IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

And since the font is rather big I can comfortably lean back and still read everything.
Also I zoomed in in the browser. Everywhere else the font is much smaller, so a lot of text fits on the screen.

I need a bit of help, /tpg/.

I got a free x220 from my dad last week. I decided to slap an SSD onto it, so I got the cheapass ADATA SP550. But after I was done installing my OS on it I noticed that my x220 was unable to boot into the disk, despite the fact that the BIOS recognized the drive correctly.

What do? The first thing I wanted to do was boot into this thing: http://support.lenovo.com/uu/en/downloads/ds013805 but since x220 does not have an optical drive I don't want to burn it to a CD. I could not boot my USB of which I used dd to copy the provided bootable image.

Am I at least on the right direction? I even updated my BIOS, but things are refusing to work.
>>
>>56044342
Checked boot order?
I had to manually add "boot from USB" to the boot order menu since it only had my preinstalled SSD in it.
Search a little around in the UEFI settings, I'm sure you'll find what's wrong.
Just because it recognizes your SSD doesn't mean it's added into the boot order menu.
>>
>order x220
>arives in good condition
>procede to change the hard drive
>nitice the hdd rack is missing as well as 1 of the 2 rubber rails
is it a problem /g/ ?

>>
>>56044427
I'm not too sure what you are talking about, because you are kind of going back and forth with the USB and SSD stuff...

But if you meant that I should check my boot priorities (regardless of the boot targets being an SSD or USB) I'm pretty certain that's not it, because I not only changed the boot order in BIOS but also made it manually boot to USB at startup anyways.

Yeah sorry I'm not a native English speaker, and I translated a lot of German (poorly) to English.
But I meant exactly what you said.
I thought you might have not done it yet since it caught me by surprise, when I got my X220, that "boot from USB" was completely missing from the "boot priorities menu".

I've had no problem docking/undocking an X230 with Ubuntu. Everything works out of the box.

Works for me:
-undocking/docking while power is on
-undocking/docking while sleeping
-automatically putting on the docked display configuration
-optical drive
-usb peripherals
-ethernet
-power

What are these problems you talk of?
>>
>>56043720
I got a 9cell on my x220, mine claims to have six hours when fully charged but then delivers about four, still not bad for what I paid for the whole laptop. Are newegg batteries good?
>>
>>56044068
Dude, I been thinking about one of those, hows the performance. Hows the battery life.
>>
>>56045247
I have a genuine Lenovo battery. It claims anywhere between 6-10 hours fully loaded, and delivers anything inbetween depending on load.
My Uptime now is just over 2.5 hours with around 2 third of battery left, so I'll end somewhere between 7-8hours at same load.
Looks like your battery is shit m8.
>>
>>56045178
It's cobbled-together Debian testing with no DE. It wants to go to sleep during undocking and when I wake it up off the dock, it doesn't want to show the internal display. More cobbling is clearly required. I think I just need to do xrandrshit at a docking/undocking event. Same goes for switching off ethernet and switching on wifi.

Good to know a fully fleshed distro handles it though, I'll look at how Ubuntu does it. It just hasn't been annoying enough to deal with yet since it spends 99% of its time on the dock. As it stands, I've just been shutting it down before undocking.

tl;dr - disregard, I suck cocks

Actually I think it was worth the money.
I mean I could have bought one off of ebay for like 200€, but that would have come with a use battery of unknown quality, not refurbished, without any warranty, and probably with one of those shitty HDDs they used to slap into Thinkpads (this one came with a 250GB SSD).
So yeah, I think it was a good deal.

Just finished installing Arch on my X61 tablet, do I need to install drivers for the audio to work?
>>
>>56045656
You're right. Mine was $100 with shitty RAM 2GB, no HDD or caddy, no power supply, but did have 9 cell battery.

Within a week my touchpad start acting jerky and would stop the clit mouse from moving, replaced flex cable for touchpad, that didn't work, replaced touchpad its now working, touchpad was $7 and they sent me two. Power supply was 15 bucks and I think its original, should I buy the 90w kind??

