I guess that would be search the file for the opening tag of the metadata and read until you encounter the closing tag for it

how could I view or fetch the contents of a url without having that actively open in my browser.
I'm not sure how to word this question properly.

For example, lets say I wanted to view a Forbes article. Forbes blocks me with that shitty welcome gateway, and I don't even have scripts or requests enabled either, but I know if I search for a specific article with google or another engine I see the url.

Is it bad to watch 720 on a 1080 resolution? I heard it was bad for some reason. Should I just stick with 1080 now
>>
>>56179125
it won't be as sharp, but it isn't that bad. The best way to go is if there is a whole number ratio between the pixels (1080p and 4K, for example).
>>
>>56179125
It's not bad, seeing it on a 720 screen or a 1080 screen doesn't make a difference, since the source material is the same.
Some writings might be unreadable depending on size and font, but if you want to watch a movie it's ok.

According to google it has a Mini Display Port, you might have to find a mini display to "whatever your other device has" adapter.

It doesn't make a huge difference, but charging at 10% is a safepoint to not let your laptop die on you while you do something.
If you are interested in ways to preserve battery life, i'd suggest turning monitor brightness down and avoid seeing videos with very high resolution, as those may require a fair bit of processing power., depending on specs.

i fucked up /g/

I moved my desktop and when I started it up in my new place, it worked fine. Then after a while, it shut itself off. So, I turned it back on, and it worked fine, but then shut itself off, and then refused to start.

I popped it open and discovered that the problem was that a zip tie had snapped and gotten caught in the CPU fan, preventing it from spinning. So I'd been rolling with no CPU fan, and it had been shutting itself off because it was too hot.

Did I permanently damage it? How stupid am I?

>Does it still boot at all?

I am posting this from it

I couldn't hear the fan because it's fucking hot in here and I have no AC, so I have like 4 desk fans pointing at me at all times.

it's now running at 30 C when it normally runs at like 20 C, but to my knowledge 30 C still isn't actually very hot.

So I guess it shut itself off before anything actually broke and all I need to do is go reapply the thermal paste.

I've been doing some research, and all I've really gotten is the model number of the power supply.

Siemens Nixdorf is now Wincor Nixdorf, and it's probably owned by Fujitsu, which has some manuals for it: http://support.ts.fujitsu.com/IndexDownload.asp?lng=COM

I haven't been able to find out what type of power connector it is, though.

It's probably proprietary.
>>
>>56181526

Pretty much anywhere else, they are generic fans, as you've said 140mm. It might have a 2 pin header unlike your motherboard which has 4 (for PWM) so you need either an adapter or a 2 pin fan.

In order from most important to least important:

Videocard, you have a really low end one.
Get a GTX 1060 or a RX 480.

A SSD, get a 850 EVO.

A Intel CPU+Motherboard.

Another 8GB stick.
>>
>>56181603
get a better monitor, 30hz is unbearable.

Other than that, it depends on the game. Your system in total sucks, but it should be able to play games on low settings.
>>
So I'm a poorfag living on a third world country and I want to play some vydia on my PC. I have a Intel Core 2 Quad Processor on a Asus P5K SE motherboard with 4GB of RAM. My GPU is really old, a NVIDIA 9600GT and of course it's not running new games.

Is it enough to just buy a new GPU? I don't care too much for playing on the highest settings, I'm really just interested on playing stuff like Dark Souls 3, GTAV,
Overmeme, Fallout IV
and Deus Ex Mankind Divided.
>>
>>56181636
>>56181603
Also a 60Hz monitor, but i doubt your current build can even run stuff past 30FPS.

Unless you are from brazil you can buy one easy.
>>
>>56181685
>>56181657
Also C2D is not enough for modern games, you would bottleneck even recent low end cards.

You need a low end I5 (I5-4460 or 6400) and a decent $300 videocard.
>>
>>56181657
Depends on your games my imperialism-wrecked-country-fellow. Simulation games need CPU, some other unoptimized AAA shit a lot of both but more GPU. Seize the level size, computing operations such as AI as variables but I say just change your GPU.

As for me? I don't play much besides CSGO, some Dark Souls and rFactor. An R7 360 was enough for me, which is about the same as a 750ti which can run your games at mid settings and modest resolutions.
>>
>>56181685
Oh well.

