Previous thread: >>55738997

IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

i guess thats reasonable, desu thats why i considered it too, just because i dont need a fully functioning tp during summer, but i lost the idea of it shortly after because id have to fuck with the wifi card (mostly because ive already had issues with it in the past so i dont want to fuck it up further.)

what SSDs do you guy recommend in general for older thinkpads like the t420? Can they make use of SATA III? DO SSDs even get bottlenecked by SATA II? Sorry for noob questions
>>
>>55768151
I'd say get a cheap OE SSD from eBay. Running a $30 128gb LiteOn in my gaming rig rn and it works fine for an OS drive.
>>
>>55768151
I have a W520 and use an msata SSD, here's the deal:

HDD Bay/Ultrabay
>Sata III

MSATA
>Sata II
>Read/Write capped at 300MB/s
>IOPs not capped

Personally, I don't really care too much for the cap on msata, rarely do I hit the 300MB cap, if at all... most of the performance benefit comes from high IOPs I think

Hope that helps

Thats not a bad price, it is in pretty good condition. 594 sold listings... $170 is the bottom of the 1st page when i sorted it as highest price...

Granted, I paid $165 for a broken screen T430s.

As far as me using one, I've yet to get a 8470p. though 8440p wasn't bad, they look pretty nice, liked a 8760w, didn't like the 8570w because the one i had was fat and lumpy. There was an 8460p but it sadly big time frame damage.

>>55775924
I think maybe 30% better battery efficiency.
idk, it felt that I got about 5 hours on a FHD quadcore i7 W530, but that battery was mint and laptop was hardly used.

but if you are thinking of an 3rd gen i5 thinkpad, remember no third party batteries will work on them.

processingwise... not sure, i think its 10 or 20 percent better? but in reality you should check benchmarks of laptops you'd want.

I think a 3rd gen i5 system start about $50 more than a comparable 2nd gen system (in terms of RAM/HDD/LCD). Well thats what I had seen when I did the dankpads lookup.
>>
>>55775602
Bought a 2570p. Don't like it. The trackpoint and keyboard aren't as good as in ThinkPads and the drivers are a pain in the ass.
Worst of all - there's no scroll button in the middle, only two mouse buttons.

The only improvements over ThinkPad are the metal chassis and disk drive.
>>
>>55776394
>no scroll button
This drives me fucking nuts when I have to use my work-provided 8440p off the dock.
>>
>>55776394
>The trackpoint and keyboard aren't as good as in ThinkPads

I've heard the keyboard (while not Thinkpad-tier) is alright, and I've never used a clitmouse.

>the drivers are a pain in the ass

I'm going to be putting Linux on it, how bad is it going to be?

>Worst of all - there's no scroll button in the middle, only two mouse buttons.

Doesn't it have 2-finger scroll? Granted, it's not a scroll button, but personally I think I'd be alright with that.
>>

8560W owner here... Elitebooks are damn nice. I can't really make a direct comparison with Thinkpads as I have not had the option to use a TP for long enough to have any real opinion though.
Trackpoint, touchpad and keyboard are all very good IMO.

Most things work out of the box on Linux (again, 8560W, not 8x70x). Only two things I noticed so far that did not work right away: screen dimming and press-to-click with trackpoint.
And yes, two finger scroll is working as well. Probably other gestures too I just have not bothered to set them up yet.
First one is easy to fix, second one I have no solution to yet. The problem is that the clitmouse is identified as a PS/2 Generic Mouse with only three buttons (the three right below the keyboard). Not a dealbreaker per se as I usually use an external mouse when working. We are talking a 3.3kg beast with 15.6" screen here, not a cute 12.5" so it truly is more of a 'mobile workstation' rather than a laptop. Ofc. the 8470p will be smaller and lighter but still, imo, a bit on the large and heavy size for comfy lap-browsing.

You'd have to do a case mode or remove keyboard depending on ThinkPad model to accommodate for a mini PCIe version. I'd also expect the BIOS whitelist to disagree with the mini PCIe version.

Probably about a year ago when I did a T601F.
>>
Hi guys. Would 462 usd be a good price for a T440s? It's the one with an i5 processor. Seems like its in good condition too.

This thread is running a little weak, but I'll try once again:

T430
i7 -3520M
6 GB DDR3L
500GB HDD
NVIDIA NVS 5400M

340€ shipped

Did I do good?

Hey, should I get the ThinkPad p50s or New Xiaomi Mi Notepad?

The ThinkPad p50 is about $800 base model $50 more expensive than new Xiaomi Notepad which cost about 5000 yuan or $750. Both have GPUs, and 1080p but the Xiaomi has a ssd and think pad p50s only has a hard drive.
>>
>>55784372
The T420 has versions with and without a dedicated GPU: http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:T420
>>
>>55784372
the hd3000 one is the most common variant but there are some ones with a dedicated NVIDIA NVS 4200M

I have two new batteries and want to see which one is in the better condition.

Would it be easier to do this in GNU/Linux or Windows?

I assume there would be information about cycles used, power on time, or capacity remaining that I should be considering

picture unrelated
>>
>>55784859
Dunno about Linux but in Windows the Lenovo Power Manager utility shows all that info.
>>
>>55784859
Lenovo settings if you're in W10 shows cycle count.
>>
Looking to upgrade from my T61p. What do you recommend?
>>
>>55785031
thanks, forgot about that util
>>55785095
good to know thanks

>>55785112
if you don't need too much computing power go for an X series with an IPS panel

you're going to be disappointed with the drop in build quality with the newer models (I would say X230 and up)

My T410 took about an hour. Mainly cuz I had no fucking clue what I was doing.
>>
>>55784275
I would have made sure it has at least 8GB of RAM and an SSD for that price.
At least I hope that you got the 1600x900 screen (which is shitty anyway).

>>55785423
That was my first time thermal pasting as well. I'm getting really nice 36-40C idle.

I wanted to try out some new desktop environments so I reinstalled Debian with MATE and Gnome.
Surprisingly I am starting to like Gnome. It feels so futuristic. The only thing I don't like is that the top bar can't be adjusted bigger so I could see the temperature monitor better.
