Hey, someone last night was asking where to download the movie Legend of the Sacred Stone and I didn't get to answer before the thread was deleted. I'm on my phone right now, but I uploaded it to Mega and will share the link in the active thread when I get home in 6 hours or so.

It's a Pili puppet movie that's subbed in English, for those wondering how it's relevant.
>>
>>144211837
knowing enough kanji is enough to live a fulfilling /a/utist life
bonus point, if you know more kanji/classical chinese than average nip, you'll get to better enjoy those meme writer who throw in alot chink terms.

also, to get over shitty jp -> inggrish translation corruption.

>>

Beijing (Mandarin) 4 tones, Hokien 7 tones, and Cantonese 9 tones.
All of them can be written in Chinese characters but mostly when people write, they use Mandarin.
Good luck.

>>144211667
No, Taiwanese hate blondies.
>>

chink official subbed release coming soon in 10 minutes. I'm gonna ride the tide soon.
what time CR releases?
>>
>>144212369
What makes a language hard to learn is how closely it resembles your first language (ie English).

For example Chinese has a lot of ssss sounds. I don't know how to describe it. Like saying "what is this?" = "zhe shi she me" (english phonetics would be more: "zuh sih suh muh") You got 3 in a row. It's like a tongue twister. The nice thing is everything is 1 syllable though.

Compared to Japanese it shares the SVO english has instead of the SOV backwards feeling.
>>
>>144212369
How do you plan to do that? I reckon you'd need to actually have real people who could teach you and you could practice with everyday. But I doubt it could be much faster anyway, might as well learn to read and write too.
>>
>>144212325
Knowing Kanji doesn't tell me what ?還不知地便足鋭眼穿楊狩雲? means. I can get the meaning of parts but as a whole it eludes me. I can't even see any basic structure.
>>
>>144212741
Either that's a slang or you're trying too hard.
>>
>>144212596
Phonetically speaking, I think Chinese is a much harder language to learn than Japanese for Westerners.
The sounds just don't come naturally.
A lot of people could pronounce Japanese words with an acceptable accent at the first attempt, whereas it's much harder to make yourself understood in Chinese if you aren't a native speaker.
>>
>>144212741
Yeah, you're better off learning Chinese and then gleaming Japanese not the other way around.
>>
>>144212842
I tried to read the subs in >>144210736.
>>
>>144212848
Yep this is what I was trying to say. It's hard to say without sounding like my mouth is full of cotton sometimes.
>>
>>144212880
Apparently it means "You don't even know that he is 銳眼穿楊(his title or something, describing a sharpshooter) 狩雲霄(his name)".
>>
>>144212880
>I tried to read the subs in >>144210736 (OP).
You made multiple character errors, but I can't blame you. It is hard if you are not native.
>>
>>144212953
Adding to the difficulty is also the fact that Chinese seems to have a lot of similar sounds, e.g. there's "qing"s, "ding"s, "jing"s and the like, with four different accents that could each mean multiple things.
I'm a chink that's grown up abroad and I often have trouble remembering Chinese names because they're often a mouthful.
>>
>>144213296
Beats Japanese where things sound the name and mean different things.
Or are written the same but mean completely different meanings and readings.
>>
>>144213296
I still think it's easier than Japanese. 1 script vs 3 and each kanji is 1 syllable unlike Japanese where it varies and may have multiple readings.

But I believe speaking Japanese, in the literal sense, is definitely easier once you get the hang of it plus there's incentive. With Japanese you do it for the anime, manga, and games.

Pinyin is just an intonation guide for Mandarin reading, it is not an alphabet.

Mao pushed out a simplified set of commonly used characters, which differs somewhat drastically to the form that's been in use for about 1800 years, around the time of Latin Dominate and nearing to the point of Three Kingdoms.
>>
>>144217111
Pinyin isn't an alphabet. It's literally a crutch using English alphabets to help learners with Chinese pronunciation.
>>
>>144218036
>>144217706
Chinese is really a written language. The spoken dialects are so different to each other than it's as unintelligible as say Spanish is to a Pole. Tibetan is the most different, being as different as Hungarian is to everyone else in Europe.

There's no easy way around it. You have to understand the language from the context of characters.

Foreign words and concepts are rendered either with approximation of characters based on sound (which means that the combination differs depending on the dialect) or by compounding characters base on meaning (which means that you differ in translation based on regime)

Both the Japanese and the Chinese use the Latin alphabet, like we do. It's just that the Japanese are a lot more used to.
>>
>>144218743
No. Not like you do.
The Chinese pinyin has intonation marks which you don't have, and the Japanese doesn't have it either. Your languages aren't tonal languages for one.
Cantonese Pinyin is different from Mandarin Pinyin due to them having 7 tones while mandarin have 5.

Writing a line in pinyin is not worth shit to a chinese reader.

>>
>>144241039
>I just realized this guy said "chance" in Engrish. Seems out of place in this setting, don't Japs have a word of their own for that?
It is likely they might have used that word to shorten the dialogue. It is noted that the Japanese script has trouble fitting the lines in before the scene changes.
(And of course, the original Japanese script had too much dialogue and the Butcher was told to cut it shorter. The dolls have limited facial expressions so long monologues look horrible on screen.)

