You need to spar with people who know what they're doing and you need a coach to tell you what you're doing wrong

Yes you can and people do, but you are still going to have to have some interaction with people that can guide and coach you, even if that means that you are making a twice monthly trip to a dojo that is driving distance from you. You will need to pick a specific martial art and find the appropriate online courses, not just random YouTube videos. Of course, you can expect to progress slower than someone that trains 4 times a week. Slow and steady is better than not at all.
