You realize that I'm not making any money by translating, right?
Fuck, I knew someone would post that.
It's always had regular monthly updates. Just the occasional break maybe twice a year.
Yeah, I'm looking forward to how Yukimura will end Thorfinn's quest for a life without violent-means, since the colonization ultimately does end in failure.
This manga got so fucking stupid after the time skip.
>get to vinland
>everyone else dead
>Thorfinn conveniently finds good native americans
>his dick is big so he gets 30 wives
Thorfinn Happy and Historically Accurate Ending
Hild almost became like Thorfinn was after Askeladds death. Empty and without purpose, really like how all these affected fates intertwine into this circle of death and hate which has been the topic since farmland.
>people's faces when I tell them the first thanksgiving was a celebration between allied indians and settlers who had just murdered the fuck out of a hostile tribe
Hild is so fucking hot God.
Finally someone beats Thorfinn's sister.
Clearly you've only been reading the Farmland Saga part of it. It used to have qt 3.14s.
Thanks for the fast scanlations, Hox. A+++, would read from again.
I stand by my assessment, though I will admit it's very close, Ylfa is a goddess.
Im gonna hope and I mean really fucking hope she joins the party
but only to die and then einar dies and thorfinn finally wakes uo and goes back to his old ways, plays on the whole no one ever truly changes trope
You can see the exact moment where the tsundere sets in.
Reminds me of a historical incident where a group of Norse settlers had given the Native Americans dairy products as a gift in order to earn their favor, which only resulted in the Native Americans returning and attacking them since they were lactose intolerant and had thought that the Norse had tried to poison them.
That...is actually kinda funny.
Imagine if the Chinese tried to befriend the natives in the new world, and then they come back with their tomahawks to kill everyone because their chill fried rice gave them all burning anus diarrhoeas
Call me stupid but I just now realize her right eye is messed up.
This shit is getting painfully bad. "I haven't forgiven you/I don't believe you've changed so I'm going to join/watch you from here on out" is some dumb obvious cliche writing. Guaranteed future "Thorfinn is about to reverse to homicidal self and Hild shouts some shit about how he mustn't since he was the one who taught her how to live her life correctly again".
I guess we will know what happens when Thorfinn gets into shit with the natives in the future. I mean they are a spiritual people to begin with! I'll be surprised if the god damn totems don't uproot themselves like treants and stop their people from slaughtering Thorfinn's party.
Why do you say it's ghosts? I think it's simply a representation of Hild's memories of her father and teacher and what they told her. Or do you also think that Thorfin is being attacked by real zombies on this page? >>133953939
>tfw Vinland Saga is actually a pretty faithful adaption of Canute the Greats story, all things considered
Never would have expected a Jap to adapt some obscure part of my countries history.
He's not bowing. If you we're in his shoes, you would do the same. Wounded legs, almost out of blood, body getting weaker, and head feels heavy. You would just spontaneously drop your head in that position.
Fuck all this "killing is horrible and you should feel bad forever" nonsense. Why did the author go in this faggot direction?
I want based young Thorfinn back. Who kills niggas and takes names. Askeladd should have never died.
Yeah, it's obvious that he was barely conscious at that point.
I'm happy that Thorfinn displayed some character development and stopped being a teenage edgelord.
Young Thorfinn was a retarded tool for an entertainingly villainous old guy and a complete failure of a student whenever somebody tried to teach him anything meaningful about life(or about combat, that idiot repeatedly lost in all his duels with Askeladd because of some taunts). And what's the point of having that retard back when the entertainingly villainous old guy is already dead?
Manga is a visual medium. The author thus visually displays what's in the characters' minds. That doesn't mean that there are literal ghosts floating around.
What the fuck is even happening right now?
He'll survive. The characters in the manga have always been superhuman after all.
But it is okay to roll a king's head if you're Askeladd and you're ready for the consequences.
