Going to a music festival next weekend. Which fragrance should I take?

Which house's frags have the best dry-downs and why is it Guerlain?

CDNIM is the loudest, Dylan Blue is the most mass appealing. Pour Homme smells the best and most uplifting, might boost your mood but nobody may smell it. Might be good if you're gonna be sitting next to someone else, though.

Fuck me that's a sexy bottle.
I'm wearing Mugler Pure Wood at the moment.
>>
I want to pick up a bottle of D&G The One homme. What size should I get? Will it go bad?

>>12694906
My father said he didn't enjoy that one. He usually likes fresh citrusy scents, basic stuff. Is it challenging? I've considered getting a sample but I have a big order on luckyscent, and they don't have it. And I'd imagine that since we're genetically related, we probably have very similar olfactory sensibilities.

>>12695538
Was just going to say the same thing.
>>
>>12695575
probably 50ml is enough. it's pretty subtle in terms of projection and not exactly a casual sort of scent so really depends on much you'll wear it.

the scent is amazing though

>>
>>12695713
don't they only last a few years

not 'bad' but they lose scent after a while even if kept in a cool dark place
>>
>>12695753

If its a good perfume, and preserved well, not even the top notes can go off. If there isn't an airtight seal, they probably will fade a bit even if stored properly.
>>
>>12695756
most of mine have the 36 month symbol on them
>>
>>12695774

Usually that is a marketing ploy so you essentially are a returning customer to their product, a very sneaky way to influence your consumer IMO. Although it varies on the concentration of oils in your scent, most fragrances regardless of being EdT EdP or parfum last longer than that. It's all down to what concentration it is, the ingredients used and how you store it.
>>
>>12695782
well I keep them in my sock drawer which is inside a cupboard and in their boxes
>>
>>12695575
Try it out, it's worth sampling. I wouldn't say it's particularly challenging, didn't have to stretch my neck out to enjoy it or anything, I just really loved it right off the bat. It's very fresh with a cucumber vibe and then just a little bit of Fahrenheit with the leather/orange/vetiver. Really, it barely resembles Fahrenheit, but it doesn't have to because it's great.
>>
>paying out of your ass for 50ml of scented water

literally the peak of retardation
>>

Subjective retardation really depending how each person sees x amount as paying out the ass.
>>
What's your favorite box?

Pic related, the bottle is really fucking cool too. Too bad it smells like shit.
>>
>>12695774
I have a bottle of Creed MI that's 4 years old and still perfectly good. If you store your bottles properly, they'll be fine.
>>
So, just finished up my latest batch of samples, mostly Roja, Kurkdjian, Ormande Jayne, and Nishane.

Have to say, it really seems like a lot of high-end niche stuff is some combination of amber, oud, musks, and animalic notes. A lot of the scents I tried seemed fairly interchangeable. I mean, the blending and composition is different, obviously, but the general profiles of the scents all seem so similar.

Didn't find anything I really liked all that much out of everything I tried, aside from maybe Nishane Hacivat, which I think might actually be better than Aventus. Still don't know if it's full bottle worthy or not, though.

Hopefully in October when I'm in Amsterdam they'll have Creed Viking and Roja Elysium at De Bijenkorf. Pretty excited about those two. If they're anything like what I'm hoping, I'll for sure snag bottles.

>>12696233
I found it a tad fecal, personally.
>>
>>12696204
Yeah, that's the unfortunate part. Those are the most "niche" notes, AKA the ones considered by most to be unpleasant. There are a lot of non-animalic, non-oud, non-balsamic niches out there, though. Try Millesime Imperial, Zoologist Dragonfly, Philosykos, etc.

Fresh and woody. I know it feels like "Oh, but that's just designer!", but if you smell a woody, fresh or fruity frag done right I guarantee you it doesn't smell designer. It's appealing to many without being something that's been seen many times before.
>>
>>12696204

>>
>>12695919
Are you talking about The One smelling like Farenheit? I don't understand. I have sampled The One and quite liked it.

