Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Was here couple weeks back round the same time, praising the nip keyboard for its full size windows key, and for having both a long left shift and a large enter key.
Not even weeb, just can't stand the 3/4 sized windows key, and I like the long left shift so my pinkie just comes down from the A key to press (like on US keyboards) but I like the large enter key too (like on EU keyboards)
Tiny backspace shouldn't matter if you can reach the corner, and tiny spacebar shouldn't matter if you normally use the center of the spacebar anyway

Was the quality of the T40/T41/T42/T43 and X40/X41 the same as the T60/T61/X60(t)/X61(t) and the T400/T401/X200(t)/X201(t)?
Or did the quality slowly drop?

If it was the same, did the drop in quality only begin at the X200(t)/T420/T520/W520?

I noticed my X201 is of slightly better build than my X220, and my T60p is even better built in terms of rollcage and surviving drops, but I'm wondering if the big drop (the beginning of the end) happened from X201 to X220, or if the X200/X201 themselves were already steps down from their previous iterations.

I'd like specifics like stats on how many survive drops, rollcage builds, materials, shape/layout etc

So apparently the gook at 51nb release the X62 board through some Chinese seller (this is unverified, I just read it and got the link from the other thread)

I'm calling a QC and supply nightmare on the whole project.
What makes it worse is that he's not even bothering to cater to the western markets at this point (you know, the ones that can make him money)

Anyone have any info on how sale of this thing will be handled? What do you think will become of the project? Any news scraped from Chinese forums?

That's what I figured

The T420/X220 seem like a bit of a drop from the X201/T410, but the following drop into the X230/T430 is large, and especially the drop into the nearly identical X240/X250/X260 and T440/T450/T460 which is huge

Considering the superior cpu of the X220/T420 it's hard to say whether the X201 or the X220/T420 is the 'last good thinkpad,' and it seems after a couple of years of shitting on the X230/T430 even those are now considered for title of 'last good thinkpad,' probably due to both the ability to add in the older, better keyboard and that as the following drops in quality were even greater, relatively speaking they are still closer to the good old ones than the bad new ones.

Like I said, I have an X220 (daily driver,) X201 (linux testing machine / lend it all the time) and T60p (used to be daily driver). Wondering what one I should get next, I like the sound of X60t/X61t as they're cute as fuck, but also the T420 would let me have three hard drives and I'd get to try my hand at the screen mods, and also a T430 for the keyboard mod too as it'd have a better CPU, and finally an X200t/X201t/X220t/X230t to fuck about on a tablet thinkpad.

tl;dr Have: X220, X201, T60p
Thinking of getting: Any tablet thinkpad from X60t to X230t, T420/T520. Would try mods out.

Which to get for fun considering what I already have?

No.

T4x series = no rollcage. Bad chassis design lead to GPU fracturing.

T6x/T400 = base + lid rollcage (apart from T60)

T410 onwards = base rollcage only
>>
>>55804231
>Which to get for fun considering what I already have?
went from an X200T to an X230T and am disappointed. While it's not going to be my main GNU/Linux machine I will still be using it a lot.

You can mod the X230T with an X220 keyboard (requires filing nubs and a modded BIOS) but I'm not motivated since the X230T I have is close to new and I don't have the motivation to unfuck it.

If you're looking for a cheap tablet model to screw around with get the X200T. Best price to performace ratio (dirt cheap on shitbay), IPS panel, last of its kind. Batteries are expensive and hard to source though

Hello tpg, I kind of want to get a cheap thinkpad to use as a comfy shitposting device and to watch movies on the train and such, and also to use as my first device for learning Linux. However, I'm having a hard time finding one for a good price. I'm in western Europe in the Benelux, any other anons from around here with tips on where I should look? Or should I give up and look for some other cheap machine to put Linux on?

>When your Thinkpad setup is too hot for /tpg/
>>
Yesterday I posted here that my X220 performs worse when it's plugged in than when it's running on the battery.

Turns out that I'm a retard who can't read because on the Thinkwiki it says that the CPU gets throttled when plugged in with the default 65W AC adapter.

>The CPU speed will be throttled back to 800MHz if the machine is run on the 65W AC adapter with no battery installed. To avoid this throttling
>run on a 90W AC adapter, or
>install a battery pack.

Is there no way to prevent it from throttling the CPU besides getting an adapter with a higher wattage or having a battery in my machine?

will it throttle if it has a batttery in it though?
I know that the x220 will throttle if there's no battery and only a 60 watt adapter, but runs full speed if it's on a 90 watt without a batt.
I thought the w520 would be the same.

exactly, there is no way, but if you are worried about your battery just set charge treshold to 40%-60% and be done with it

I am kind of poor and need a laptop.

Found a X200 and a T60 used.

The x200 has 150gb of space, no idea how much RAM it has.

On the T60 theres more info: 80gb of space, 2gb of ram, Core 2 Duo processor

Now I am from Mexico so prices are, obviously, higher, so doing the conversions the T60 is around 68 dollars and the x200 is around 80 dollars.

So, considering I plan on installing some distro, and using it to program, open pdfs, use the internet and study, can anybody with experience on laptops just advice me on which one is the better option?

But not having to dick with ad blockers for Youtube is nice (in the past they were always finnicky, or Google would make you stare at a black screen for 15 seconds before playing the video)

It also enables background playback of youtube videos on mobile which is nice.

/g/ is off topic shitposting anyways

I'm asking this here sinceI am posting from a thinkpad right now, and because you guys buy second hand shit all the time so you should be able to relate more than anything

would you guys consider it right to complain over an item being sent to you in outright filthy condition? I just spent over an hour cleaning this bad boy, and that kind of bothers me. The guy sent it to me in full working condition and it had all the extra goodies, but it was fucking coated with actual filth, not just dust.
I don't understand how anyone who has ever had a job or worked with products before could consider that acceptable.