But the ghosts from the past plot is a bullshit plot. I'd understand if it was Thorfinn's as it is the manifestation of his guilt, but what about Hild's? She's turning tsundere because of what? Because she simply heard "muh thorfinn is different than the past thorfinn" reasoning? That's unbelievable.
>But it is okay to roll a king's head if you're Askeladd and you're ready for the consequences.
I am talking about Swen's head that made Canute kill his brother and usurp the throne
People back then are self sufficient, and I'm sure they can just make poison from herbs.
I Hild's case, I'm pretty sure she keeps poisons in her belongings, but knowing that she never kill people, she would never use it on people.
Well, I guess old man could've taught her what to not eat or touch in the forest. Still, I don't see any reason for her to be bluffing. She's fucked up in the head, after all. Or was, till she got healed by a magical ghosts of acceptance.
Reason why asked about the price is because I recall nobility paying big coins for assassinations due to to poison's price, but that was all movies/books and I don't even remember what century it was.
How long will Vinland Saga last? I mean at this pace it will take years for them to screw over the Greeks to get the money for the expedition to America, and what happens once they get there should really be the meat of the series.
>people's faces when I tell them the first thanksgiving was a celebration between allied indians and settlers who had just accidentally murdered the fuck out of another tribe with smallpox blankets
One person believed me once.
That's what Yukimura said he aims for.
Things Author rarely get their predictions right.
Oda (One Piece) said he only wanted 400 chapters or so to tell the whole story, look at where now, 800+ and still counting.
The dude from Pastel (some stupid romance manga that I followed for some reason) said he wanted 18 Volumes, he is at Volume 43 and the main couple still needs a huge build up to even start making out.
>Oda (One Piece) said he only wanted 400 chapters or so to tell the whole story, look at where now, 800+ and still counting.
That's because he is padding the shit out of the story.
Even ntrguy looks like a beta in pastel
You don't have an argument either, follow your own advice and stop shitting things up here.
Yukimura is Japanese, he's probably getting this pacifism stuff from Buddha.
>You don't have an argument either
mangaka completely changed the theme, tone, and mood 50ish chapters in and left readers completely blueballed. That's the argument, he should have split it into 2 different series, prequel and sequel if he wanted to do that
>said he wanted 18 Volumes, he is at Volume 43 and the main couple still needs a huge build up to even start making out
Sounds more more like his editor took his family hostage and he's at gunpoint 24/7.
I disagree with your subjective opinion on this matter. The story works fine the way it is, and the only reason you would want it to be split is because you're an edgy manchild.
No need to reply anymore.
If you didn't see something like this coming, then you weren't capable of reading the subtext of the prolog. Maybe not to this extent, but there was definitely going to be a big change all the way back when we first learned about Thors.
Yeah. Thorfin was just a kid blinded by his desire for revenge, who had literally never even thought about what he was going to do with his life if he ever succeeded in killing Askeladd. It makes perfect sense that he underwent a major shift once he got out of puberty and the one thing that he had lived for ceased to be possible.
He was also more or less a villain. The point was, he was not a good person, nor were any of his compatriots. A common theme between Vinland Saga and Vagabond is the idea that warrior societies are misguided at their roots.
And Thorkell, the character who enjoys this way of life the most, comes across like a complete psychopath. The way he so honestly and eagerly enjoys slaughtering people makes him seem like a small child playing a game it really likes. (Which is what makes him frightening.)
Right, Thorkell is a foil for Thors. Both are fearsome warriors, but the one who is shown as being "correct" is the one who managed to see the futility of a warrior culture, while the one who feels left behind is the one enamored with it.
I get the feeling that Thorkell never grew up. He's like a child playing a game when in battle. The way he so innocently enjoys butchering people is what makes him a complete monster in my view.
We knew this was going to happen from the second she got more than a 2 page flashback.
I'm just glad the build-up to it is finally over and we can move on with the story.
Look at that face.
