Ash was the strong/competent male lead, Serena was the love interest and did idol like competitions, Bonnie was the cute little loli who was the heart of the group, and Clemont was the nerdy kid who looked up to Ash and wanted to gain more confidence. Ash's pokemon particularly Greninja all follow shonen traits as was Alan as the rival character and Team Flare arc.

There's a reason XY gave people the impression Ash could win the league.

Yes, easily in the top three of Pokemon along with DP and the Kanto-OI part of OS.

The only real downside to XY, not counting Ash losing the league yet again, is I suppose no real rival till the second half of the series, and Serena has a slow start and the showcases aren't as interesting as Contests. But I do like the development Serena gets from them.

A large chunk of XY has nothing to do with Amour. Outside of some of Serena's eps and a few blushing/concerned moments in other eps, you could watch most of XY and not care about Amour or shipping in general.

It's kinda funny.

OS was good up until Johto.
AG was pretty meh to bad until Battle Frontier, which was amazing.
DP was good throughout the whole thing, though it has some slow pacing issues at times but that's not really an issue when you're rewatching it and have all of the episodes.
BW was a mish-mash from the start, but wasn't really bad until Rocket vs. Plasma got cancelled. Things kinda went downhill from there, but it was still a fun ride.
XY has the same pacing thing as DP sometimes, but XY has the strongest start out of any series and keeps that same feel throughout most of it's episodes, even the silly ones, and things kickstart into high gear once XY&Z starts.

Then there's SM that seemed like it started with promise but hasn't done anything with it in 26 episodes, but going back to the both 2-parter premieres...there really wasn't much to begin with. That's probably why they felt like they had to have 2 of them in a row right at the start to begin with.

You can say the same for any series then. After Kanto, every saga from Johto to AG to DP to XY all followed the same type of formula.

The only thing that makes every saga feel different is who Ash's travel companions are, what pokemon he gets, the rivals, and how they handle the pacing/events of a region.

You can't deny Ash's goal feels like it's put on the backburner this season. It's true he's still getting new pokemon and the villains are starting to be introduced, but nothing else feels like it's progressing.

Also outside of Lillie getting over her fear of pokemon, all the new SM characters are exactly the same as their first appearance.

I'm just happy they finally accepted that fanservice is the only way for Pokemon to stay relevant.

Sun moon has great fluid animation and battles
fun slice of life in a comfy Hawaiian town. a recurring cast of likable characters getting fleshed out over the course of the series over the meet someone and move on formula until now, Kukui being a father figure to ash and one of the best parts of the season.

I don't see how the animation is fluid, it just looks about the same or worse than what it always been. The whole comfyness thing is hyperbole because SM is not comfier than any of the previous series. The cast being likeable saving Kiawe and Kukui that's about it and there're characters that most of the time simply exist for the sake of existing as if they were a reminder of Brock in late DP.