X220

What are you?
Poor?
>>
>>55808604
not true at all
if you've sold a laptop for $200 accepting a return on it can easily cost around $60
10% final value fee that you don't get back - $20
3% paypal fee - $6
the return shipping you're forced to pay - $15ish
add on another $23 for the fact that you're likely going to be selling it again once it's back in your hands and most sellers will usually just give you $20-30 to shut you up and get it solved fast

i've had this pulled on me repeatedly selling laptops for really petty reasons like "it's missing 3 screws," ebay will side with the buyer literally every time and they know it
it's why i've stopped using ebay, but if you feel like you deserve money back for whatever reason you'll likely get it because it's easier than arguing with you for a week and then having ebay take money out of your account

>>
>>55812970
It keeps the bid low by picking it up at the end. If you want to rely on the max bid, you might as well lurk around for Buy Now.
>>
>>55812970
Doesn't max bid do it instantly when the price goes up?
>>
>>55812794
You'll be fine with 4gb.

>>
Currently trying to haggle the price of a Thinkpad on eBay down. Wish me luck fellas
>>
>>55803685
Hey guys, so i am rather new to Thinkpads, never had one, nor do i know a lot about them.

I do mostly web development, and will be using my device to do webdev things, and maybe some systems programming.

That being said, all i really need it for is commandline stuff (I use Vim) and maybe a game of Dwarf Fortress during down times at the office.

Do you think i should buy used, or just go full out and buy new?

Also, recommend any models?
>>
>>55813440
decent machine, but try and get a t400

>>55813753
is your work going to pay for your machine? buy new then
>>
>>55813770
Nope, the machine is for work, and personal use so my company isn't going to pay for anything.

I also do freelance on the side to make some extra money, so it will be used for that as well.

The "picking it up at the end" is fooling yourself, if someone is interested, they will do the same as I did and set a maximum bid, rendering your sniping useless, as the value will escalate.

>>55812976
It will not help.

>>55813003
Maximum bid increments automatically as soon as someone outbids you. It increments the minimum amount possible up to your maximum bid.
>>
>>55814193
Sniping uses a computer to place your bid at the last second, taking everyone by surprise since people like you can't react.
If you know what you want to pay and what your item is worth, you can mop up auctions effectively and save money.
>>
>>55814325
not this guy >>55814193 but I don't see how setting a sniper with a limit of $150 would be different than just setting your max bid to $150.
>>
>>55814325
That is an illusion, is what I'm saying. If I set a maximum bid that is greater than your sniping value, I will still win. You are only fooling yourself for not messing around with the item value until the last moment, thus atracting more people thinking that will go for peanuts.

>>55814385
Thank you, I knew I couldn't be the only one.

And also, you do realize that you have to give your ebay credentials to god knows who, right? I find this laughable when people boast about using Common Sense in antivirus threads. Jesus.

>new to Thinkpads
Refurbished ThinkPads are pretty cheap while having great build quality, extendability and keyboard. They are also the last bastion of quality clit mouses.

>linux webdev
>used or new
For terminal and browser? Used models will be more than enough. I run X230 for professional web development and desktop replacement. The 12" 1366x768 display could be better but I just dock both at office and home if I'm doing any serious work.

>models?
X230, T430, W530 for Ivy Bridge generation. They have 12", 14" and 15" display respectively but very similar specs otherwise. T and W models are physically larger but offer optional Nvidia GPU, larger resolution displays and socketable CPU.

You could also look into X220, T420 and W520 for a generation older with the classic keyboard. They run a bit hotter too. The old keyboard layout is better but there little to no difference in typing experience. Personally I prefer X230 keyboard feel over the one I had on X201.

I prefer the X-series due to its small size.
>>
>>55814385
>>55814400
I'd vouch for it but it would be pointless on 4chan.

Ideally, you don't have to play cat and mouse with a bunch of people and swoop in at the last second with what you'd like to pay instead of everyone trying to one-up everyone inch by inch.

There are lots of trusted auction snipers, not everyone downloads the first program they find on google. Also not every auction is eBay, they're used everywhere.
>>
Just outfitted a old T430S with 850 evo and 8gb. Goddamn this keyboard may acutally make me be compelled to only get lenovos from now on.

Gonna start eyeing the P50
>>
How much cooler does the X230 run compared to X220?

t420 and 220x are recommended based on price/performance ratio. But be prepared to repaste the CPU, replace/upgrade RAM, and swap the HDD for an SSD. Those upgrades can cost as much as the laptop itself unless you have parts laying around.

Hello hello, completely new to laptops in general, I see no reason to go much further than the specs of a T420 for college (we're not doing much that could be demanding, at most some eclipse to do java), so, is that right?

As well, I'll probably want to put linux (possibly keeping a windows boot) on it. How can you check if there's a bios password?
>>
>>55816876
If you can access the BIOS then there's no password. If you can't access it and it requires a password, then there's a password.

Wiki says the Thinkpad Advanced Dock supports the R61, so you could use that with an eGPU to get vastly improved performance. You could also try finding a motherboard with the NVS 140m and swapping it in, but that card is suicidal housefire tier and won't perform nearly as well as the Advanced Dock solution would.

By the time you spend all that money on trying to get a faster GPU, you would have spent enough money to buy a laptop with a faster GPU

The Advanced Dock paired with a Penryn Core 2 Duo Thinkpad smokes even the W520 for graphical performance. Old laptop GPUs are no match for newer desktop ones and CPU isn't important enough that the difference matters in most cases.

How is your battery life on your thinkpads?

I have a T520 and the most battery life I've ever had was around 4 hours, I'm not sure if that bad or pretty decent.