It is also amusing that Butcher originally designed too many different unique areas, which was not a problem in anime because they are just background art. But in Puppetry it means physically building the film sets, and changes had to be made to get around that.

That sort of explains why the pipe guy was sitting under the same tree for the start and finish of the chapter. It allows them to not waste that set which would otherwise not get used again.
>>
Just curious, do they ever make reproductions of these dolls as merchandise?

I HAVE seen physical shops selling them. The ones with the classic TV series at least. However all the online stores haven't had any in stock for years. The Pili official site haven't had any for a while.

The real deal is so expensive that it is unlikely to be mass produced. The ones you get to buy are likely plastic instead of wood.

>Is this show dubbed in Japanese or Chinese? Where would you even find the original dubbed version?
Pili traditionally record the Taiwanese before the filming starts, while Japan traditionally dubs the dialogue after the show is already filmed. So they ended up doing both; Pili did their Taiwanese dub, film the show using their own dub as the basis, then send it to Japan where they add the Japanese dub on top of it.

Right now I have trouble finding the original Taiwanese dub. It seems even the version released in Mainland China is dubbed in Japanese.

(There is apparently some controversy with the Taiwanese dub, as they used the son of the original voice actor instead of the same guy who had been used for decades. And as usual the son is being treated critically as not being as good as his dad. Not very fair for him.)
>>
>>144241405
It's weird because they could have just used 機会 which means the same thing as "chance" and is also two syllables in Japanese.

>>144241887
Hopefully that shows up eventually. The Japanese dub is servicable, but Chinese will definitely make it worth watching again for authenticity purposes.

Part 3 is a lot more complicated. Set decades after Part 2. It's all related to the blacksword of Part 2. That sort of character would usually be the villain in a butcher show. He uses Kuuga's color coding, The villain dressed in white while the MC is dressed in black.

Well the fact is he is famous enough for the villain to know him. And of course the upcoming demoness hates his guts.

I say he is good enough as a person, he just rather someone else be the hero in his stead. Making him questionable is a way to justify why he is so overpowered.

That depends if the story is committed to the classic fantasy formula or not.

Oh yeah, there's a lot of really fucked up stuff in wuxia. I remember Louis Cha's books...

The MC goes on an adventure, meets a cute girl, decides to marry her and invites her over to meet his family. The during dinner conversation his dad suddenly forbids them from marrying because he discovers that the girl's mother is someone he porked way back when, and there's a high chance she's his half sister.

The MC gets understandably pissed off and runs away in despair, gets into some accidents and is rescued by another girl. More adventures ensure and then he founds out this girl is ALSO a half-sister, because MC's dad was a fucking manwhore who cheated on his wife all the damn time.

And then this keeps happening, the MC has like a harem of girls who all likes him and they keep turning out to be his half sisters.

And then at the end of the story...
MC's mom reveals to him on her death bed that since Dad kept cheating on her, she cucked him hard and MC is not actually his son, thus he could marry his whole harem and not worry about any incest.

Except that I'm pretty sure she cucked old Dad with his brother, so they're still cousins! But I guess that level of incest was okay in ancient china.

Well, it depends on your taste. Part 2 is basically a battle harem with an asshole super smart protagonist. Some highlights include learning martial arts by sparring with a giant condor. Said condor used to be pals with some long dead martial artist so the condor was one of the two only beings who know the martial arts he left behind. The other person is the MC of The Smiling, Proud Wanderer - aka the work where G Gundam's Master Asia/ Touhou Fuhai is from.

Another wuxia bullshit would be how the MC invented a martial art that only works when he's depressed. So when he got reunited with his waifu, he can't use that move anymore.

Part 3 is basically battle harem again, but this time you get your indecisive harem. However, this time, there's a yandere in his harem.

Personally, I enjoy them.

Speaking of Urobuchi and Condor Hero, there's also an old master who basically managed to build some bullshit maze to prevent intruders from entering his home. The author handwave some crap about his mastery of chinese astrology/ feng shui such that the terrain can supposedly 'move around' to confound people in the maze. Not sure if it's meant to be taken literally or metaphorically, but in tv adaptation just go the easy route and literally have trees moving around to block paths.

In other words, the old master has a freaking reality marble.

>Louis Cha
I think his works are tame and not as weird or controversial compared to Gu Long.

One of his work's premise is that the protagonist is raised in a den for criminals and his guardians include a gender bender, a cannibal and some other prolific killers who raise him with the plan of turning him into the biggest villain there is. Another work by him also features the protagonist committing adultery since the main female interest is already married.

I figure that basically if you're in chinese fiction you either have superpowers that you gained through drugs/ancient scrolls that no one else knows, a random screaming peasant about to get fucked by said demigod sage, or some powerful official with an army at your back and martial arts skills that could easily be fucking magic anyways.

