Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

MODS=GODS has been true ever since i first used the internet.
your input is not friendly and seems like you only do it to make the free software crowd and the open source crowd hate each other. this makes no sense. GNU/Linux is neutral, nobody asks you to call it just GNU.
and even if you don't use GNU (and i still doubt it because you never proved it) using just Linux in the OP doesn't make a lot of sense.

What's the deal with those DEs, huh?
Why are they all trying to be like Windows/OS X?

>inb4 GNU/Linux vs. Linux starts up again
>>
>>55811992
Well, DEs are bundles of software that aim to be consistent with each other and share a few common things, if you don't have the time and experience to know what you want and do it they are a good choice.

It was till the shitstains in the last thread started it. I simply created a new thread then I was getting insulted and called a troll.
>and seems like you only do it to make the free software crowd and the open source crowd hate each other
I do it because GNU/Linux is an unfair and inappropriate term.
>GNU/Linux is neutral
No it fucking isn't, are you daft? Linux would be the neutral term, you just call it what it's always been called.
>and i still doubt it because you never proved it
Nobody ever asked me to. I don't just go around proving things in case somebody asks for proof, you fucking dipshit.
>using just Linux in the OP doesn't make a lot of sense.
Yes it does, because to 99.99% of the people who know what Linux is knows it means Linux based operating systems. You know it too, you're just being a twat about it.

How do I batch rotate videos? I've got a folder of videos that need rotating clockwise, so far I know I want to do

ffmpeg -i in.mov -vf "transpose=1" out.mov

But this requires putting in the input name and output name of every file. Is there a way I can avoid this?
>>
>>55811828

I was looking at it but am a nub so can't work out how to put it on a usb to try it out, also interested though
>>
>>55812081
the debian install guide covers it nicely. but basically install windows, open the disk manager in windows, shrink the biggest partition you have by the amount you want for GNU/Linux, make an installer-usb using win32diskimager or cp/dd, start the installer, install GNU/Linux to the empty space, make sure grub is installed and configured. (grub because if you need help you should stick with the defaults)
>>
>>55812159
You can do a for loop, I prefer using find. Have a example (replace with your settings):
find . -maxdepth 1 -type f -name '*.flac' -exec bash -c 'f={}; ffmpeg -c:a libopus -b:a 192k -i "${f}" "${f%.*}.opus"' ';'
>>
>>55812179
loop version

for i in *mov; do
ffmpeg -i "$i" -vf "transpose=1" "$i"_converted.mov
done

Sorry but pretty new to this so I want to try and understand what I'm doing

For the first one you're basically specifying your files using 'find' to regular files in this folder of a certain file type. I don't quite understand the next bit, using the -exec bash -c tag followed by the part in quotes...

What?
Did you not install anything at all yet?
You need X.
You have pacman... right?
You have to choose a mirror.

sudo pacman -S yaourt
>>
>>55812235
REALLY? No1 wants +1 internets, REALLY?
>>
>>55812139
I'm baiting.

DE's (only) make sense if you're using GNU/Linux and have a life, or simply want a preconfigured Desktop.

WM's (only) make sense when you are in love with your computer, have no life, or you're using GNU/Linux for such a long time, that you already have your favorite programs and know how to configure your system yourself. At this point, the stuff a DE provides just feels useless (why having 2 terminals, 2 file managers, etc).
Maybe that's why WM desktops usually may look like used by a hacker, because the users are usually oldfags.

Then you can use a DE with a different WM combined, like KDE or GNOME with i3, because you're curious about other WMs, or you just like the look and feel of, as example, openbox while keeping your DE.

tl;dr All programs fill some needs of some people, there is no golden rule for "this is the best program" or "best way of using a computer".

Anyone else having problems with the new vbox 5.1.*?

Resizing is broken, and I've already seen a lot of bug reports about it, may be tied with the new QT gui, but the real problem for me is that 3d accel (on windows guests) doesn't work, programs that use it freeze and crash, and I've only seen a single ignored bugreport on the tracker.

I had to compile 5.0.26 (which works perfectly fine)

Also another problem, after the last update of nvidia drivers, whenever I login and start an X server, I get a black screen. If I switch to another tty and back it fixes itself, but it's an annoyance.
>>
>>55812297
> -exec bash -c 'f={}; ffmpeg -c:a libopus -b:a 192k -i "${f}" "${f%.*}.opus"' ';'
- exec executes a command on every result find comes up with
- bash -c starts a shell, needed for this goodie here: "${f%.*}.opus" - it's a parameter expansion, which removes the old file extension so you don't end up with file.flac.opus
- f={} usually, when you use fine, the result is in the variable {}, which is redefined here, so you can use parameter expansion, a normal exec command with a normal variable looks like this:
find . -maxdepth 1 -type f -name '*.flac' -exec echo {} ';'
this will simply echo every search result or
find . -maxdepth 1 -type f -name '*.flac' -exec mv {} new_{} ';'
this will rename every result to new_result

First, you can use apt instead of apt-get. The only diff is that apt-get is backwards compatible and apt is friendlier to end-users.