>>12695606
>not exactly casual
Please elaborate? I don't work in a place where I need to be extremely strict with expressing myself.

>>12695971
>out your ass
uh, depending on what you're getting, but most of these are well within the price range of what you can afford to pay for clothing. it's just another accessory. one that definitely influences people. you'll do fine with your axe sprays if you don't go crazy with them though, but don't expect to have people noticing and complimenting your scent.
>>
>>12696204
>>12696343

Yeah Elysium I guess is kind of the polar of what some designers do, venturing out of the safe zone with a few "niche" lines. I think in the case of Elysium its him dabbling in a gateway scent for people used to mass appeal scents, so trying to cater for designer tastes. It definitely lasts long and acts more like a heyday cologne and not like cologne as we know it concentration wise today. I would say its the sauvage or aventus of his line. A few people have compared it to them. Based on the colour of the juice id say there is definitely more synthetics in it than his standard 80-85% natural to 15-20% synthetic ratio. Don't buy it blind whatever you do.
>>
>>12696304
I have MI and just bought a backup bottle. Dragonfly, I actually just sampled. I like the drydown, the opening I like but don't love. Might consider it. I'll try Phylosykos next time.

>>12696343
>>12696398
Didn't try Black Gold.

Elysium does seem like something I'd like, though. Won't blind buy it, I never do with things in that price range. I'll test it in Amsterdam if they have it. I do think it's good that Roja is branching out a bit. I love my bottle of Enigma, but I don't really like any of his other scents and a lot of them seem kinda same-y.

Also, a lot of niche stuff seems to use cedar, which is a note I absolutely hate if it's prominent at all. Just really doesn't smell pleasant on my skin.
>>
>>12695753
>don't they only last a few years
Tell that to my 70s and 80s bottles that smell better than current formulations.
>>
>>12696501

Same here with my 60s bottles.
>>
>>12696523
I'd guess that most people who are spouting this BS don't even have first or even second hand experience with it. They're just parroting stuff they've read on line.
>>
>>12696523

If they got it from duty free where they didn't store it properly and it ended up going off I wouldn't blame that perception, but if someone got it fresh from a boutique and kept it in good conditions, it would last indefinitely, in most cases anyway.
>>
>>12696555
Well that, and it's an actively encouraged "myth". Perfumers want you to think that your fragrances are no good after a year or so so you'll buy more. It's like the "absinthe makes you hallucinate" myth. It doesn't, but absinthe tastes like shit and no one would ever buy it if it didn't have the reputation it has, so people who make it play up the "green fairy" shit.

Curious about bdc, 1 million, invictus, aventus, MI, green Irish tweed and y'all l'homme/nuit
>>
>>12697456
ysl*
>>
>>12697456
Aventus is godly but watch out for batch variations, that's a big fucking trap, BdC is great, 1 Million sucks donkey dick but 1 Million Prive is A+++, MI smells like heaven in a bottle but not past 2015, GIT is dated and smells sort of like laundry, YSL L'homme teeters between excellent and smelling weird, YSL La Nuit De L'homme (subjectively) sucks and (objectively) has horrible performance.
>>
>>12697473
I do like the laundry smell desu
>>
>>12697473
Also anything else I should try? prefersbly not too expensive (don't even want to spend creed money when I already have so many) and niche i.e. too hard to find/have to blind internet buy
>>
>>12697482
Amouage Reflection is the best "fresh laundry" scent in existence. Just beautiful stuff and super versatile.
>>
>>12697486
For probably the best Aventus clone out there, try out Pineapple Vintage Intense. The opening is a little different, obviously heavier on the pineapple, but the drydown is exactly the same, it's insane.