>>144248058
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juedai_Shuangjiao

>>144247930
This is what I found surprising though. There's definitely interest of wuxia in Japan. The novels by Jin Yong (Not sure about Gu Long and Liang Yusheng) are available in Japanese and have quite a few different releases, including one with anime-ish illustrations and of course, as mentioned, there's people like Imagawa or Strongest Disciple Kenichi's author who clearly like the genre and yet there's very little actual adaptation of the novels.

At the very least, I think Nisio fags would enjoy Gu Long's works.

>>144248178
Well, Gu Long is more about the character interactions. The story tend to be more of a background thing, or at least there isn't quite as much plot focus than Jin Yong.

The notable movies are the trilogy, The Swordsman 1990, Swordsman 2 and The East Is Red, though they sort of do their own things (the plot is radically different from the novels). So if you want to get the actual story that's much more faithful to the novels, you're better off checking out the TV series. Junny you say that... Because even though this particular series has multiple voice actors, the classic series that airs in Taiwan IS voiced by a single person.

Obviously a small army of people control the puppets, but the voice is really just one guy. Thunderbolt Fantasy however break with tradition, with the Taiwanese dub of the female roles actually voiced by women for a change.

>>
>>144250011

>>

There are some fundamental ones, like the concept of using qi and qing gong (the ones where you see people jumping great heights, running on water aka the basis for wire-fu).

Also, things like Shaolin and Wu Dang clan related stuff are commonly used too, since those two are famous and have real life historical roots to draw from.

When it come to more modern wuxia, there's also a tendency to reference stuff from the Big 3 authors (Jin Yong, Gu Long and Liang Yusheng). For instance, if you've watched Kung Fu Hustle, there's the Toad Style/Technique (https://youtu.be/1hRD4nIsIWQ?t=1m13s), which is from Jin Yong's Condor Heroes Part 1 and 2.

If same novel author, maybe.
Video games have it figured out for us.
Each faction/school have their own skills.
These skills can be sorted into:
1. Unarmed. Like different forms and techniques of palms/fists.
2. Weapons. Each faction is at least famous for one weapon like Shaolin bo-staves.
3. 輕功(something like maneuver/dodging) Like it when you see people flying around in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
4. 內功 A way to use Qi or 內力(inner force). Stacking up inner force can sometimes boost overall ability like >>144235937 葵花宝典 makes the eunuch faster than anyone else.
I am sure I am missing some categories of skills though it's generally like this.

I wouldn't say it's something you see in most wuxia novels, but it's definitely something that wuxia fags would have no problem accepting or getting.

It's like... if you've read enough battle manga, you sort of get the general concept of how things work even in different works. Doesn't matter if it's Stands and Ripples, reiatsu, nen or chakra, you sort of just 'get it'.

He's basically Rance. He had basically raped and manipulated his love interests into becoming his wives. That and the enormous amount of plot contrivances he needed. It's the most un-wuxia-like MC, which is a bit jarring.

If I were to compare with western fiction, wuxia = low fantasy, xian xia = high fantasy, though some will say that xian xia is basically taking western fantasy (regardless of high/low) and giving it an eastern twist. As pointed out by >>144254208 thunderbolt fantasy would be considered xian xia if you want to get pedantic since it has talks of demons and downright magical artefacts. The problem of course is that with the intro of the term, it will arguably retroactively classify something like Journey to the West not as wuxia but xian xia.

Since we discussed TV shows, are there any wuxia manga/manhua worth reading?

All Pili shows air with Chinese subs as default. In fact most TV shows in Taiwan have subs on at all times, unless they changed it in the last ten years after I left.

If we judge it by the visuals alone, it's the most PILI thing about Thunderbolt fantasy, the song gives it a totally different feel though.

So far Thunderbolt fantasy feels like an anime done in puppets, the style of urobuchi also shows. The fight scenes are short, there is little beam spam so far, and a lot more dialogue.

How do characters get power ups in chinese fighting shows

>How do characters get power ups in chinese fighting shows
Through equipment. That's why they fight over legendary swords. Otherwise there is only the slow way of learning new moves and growing older. In some rare incidences it is possible for power to be transfered from one person to another.
>>
>>144277610

Learning advanced secret techniques and cultivating internal energy. Young protags tend to lack the latter due to not having trained as long, so their hits lack power even if they have some skill.
>>
>>144277869
>Talking about swords, if she's the guard and her brother the hilt then who's the blade?
The blade is back at the ruins of what was her home, guarded by a powerful forcefield. The guard and hilt are the keys to unlock the blade.

(And one of the fan artists joked about how people expected Tanhi needing to die to drop the sword guard, like some game RPG monster drop.)

>That's why they fight over legendary swords. Otherwise there is only the slow way of learning new moves and growing older.
I don't have much wuxia under my belt, but Guo Jing from Condor Heroes learned a bunch of advanced moves from top tier masters pretty quickly. 18 Dragon Palms, Vacant Fists, Ambidexterity and memorized the Nine Ying manual. Or maybe they made the adaptation I watched just made it seem like little time passed.

Also, he got a permanent chi boost from drinking the blood of a giant serpent a poison user was breeding for that reason.

Yeah, there is that. But one's ability to actually use the technique depends on one's skill level. So that's why heroes tend to earn new moves from scrolls after days while week villains take years and still end up weaker.