Second, the error is reporting that something is using your dpkg directory. This could mean you're running apt-get in another terminal or it (most likely) is being run automatically by the ubuntu software center or something.

Honestly I don't know if it's part of the software center. It has a process name of "update-manager" on Xubuntu, and the Ubuntu release notes say they dropped the "Ubuntu Software Center" for "Gnome Software Center" or some shit.

The software updater will pop up without any user interaction, so that's why I mentioned it too.

>>
>>55813452
yea, but you get lots of options
>>
>>55813404
Usually scrot, but since you're using Arch, keep it simple and use imagemagick.

Some examples:
# Desktop
import -quality 100 -window root +repage "~/scrots/scrot_$(date +%Y%m%d%H%M%S).png"
# Window (with window frame)
import -quality 100 -screen -frame +repage "~/scrots/scrot_$(date +%Y%m%d%H%M%S).png"
# Window (without window frame)
import -quality 100 -screen +repage "~/scrots/scrot_$(date +%Y%m%d%H%M%S).png"
# Select part of screen:
import -quality 100 +repage "~/scrots/scrot_$(date +%Y%m%d%H%M%S).png"

If you don't a imagemagick installed (you should) you can use ffmpeg:
ffmpeg -f x11grab -i :0.0+0,0 -s wxga -f image2 -vframes 1 "~/scrots/scrot_$(date +%Y%m%d%H%M%S).png"

If you find yourself with glitches using scrot or imagemagick, try xrectsel (https://github.com/gvalkov/xrectsel) or slop (https://github.com/naelstrof/slop), alternativly, kill your compositor (pkill compton; screenshot; compton)

If you're using gnome, forget about all this jazz and run:
gnome-screenshot -a

Okay, so why are you trying to mount an NTFS partition as rw?
The USB drive should be fat32

mindless ideas:
Did you partition from within windows or were you planning to do that from the installer?
Personally I think it's safest to just use the disk management utility in windows, since you might have to defrag to free up/consolidate disk space anyway. Try that?

My answer was that you're using a DE so you don't know where your applets are running from or can't figure out how to inspect the source code yourself.

/inti: line 7: can't open /dev/sr0: no medium found
>>
>>55813848
Okay here's how it generally goes:
Create a bootable USB device.
Change your motherboard's firmware settings (BIOS) so that the USB device is at the highest boot priority.
F10 exit and save BIOS configuration
Should now be booting up the USB device
Should now be looking at the installer loading up.
If that's not the case, something is wrong with your USB image or device. In my experience, many USB devices contain semi-invisible partitions or are corrupted enough that you are unable to boot from them.
Do you have any other USB sticks? Try a clean Rufus write, and check for bad blocks with 1 pass. (it may take a few minutes)
>>
>>55813875
ALSO MAKE SURE THAT YOU DOWNLOADED A FULL ISO.
Rufus has no problem letting you write a corrupt ISO to USB, and it won't tell you what you did.
Download the ISO again and make sure the ISO is the correct file size.

Without +repage you should get a "out of bounds" warning, since the selection screenshot still has the layer geometry of the full display.

Usually you don't need +repage since most programs handle this on their own (hence just a warning), +repage just prevents this (updated the geometry information to the new geometry).

What exactly is the project you're undertaking?
And i didn't mean that your power supply has insufficient wattage, I just mean HOPE TO GOD that you don't lose power in the middle of the flash because this is firmware we're talking about. You need serious tools if you fuck that up. Have to send mobo back to OEM.

You won't get shocked, but your "innards" are pretty sensitive to static electricity.
If you actually need to touch the hardware, make sure you
1) have an antistatic bracelet (only for nerds)

3) touch a ground (a metal casing does fine) several times before you touch anything.

You should have a password for the root user in the event that you need to login as root, but certainly don't make it your user password and definitely don't make it easy to decrypt with john-the-ripper.
My root password took 160 days to crack with john, and it was only 12 characters. Changed it recently to add some entropy.

