My guess is that they basically see jumping on this political bandwagon as a way to feel accepted and liked, something which hasn't come easy to them in the past. Because of their moderate IQs and lack of study of what is truly happening in the U.S., they are unaware that liberals are actually attacking the possibility of them ever attaining the things that they think cuddling up to the left will get them. They don’t realize liberals hate them and see their taking of their birthright position in society- as husbands, fathers, and leaders in their careers- as a thing to be destroyed at all costs. They don’t yet realize that liberals, if they win, will force them to live life as groveling cucks that makes not only them, but all people around them, miserable wretches.
While they are young now, they will progress down the rails (((they))) have laid for them- agreeing that their whiteness should disqualify them from that promotion, and that their maleness shouldn’t allow them to be assertive with women (leading to them becoming a sad, masturbating sacks),and that their privilege means they should pay a higher tax rate.
Then, one day, they will realize that those things were lies. They will realize that liberals tricked them, that they cut your their own balls off and disgraced themselves. Liberals pushed them, but they drew the knife. And then they will become infinitely more hateful and resentful than anyone on the alt-right.
And then they’ll be here forever.

The extremes as you call it may be a minority but they control all the power (media, university, even tech companies apparently). Most of their power comes from the fact that the moderates are terrified of being called sexist or racist or whatever.
