I've come to the conclusion that desktops are obsolete. I'm going to be docking my MacBook into a solid monitor from now on. I hope that eGPUs will become more viable if I need extra power.
what monitor does /g/ recommend? minimum 27'', budget $600. I dont believe in buying technology new so would get it used.

That depends on the filesystem.
On EXT family filesystems, each empty directory will take up an inode, so you'll run out of inodes before you run out of normal space.
