DUMB GENERAL

This thread is for fucking mongs like myself who have stupid questions.

Question 1, if ice is a dense, more concentrated form of water, how does it rise in water?

Question 2. If oxygen is required to sustain fire and plants are the source of oxygen, why are there no plants on the sun?
53 posts and 7 images submitted.
>>
>>9012204
Answer 1: Water is unique in that it is actually less dense as a solid than a liquid. That is why is floats.

Answer 2: Because the Sun isn't made of fire.
>>
>>9012204
The sun is made of lava dude not fire

oh look, the buttmad Creationist is back. you kinda disappeared for a while after you got caught posting hilariously bad photoshops of cave paintings. you okay bro?

but no, the eye-searing bottom part of the image is not correct. what the top part is saying is that we have more fossils, and more complete fossils, of early humans than we do of T. rex. this shouldn't be surprising, seeing as Tyrannosaurus lived ~70 Mya and the earliest humans lived only ~2 Mya.
and while fossils may only be individual dots, their distribution (figuratively speaking) makes connecting them pretty straightforward, especially when also considering molecular evidence. when you have a steady series of apes that gradually become more and more human-like as you get into more and more recent strata, it doesn't take a genius to see what's going on. pic sorta related.
(also, when you're connecting BETWEEN multiple dots rather than extending out away from them, it's an INTERPOLATION rather than an EXTRAPOLATION. I don't expect a Creationist to understand the difference, but those of us with actual intelligence should.)

Notice how the one on the left has a more upright posture, despite being less "related" to us in evolutionary terms.

Is 'leaky gut' (also known as 'intestinal permeability') a legitimate medical condition?

>>
>>9009434
Let's see. Dr. Josh Axe, DNM, DC, CNS is a certified doctor of natural medicine, doctor of chiropractic and clinical nutritionist with a passion to help people get healthy by using food as medicine.

all that is fine, but look into his distinctions.
http://vitalitymagazine.com/article/nd-dnm-whats-the-difference/

I'm not saying he's a fraud, but he's a sensationalist who uses his name to sell shit, like Dr. Oz. im sure some of the things he advocates do work but probably not for the reasons he says. To answer your question, yes leaky gut (increased intestinal permeability) is a legitimate medical condition. But selling people that they have that is a stretch, look at how fucking broad those symptoms are

Why would you think that wormholes exist in the first place? In reality miraculously shortening distances isn't possible no matter how we look at it. Therefore it leads me to a conclusion that it's absolutely wrong.

How much of bullshit is this shilled mbti test?
106 posts and 18 images submitted.
>>
I actually think MBTI is useful, just not for any scientific purpose. It doesn't tell you much about who you are, but it gives you a lot of insight on who you see yourself as.
>>
>>9000120
It could be helpful in guiding those who want to work in a certain field so if you want to say be a performer you might wanna amplify those qualities. If you have a really stubborn personality that won't change it could help you identify best vocations
>>
>>9000125
What he said basically. The test is not reliable, but at least you can figure out who you think you might be in a "ideal, healthy state" and what archetype you want to live up to. There's nothing wrong with some guidance

Just don't treat the test like a special snowflake competition

Any linguists lurking on /sci/?. I read more and more authors trying to use language processing as a means of discriminating between theoretical models. Do you see this as the first step towards a breakdown of the competence/performance dichotomy?

The temporal adverbs don't.

I think we can assume he's always talking about adjectives since the paper is about quantifiers, which adverbs have nothing to do with.

Hey /sci/, high school is over for me and now i have to choose between 2 career options. First, I can become a programmer. I can find a job easily since most of my relatives are working in high profile companies but I'm not really into programming and I find it lame. Second, I can become an mathematician and actually do what I want to do but I will most luckily be jobless. If anyone is or has studied in mathematics what was your experience and what do you think i should choose?

Whats the easiest way for a brainlet to calculate the breathability of an atmosphere if given:

1. Atmospheric pressure
2. % of O2 in Atmosphere
23 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
Breath-ability isn't just about O2 content. Even if you have ideal O2 levels, you're going to have trouble breathing if the rest of it is nerve toxin or scalding hot steam
>>
>>9016923
understood but if no toxins exist at enough concentration to harm.....

like say an atmospheric mixed of just N2 and O2....

how do I find the threshold of hypoxia or hyperoxia?

also does air pressure effect the toxicity of CO2?
>>
>>9016920
The percentage of o2 in air is always 21, what changes is the amount of molecules of air on a same volume at different pressures.
>P1V1 = P2V2
So you need to research what's the least volume of oxygen that's livable, then plug that in and solve.

>artificial intelligence
>deep learning
>machine learning

Are these as groundbreaking as popsci articles are making them out to be or is it all one big meme?

Isn't it all just execution of fancy linear algorithms with the 'value' attributed to certain inputs 'tweaked' randomly until certain values match an outcome determined by a human operator? How is this 'intelligent'?

How can it 'learn' when there is no physical rewiring of neurons (like our brain) to encode new understandings?

I have no doubt it's useful in the same vain that using a calculator to calculate 138181 x 8389393 is useful. But I don't see it replacing human involvement because it's not truly learning or understanding. It's executing human made algorithms to match a human made outcome.

I'm also a dumb dumb so tell me I'm wrong /sci/

None of this actually exists or what? I don't get it.
33 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
>>9016047
no it doesn't mean that, holograph refers to space being encoded on lower dimensional strings or something like that, don't ask me to explain it because string theory is a mumbo jumbo full of jargon that I don't understand, but i know enough to see that you're thinking of something wrong
>>
The underlying ingormation is stored in less than three dimensions, but it interacts nonlocally to give the appearance of three spatial dimensions.
>>
it works more like what a computer does, a video game is written on 2d 1's and 0's but is projected into 3d.

What if the human brain is so complex in its design, that all the individual parameters that come in play creating a brain, like chemestry, genes, neurons etc, can differ ever so slightly, yet cause huge effect for overall brain functioning.

And what if, what we define as an 『personality』is just and inevitable side effect that emerges due from all of these irragiularities in different brains.

I'm a pleb, am i right?

Note, this is an undergraduate program. Also country of study would be Australia.

you could have perfect grades and still fall a mile short of being accepted. you do not need perfect grades per say but you would have to make it up with overwhelming evidence that you are someone the MBA program wants