Designerwise? I enjoy A*Men Pure Malt, damn fine frag that's masculine and cozy as fuck. I would also suggest you try Versace Dylan Blue, mixed feelings on that one but it's a fine fragrance and very mass appealing. Invictus is also another solid designer choice, though if you can find it, try Invictus Aqua, one of the greatest designer opening ever followed by a synthetic headache, but one that women seem to love.

Also, you're smart to stay away from niche, letting this interest spiral out of control for wanting something new is what happened to me and I suffered through a lot of insane Creed batch bullshit and many, many returns of bad ones.
>>
>>12697482
>>12697486
Also, assuming you're the same person asking for reccomendations, another great designer would be Montblanc Individuel. It's got this fabric softener vibe that destroys me with headaches but is apparently super mass appealing and gets compliments out the wazoo. I couldn't stand wearing it more than the time I tested it, though, so i couldn't tell you if that's true.

Sauvage is no artistic masterpiece by any means but to say it "smells like shit" or "like a chemical spill" is just silly and reeks of bitterness and jealousy.

Changing subject, I've been wearing the 2016 formulation of this pretty frequently and I easily get 14+ hours on skin even after a gym session. Not sure why people say this juice has performance issues. I've also smelled the vintage juice back in the 90s and it smells exactly the same.

I have for reasons began to only wash my hair, feet, asshole and tip of the dick (cold shower, so the rest just gets lightly rinsed). I'm no longer wearing deo.

Imo this gives a pretty pleasant musk but I was wondering what to complement this with. Any ideas for perfume that goes well with armpits and musky balls?

Scrubbing off scents that are associated with infection (aka areas with a lot of non-symbiotic bacteria like the ones I listed) makes perfect sense. They produce unattractive smells telling women "don't fuck me my immune system is weak". Drying your skin out and scrubbing off your natural pheromones makes no sense at all though.

Just a quick cold water rinse will do for these parts. And I'm wondering if there's a cologne to accentuate the natural good smell. I hate when people smell like twelve year old boys with axe body spray.
>>
>>12700456
No, just a quick rinse will not do. Nobody wants to fuck someone who reeks of BO. Your "musk" is not sexy, it's fucking gross.

Scalp smell is gross yes. Foot smell is gross yes. Dick cheese smell is gross yes. Asshole smell is gross yes. What do these areas have in common? Accumulation of nutrients for infectious bacteria. The bacteria produces unwanted scents. Areas that do not have these issues and produce a lot of deliberate pheromones (like the armpits, balls, lower back, neck, lightly hairy areas etc) should not be washed more than to rinse off any particles. It has been well proven that people react positively to these scents until they oxidise which take like a day in fabric so just switch underwear daily.

This is not the same as having BO. BO is a combination of bacterial accumulation in the areas I mentioned and oxidised olfactory compounds, aka when the good body odour gets to stay exposed to oxygen in unwashed shirts for too long.

Help me out here guys. I've been trying out samples from niche fragrances recently (zoologist, imaginary authors, etat libre, cdg) and are they supposed to smell so similar? It's like they all use the same powdery-soapy base that takes up 70% of the scent and then only 30% is left for actual different notes. Sure when I spray 2 samples on each wrist I can see the difference but still they all could be described by what you would smell walking past a soap store.
Is there something esle I could try or am I just a massive pleb who should stick to designers?
For what its worth I also tried a couple of Creeds samples and they actually smelled like something you could wear daily and completely different to one another.
>>
>>12700688
what youre experiencing is perfectly fine. what you describe is pretty much the reason why people just stick with designer fragrances.

so you pretty much have two choices: continue looking for niche fragrances just so you can pretend to be a hipster and say you wear stuff nobody has heard of or wear designer fragrances that actually smell nice.

trust me, i used to be kinda like you. I would look for niche fragrances so that i can feel like im wearing something unique but the problem is that I could never find a smell I liked and would always have that "bed, bath and beyond" smell
>>
>>12700703
Thanks, that probably saved me a lot of money I would have spent on more shit.
>>
>>12700703
I kind of agree. I think there are quite a few very nice, unique, wearable niche fragrances that are absolutely worth the money, like Roja Enigma. On the other hand, I find a ton of niche stuff also smells like someone took a giant shit, spilled some oud and rose petals on it, lit it on fire, then pissed the fire out.

