Also there's always the possiblity of Ash being allowed to switch Pokemon mid battle, I can see Rowlet losing early thanks to it's weakness to rock, and Pikachu jumps in to save the day.

Really can't give you an answer to that one buddy. This saga had literally so much potential, even the base premise. It was destined to go to shit as soon as Ash lost the League. The premise could've been about Ash taking vacation after winning the Pokemon League, getting the well deserved rest he needed, and traveling the island, doing trials, to truly be recognized as a trainer befitting of the role as Champion. And then all the while, traveling with Lillie and helping her develop from her shitty childhood scars. Touching Pokemon and all.

I don't know who thought Ash going to school was a good idea. He's the only trainer in-universe to have traveled for so long and have receipts to back it up. He's been through what some veterans wouldn't even dream of. What the fuck was the point of putting him in school with a bunch of kids who literally have nothing but shitmons? A lot of them don't even have real battle experience. Putting Ash in the same class as someone who can't even touch Pokemon was a red flag.

SM was truly a mistake. No one could have foreseen this.
