SM35 - A Curry-zy Beautiful Battle! The Dance of Rarantes!! (July 27th)
>As part of an extracurricular lesson, Satoshi and the others are made to gather the ingredients for Alola Curry, a traditional Akalan dish. They immediately join up with Mao and start searching for the ingredients, but the task turns out to be less than easy when they encounter an herds of Digda and Karikiri during their search.

Yes. Ash is competing in at least 2 trials (not sure if Alolan Marowak counts as a fire trial) and then gets to the Grand Trial by Episode 36.

While people don't like the series to drag out, rushing isn't good either. Ash's Pokemon barely got any development since Litten was caught. Ash's friends each barely got an episode or two of development.

This is the supposed halfway point of the series, and we have little to show for it except it being rushed.

People were waiting nearly half a year for Akala's trials to start. Now Akala's trials will be resolved in about a month (or a little over, if Ash loses to Olivia here, which I hope so his team gets some development and training in).

People seem to forget that the player was on Melemele Island for quite a while before heading to Akala Island. We're also following the required Trials and missions. Lana goes fishing with Ash, Mallow is making curry it seems, then the Marrowak is during the festival which will likely have dancing.

The thing with Johto is that there was filler hell.

SM is more story and plot driven. We still have a lot to do on Akala following Ashs Grand Trial. We still need:

>Graveyard

There's a lot left to do. Remember Ash and his friends are on Akala for class, not just for Ash to do his trials. Even after completing the trials, Ash still has classes on the island to do. Probably that is.

If Ash beats Olivia, he would have completed two islands' worth of trials. Olivia in SM is equivalent to four badges in other games. And this is 36 episodes in, assuming Ash wins.

His SM team doesn't have much development outside of their personalities.

Rowlet: Caught in SM004. Used in battle in SM008. Used in Trials in SM009 and SM010. Had episode in SM016. Now fighting Olivia in SM036.

Rockruff: Caught in SM015. Used in battle in SM019. Fights Team Rocket in SM023 and SM024. Encounters Gladion in SM027. Encounters Olivia's Lycanroc in SM030.

Litten: Encountered in SM007 and SM016. Caught in SM021. Masters Fire Fang in SM022. Used by Delia in SM024.

That is barely anything at all. Ash's Pokemon in other series had considerably more development around this time.

As for SM being rushed, I wanted the Akala trials to start, but I don't want them to be back-to-back (meaning there is hardly any buildup to Ash training his team to fight Olivia).

Hopefully Ash loses so he actually works on his team but this is ridiculous.

As for character development. Each of the protagonists other than Ash only get about one or two episodes worth of development during this story arc.

Ash trains his Pokemon a lot. A LOT in Sun and Moon, arguably the most he's ever done in a region to this point.

If what we've seen is right, Ash trains his Pokemon nearly every morning, every day at Pokemon School during the "Exercise" portion of the day, as well as training with Kaki every now and then. To say his Pokemon haven't developed as battlers isn't entirely correct. They train a ton we just don't see all of it.

I do hope Ash loses against Olivia and has to re challenge her. Maybe having a training arc with Rockruff to defeat her. As for Ashs friends, they have a lot more depth then most of his other companions and rivals that he's had. I'm not saying they're akin to PAul, Sere-na, or Clemont for instance. But these friends of his who Ash goes to school with. We know their families, we know all of their personalities, their goals, what they do in their spare time, how their relationships are with each other. That's more then we've seen in the past.

I'll use Alexa as an example. Alexa had BW and XY to develop, but she never really became more then "the woman who brought Ash to Kalos" despite having a fair amount of episodes dedicated to her. Sophocles at this point is a much better developed character then her, when arguably he has had less dedicated episodes to him.

Without a doubt when Lusamine is introduced she'll acquire another goal that involves her family. Given how she acted towards Gladion about him coming home. If Nebby becomes Lillie's Puni-chan expect her to gain a goal of taking care of/learning more about Nebby. Also, in regards to her touching Pokemon. Her focus episodes, which she's probably had the most of aside from Ash, has all been about her and her fear. To see her progressing in being able to touch them shouldn't be a surprise.

Sophocles wants to learn more about Electric Pokemon and incorporate them into his science. His is the weakest goal of the group. He'll be essential in Ash mastering AshPikachu given how interested he's become in Ash and Pikachus strength.

The ideal reason for the speedy trials is that Ash fails to defeat Olivia the first time he challenges her. So what he winds up doing is going to do some classic training with his Pokemon somewhere on Akala alone. But winds up coming across Gladion and his Type:Null. The two battle, Pikachu VS Null and Rockruff VS Lycanroc.

Hopefully by the time episode 36 airs we'll have some news about USM in regards to a possible 3rd evo line for Rockruff. If not by then, it'll be surprising not having it evolve against Olivia.
