Depends what you call mainstream because in many ways bitcoin is already there. We are still in baby stages and most people don't see the change that crypto will bring.

If you're planning on investing a large amount (several thousand) then buy a hardware wallet (google Trezor). Storing your coins on a computer is NEVER safe. Ever. Bitcoins and other crypto is the biggest target by hackers because it cannot be reversed. If your comp has been connectd to the internet you need to assume its compromised and never store a large number of coins on it.

If not investing a large amount, just download electrum for BTC.
