IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

My x200 has started getting really hot lately.

I can't tell if it's a new chrome update, or if the thermal compound is decaying.
The fan is running nearly at 100% at all times, and using thinkfan only slows down the fan and makes the keyboard warm to the touch.
I can smell the wood veneer of my desk getting toasted underneath.

Should I reapply thermal paste?
>>
>>55785644
Has it been a slow ramp up to running hot, or is it just doing it all of a sudden? Have you checked your processes for suspicious/excessive use?
>>
>>55785709
it's been getting worse over a period of 4 months, yes.

the only active process is chrome and it's threads, which don't go past 0.35 cpu usage anyway

hmm it's more like 40-47 for me, but the ambient temperature is pretty high.

Hi guys, just a question
I fucked up the keyboard ribbon connector of my X230 Tablet and i'm going to replace it. Is it equal to the X230 (non tablet) one?
I want to buy this http://www.ebay.it/itm/New-for-lenovo-IBM-Thinkpad-X230-T430-T530-Original-Backlit-Laptop-Keyboard-UK-/161406087860?hash=item25948d72b4:g:yX8AAOSwQItT~eWK but i'm not sure

Yes, all mechanically and electronically the same. Someone even came up with a modded BIOS that allows you to use an X220 keyboard (praise the Lord), but a small amount of dremelling is required.

I'm not even comparing them to IBM era laptops. When they acquired the brand from IBM they continued producing decent quality laptops for a while. All they had to do was keep the same formula and add options and internal improvements to the battery, screen etc. No, they had to return to their Chinese nature and start gimping on quality and slapping the logo on any consumer piece of shit with a black matte finish

so my replacement screen and hinges for my t430 just arrived.
im gonna put them in later.
my t430 was driven over by a semi, lel.
still works though but i can turn it on since the keyboard is busted, the screen is and part of the left hinge broke off. i know it still workes since i used the keyboard from a friend for diagnostics.
never htought that little baby would survive being run over.
the screen is the matte 1600x900 screen from the dell alienware laptops which i got off amazon for 30 bucks.
hinges are from a mom and pop hardware-store and from what i can tell theyre actually genuine lenovo hinges.
ill take that opportunity to also clean out the fans and probably reapply thermal compounds since i got some arctic silver 5 lying around.
the only issue is getting a suitable keyboard. i have found them in the right layout but none of em seem to have backlighting i really love that backlight.
any idea where i can find them? im going into the city tomorrow to check some hardware stores for them since i didnt find them on amazon. if i wont find any can i order them directly off lenovo?
where woudl eb a good place to get them (in the eu)?

every tab is its own process and thread. really hampers battery and ram usage.
its good on a desktop since if one tab crashes its not gonna kill your entire browser however in addition to each tab being in its own process and thread, each subsystem of chrome is also. for example the rendering thread, addons you use and other things.
its not really practical on many mobile cpus since they use a thing called processor parking to stop cpus from working when they are not needed.
chrome overrides that in many cases and uses its own power saving solution which isnt great. unless you have a 3xxx intel mobile cpu or greater which have some optimizations for that.
on amd mobile cpus the power drain can be devastating. killing battery in an hour if it should have lasted 5 instead.
firefox is a good option for notebooks since it uses the systems power management instead of its own implementation. you can however go into the chrome/crhomium flags and disable a lot of things.
not sure if thats gonna help though.

it depends what model etc

In my experience with new Thinkpad models you can still view settings in a locked BIOS (but they will be grayed out and you will not be able to change them)

If you see pic related when you first enter the BIOS that means that it is password locked.

You can press ENTER and still access the BIOS but won't be able to make changes

No, it must be a Socket G2 Sandy Bridge CPU, the higher it comes with is a dual core i7-2640M according to thinkwiki. You can upgrade to a quad core like the i7-2630QM though but thermal issues are a thing.

The higher you can go and tested is the i7-2860QM quad core iirc, you need a 90W charger and a fire extinguisher though.

it's ok
depends on how much you want that IPS screen

This is a truth in the general consumer market. I wouldn't expect those type of people to buy any business line due to their various assumptions. Business lines doesn't exactly conform to being a macbook clone or a walmart look alike so they get ignored by our typical consumer friends.

Depends on your needs.
Odds are you will love the x220 for the portability and battery life but hate it for prolonged work due to the small screen.
If you need to do a lot of actual work and not just browsing and shitposting on reddit I would go for the t420.

Don't know why I am even replying to these 'what is best for me' threads without any explanation as to what your needs are...

Hello /tpg/ so I have this dilemma:
>thinking of buying a laptop for college:
>HP Elitebook 8470p or T430
Both are i5 3G, intel 4000, 1600x900, 6 cell battery, 500hdd (8470p 7200rpm, t430 5400), T430 is 4gb RAM and HP 8gb.
>tfw linuxfag btw
Both cost $223
Which should I choose?
>>
I'm doing some battery tests on my X220T (so basically X220 as well) with 6cell, windows is done, osx is finishing, for linux I prepared kubuntu but I read that a lot of you might not like it because "it's heavy".
I'm willing to test other lightweight distro as long as it is available as iso (I am not going to fuck around with gentoo and such, just put in stick, install, do tests), so I'd like a recommendation, also is powertop still the one thing to do power/battery management in GNU+linux?

I own a thinkpad T440p but it's heavy as shit with it's 9 cell battery and 2 drives inside

It's perfect for work but carrying this 6 pounds piece of shit to school and around campus with a ton of school notes and books feels like it's about to rip my shoulder clean off any time soon

Is a brand new Thinkpad Yoga 11E for $269.99 a good choice?

It's going to be for school only and still in my budget limit since I have to shell out another $300 for a mobo replacement on my T440p

Was just about to post mine, although it's a t460p not s. I'm glad I'm starting to see this line popup a bit more frequently in these threads. It's such an improvement over everything else lenovo has done.

I don't have that flickering problem though. Sometimes it flickers when I have videos full screened but it's probably cuz I'm still using the default video player on ubuntu (totem) and have no additional drivers.

The main benefits of the 8460p is the good glass trackpad and the excellent chassis. It's really well built (has a LCD rollcage that ThinkPads used to have but was scrapped as it weighed too much) and way nicer to work on than the T420.