Say what you will about designer scents, they may be "pleb shit", but at very least the vast majority of them smell nice and wearable, if not particularly creative.
>>
>>12700703
>>12700732
Plebs
>>
>>12700688
Sounds kind of like you picked ones with aldehyde notes but I've also noticed this happens with a few niche fragrances that shouldn't in theory have them, not nearly all though, for example Philosykos from diptyque has a really soapy bath store undertone I find that ruins it but Tam Dao doesn't.

Possible you've just had bad luck picking out samples, since you don't find creed to suffer from this its probably not just your nose.

How are Aventus clones In relation of it? They are like Paco Rabanne XS is to Creed Himalaya?
>>

The only one that really comes close to it is Pineapple Vintage Intense, and that's only identical to modern formulations and has a slightly different top. The rest are different in a weird way (CDNIM) or really fucking weak and a little synthetic (Insurrection II Pure).
>>
>>12701621
>>12701643
I second Pineapple Vintage, I have a bottle of Intense and it's fantastic.

Another one to consider though, is Nishane Hacivat. It's about the same price as Aventus, so it's not a clone exactly, nor does it try to be, but it has a similar profile. That same pineapple-oakmoss-smokey accord. The drydown is quite different after a while, though. It smells like Aventus, but with the addition of sort of a sweet, aldehydic-citrus-green accord. It's very interesting and very high quality. Definitely worth trying if you like Aventus but want something a little different.

They're either ridiculously animalic/balsamic like Kouros or hyper macho, 60 note abominations like Drakkar Noir that could choke out a room and only ever evoke the image of the "cologne guy".

Really, though, the only difference between then and now is that we KNOW about more subtle compositions. Those were the most popular frags at the time and there wasn't as much interest in frags at the time/there was no internet, so those are the only ones people remembered. The most popular ones today, I.E. Invictus, Sauvage, Eros are just as loud and annoying as Joop! or Kouros. We just know the less annoying ones like Versace Pour Homme.

Lastly, I think people became more conscious of other people and that's why frags tend to smell more "good for everyone" and less aggressive or bold ones that give everyone around you day long headaches.

>Not even their bullshit "Creed Ambergris" is in there
>Bulgarian rose (probably half a drop of the stuff)
>Provence lavender (again, probably not much at all)
Its funny to me that certain brands use very little of certain ingredients to justify their "prestige". Like not just because IFRA reduced the amount of rose you can put in but they don't even try to use a decent amount. This is another case of Creed Greed (TM required), using a tiny amount of their "quality ingredients". Lets be generous any say their EdP is 20% concentrated, thats 400 drops of oils for 100 ml EdP. Not including bases from Fireminch or Givaudan, as well as high impact molecules which would take up the majority of the drops, how much "quality ingredients" they claim to use do you think are in there? Especially pathetic considering the cost of the small amount they use compared to what they charge. And this isn't including price markup and all that. IMO this is Creed yet again desperately struggling to try and compete with houses and attar makers that genuinely use high amounts of ingredients that justify the MSRP, but obviously not competing in terms of quality. People will still eat this up, the marketing will take over, people will say how nice it smells, even though there are tiny amounts of ingredients that cost the company any expense.

Like another anon said, go for it when it hits grey. It will probably be about 20% closer to its actual value in price then. Even if you love Creed and its supposed prestige, how it makes you feel etc etc, don't let them pull the wool over your eyes.

I;ve seen some youtube reviewers first impressions of it since they got early samples and they don't seem very impressed, taking into considerations that there is some shilling going on. I will have to get my own nose on this to form an opinion if it's worth the money.