So, next thing I'll buy for it is SSD MSATA, 8GB RAM and a new battery and will end up having as much in it as you do. Oh yeah got the moonrune keyboard, you actually never notice it until you need some symbol and you don't really know where it is.
>>
>>56045674
Send a message to the seller complaining that the HDD caddy is missing essential parts (the rubber rail) and you want either the part or 5€ back to buy one yourself. Say that you will give negative feedback otherwise. They'll probably give in to avoid negative feedback.

Whatever you do don't just give negative feedback without contacting the seller. It's very shitty to do as the seller might have made a mistake or maybe they didn't inspect the drive before selling.

You want to look for :

So i can buy this Thinkpad X230i (with Core i3 2370m) for 110 euros, the thing is a banger though and has suffer some damage. I still have an old case lying around from a regular X230, will this fit the X230i?

Configuration is not an issue. I've been using GNU for a year now and I dont usually whine about having to read technical stuff. I like it as a hobby.

But at BIOS level i dont know that much, and if there are some serious performance issues I can do nothing about, I would not take it (like, you can always dig into code but thats not an option for me right now)

I just wanted a computer for normie use, but, in freedom. And maybe explore deep computing concepts from time to time.

80+ on video playback seems a bit high but it varies depending on quality. Still, I'd repaste.

Crunchbang is based on Debian Wheezy and is dead. Crunchbang Plus Plus (#!++) and BunsenLabs are its successors. I run #!++ on two machines, one with testing repos, the other on stable. Both work good. Testing has broken minor things from time to time. It's just an opportunity to learn.

there is really not a lot of tweaking you would need to do at the BIOS level

There are problems with the dock if you use one fixes exist
Libreboot is actually easier to install than coreboot. You would have to hardware flash though which means having a few pieces of hardware

the one with the IPS panel
>>
>>56050174
Forgive me for asking a dumb question, but what do you mean "IPS panel"?
>>
>>56050243
there are two display technologies for that model

the IPS screen and the TN screen type

TN is the typical cheap panel you would see on garbage monitors and is really hard to work with, especially in outside conditions with strong light.

Once you use an IPS screen it's hard to ho back to TN.

I would consider the screen technology to be one of the biggest buying points of a laptop

How?

Also, stands to reason that somebody who bought the i7 went for the screen upgrade too. But it's just that, an assumption.
>>
>>56050322
not sure about labeling scheme for them

screen tech might be differentiated by model number

IPS will be the more expensive one

on the website you are looking on, they seem to mention IPS explicitly in the LCD features list so I guess every other listing is the regular TN

I count with that, and its part of the perks of playing around with libreboot.

What worries me, is having to play around with parameters, or actual code, beyond what it is available on tutorials. (Like i had to do with arch)

So even with libreboot, it will be a good normie computer, isnt it?

>>56050558
>How do I check the condition, exactly?
on shitdows there should be a power management util directly from lelnovo that generates a battery stats report
On GNU/Linux it would be upower or tlp
>>56050564
>So even with libreboot, it will be a good normie computer, isnt it?
No. Libreboot kind of takes it too far out of the realm of a regular computer. You don't really have to mess with Libreboot to get it working like Coreboot though. The install steps are simple by design (if a bit obscure, on the official webpage). You have precompiled ROMs for different SPI chips. All you have to do is connect and flash with the utilities. There is a decent recently made guide that tries to make walk the user through the flashing process as much as possible.
>>
>>56050558
>How do I check the condition, exactly?
Depends on your OS. If you're on Windows, Lenovo has some utility for it. On Linux, something about grep and upower. You can google this yourself.

>I hope the battery isn't dead, but it's better than the mobo being broken in some way I guess
Honestly, it's not very likely to be your mobo. It's possible, but get the battery checked first.

This or a X230 Tablet? I want a convertible but the 1366x768 resolution is a turn off.
>>
>>56052113
I'd go with the X230 Tablet personally. Though T904 is better specced, it is a consumer model and won't be built to the same standard.

