format of the audio is, and how it's stored
that format is raw, uncompressed PCM at a specific bit depth and sample rate
this means the amount of audio in real time is fixed from the beginning

just the fact that you said "700mb audio disk" tells me everything, "700mb" is only applicable to (mode1) CD-ROM, cd-rom and cd-audio are /different standards/ which simply use the same physical media

you can fit arbitrary compressed audio on a cd, but unless it meets the standard, it won't play back in standard players properly

all i should do is youtube-l -cit youtubeplaylist
however it does not always seem to download the videos and when it does it suffixes a weird hash at the end of the filename. also id like to put numbering in front of the video corresponding to the number in the playlist.

tl:dr, want to use youtube-dl but its not always reliable and adds a weird has at the end of the filename

Total CPU Newbie here.

Tired of the console bullshit and looking to get into PC gaming.... eventually. For the moment though I am looking for a low end gaming laptop. Something that can run last gen games - Borderlands 2, Arkham City, Dragon Age Origins, Portal 2, Half Life 2, Dead Space Trilogy, Mass Effect Trilogy, Saints Rows 3, ect halfway decently.

A friend recommended the Lenovo - Flex 4 1470.... but I'm not so sure. Thoughts/opinions?

I just need to do college stuff/shitpost/make and play 2d indie games/emulators etc.
How do I find out if it can run stuff like directx?
A lot of 2d indie games seem to have all sorts of dumb unnecessary graphics requirements these days that keeps my old acer aspire from running them, and I don't want those issues.
The price seems so great I almost want to just try it, but amazon only accepts returns if it's broken or defective (or unopened) and I don't want to have a $160 paperweight so I figured I'd ask first.
>>
>>56188366
i haven't had any issues with playlist downloading
you can change how the filenames are formatted, here's what i use;
-o "[%(upload_date)s] %(title)s (%(id)s).%(ext)s"

which comes out like;
"[20130519] mitch murder - mirage (BuHt0xSbru8).m4a"
i personally like having the ID in the name, but you can omit "(%(id)s)" if you prefer
>>
>>56188384
Don't get that.
You'll want a laptop with a 960m gpu or better.
The one you linked doesn't even have a gpu, it uses the cpu to process graphics which is significantly less capable.
Just search around on amazon/newegg etc for machines with nvidia cards and when in doubt about a specific gpu look at notebookcheck.com
Take their page on the 960m for example
http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-960M.138006.0.html
Scroll down and it shows you gaming bemchmarks, click the fps numbers to see the other specs of the machine they tested with, then compare that to the machine you're looking at.

>>
>>56186704
Yeah, but I'm not going to be buying for a long time.

If I got the current socket now when the next one is so close, I'd be getting a bad deal.

Besides, Intel only updates their Xeon sockets after the second generation of CPUs for it is released.

I should be fine two years after the purchase, and years afterwards, the price of chips will fall and I can get the top-of-the-line stuff that used to cost upwards of a grand for a hundred bucks for two matching CPUs.

I have zero work experience apart from my 3 month internship in a bank's IT department where we just ended up doing troubleshooting and cleaning computers. I have some understanding of VB.Net and C/C++ but I haven't coded in so long so I am very rusty. I know I should've used that time to learn Java or something but I had to grapple with crippling depression and wanting to kill myself.
>>
>>56189044
Yes, but only the older models. The new ones look like shit. If you're looking to buy a laptop, check out the thinkpad general. They're pretty cheap, comes in a lot of sizes for your preference, and are pretty good hardware-wise. Definitely the best laptops you can get for your buck. Just got mine few days ago
>>

what extra cable?
tv connects to internet via wifi or ethernet and to cable via co-axial
HDMI for bluray
>>

that's one setup.
now imagine you have a set top box you get the signal from which has an ethernet connection.
so you only have one ethernet cable to the set top box instead of a second one to the TV as well.

How exactly do those websites that offer supposedly original serial keys for cheap actually work? I mean, if some vidya is 50$ on Steam and 10$ on a site like G2A, what's the deal there? Do they hack Steam and steal those keys or what?
>>
>>56190193
they pretend to be a reviewer and beg for some keys from the developer in exchange for a good review.
often you get more than one key to giveaway to friends and other reviewers to spread the word about the game.

sometimes it's just stolen credit cards, you buy a key and sell it before it gets disabled.
though most developers don't disable keys for that exact reason it would only hit the guy who paid for it in good faith.
>>
>>56190193
Often the keys are acquired illegally through credit card fraud, but not directly by G2A themselves.
>>
>>56190193
Sometimes it's fraud, where they buy games and sell them on the marketplace as some form of money laundering.
Also, they'll take advantage of region pricing. By that I mean that let's say Russia's price for HL2 is equivalent to $20 but the actual American price is closer to $25. Then Russians would buy keys in bulk and sell them for $22.50
>>
>>56190234
Steam region locks keys now so regional pricing abuse isn't really as relevant.
>>
>>56190220
>>56190223
>>56190234
So if I buy a key from some chinks, would I be at risk of getting busted by Steam and having my entire account fucked up? I mean, they swear the keys are legit and work globally, and I know the place I'm looking to buy from has been around for many years, so it can't all be snake oil, right?
>>
>>56190278
I've never heard of steam doing anything to people's accounts who buy from the key resellers, but you are basically endorsing credit card fraud by using shady resellers.

