What figures do you think are underrated/overrated, /pdg/?

Keldeo is pretty garbage outside of water teams but it is pretty decent with Manaphy's boost, combined with an ability that powers it up to 91/80 or higher dark energy teams

Kirlia/Garde are overrated imo. The meta has crept past them power-wise and Shuppet isn't the presence that it once was (Mew everywhere, Long throw, etc) and the change in team comps where most top decks are rigidly adhering to an archetype

Deoxys teams run it but it's not as big of a threat where people are running a fucking 40/60 or 40/70 wheel mon against a deoxys team just to stop it. No one willfully uses Kirlia or Gardevoir in this meta, it's like the poster child for a budget deck

Infernape is going to be decent in the gym at least. Its Kick attack is great for knocking out the opponent's goalie and instantly winning. I'm planning on using mine with X attack for the gym.

Charizard might be all right too if you manage to evolve it from Charmelon. No purples or golds sucks though.

I've been running Venusaur recently as I got a second one and merged them to create a 131 Solar Beam. He puts in work as he can beat Deoxys A most of the time when I got Metagross on the board.

This gym is going to be impossible if you don't have at least one Moltres or a Deoxys team. Even at ~1500 everyone has a full EX team with at least one Moltres in it. Evolving Vibrava is an option if you have one but it's really not since everyone is using the 3MP Fire EXs now that completely overpower Vibrava, even with its boosted damage

This Gym feels incredibly one sided to whoever has a Moltres and goes first. Instead of being able to set up, you waste time protecting your goal from Moltres soaring to it. At least with the Flying Gym, all 3 of the birbs kept each other in check. Now the only thing that can reliably check Moltres is another Moltres

is anyone else not really having fun with this gym?

I'm a newish player. I started during the dragon/fairy gym. I had a TON of fun during that one despite having shitty figures. Not this one though.

Now I'm at around ~2700 in leagues which I think is pretty good for only having played for a month. So it's not like I'm complete shit at this game.However I can't get past around 1500 for this fire/ground gym. Like I'm sitting at 1400 right now. Every team I'm facing has Moltres and Heatran at a minimum. My best figure is Magmortar and he misses most of the time. After that it's two vibrava that can't actually evolve. I'm pretty good at setting up traps but that only gets you so far.

Just a friendly reminder for anyone who's going to be busy this week but still wants to make the most of the gym:

The gym lasts 8 days, 4/4 - 4/12

The top prize needs 100 wins

So you need to average about 12-13 wins a day to get the top prize.

It's generally NOT a good idea to wait until the last minute to do gym battles. Try to do a few everyday. Don't wait until the final day to do like 50.

If I remember correctly, there was a little bit of downtime on the final day of the Dragon/Fairy gym. You also have to contend with the more dedicated players just trying to score some extra gym boosters, so ti's not like you're going to get some easy wins.

One of the misses goes away at level 5. besides that it can be used to set surround traps if your opponent acts thoughtlessly and magma slide + iron head take close to 50% of his wheel. in most cases those moves will be a win. Really though it's an optional way to use Heatran. He's pretty damn good for a 2 mp mon and he's got a cute synergy with scoop up.

I use Swap Spot for setting up surrounds. If I have someone next to the opponent's goalie and a 2MP figure three steps away, I can usually put a 3MP figure behind it and use Swap Spot to surround the goalie. It's actually really effective because no one ever expects Swap Spot to be run without Gastly/Shuppet. No one ever really tries to block this. I would just use Whimsicott for this but everyone already knows what its ability does. Plus I usually have it near my goal since it's pretty decent at not dying

I've been having luck against Moltres with two Vibrava and Counter Attack. Let the opponent is Moltres like normal and use Vibrava to slow them down. Once they jump over my middle lane Vibrava a few times I use Counter Attack go to the point in pic related. Can't attack, and even if they use a 3 mp to block, Hurdle Jump.

Ho-Oh is basically just there for utility so you can sack it and resurrect anything in your PC, but you can cheese your way to your opponents goal with Rainbow Wing sometimes
Moltres is decent, as it's the strongest attack-wise of the three birbs and can keep Articuno and Zapdos in check, but Zapdos is generally the better one to carry because of its large 100 yellow attack.