>bitch better not kill him or you're changing my diapers from now on
He only butchers warriors, because it's the culture of the vikings. You were never shown him pillaging and raiding, all he does is seek battles against people who can fight. It just happens that he shits on them so hard it's like a child breaking a sandcastle.
Only reason he ever kills in 'cold blood' is because he dislikes pussies who have killed yet try to back off when they are clearly on the opposing end, which leaves a bad taste in his mouth. Nothing childish or innocent about that, it's just a mentality for a warrior of the times.
Thors may be centuries ahead of his time, but he wasn't right at all. By your logic would PETA be 'right' if they were sent back in time to try and 'change' cavemen so that they don't hunt animals for food anymore while saber tooth tigers preyed upon them? Yeah exactly.
Thors ultimately did nothing to propel peace, which makes him a far bigger loser than Thorfinn, who is already a massive loser compared to Canute, and even that guy fucked it all up because he had no end game plan after his death nor does he even produce one damn thing when uniting the North Sea Empire. If we compare it to the Roman Empire or even Qin Empire, Canute left behind jack shit for whoever succeeded that short lived dynasty, though in the Roman's case the savages did do the full retard thing and burn it all down but that's their own stupidity not the Roman's. Liu Bang just took the wall, road, and even the legal system and just spruced it up with Confucianism to sell it to the masses and not only benefited himself but the whole nation.
Being filled with idealism and selfishness for that ideal doesn't make you a saint, even if that idealism is for peace. It just makes you an idiot with good intentions. Know what's a stereotype for idiot with good intentions? Soccer moms.
The way Thorkell so obviously enjoys killing people is what makes him so horrifying.
Thors realized that waging war to bring peace is self-defeating and simply opted out. He was able to live a peaceful life until his past caught up with him. And Canut comes across as a huge hypocrite due to the disconnect between his stated goals and his methods. A good example of that is how he agrees to have the slave girl body double of his mortally wounded and then tells his men to take as good care of her as possible.
Glad somebody else agrees. I dropped this manga from this chapter. I don't care it's not action, war and vikings. It's just they replaced it with the most pretentious killing-is-bad story. I didn't sign up for a novel I already read from grade school.
Obviously murder is bad. The story has nothing to say I haven't heard or read before. If the only way you can rationalize criticism of this series by saying everyone dislikes it is edgy, go for it, enjoy being a retard.
I'm somewhat disappointed that the standoff ended somewhat predictably, in a way that reminded me of shonen shit. I guess this story is really trying to push the whole redemption shit, but it just seems so heavy handed and out of place. Really consider dropping the manga at this point, if all of the conflict will be resolved due to the same kind of predictable bullshit we saw this chapter.
He used to word innocently to describe the way Thorkell kills, not the people that Thorkell kills.
I really agree that Thors is a loser, he fought with too much compassion. It actually pisses me off the way he looked down on fighting and the people he fought with. He was too selfish, he held his own bullshit morals above anything else. He bought a slave with two feet in the grave at an extravagant price, which could have easily ruined his family. Even when ambushed by Askeladd and his gang, he didn't even fight back with lethal force, which endangered people that more or less rely on him to protect them, including his own son.
Does Thorkell really enjoy killing? If he enjoyed killing, then he wouldn't have stopped killing. I'd say he is looking for fights, conflicts, and a battle where he will die in, more than anything else. I'd say he goes into the fight with a respect/reverence for the fight, and not fighting to kill is simply disrespectful.
Canut isn't a hypocrite. You can't just hug everyone and get your feelings to touch their feelings to make a utopian society in an era where everything is decided by war. I mean, you can, since this is fiction, and the author can do whatever the fuck he wants, but, realistically, it doesn't work that way. Comparing Thors to Canut is laughable. One of them didn't do anything to truly improve the world, and let his own morals be his death. The other is actively trying to make the world a better place, even at the cost of dirtying his own hands. That isn't hypocrisy, that's sacrifice.