I noticed when I tried to set it up with chromecast; I had to update it to get the Netflix app, but it said It couldn't verify the update, because I'm not connected to the intenet, even thought I clearly were. I then proceeded to update the iOS version via iTunes with computer. Now it can't stream anything, Netflix doesn't even show the Chromecast icon, and in youtube it just shuts the casting screen off immediately. Must be something to do between the modem and iPad? The signal drops from 1 bar to full bars alot, but never disconnects. Also I have reset the networking settings on iPad and restarted it multiple times. What do?

I have a USB and a Disk with 8.1 on it but can't boot from either of them
Some sources say I have to go to the UEFI Settings via advanced options in Windows 10, but there is no option to for them there as you can see in that picture

Other sources say I can go to BIOS and boot from CD or USB but there is no option for that either
When I enter BIOS I am completely missing options that are in the pic related
My don't have any options to boot from CD or USB I could only set the boot priority of Optical Drive, Hard Disk, and External Drive and changing those around seemed to do nothing

I can take pictures of my BIOS if anyone is actually willing to help

It's hard to distinguish if they are intentionally making it hard or just not giving a shit about their older system. But they've been switching to cumulative updates, and once you're current you shouldn't have any problems. The main annoyance is that starting in the fall they're switching to an update system "inspired by" win10 by only offering a single update every month (no more choosing individual KBs).

Anyway the following updates should get you over the hump:

support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3138612
microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=47351
support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3179573

Aside from the eternal "checking for updates" most update related issues can be fixed with these tools:

2-1 tablets are really limited, but is the best option you have for something new in the $200 range.

2-4GB RAM and an Atom CPU that werks with 32-64GB storage, some come with a 500GB inside the keyboard.
But the average battery is 8-10 hours.
You cant change the eMMC that comes with the tablet, you cant increase the RAM, cant add another HDD or replace it, etc.

And this is why everyone will tell you, get a used thinkpad.

Actually it's that when you have a windows 7 install that hasn't received the new update clients they've been releasing over the last year, windows just can't sync with microsoft's current update system. Also if you're getting most of your post-SP1 updates for the first time and you don't have the current month's 'update rollup' then the initial update tends to take several hours.

I only plan to use it when I'm out since I've got a nice desktop that's why I don't care about storage, speed and battery life (both to an extent), or anything else really. Thanks for everything!

I've never had a smart phone but am about to come around to being able to afford one soon; if I went out to some local store and grabbed some smart normie phone which are the best options to look for? I'm just kind of looking for something basic-but-not-shit to get a handle on 'em before I look to replace it with anything super quality.

Is HDMI 2.0 the standard in laptops these days? I can find no info regardin the HDMI version on any laptop anywhere. It just says "HDMI" under specifications on every single one.

Thinking of buying a laptop with Intel HD520 and a 1080p screen and hook it up to a 1200p screen. No reason it wouldn't work in this day and age, right?

Open it and clean it up. Gunked up fans run louder. Dirty surfaces dissipate less heat and dirty vents have a lower airflow, making fans run faster to mantain the same temperature.

Also check for mice, snakes, and roach nests.

Also replace thermal paste if older than two years, and a small tiny drop of WD40 in the fan bushings. Just from the outside, don't rip the fans open.

everything is clean, I blew it out yesterday. I have a noctua nh-d14 and a tri-x cooler on my gpu. I think I'll look at noctua fans, but I can't afford $30/fan. just replaced cpu paste as well

maybe I'll wd40/lube the fans

thanks
>>
>>56195901
If you have canned air or a compressor, try blowing it inside the fans first before wd-40'ing them up so you have a lower chance of them gunking up later.

WD40 ISN'T lubricant

it can help with squeaks, but you're better off using actually spray lubricant

That's the one they're looking at, but the processor looks pretty weak. He have to to have a screen around that size too.
>>
>>56184464
hmmm i feel like i should know this.

i'd guess it could be just different compression settings for whoever ripped the FLAC's. Could also be 96k vs 44.1k sample rate, or different media releases (CD/Vinyl/Web). I don't think you'd find this inconsistency with .WAV or .AIFF
>>
>>56196195
it doesn't, but I have a 1440p monitor now and wouldn't mind a bit more power

and I can potentially help my brother out (since a 290 is almost the same as a 480, but in Canada a 480 is over $350)
>>
>>56195692
Do you use any fan control software to make sure they're not going at 100% at all time?
>>
>>56196291
but what you will buy will give you very little boost... 390 is identical to 290 with bit more clocks on gpu and vram
and furies are limited by 4gb ram in the future, so not that great investment

but if you would be selling 290 for $100 and buying gtx1070 that I could understand

Tell dad to reconsider
dragging huge 17" inch notebook every single day in and out is not ideal. And work in front of it is too bleh meh...

ideal would be if he had docking station at work/home and bring only some small, light 13". Dock it at work, and keyboard, mouse, monitor, lan, charging,... all would come up and he would use it as regular PC. Then take it home and got docking for home too, or use it as small notebook there..

maybe even better would be sharing data between two PCs, it would be also backup and comfort

Annyway, HP got decent shit for price, but dont expect greatness... low brightness screen only visible in room, never outside, and shitty touchpad...

No ideia why i wrote MTS there, its actually the enterprise version, the one that is supposed to not have forced updates. When i do manage to close the specific svchost.exe task that consumes the internet, it get backs by itselfs after 15 minutes.

Are they compatible? I'm planning on buying an i3 6100 with a cheap mobo but I don't want to be forced to use win 10.
>>

Fully compatible, you might have problems with USB if your motherboard doesnt have USB 2.0 ports so you better have a PS2 keyboard around for the installation, everything else will work fine.
