Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I'm looking for a thinkpad for my parents as a media player for their TV so they can watch 1080p movies. Would the X201 be fast enough? I have the T420s and that one would definitely work but it's maybe a bit too expensive for just a media player.
Any other models that would do the job?

Which Thinkpads reject Third party batteries? And is there a way to circumvent this?
>>
>>56024828
Why don't you just buy a Raspberry Pi, install Kodi on it and use any shit you have around as a remote terminal? Would cost far less, be less of a mess and you can save the money on both hardware and electricity bill to buy a Thinkpad for comfy activities.
>>
>>56025808
I think beginning with the **20 series.
And no, just buy genuine parts, third party parts for the recent models won't likely last a year, so it's not worth the investment.

>came with a hard drive that's pretty much broken above the 60gb mark
>it had two shitty 2gb RAM modules inside, one of which caused errors in memtest occasionally
>it had a supervisor password

I recently got around to removing the password using some trick and I'm ready to invest some money in it. An SSD and some RAM are due. I'm thinking about getting a T420 keyboard for it, is it really worth it? Also, how difficult is it to connect an external GPU to it?
>>
>>56026861
Get an 850 evo and 8 gigs of ram should be sufficient.

T420 keyboard is nice if you can get all the buttons working, but my understanding is this requires flashing a custom BIOS, and the t430 keyboard's only real shortcoming is the lack of 7 row layout

Egpu setup is possible but you will have to connect to an external monitor.
>>
>>56026966
Thanks for the suggestions anon, I don't think I'll mess with the keyboard as it doesn't seem to offer much benefits.
Also, what is the downside of using a cheaper SSD? I'm a poorfag and I'd rather choose the least expensive option.

**30 series rejects both third party batteries AND GENUINE LENOVO BATTERIES FROM THE PREVIOUS **20 GENERATION.

You can bypass this with the battery auth embedded controller fix.

Though this patch is primarily concerned with the **30 to **20 keyboard swap, you can use the same methodology to only fix the battery auth if you want (in fact, the battery patch came first and allowed for the keyboard fixes).

Readme here:
https://github.com/hamishcoleman/thinkpad-ec/blob/master/README

After you clone the github repo, before patching between steps 6 and 7, rename
>006_battery_validate.patch.OFF
to
>006_battery_validate.patch
>and rename the other 5 preceding patches to .patch.OFF as they are concerned with the keyboard swap. That leaves the only valid .patch file to be the one concerning battery validation.

Clearly underage - I stopped online gaming because it began to take too much of my time. It pulls you in due to the highly interactive and fast paced elements of it.
Offline gaming? Pause at any time.

Now, since online gaming didn't bode well for me, I need to project my personal and singular experiences onto others:

You can't be productive and well-balanced if you play video games online. Only playing games offline is acceptable - particularly older ones that are emulated.

I spend 30 minutes every day MAX on gaming. To your information I use linux on all my machines in my company, including servers and embedded devices.
>You can't be productive and well-balanced if you play video games online.

>>

That's the issue, there's also eq10q which would be perfect but they're meant as plugins for DAWs, not for general usage like watching movies/youtube/etc.

If i find one i'm migrating to Ganoo/Linux asap.

That's not my first thinkpad, you know. I owned (and sold) already almost all thinkpads between x60 and W530, so I got some experience with them, familia.

That's the smallest thinkpad than can handle both quad core CPU (with turbo enabled) and overclocked dGPU. This makes it a decent replacement for desktop computer for a normie interested in thinkpads. Enough?

I'm just not seeing why you'd favor it over a W530. Owning both a W520 and T420 myself, the T420 feels like a huge downgrade in quality and the screen is unbearably awful. If it's a desktop replacement, why does it need to be small? The size difference is very minor anyway. I could understand if it were about the AC adapter, since the W520's is a real fucking monster brick, but didn't you post a while back about buying a 130W adapter since your quadcore and overclocked GPU pushed power usage beyond what a 90W could provide? So you've got a monster brick either way, and to shave off one inch of a laptop that lives its days as a desktop, you settle for inferior build quality, inferior GPU performance, and a vastly inferior screen.

