Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

I want to make a dotfiles repository in github and I'm using mpd as a tutorial to learn how to.

sure, but some people still don't want it even if their machine can run it fine.

>>
>>55818064
Atool supports more file types than just tar basically.
>>
>>55818064
The good thing about atool is, you don't need to remember any commands/flags (you just run aunpack file.tar.gz) and it prevents archives from being scattered allover the place.

That's cool.
>>
>>55818153
Too bad it can't handle rar files.

NEED HELP
Guys I dual booted Win10 just to secure my fucking license if I ever needed Win10 for whatever the fuck reason.

I had Arch as the only OS, then installed Win10 and activated and of course, grub no longer worked.

Tried to follow this dumb guide:

It is in spanish but I'm sure you can identify the commands.
Now I can't boot either Arch nor Win10

How the fuck do I fix this shit. I need my laptop for work right now.

Thanks in advance.

Some games once work well with a certain wine version, then become broken with a newer version. playonlinux can install a separate wine for every game setup.

Another case was Diablo 3 which only worked with a certain version with a specific patch set back then.

You can use different prefixes using WINE's variables, eg WINEPREFIX=~/.gaymen/gayman/ wine gayman. There's also one for versions, if I remember correctly.

Hi /fglt/

I just finished installing Ubuntu on my laptop with Windows 7 and I've got a question

Is it possible to make my laptop boot to Windows 7 automatically and set a certain key (like F11) to boot to Ubuntu? How would I do that?

Using Ubuntu 16.04 on a thinkpad t450. Have been using it for little over a month. Almost everything has been running fine.

Couple of hours ago only while I was watching a film (mp4 vid) on VLC the computer instantly shut down. No beep, no log off screen, just one moment running normally, next dark screen and powered off.

At the time it was plugged into a power outlet, however it had enough battery to run without being plugged in, and a power spike or something like that seems unlikely because everything else of electric equipment seemed to be running fine.

Right before it happened I had open transmission, VLC and the files viewer.

Never seen anything like this before, what should I look into to find the cause?

Look for any entries about overheating or power anomalies.

Most often a surprise shutdown like that is caused by a thermal event to prevent the CPU from damaging itself.

if i click the "run action" command in the xbindkeys gui, it works fine (although it does open the window behind everything else), but if i use the actual keybind it doesn't open.

Wow, I wasn't baiting or anything though.
Look, I'm a linux noob who is half-talking out of his ass, half isn't.

I've used linux on and off since 2012 and my experiences have been varied with it. The last thing I did with linux was a debian netinstall on my desktop (which I barely use and sits in my closet) and I got a little pissed when I realized I had to install even the wifi drivers for my dongle.
I don't know if that was the case because I did a netinstall? Are those more minimal or something?

Anyways, I'm not a tech retard - nor am I afraid of terminals. I put my own computer together, pasted my thinkpad, etc I have my virginity credentials.
I just am frustrated because there are a million distros to choose from and I don't know which one to be set on. I just want my shit to work and be able to set it up within 2 to 3 hours.

Would it be better to use real Arch or Debian over a variant such as Antergos? Or would I just be wasting my time if I intend on installing and adding those same non-free codecs and repositories. I'm not anti-free/stallman or anything, its just that you all know damn well its fucking impossible to try to be 100% freetard and still keep up with the times

Why can't we have one where people don't call Linux by an incorrect name that grossly misappropriates the majority of the functional OS to GNU?

As far as I can see they're behind some cool optional and interchangeable bits but all the big stuff you'll find in every distro is from redhat and freedesktop. Only UNIX fanboys who think you need sh and ed to have an OS think GNU has any place in the name of a modern system like Poettering OS Linux (POS Linux). Like, GNU/POS? GNU isn't an important enough part of POS Linux to get a piece of the name. Go use GUIX if you want GNU/Linux and stop improperly referring to POS Linux as GNU.

How do I tripcode?
This guy >>55824865
is cool as shit

Also, what is xterm? I mainly use xeyes and xclock, never heard of xterm, though.

yes
it is a persistant environment, that you can go in to and freeze when you want to.
yes

Ok so I was going to update ubuntu from 14 to 16 but it turned out I didn't have enough room in / so I removed everything in /var because I didn't think it was needed but now I can't sudo or su and I can't upgrade because it says
>E: Unable to write to /var/cache/apt/
>E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
Have I fucked things up beyond repair?

>even caring about that retarded flamewar

By the time you're deep enough in to know that debate exists you know enough to know it's ridiculous.
>>
>>55824916
That's basically a tutorial how to destroy /g/.
Filtering says welcome to the plague (tripfags, consume whores, pcpartpicker, /v/), because nobody tells it fuck off.
>>
>>55824939
I prefer the tripcode guy to this clown
>No room at highest directory level
>Move things out of a subdirectory
WUT

>>55824950
I have no fucking clue what you are going on about.
You clearly are responding to someone doing something that you dont agree with or that you just dont want to look at.
This is where filtering comes in.

Jesus Christ yes you have.
>>
>>55824959

It's a mv command, nothing that can't be undone by moving it back

Not if they're on separate partitions? Not that he can figure out mountpoints if he moved apt cache out of /var
>>
>>55825016
They are not separate mount points, it's pretty obvious they are not from what was stated.
>>
>>55825005
sorry

Can I come back in now?
>>
>>55825044
Only if you take off your clown nose.
