was stationed in Japan. JGSDF engineer battalion shared the base with us. they usually brought out a rifle or two for open case events. They had them chained down to the table and it was hard to hold them properly.

We also never had any events where we shoot for qualification with each other's rifles. Like they do in Germany. The rules won't even allow us to let a JGSDF soldier that was shadowing our unit, to shoot one of our weapons. When he or she was tagging along for our ranges.

There aren't many sources available on the internet. That information is from Wikipedia and the source is a book called "Unileipää, kuolonvettä, spiidiä - Huumeet Suomessa 1800-1950" (Sleepbread, deathwater, speed - Drugs in Finland 1800-1950). It's a legit book and won a couple of awards here but there could have been a typo somewhere. 0.5 g Aspirin would sound a little more reasonable.

Axes are way more versatile. For example, you can use them for something outside of combat.

Anyhow, look how long this thing is. Now look how long a sword is. If you aren't armoured and/or shielded, you're going to get cut up bad. Also, this is a sidearm. As is an axe, a sword, etc. Your main weapon is a lance, spear, some type of polearm. Spears and axes/hammers on a long stick are pretty good against armour, too.

Anon, you ever held a hammer or a sledge in your hands and tried swinging it around? Imagine having a sledge, some 8lbs in weight and as top-heavy as things get. Now imagine a guy with a 3lb sword that's as long if not longer and can be manipulated with one hand compared to you flying after your sledge. Have a wild guess who wins. Weapons are light. You get fucken tired after a sparring session waving a 2,5lb sword around. Imagine doing that with a sledge. Sure, warhammers are a thing. They are light as fuck compared to tool hammers.

Axes are in my opinion more effective than swords at doing stuff, but they have two serious drawbacks when in combat: They are shorter, again. And they are pretty bad for defending yourself. Again. Both of these problems are solved easily with shields. Shields are fucking awesome. And they work really, really well with axes and the like. That, or you armour the fuck up and get yourself a two-handed axe. Example: Ye olde viking age. Dudes who were not professional retainers or simply didn't have money to spare got an axe and/or a large knife and a spear, and a shield and mayhaps winter clothing to protect themselves. While the infamous "Dane axes" were the armaments of dudes who had a social status to uphold and money, and the best way in that time to gain glory for yourself, and fuck up the enemy, is to wave around a big sharp thing. To obtain it in that time, you got to have money. To survive in enviroment where there's sharp steel things going at you without a shield in your hand, you need armour, thus lot more money, thus more social status. So the guys back then who could afford having having such things were the best. Now, mind you, they still had a sword or an one handed axe and a shield across their back if they needed it.

Back to the other question. Halberd is exactly the that. So is a poleaxe. Look it up. It's a spear, an axe and sometimes a hammer or a backspike in one.