Where the fuck did the behind the ears meme originate? What a silly way to apply fragrance.
Spray at the inner elbow, wrist, or neck. Chest works also. The number of total sprays will vary depending on the relative strength of the perfume. Sauvage is very assertive, so try one spray under clothes and another on a wrist.

I smelled Dylan Blue for the first time today while killing time in an Ulta (shit fragrance selection in that store btw). It was, as people say, someplace in between Sauvage and Bleu de Chanel. I didn't like it on paper and didn't try it on skin, but my curiosity is sated. Not terrible, just indistinct and bland.

Recently got Versace Eros as a gift from my brother. What do you think? It seems to be a very loud, clubbing, but the mid and bassnotes seem more relaxed, relaxed enough for university classes?
>>

Too much projection and too sweet for classes

I'd say it's ok if you go easy on it. It's pretty fresh, though it is fairly sweet and heavy. I'd go light on the trigger and maybe apply an hour or so before you go out.
>>
>>12704578
I do 2-5 sprays generally, depending on frag, atomizer, occasion, etc. Most frags 3-4 sprays. 1-2 on chest for nice wafts from under collar all day, 1 on back of neck, 1-2 on forearm(s). Avoid proximity to nose, i.e. face/front of neck, to prevent olfactory fatigue. Under clothing mutes projection. On hair/clothing holds on to top notes longer, but just a dusting as some frags stain some fabrics.

Best to test application in more casual situations and best to ask others about projection, rather than rely on your own nose. And always err on the side of caution if unsure in more important occasions.

I like NOIR fragrances, right now using 1740 Marquis De Sade and there is like 1nl left.

And I am thinking - what should l choose - two middle average fragrances, one for the day, and one noiry for evening, or one expensive?
What can you suggest for me?

Started sampling this week with these low-tier fragrances. If anyone is interested (if you're not able to spend a lot on perfume) then I found that:
Escentric Molecule - just plain wood scent. It's fresh but literally just woody and musky. Good if you want to smell like wood chippings.
YSL - Good for the price but more of an evening thing. Very gingery and Lemony but not in a detergent way.
Coty Aspen - Lemony in a detergent way.
Lalique Pour Homme- Woody with an interesting orange citrus smell on first application and then develops into hints of sweet floral smells later on. Long lasting. Good value for money at its current price.
Versace Pour Homme - Similar to Lalique but stronger lemon top note.
Will be ordering more samples soon.

how many frags (not samples, actual bottles at least 30ml+) does /fra/ have?

I'm at around 25 I'd guess at this point. Mix of cheap shit, some mid-range niche and designers, and some Creeds, Amouage, Roja, Xerjoff, etc.

Dumb question here - how is it determined whether a fragrance is for men/women or unisex? Is it stated officially by the producer or just by the general consensus? I recently got a sample of Violet Disguise at a local shop and I just can't fathom why every site says it's a unisex frag....

I have the 17Q01 batch. It's great but I can only compare it to the 2-3 samples I had in the last couple of years. The opening is more fruity but pineapple note is very smooth. It's not as smokey but the birch scent seems to be slightly stronger than in my samples.
>>
>>12709090
One more thought - I feel like because the smokiness is downplayed a little you can smell more vanilla in the drydown.

The assistant at Sephora sprayed it on my wrist a couple of years ago and I heated the opening but when I got home I couldn't stop myself from smelling my hand. I could still smell it on me the next day so the performance is great. To this day i haven;t found anything with similar drydown. Go for it if you want somwthing for colder weather.

Exactly. You can get a decent bottle of cologne for around $50 and that'll pretty much last you the while year. As for people who collect high end fragrances, I don't see how that's any different from collecting shit like sneakers or watches or whatever.

