As someone who wrote his PhD thesis on how Socrates is completely unknown and forgotten, and all we know and attribute to him is actually Plato using his name to push his own ideas forward, I will give you one advice: Don't include sock Muppets in your visual presentation, 3 in 4 committee members don't appreciate it.
Also don't eat mexican food the day before.

LOL, that was epic

Every night Brutus, before he could sleep would count his smarties collection. He had 3798 smarties and he'd count them all and only then could he sleep.

So one night he's heading back to his apartments and he sees Caesar exiting them. Being best friends they wish each other good night and Brutus goes in to count his smarties. He counts them up but is shocked when he only has 3795 so he counts them again but again he's missing 3. He's deeply disturbed but goes to bed any way.

The next day he's walking about and some senators come up to him and say we're all going up to the Senate to kill Caesar, want to come? So he agrees and off they go.

So Caesar comes out and one by one the senators all walk up to him and stab him. Finally it's Brutus' turn. He goes forward slowly and Caesar's eyes look up at him and whisper, 'Et tu, Brutus?', to which Brutus replies, 'No you didn't you ate 3 you dirty fucker'!

Can /his/ tell me about the history of police. Reading history books you'll see mentions of how police forces didn't in this or that time period, if there was any official security at all then it was handled by soldiers. How did the police department come about? Where and when did this idea of a crime-fighting and investigation force untied to the military come about? Is there a book that deals with this subject? Best I could find is early criminology, but nothing about the genesis of the police itself.

I only know a little about the history British policing (i think the Brits had the first modern police anyway) from my law days. But basically, crime was often left to the victim or their family to prosecute. Of course this was terribly unfair to poor citizens who were not educated or able to afford representation.

As a result, vigilantism was pretty common. The military was utilised for keeping public order and the State was involved in crimes such as treason etc, but on the whole private prosecutions was the norm.

For example, 'theif-takers' were pretty common. Bascially, they are just guys who apprehended thiefs and prosecuted them on behalf of paying victims.

There were Parish Constables as well, but there weren't really police in the modern sense, but they were certianly the forerunner to Robert Peel's Metropolitan Police Service that was introduced in around 1830.

These were the first salaried, professional police officers in the UK and Europe, (Maybe the world? I'm not sure) that we would today recognise as police and perform pretty much the same role.
>>
it started with cities and with the state seizing the right to use violence, about 19th century

before that it was linked to local judicial functions, you needed to catch a thief, you got the sherrif(or the equivalent of it whatever it was called anywhere) of the county with a few men and that was it

in europe it was divided into cities and countrysides

gendarmerie on the countryside, a more militaristic approach as the enviroment was more rigid, police in cities

At least in America, I'm pretty sure policing really started proper with the Pinkerton's in the mid-19 century.

Apparently they were originally hired to protect gold mine interests by private companies, and after a while I think states and counties realized it was a bad idea having private companies do that and raised taxes to employ sheriffs and deputies.

I'm especially aiming this at Spanish anons as I'm not aware of any good ones in English media.

Philosophical astonishment - describe your feeling of it.

I experience it as a time-numbing pleasure in which my need for definitive answers somehow coexists with my desire to remain mystified.

> Oh yes, indeed, Socrates, I often wonder like mad what these things can mean; sometimes when I'm looking at them I begin to feel quite giddy.

> I dare say you do, my dear boy... For this is an experience which is characteristic of a philosopher, this wondering: this is where philosophy begins and nowhere else. And the man who made Iris [the rainbow, messenger between earth and heaven] the child of Thaumas [which means "wonder"] was perhaps no bad genealogist.

Childhood is accepting Platon's account of Socrates.
Adolescence is accepting Xenophon's
Retardation is accepting Aristophanes'
Wokehood is realizing that Antisthenes was the true student of Socrates, and that Cynicism was the true school of Socrates.

so, whose history would you say is the least important of all of recorded human activity?

the baltics I say, or maybe those internal asian nations like Kyrgyzstan and the like

Surely every people has a history, but they're not all possessing relevant impact on the rest of the world

Aboriginies. I'm far more interested in European or post-colonial history than any others, but when idiots claim Native Americans or Asians never did anything I'll argue in their defense. But Aboriginies are the one culture who literally did nothing. The only impact they have ever had was as a small obstacle for the british colonization of the continent they never used.
>>

oh blimey, I didn't even think about the history of aboriginal peoples, that's like considering the history of deer, it simply wouldn't come to mind as having existed

How do the people who select those based on merit to advance advance themselves?

MERITOCRACY IS A FLAWED SYSTEM OF GOVERNANCE; THE MOST TECHNICALLY ABLE, OR THE MOST APT AT ACHIEVING CONCRETE GOALS, ARE NOT NECESSARILY THE NOBLEST, SO, TO ESTABLISH MERIT AS THE PRIME HIERARCHICAL CRITERION IS SUBOPTIMAL; NOBILITY, AND EXCELLENCE, SHOULD BE THE PRIME HIERARCHICAL CRITERIA —ARISTOCRACY, NOT MERITOCRACY.
>>
>>3040356
Read Micheal Young's Rise of Meritocracy when he coined that word. Basically elites buy into the meritocracy without actually enforcing it so they shed any noblesse oblige their privilege brings.

Also equality of opportunity does not mean giving everyone in an unequal society equal opportunities