As far as right now for the Fire Gym, those two are really good to have, especially Moltres since it's now basically a Mega Shuppet

The discrepancy between EX and non-EX figures is pretty ridiculous in this game. The only non-EX figure that come anywhere close is Reuniclus.

Seriously, what was I even supposed to do here? His team isn't even meta but he can just set up 3+ figures in the corner to make sure I can never, ever, ever hit his home, then he just walks any EX to my home and wins literally every single battle because they just have objectively better figures. And if he magically lands a miss, well, he still have five other juggernauts he can waltz on over one at a time.

I've gotten up to 2850 rating off of stomping retards alone, but I've yet to win a single battle against a six-EX player who has even one brain cell. Playing defensively hardlocks non-P2W players out of a win 100% of the time.

I'm not who you're replying to, but knowing how to play only gets you so far. It's not like it takes any amount of effort or skill to mechanically master a fucking Pokemon board game. Against a competent player, it's going to end up as spin vs spin and the figures with the statistical advantage will statistically win more often than not. I was 2800 like two months ago, and it's been going down since then. It was a matter of luck, too. Like I said, it's almost impossible to lose to someone who's retarded even if they have an objectively better team, so it's just a matter of luck and getting paired against brainlets.

But I have been playing near-daily since before the Flying gym and my only two EXs are Deoxys-N and Dragonite. I'm about to get a Groudon, too. I've tried using the former two and even though they let me compete with shitter EX lineups, they're a joke against a competent team and can't remotely deal with the true Deo/Reu/Zapdos/Mew meta.

I'm not alone here, either. I've had friends give up playing after a month or two because they've gotten either no EXs or only one or two shit ones tops. I honestly don't believe that anyone here's gotten more than 2 EXs a month without either paying or having absurd amounts of luck.

I have just under 3000 material from previous boosters, and I've gotten 50+ wins in each gym so far. Trying to decide between a single Deoxys-A or triple Reuniclus.

I would blow all my gems on quadpacks, but I've seen numerous people (friends as well as posters here) open 20+ packs and get pure junk or only 1-2 EXs mercifully spread in. If you're interested in advancing your rating as you claim, you would have taken the risk to accomplish that and invested in quads, where the chance of an EX pull is astronomically better than a pull from a free booster. The comparatively mediocre current pack doesn't have any top meta figures besides Reshiram, but most of its ex pulls are serviceable figures that one could build up their deck with

It's fine if you want to sit on your gems and wait for sexpacks but you're probably not going to enjoy the game being at the whim of probability and time. You could easily dump your gem and ticket supply on this rotation or the next one (which could be better), cop enough material to get triple reun, and fill the rest of your deck with the pulls from the quads you bought and the viable figures you already own. There's your deck viability issue solved.

I don't mean things like giving random figures Break Energy, an ability that prevents respins, or Dark Energy. I mean actual debuffs to Deoxys and Cosmo Energy. the best teams were Deoxys/Reuniclus but you could actually do well with other teams that didn't even have any EXs on them. For example, triple Vibrava + Trapinch trapping. Sylveon/Wigglytuff was also a nice option. And Reshiram/Zekrom was totally viable and not too horribly overpowered. Honestly, you could throw a team of Gabite/Vibrava/filler dragon/fairy types on a team and get into the 1700-1800s easily and have fun. Deoxys/Reuniclus teams were still overpowered but they weren't unbeatable. Vibrava teams were great for dealing with these since Vibrava generally doesn't need to attack anyway.

best teams were birbs of balance and yveltal + three weavile + ho-oh but there were still a few options for the poorman. Natu->Xatu with Teleport was fantastic. Likewise 3MP Natu just by itself was great. Spearow of all things was fantastic despite being a common. 3MP + half wheel Fly Away was amazing. Still, the birbs dominated and made the gym mostly tedious the higher your rank was. Lower ranks were still fun though.

You can try and stall with Vibrava, but it's not going to help. Even in <1500 (the DEFAULT STATING RANK) you're seeing double Moltres, Deoxys, and Reuniclus. This isn't fun at all.

matter of fact, these gyms suck, none of them were actually redeemable because of the tremendous amount of bullshit and counters you have to add or face to counter the counters
also, there were 3MP shuppets with +100 attack do you really think these gyms were a chess game in a park