Other "best Thinkpad" candidates have something unique about them that other models can't compare to. The T601F has a gorgeous 1600x1200 IPS display and a keyboard that even puts other Thinkpads to shame, while offering serviceable performance with a Penryn Core 2 Duo and the Advanced Dock for graphics. The W701ds has two fucking screens. The T420 is the undisputed king of price/performance ratio, even if everything else about it is pretty mediocre. Your jacked up T430, while I'm sure the performance is impressive and I'm even more impressed that you haven't burned your house down with it, isn't really much more than a homemade predecessor to the T440p.
>>
>>56031150
Considering the dankpads, I will have to go with the dankest alternative.

Because that's the only PC I own. I carry it a lot with me, so the smaller the better. Also fully specced T430: >>56029300 works just fine with 90W PSU. W530 requires 135W bigass power brick to power up almost the same components (except dGPU, which uses a lot more power than nvs)

Does anyone know how to get the x220 Forward/Backward keys to work in IntelliJ IDEs?

According to ThinkWiki, they should just werk, since they're mapped to alt-left/right by default.

But it looks like the IDE is pulling the usual Java special snowflake crap and is neither listening to the OS' signal, nor the key-event in general, so it cannot be mapped in the program itself either.

You shouldn't underestimate Core 2 Duo, I've found it more than sufficient for most tasks including 1080p video and a fair amount of video games. The GPUs haven't aged so well, definitely, but the Intel integrated ones do their simple job of driving the screen well enough. Fortunately, the Advanced Dock provides a solution, letting you use a modern desktop GPU with the old Thinkpad. Note that R7 240 hooked up to a machine that originally had a Radeon Mobility X1300.

I have to say, ive noticed thinkpads are clearly more reliable as far as structure and engineering goes, and they tend to not encounter as many loading issues, or boot loops of any kind
>>
>>56038400
t410, and t430 ones work well. But you will need rubber bumpers for it to slide in nicely.

Source: work on hundereds of thinkpads of various models.
>>
>>56039329
Unless I'm looking at these specifications wrong, I don't see that the R7 240 requires more power than the GTX 650 and I don't think the other T601F anon uses any kind of special additional PSU with the Advanced Dock. I don't really know shit about GPUs though so I may be completely off.
>>
>>56039400
the gt 650 requires external power (ie not power from the pcie slot)
which means that you will need a power supply and a think to start it automatically (you need to start the psu before every boot)
>>
>>56039427
Ah, the 6-pin connector. Got it now. Thanks for clarifying.
>>
>>56031171
>Your jacked up T430, while I'm sure the performance is impressive and I'm even more impressed that you haven't burned your house down with it, isn't really much more than a homemade predecessor to the T440p.
Not really.

T430 is a T420 with a new keyboard (which can be replaced) and new processor, everything else is the same. It's a hard upgrade over T420. No reason to use it over T430 now.
>>
>>56038182
Reading this I don't imagine it as wanting 51nb to grow but rather them growing new motherboards.
>>
>>56039049
>>56039395

The main thing I am concerned about is that most of the Caddys seem to not have the same shape as the lenovo t420 case. they are just straight with no bezel or whatever it's called. do they leave large gaps?
>>
>>56034574
Thanks for posting this. I'll benchmark some chargers too to see if this is a thing with X230.

>>56037781
I was planning on doing the mod but after trying out the keyboard on X230 it felt better to type on at over 300cpm compared to X220 and X201 I've had.

They say that there are different keyboard manufacturers for X220 keyboards and that some of them are very good but I'm not gonna drop 40€ to see if I get a good one.

What should I look for while buying ram for my T430? How can I be sure it will fit?

First time Thinkpad buyer here.
Bought a T420, haven't received it yet. It doesn't appear to have a visible finger print scanner, does it not have one?
Pic related, this one
>>
>>56040883
It doesn't.
>>
>>56040897
Damn. Ah well
>>
>>56040897
Is it possible to add one later?
>>
>>56040900
don't worry, they're crap.
>>
>>56040900
It's more of a show off feature, it doesn't really add anything to the memepad experience. I recently purchased a T430 with a fingerprint reader (it happened to have it), but previously I had a T61 without one, and I was also crushed that it didn't have it. Now that I have it, I don't really care.

>>56040914
Maybe if you replace the palm rest.
>>
>>56040883
There's no fingerprint scanner on that particular one. It's an optional feature and not all T420 have it.

>>56040914
Yes if you buy a palmrest with one. There should be a connector on the motherboard for connecting the reader.

