Well, I've watched the prescreening of Koe no Katachi too. It's definitely a well done, well directed piece of work. My problems with it are in the story and that's not the movie's fault (the way some characters act is just way too unrealistic for me). The animation is rock solid (as expected from Kyoani). At some points the filters felt a bit overdone (as if trying to copy the sparkly atmo of Shinkai movies), but overall it's not annoying. I really appreciated that it wasn't all tearjerking drama and teen awkwardness, but carefree silliness and comic relief as well.

Well if the movie didn't change the characterization that much, I would agree with you.

However after rereading it back then, the point of it being incomprehensible(unrealistic) at times is that it shows how people truly are with how they cope up and accept their sins.

The biggest violator here was Kawai. Back then I said what the fuck is this girl thinking. And how the hell did she come off as resolved. Then I realized it wasn't about her finding resolution about her sins. It's about Shouya forgetting about it. It's not meant to be good or bad. The scene was good because Shouya let go off it. In the end it's only bad for Kawai's case. She could completely go on and lie about it to herself and it was irrelevant to Shouya.

This is a pretty dumb complaint, of course a character being attractive is important in appealing to the audience. This is still fiction and all fiction is going to be idealized to some degree. Hell even in nonfiction like documentaries both the interviewer and the interviewees still often wear makeup. But that's not inclusive to KnK at all, you could make the same claim for nearly all of anime and live action films. Saying the characters are too attractive is so broad, ambiguous, and completely nonspecific to this one film it's not even worth bringing up.

Yamada is practically flawless.
Ishidate has a lot of potential, Mirai-hen was notches above the TV series. VEG will be a test to see if he's better off doing TV or movies, but it's a different format than KnK TV so I think he can pull it off. He's willing to branch out into other genres and settings so I want him to succeed.
Last good thing Takemoto did was Kyoukai no Kanata episode 10(best episode by the way).

Yamada : GOD empress and actually the only director with good sense of space and framing on KyoAni. Many silent shots and body language scenes. FEET.
Ishihara : Oldest main director of the bunch and the most Otaku of the bunch. Likes to direct fun stuff since he got famous with Key drama in the 00s.
Kigami : Not a series director since a decade but he's in that god status in animators world. He's of the Akira generation.
Takemoto : Used to do good stuff with quick cuts back in 09-12. Haruhi S2 and Haruhi movies are where he peaked.
Ishidate : Had only one chance and he blew it with a retarded idea to have each episode go on with a color palette. His episode are top tier though.

I like Ishihara's subtle when doing characterization. It's not like Yamada's characterization style which is more straightforward but more a bit subtle where you only see the development when you skip 3 or 4 episode (I mean you watch 1st episode then jump forward to 4 episode or more). Kind of regret he did chuu2 s2 though.
Takemoto is overall great director, his technical is great. He can handle character with logical style. But I dislike his direction on characterization. It's too long paced. Despite that, when he direct something that already get characterization, he does really great job, i.e Disapperance, and Lucky Star.
Yamada.is great at character interaction. She builds the characterization with character interaction. K-ON! was great because its character interaction was perfect. But for macro-plot, she sucks at it. She improves a lot at Love Story though.
Ishidate's direction is too subtle for average watcher. His direction lacks of characterization, probably the worst director in kyoAni in term of characterization. But seeing VEG PV makes me think twice of him.
I like all of them but since I'm fond of Ishihara-style, I put him in the first.
