First of all, they're antithetical to the design of 4chan. Ephemerality is one of the key design points in imageboards, and a constantly rotating thread destroys that. If that's the experience you want then you should go join a forum.

Second, it encourages an entirely separate niche ecosystem filled with its own cancerous memes and tripfags. Generals are not quality threads, because nothing has enough content to sustain a 24/7 circlejerk. They're just shitposting

Third, they're literally tumors. They grow, take up permanent space on the board, and then promote the growth of other cancerous generals. Nothing should be permanent here, and no one concept should be constantly taking up board real estate.

By being present around the clock, all those Sad Panda threads have been enticing our fellow anons into opening them and consequently made them give in to their carnal urges every day.