>>56040855
>DDR3 PC3-12800 SODIMM 204-Pin 1600MHz
You can also use DDR3L or modules with higher clock as they will just downclock.
>>
>>56040924
>>56040928
Thanks friends. May add on later down the line
>>
>>56040928
Thank you!

By the way, is it possible to add a mSATA ssd to the T430?
>>
>>56039962
oh hard drive caddy
make sure you get one that specifically says "for t420 and it should fit just fine
>>56040855
anything ddr3 sodimm should work just fine.
at minimum get 1333 though.
>>56040883
not all t420s have one
also if you still have your recovery partition could you please make an iso out of it and send it to me?
>>56040945
yes, all xx20, and xx30 series should support msata ssd
>>
>>56040982
>also if you still have your recovery partition could you please make an iso out of it and send it to me?
I just bought it last night so I've yet to receive it.
If I can I'll do it when I get it and post ITT
>>
>>56041016
thank you so much
I have been hunting for a firewire driver for my w520 and t420 for a few days, and nothing seems to work.
I still don't get why lenovo doesn't have them on their site.
>>
>>56041029
yeah that seems odd. no problem
>>
Am I a pleb for keeping windows on my thinkpad?
I can't be bothered with the fuss of linux and I want to use photoshop mostly
>>
>>56041085
nah not really
it's only the turbo nerds that will make fun of you.
plus windows 10 is just a really solid OS.
the forced updates are annoying, but those only happen once a month at the absolute worst.
>>
>>56041085
>photoshop
>am I a pleb?
You shouldn't be asking this question, really.
>>
>>56041085
It's your laptop, what do you care what others think?
I kept the hdd with windows that came in mine and I ordered a caddy that is supposed to arrive next week to dual boot with my older linux HDD (I just use windows for gaming).
>>
>>56041102
Name a better piece of software for what it does than photoshop CS6
>>
>>56041138
None. But then, you shouldn't even be thinking about Linux. Unless you really have a reason to ditch Windows definitely, but then that would imply replacing Photoshop with GIMP, and that a pleb can't assume.
So, your question was senseless.
>>
>>56041246
Can't make any sense of this post
>>
>>56041278
You guys are running in crircles.

If you need windows and/or a particular piece of software, keep using it.

Hell, I have to keep a win partition because work requires me to go on skype from time to time and the web-app can't into group calls.

xx30 series support up to 1600MHz with the default BIOS so there is no reason to get slower than that. Faster memory helps with iGPU performance.

>>56041725
If you want both TrackPoint and numpad there is no other way to position them or it would be adaptive keyboard level of shit.
>>
>>56041758
yes, when the fuck have you ever used a number pad?
>>
>>56041776
You do realize this would mean a huge empty space on both sides of the keyboard, right?

I know I use it when it's available. When did an offcenter keyboard/touchpad get it the way of you using the laptop?
>>

that space can then be used for good speakers

When it ruined the aesthetics of my machine, which let's be honest here, is a part of the TP experience

Would a 15,4 retina lcd from macbook fit into t420 lid bezels? Just curious.

ever heard the speakers in the macbook pro 15"?
they aren't the loudest, but for a laptop they sound really good.

>>

you have obviously never compared them to a t420 or w520
the difference is huge, even compared to the w520 which has halfway decent speakers too

B. lying out of your ass

i just got my thinkpad

what do I have to do in terms of bios for example or checking some things or whatever before I remove the windows and start using it

its a x220 12.5 '' 2.7ghz 8gb ram
>>
>>56042188
press F12 to boot to your USB or whatever media you're using.

You shouldn't have to change anything in the BIOS
>>
>>56037941
Latitudes are better on paper but the build quality it shit. Their screen scratches easier, their hinges break easier, the plastic cracks easier.
>>
>>56042188
You could update the bios. Check your bios version then go to lenovo support and see if you have the newest version.

T440 vs Dell Latitude e7420 ?
Same price, both 256 SSD, both i5 4300U, both full HD (1600x900 on the thinkpad), and the Latitude has an intel HD 5000 while the thinkpad has a 4400 one.

T520, W520, T530, W530

They are just slightly bigger than T4**

You can mod **20 keyboard to **30 series. The chiclet keyboard is very good too except for the layout. **30 keyboard even has backlight while still having ThinkLight.

Jesus christ, the Win10 upgrade is taking long. Ever since 95% each percent takes around an hour or two. It's at 99% now, and has been for at least an hour.
