It's a cartoon, it tends to exaggerate character physics, Marco has taken beatings and came out like nothing happened.

I talked to a lot of female friends I have who always watch drama and romance shows, told them the backstory and the characters in general, and ultimately asked where they felt season 3 was heading.

They all agreed Marco will realize his feelings for Star, a relationship between them is uncertain however, but that this show had the coolest romantic sub plot they've heard of. Most of the stuff they watch is relationships they wish they had, but that nothing hit them harder than my description of Star and Marco's friendship road to love.

I can believe the show exaggerating some recoveries from injuries (ex. no one's complaining about Marco getting tossed around by Marco's but being fine after the fight) but when you show a character literally getting decapitated in a show that isn't fuckin Looney Tunes or some shit, you've kinda crossed the line where it can be said "it's a gag." Like that's way too abnormal to ignore.

Though I also wouldn't say it applies to every single Mewman, but I do think it implies Mewmans can take more than humans.

I'd say it's more likely maybe that guy's specific family or even just him has that ability (like different Mewmans can maybe withstand different things?), but once the show's twice mentioned and shown a guy surviving decapitation you can no longer write that off. At the very least it means some Mewmans can survive it.

Daron said in an interview about Season 2 something along the lines how the show naturally keeps getting more "sequential." Since this was in like June or July of last year, just before the premiere, they would have been working on 3 for a couple months already too.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are more plot episodes than even 2, though I think there will naturally be some less-serious/episodic ones as always because of course there will be lighter moments even with the threat of impending war. Last season seemed good at tying in the "filler" episodes in the second half with the season's larger themes.

Though honestly I don't know how they'll handle the plot at all. This finale was much more open-ended than the S1 finale; I feel like I'd need some episode names or images before I even begin to speculate.

What happens to their relationship? She keeps denying that she has a crush on him, and tries to act like everything is normal. But there would probably be an unseen strain in their friendship now, and Marco would eventually notice it - especially if Star, not wanting a repeat of Just Friends, starts to avoid him around Jackie. Yeah, aside from "Star and Marco are reunited, eventually" it's hard to make any strong predictions about what's going to happen.
I'm sure it's not going to go full drama/intrigue all the time, we're almost definitely going to get a "meet Pony Head's family" episode for example, but I just hope the show doesn't lose its way trying too hard to take itself seriously.
I have a lot of confidence in Nefcy and her team, but I've seen too many shows make wrong turns in their third season, most of them taking much less risk than a total status quo shift.

Toffee's never really lost onscreen yet (obviously to Moon but that was in the past); in fact he hasn't really done anything wrong so far.

By now I think it's pretty clear he wanted to get blown up and do the things he's done in Season 2. Which sounds stupid but works with his regeneration; finger placed in the wand seems almost like a savestate so that he can "die" once but use that later to reconstruct his body, somehow.

As much as I'd like this, season 3 would be a really bad time to do that since there's so much plot to cover.

If everything gets wrapped up, or nearly wrapped up at least, then I'd like to see more episodes such as Quest Buy, Sleep Spells, Freeze Day, School Spirit, and so on. Though not every SoL episode was great in season 1, they could be incredibly fun and had potential. It's something I felt season 2 mostly lacked because all the SoL episodes were done in what came off as a very unsure or detached fashion, whereas season 1 SoL stuff mostly came off as innocent, spritely, and imaginatinative. That said I'm seeing less and less possibility for that kind of thing, since I can't imagine how SoL will even come to be, if ever in season 4. After the final boss, or even during buildup to the final boss, how are you even going to excuse Star and Marco just going on random adventures like they used to? And after endgame, how are you even going to excuse them having other dimensional adventures, assuming Star's more or less mastered her magic by then? The thought's kind of sad.

I don't know if we're ever going back to that same level of wacky adventures.

But this is a character-driven show, even if it's growing an overarching plot fast. The writers are good, they know what makes the show work, and I don't think the "real" plot will overshadow or get in the way of the important stuff, which is Star and Marco.

I think the situation going into S3 is the looming threat of Toffee and Star having to deal with that. I assume the biggest impact this will have is Moon taking over Star's magic training because she's going to have to be able to handle herself and the Wand. In that situation, Star isn't going to be doing much in the way of adventuring or having fun in general. If that's the situation, it's going to have to be resolved sooner than later because this isn't that kind of show and the audience needs to get back into some kind of comfort zone.

I think there's a real chance Season 3 opens with a bang, at least on the Mewni side, and either Toffee suffers his first major setback (enough that everyone can relax for a while and we can return to some normalcy) or shit hits the fan at full blast and Castle Butterfly is actually overrun right from the start.
If Moon can keep Star in the castle on the defensive, the story isn't going to move anywhere and nothing interesting is going to happen.
If they actually lose the castle, and who knows what else, then we actually have some twisted return to a recognizable status quo, with Star on the run across Mewni as the new "adventures."

This isn't some kind of super-serious live-action show. Yes, the S2 finale set up some very high stakes, but most things will get resolved and go back to some semblance of a status quo pretty soon. Because no matter what happens with the plot, "Star and Marco having wacky adventures" remains - and always will remain - the core aspect of the show. Some things will definitely be different now, of course, but nothing would change fundamentally in the long run. The Toffee menace will either be promptly dealt with, or will somehow become a background thing enough to allow regular SoL continue in some capacity.

Think Rick and Morty, which has just resolved most of the mess created by S2 finale in one episode. I guarantee you that Star and Marco will be reunited within the first couple of episodes, and will somehow go back to wacky SoL within the first 5-6 episodes at most.
