Because it's enormously more flexible. If you need to have a few guys turn around to deal with an unexpected threat on the flank, a few guys just turn around. If you wanted to do the same with a phalanx, the entire formation of 256 men needs to turn, or you open up a gap which leaves you horribly vulnerable, since the individual pikes are too long to defend yourself with, and you're relying on the guy 2-3 ranks back to protect you.

It's also pretty bad in any sort of rough terrain where the formation can't hold, and thus relies on greater coordination with supporting arms, since the world is not in fact a flat, featureless plain and you usually have to deal with that at some point. Given how bad battlefield communication was in the ancient world, really tight interlinking was often a liability; sure, if you had someone like Alexander you could pull it off, but you often didn't have an Alexander at the helm.

Fuck no. It was an absolute catastrophe. With Pearl Harbour Japanese defeat was assured. The U.S wasn't going to immediately come to terms as they had hoped, instead it would bring the full might of its absurd industrial machine against bumfuck Japan and bring them to their knees.

Arguable.

The Japs ignored many strategically important targets like command centers, fuel storage and processing facilities, submarine bases, naval repair yards, power stations, ammo magazines, etc. Also, none of the three USN fleet carriers were present at Pearl Harbor, which were high priority targets for two major attack groups in both the first and second waves. Sinking these carriers was critically important for the Japanese to have control in the Pacific.

Their biggest success was damaging or destroying eight battleships. Despite this achievement, the USN was able to raise and/or repair six and return them to service. Aside from the battleships, three destroyers and three cruisers were damaged in the attack, and all six were repaired and returned to service. The three other auxiliary ships hit (minelayer, repair ship, seaplane tender) were also put back into action.

So 13 of the 16 ships hit by the Japanese were repaired and returned to service. Submarine pens, fuel depots, oil refineries, power stations, shipyards, etc. all survived unscathed as well as all three fleet carriers.

From the point of view of preparing you for the real world, writing long-winded shit is the second most important thing school teaches you.

From the point of view of furthering knowledge, it forces you to reflect and what you've learnt and thereby internalise it. The paper itself is not important. What's important is that in trying to fill three pages of shit, you are forced to think about the subject.

What i'm actually thinking of is how to turn this three sentence answer, into three pages.
And that means focusing on rewording it to be as vague and wordy as possible.

For example something like:
UDP provides checksums for data integrity, and port numbers for addressing different functions at the source and destination of the datagram.

Turns into:
One day when I was sitting around talking with my friends we eventually came around to the subject of UDP. Many people don't even know what UDP is but in fact it can represent all of humanities great advancements if you really think about it. Me and my friends had an interesting conversation on UDP and it all started off with.....

Literally just rambling on about made up filler not related to the topic at all.