Try Burberry London. It has both cinnamon and lavender, along with tobacco. Super safe, cozy, masculine winter frag that can be had for less than $40 for 100 ml.
>>
>>12709479
I'd say those that are cynically niche for the sake of being different by creating something to be bizarre are just as bad as designers that exploit markets the way they do too. Niche in a sense of individuals or small brands that use good materials to create a beautiful scent however, is a reason to still hunt for a good fragrance.

i actually just bought this. first fragrance i bought for myself. Im not really a fan of the initial smell but after like 30 minutes, it smells wonderful. when i was reading reviews about it, i frequently saw people complain that you end up smelling like a christmas tree. i dont get that at all.

the problem i seem to have with it though is that after like an hour or so, the smell doesnt seem to radiate off my body. i mean, i can still smell it but it seems like nobody else can. i even asked a co-worker if she could smell anything and she said no, unless she got like super close to me.

is this normal? i know some fragrances arent suppose to be super strong, is this one of them?
or maybe im not spraying enough? i spray one around the jugular area on my neck and wrist.
>>
>>12709741
That was also one of my first frags. To me it always seemed to harsh and spicy and yes it doesn't seem to have the best projection after a while. But it sure stayed a skin scent.
But when I had girls try through my collection burberry London had the most consistently positive reaction. Second place imperial millesime which gets shilled a lot in here and to me barely smells like anything at all
>>
>>12709640
I agree. To me, a good quality niche fragrance that isn't trying to be weird for the sake of being weird and doesn't smell like cat piss and oud is unbeatable. Like, Roja Enigma or Creed MI, there is no designer scent that can compare to those in my opinion.

On the other hand, I'd rather have a nice mid-range designer frag than something like, say, Amouage Fate, or Dark Oud, or Secretions Magnifique. I definitely get where the hate for niche fragrances come from, I've sampled quite a range of them and a lot of them do smell frankly pretty unpleasant.
>>
>>12709786
well as long as thats a common thing about it not projecting after a while, thats ok with me. it still smells nice and the scent stays on my skin all day.

i just started to get paranoid, thinking i might have bought a fake. i bought it off fragrancenet, which claims that everything is real but im still a bit skeptical about that.
>>
>>12709794
So far Creed and Amouage have been the only 2 niche brands that I liked (granted I didn't try many). It just seems like they try to actually create great scents at higher quality than designers and not tryhard coming up with shit like the most authentic smell of hot concrete and broken glass...
>>
>>12709916
I love Roja Enigma, and Roja Elysium seems to be getting good reviews. Aside from that, I don't care for any of his other scents that I've sampled. There was Fruity Aoud which was nice, but it's not available as an EDP, so it's like 650.00 a bottle (and not available on the grey market), and I didn't like it enough to justify spending that.

I agree that Creed and Amouage seem to be the most palatable niche houses overall, though Amouage has some pretty horrific fragrances as well. Xerjoff also has some very nice scents, you might want to try a couple of those, Mefisto is a very nice rose-citrus scent that's masculine and not too sweet and doesn't have that typical screechy niche profile.
>>
>>12704917
I'd say try out a 2016 bottle, it smells amazing
>>
>>12710033
I looked up Mefisto and it seems very interesting. How is the iris note in that one? - for example in Dior Homme it's way too intense for me.

I would really love some more niche recommendations for scents that avoid having this cloying and soapy vibe around them which most that I tested seemed to have. CdG also have this strange offputting metallic aura (serpentine, 53).

The iris isn't that prominent. I find the rose and citrus to be the main notes along with a sort of tea-like note.
>>
>>12709615
>>12709741
>>12709834

The "festive" smell some people complain about comes from the frag smelling somewhat like pine, combined with the other warm, spicy notes. Personally I think it makes it smell amazing.

Performance is something most people find lacking with London, but I think you'd get better if you applied more on your upper body, maybe one behind each ear plus the one you already spray on your neck and wrist.

I've bought some of the oils that smell like it from the ghetto swap meet, which impressed the guy with the boosted cases of cologne, since all the thuglites wants dey sef africant musk.