GIMP hackers, please tell me how to rotate a layer or text without destroying it. (I tried: layer > transform)
>>
>>55814942
what do you mean by destroying?
what exactly are your trying to do?
>>
>>55814942
tools -> transform -> rotate
>>
>>55814962
Pic related, the GNU is transformed (and the text garbage). The Linux isn't.
>>
>>55814972
That caused the garbage. (Did I miss something?)

I think I got it, "interpolation" was set to "none" which caused the gargbage. Thanks all.

Select Image and then Canvas Size from the top, pull-down menus.
>In the resulting 'dialog box', just below and to the right of where it says
Canvas Size:
Click on the two, small 'chain link' icons.
Click on the little box that has a small, 'down arrow' on it, and select
Percent.
Increase the Width and Height to 150%.
Click on the box about halfway down and to the right side of the
'dialog box' that says Center.
Click on Resize.
>Select the Rotate Tool from the 'Toolbox-Tool Options' dock.
>Click inside the original image.
>Rotate the original image from either inside the resulting 'dialog box',
OR by clicking/holding and dragging the original image to the desired
angle.
>>
>>55815075
That looks much better, thanks.

boot into a live distro and repair grub, there are lots of guides for it.
>>

It has been long since I messed with linux.
Windowos exclusive progams :(

I forgot to ask one thing , do I need to use a fedora Live USB/CD or can I use other distros for repair ?
>>
>>55815532
Mostly autodesk stuff. Like Inventor and Fusion 360
>>
>>55815543
any distro would work but using the one you have anyway seems to make more sense.

hey guys

i was running a win7 + arch dual boot on some laptop my friend gave me. but the win7 partition was rancid so i ran malwarebytes, ccleaner etc. it went fine. then today, i was updating the malwarebytes database and suddenly it turned off. now when i turn it on grub doesn't come on.

i tried to see what gparted says off of a live usb and it seems i have two boot flags assigned, one for w7 and one for arch. this is my absolute first time looking for boot flags, is it normal to have two (one for "system reserved" and one for arch partition, win7 was installed first)? if so, i should work on repairing grub like >>55815504 said, right?

How stable is a headless debian installation compared to ubuntu server?

I plan on running plex, sickrage, couchpotato and deluge + vpn on a dedicated machine. I need downtime to be 0 as I am not always available to physically reboot the server if it fails due to traveling where I'm gone for weeks/months at a time.
>>
I'm using two monitors on >GNOME, part of the left monitor is bleeding into the right one. Is there any way to make it not do that?
>>
>>55816272
I'm currently running the setup on ubuntu server but it crashed once in the middle of one of my travels which pissed me off because I couldn't reboot it until 14 days later which meant I had no media for 14 days.
>>
>>55816316

>>

>anecdotal evidence
Hence why I am asking which one is most stable, silly.
>>
>>55816397
Ubuntu LTS versions with point updates are pretty stable. It's just a matter of preference senpai.
>>
>>55816272
debian stable is the definition of stable, the only other things as stable would be RHEL or centOS.
>>
Is there a comparsion list of MS fonts and free replacement fonts?
>>
>>55816501
what do you mean?
gnome has a utility to have a preview of almost all fonts if you are after that.
for basic stuff unifont and freefonts are already enough. cantarella, terminus, noto and dejavu are also pretty cool.
>>
>>55816501
Are you referring to this?
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Metric-compatible_fonts
>>
>>55816576
That's perfect, thanks.
>>
>>55816272
Debian stable is in my experience very stable.
I've had uptimes of years on debian servers, rebooting only for critical security updates.

I never used Ubuntu Server in production, so I can't compare.

I'm trying to install Arch.

I don't want a separate home partition, so what would be the home partition will instead share the same partition as the root, do I have to do anything? Or do I just leave it and it will work on it's own?
>>
>>55816794
You don't have to do anything. Just set a partition for root and you're good to go.
>>
>>55816834

/home is /home, whether a dedicated partition is mounted here or not.

How do you hide a file on Ubuntu? Need an app? Another file manager?
>>
>>55817081
Rename the file .file
>>
>>55817089
Thanks. But that's not very practical, what if I just want to select and hide a lot of files? (which is what I have to do)
>>
>>55817136
You can even batch rename them with most file managers, write a script or put them in a hidden folder.
>>
>>55817081
why would you want to hide a file?

still using the family computer kiddo
>>
>>55817081
If the shit you're hiding might be sensitive,
I suggest using an encrypted directory via
ecryptfs

move them into a hidden folder

I don't know how to script. I suppose encrypt or create a hidden folder will do.