You shouldn't be turned off that much by 1366x768 at this screen size. The T904 may have a 2560x1440 panel, but you're going to be scaling everything up to the point that it's just glorified 1280x720 anyway.
If you want higher resolution for the purpose of more screen real estate, look into spending some more for a 14" convertible like the X1 Yoga or similar.

well, it's supposed to read/write to smartcards and that's what I wanted it for but I guess there is some reason that SLE4443 models don't get properly recognized (despite the supposed ISO 7816 compatibility claimed by the reader and the card)

Pssh, the 940mx heating up is the least of your worries, thing runs at 70C tops in my experience.

I am sorry if this sounds like nitpicking but I don't like the new power connector thing. I'd have preferred it stay the same as the old one so I could use the T430 connector.

>>
>>56056982
depends on how much they are going for and for what specs
if it's hd 3000 and 1366x768 then $150 max
if its hd 3000 + nvs and 1600x900 then 200-220 max.
you are generally much better off not getting a refub though.
the best deals are usually on ones with no ram/hdd. then getting an ssd (which you should be doing anyways) and then 8 or 16 gigs of ram

Seems to me you, like so many others, don't quite get why we like Thinkpads, Elitebooks and Latitudes. It's not the specs, it's the build quality and ease of maintenance. Basically read OP to see why.

I need a new laptop for school
>Budget 250$
>Need it within the week or less
>Normal school tasks
>Maybe a little vidya
>Quake live, maybe autism craft if I get bored
>Probably take a crack at higher end games like insurgency, total war Rome 2, CS:GO, Red orchestra
So I know most of the 13" laptops are out and I'd have to go with a 15" one

I don't want to be messing around with much or do upgrades. I want it working out of the box with very little configuring. I won't have time to do that anyway because I'll be opening it in the dorm.

I really like it. Does everything I need flawlessly and the keyboard is really nice (i had a T410 that arguably had a better kb though). The screen is okay and the cpu and gpu are a big step up from the older t410 model i had.

Not really, certain ssd are faster than others, but all depends on how much you want to spend, but any is better than an hdd if on a budget. As far as ram just make sure it's ddr3 sodimm. Frequency and clock speed will vary from budget,

Depends on how much you're paying for it. The price for one. I shouldn't have spent $1k on it. Sort of have a buyer's remorse for that.

I also tell myself I'd take my computer to more places if it was smaller and cheaper. It is mostly a desktop replacement computer for me. I guess I could have just bought a cheaper lappy and a desktop so I could leave the desktop on overnight and stuff because this thing isn't built to dissipate heat nearly as well as I thought it was... leaving it on overnight causes it to heat up.

Also I haven't figured out a way to regulate the fan. I am sure the heat issue would go away if the fan just blew a little harder.

>>
>>56057573
?
so you're saying disabling it has no effect?

If you have access at the BIOS level and can disable there should be nothing they can do afterwards

I don't know what the mechanics of it being enabled and activated are. What protects someone from disabling it when they have complete access to the BIOS?
>>
>>56063911
Enabled/Not Activated is how it comes straight from Lenovo. If you have BIOS access, you can leave it just how it is or set it to Permanently Disabled. This kills any sort of Computrace service forever.

I'm not 100% on the specifics, but more or less -- if it is Enabled/Activated, then your computer is on the Computrace botnet. It will phone home to Computrace if you allow it any kind of internet access and if it's on the stolen/lost list, a remote code execution will occur that kills the motherboard. Even with BIOS access you are unable to change the Enabled/Activated status without either an unlock code or remote code execution from Computrace removing it from the botnet...at which point it returns to the default Enabled/Not Activated status. Computrace security isn't technically IN the BIOS, it's on a separate security chip. Flashing an updated BIOS doesn't change this either so forget it. If there's some kind of hardware hack for Enabled/Activated Computrace, I'm unaware of it because I haven't bothered to research it and it's likely fairly involved.

IIRC you can get around this by flashing coreboot/libreboot but there are so few supported models and sub-configurations of those models that it's barely worth mentioning.