Yes I'm from this third world country.

I can get GPUs for like 70% of the price from a friend, but I still can't buy something crazy good. I'm just wondering if I need to upgrade anything else, I really have zero knowledge about motherboards/processors.

>Might be the female laptop connector, it might have sunk a bit into the case.
Im almost sure it isn't, since it makes no difference for the laptop where the bad contact is happening. I never bothered installing the proper audio drivers so it makes this switching sound, like when you move a 3.5 plug in the jack connector whenever I cut power. It doesn't when it does what im talking about, it just goes dim because dim screen is how I configured backlight on battery profiles; and then goes back without me moving anything.

Does Windows 7 log power events in the event viewer? Might have clues.
>>
>>56181752
750Ti was great, 4 years ago, and still as a low end card because it was $100 and only used the PCIe slot for power.
This days it got replaced by the GTX 950 and RX 460.

Logicalincrements.com/monitors for screens.

How much you think it cost to get the tip of an audio jack unstuck from my phone?

Should I just get some wireless buds, or a bluetooth receiver for my m50x's?

So I have a little annoying GNU/Linux problem, heavy io seems to just slow everything to a crawl.

Extracting a large archive, adding a big torrent, moving a lot of files, etc.

Everytime I do something like that, the entire system basically freezes, but my cpu/ram usage during it is fine.

Any advice?

I'd do this. I honestly would. But I'm just too lazy to get used to a new OS that I'd have to learn. Also, I JUST installed windows 7 and I'm too lazy to learn and reinstall all these drivers that I've had trouble finding.

Because of the way most dedicated CD players are built, they're built to read data encoded in a certain way that dates to the 80's when CD's were just for music and used a drastically different file format and encoding. If you have a CD player that's MP3 compatible (almost every CD player made after 2005 is) you can just burn the MP3 files as a data CD filled with music. This was a big thing in the early 00's when only really expensive CD players could read MP3's off a CD. When you use your software to burn a Music CD it's converting what ever file type the songs were in to a different file type.

Probably sounds like a retarded question, but is there a way to download files from websites without using the browsers built-in downloader? My internet isn't stable so the downloads always end up failing and restarting from the beginning.

What I'm really looking for is a program that works similarly to a torrenting program, with features such as pausing, stopping, limiting downloads and management of downloads in general.

Why are LGA 1151 mobos so expensive? What would I gain from upgrading to that and getting an i7 6700k instead of keeping my z97 and getting an i7 4790k instead?

Looking for something called a download manager and there are plenty of them. A lot of them are dedicated programs but some come as plugins to web browsers. A lot of them are sketchy adware like most popular torrent clients so look for FOSS ones. DownloadThemAll is one of the best if you use Firefox.

it won't transcode video or audio, but it might convert subtitles and/or strip attachments
ffmpeg -i video.mkv -c copy -map 0 video.mp4

this sets all "codecs" to copy, and map ensure everything, including attachments are muxed into the new file (well, everything that the target format supports, mp4 supports less than mkv does)
>>
>>56187353
thanks, saving this. most of my files have maybe 1 extra audio track, and the occasional extra huehue or german subtitles. what other attachments can there be?
>>
>>56187379
additional audio tracks and subtitles aren't attachments
most common type i run into is fonts
    Stream #0:0: Video: hevc (Main), yuv420p(tv), 1280x720 [SAR 1:1 DAR 16:9], 23.81 fps, 23.81 tbr, 1k tbn, 23.81 tbc (default) (forced)
Stream #0:1: Audio: opus, 48000 Hz, stereo, fltp (default) (forced)
Stream #0:2: Subtitle: ass (default) (forced)
Stream #0:3: Attachment: ttf

notice stream 3 is a "ttf" file, which is a TrueType Font

Absolutely nothing, except possible efficiency and maybe more instruction sets.
>>
>>56186331
For multi-core performance, you should be fine.

For single-core performance, you'd do maybe 80% as well as a comparable Intel chip.

If you're planning on running workstation applications; don't.

Overall, your system should perform admirably.

Linux would be absolutely fine for your setup, and yes, viable.
